When he arrived back at the Deus Ex Machina headquarters following the near deaths of not just himself, but the rest of the trainees as well, Gale had been - for the most part - furious, not just at himself for failing in his strength, but at Caelius for being...

...well. What he was. The entire thing had been a debacle - a huge, messy, convoluted, twisted debacle that had started off ridiculous and had turned into something much more. Not to mention that it had taken Gale several days to fully recover after the whole fiasco; since they hadn't been safe within the bodies of golems, all of the damage had been - well, real. And Gale had returned to Deus Ex bloodied, battered, and bruised, and with a raging headache. He hadn't been the only one - most of them that returned look slightly worse for the wear (to say the least), and the dorms had been unusually quiet while everyone rested and recuperated.

Jinhai had had a nonstop litany on the goings-on, mostly to deaf ears; Gale had long since learned when to tune out the dragon, although he supposed he should pay more attention, sometimes the rifle could be a little monotonous.

He had decided to go back to the Haunted House, not because he was instructed to (which he actually had been by one of the division heads), but because Gale had not been satisfied with the very obvious and deliberate lack of answers their fearless leader. It was not as if it would have taken that much effort, but Caelius' habit of giving his trainees absolutely no help whatsoever just further showed his complete disdain for anyone other than himself.

Considering that this was, in fact, not an unusual thing, Gale had, unfortunately, grown too used to it. So when he was requested to assist in the surveying of the Haunted House, he had not hesitated. His division, after all, was Death - they were in charge of gathering the most information possible on everything important - especially things revolving around Amityville and Halloween Town. Gale had already decided that he was going to do what it took to be the best that he could, regardless of what Caelius thought. Clearly his leader had already formed his opinion, but Gale, in spite of everything, was determined to change that.

Whether or not it actually would work was an entirely different story altogether.

Now he stood in the doorway of one of the rooms, idly peering in. The sniper rifle was held at his side, fingers wrapped loosely around the handle, one finger resting lightly against the trigger as though he were just waiting for the opportunity to pull it.

Which he half was, since there could be no telling what sort of maniacal creatures lay in the shadows of the Haunted House. Gale did not exactly have the best memories from here, after all; a part of him actually hoped he might run into the frost demon at some point so he would have the chance to shoot her, but simultaneously he realized that, in the event of a loss on his part...

Well, he didn't want to think about that.

Quietly, stealthily, Gale made his way through the rooms, searching for any sign of FEAR.

And any answers that might be lost within the confines of the house.

Jack damn, she was so tired of dying! That was what the...third? Fourth? Something time she'd died with that fiery pain coursing through her veins? If there was any other reasons to absolutely loathe those humans (aside from the loss Halloween had suffered because of them) it was the sheer amount of times they all had to die.

This time had not been any different than the last. She'd found herself back at Amityville, sore, in one beat up piece, with a massive headache and ears that rang for a good day. And all she'd wanted to do was curl up with her boilfriend and not move. Those others that she'd wanted to check on, LW simply texted them to make sure they were alright and moaning and groaning like she was. Going to actually seen them had been asking too much. Besides, curling up with Ren or her minipets was relaxing and helped the aches dull away.

Today, however, she'd needed to get out. Go get fresh air. Maybe attempt her usual morning run. But before that, food. Maybe check the announcement board to see what new lies might be written up there.

She followed a path she'd traveled many a time before, glancing at other slowly moving students as she passed them. A turn down this hall. Another at that- wait. LW paused, backing up a step. That was...odd. The she-wolf stared. She swore she knew where she was going...but, when had there been a corridor added here? It was almost like a switch being flicked on. That Jack damned curiosity of hers took control and the she-wolf took a hesitant step within the corridor. Then another. And another.

LW couldn't exactly explain it, but something drew her further in. It might have been a smell, as those were strongest to her senses. And a strange wind seemed to tease her hair. Odd... Letting her curiosity lead on, the she-wolf walked quietly - and cautiously - down the corridor until she saw what must be the other end.

And then something in her froze. That...wasn't that...?

"Okay. Now I'm really confused." And equally curious.

Before her was the Haunted House. The one that had been the location of several of her...deaths. Now, the rational part of her mind said to stop right there. Turn around. And go find Ren. The LW part of her mind...couldn't resist this new and exciting thing. Maybe...it wouldn't hurt to take a look inside...? Stupid and dangerous. Check and check. So, naturally, the she-wolf quietly padded up to the door, testing it, pleased to discover it wasn't locked and opened easily.

Violet eyes widened with utter wonder as she stepped within the Haunted House, gaze darting all around. Her tail flicked behind her as some part of her werewolf mind knew to proceed with caution and not be a complete idiot. So she took full advantage of the light dancers step she had, moving deeper into the house. There was a scent in here. One she was becoming all too familiar with by now. Though it was hard to tell if it was new or old. But it was there none the less.

Hesitant, LW glanced over her shoulder at the entrance. Maybe I really should go back and get Ren... That scent caught her attention again and the she-wolf crouched down, straining to hear anything out of the ordinary. Something, either instinct or pure gut feeling, told her she was not alone within this house. Her gaze flickered towards a set of stairs. Not bothering to think on the pros or cons, LW darted swiftly and quietly up them. There were several rooms up here. Curious nature overruling common sense, LW opened one of the doors cautiously, peering inside with the fascination of a pup that just got a new toy.

Gale could not taste the FEAR, but Jinhai could.

<< There's someone here. >>

Instantly Gale's fingers tightened around the rifle, swinging it up to position it carefully, the butt of it resting atop his shoulder, his free hand supporting the barrel. It was not as heavy as it might have been, should it have been a normal weapon - but with the strangeness of the island and the fact that Jinhai was bonded to him, it was not hard to lift and use the weapon. The weight was a comfortable one, one that Gale had long since grown used to.

Where? he asked silently, taking several long, quiet strides forward.

<< Just outside the door. >>

The room he was in was large, expanding several yards in either direction. The walls were a fantastical blue and sporting thin white pinstripes so frequent and so close together that Gale was quite certain it would give him one large headache if he cared to stare too long. There were spruced up looking chaises, a long couch, and several silk pillows tossed haphazardly here and there, and the window above the couch was opaque, the glass hazy. Gale had already pressed his nose against it, looking to see if it was actually a window, or if it was just a fake one - and he was rather sure it was not real, since all he could make out was more haze and some dust that had caused him to sneeze. Fortunately, he had managed to stifle the brunt of it, so it had turned into a less obvious choking sound that could have been mistaken for the creaking of floorboards.

And now that he was aware of the presence of FEAR, Gale could hear the soft shuffle of footsteps as he pressed his ear to the wall. They were getting nearer, whoever they were - Gale shifted silently, sliding back into the shadowy corner just beside the door and held his rifle in position, waiting...waiting...

There was a small creak. The door swung open.

Gale's fingers tensed, one on the trigger, as usual. His head was resting against the barrel of the gun, peering through the telescopic lens and waiting for the opportune moment. To shoot her without her knowledge would be rather low, however, since as the creature poked her head cautiously into the room he could tell she was female - a brightly redheaded female, dressed in a rather scanty outfit, with a long, bushy tail trailing along behind her; a stark contrast to the overwhelming blues of the room.

Gale slowly unfurled himself from the corner and pointed the rifle directly at the wolf.

"Freeze."

((Rolling to see who goes first!))

The she-wolf knew she should be more cautious moving about the house. But she was so used to walking with a light step that hardly made noise to begin with that she let her guard down a fraction there. And then her curiosity was getting the better of her common sense - which was currently screeching something like, REN. NOW. - thus another fraction of her guard being lowered. Foolish would definitely fit her today. Foolish, but not entirely stupid. No, her wolf half wouldn't allow for full stupidity.

Which was probably the only thing that kept her from prancing into rooms without a care. LW didn't trust this house. Really she didn't. Even if she was painfully curious about why she was able to get here. That instinctual part of her mind told her to be wary. Move with caution.

Her nose twitched again. That scent tickling her sense of smell. But was it new? Or old? LW couldn't tell. Oh and there was a dusty almost moldy-earthen scent that must have been the house's scent itself.

I am so getting my butt kicked for being here. She thought with mild amusement, sticking her head cautiously into the room. The she-wolf thought she'd heard something before, a soft sound. But this house made a lot of soft sounds. And this room! It was so blue. A nice shade, actually. One that she could grow a liking to. However the first thing that really caught her attention was not the blue walls with their white pinstriping, or the couch and chaises. Nope. It was the pillows. Of course. A canine tilt of her head regarded them as she took a step farther into the room-

"Freeze."

LW froze alright, surprised violet eyes widening and swinging towards the one who had spoken. She had not seen him there before. Or noticed anything like a scent or sound. Something, now that her brain started to really work, probably having to do with this Jack damned house. The she-wolf felt her heart rate tripple and something in her...shift. Violet eyes narrowed ever so slightly, quickly taking in the boy and his 'toy'.

A human! Why was there a human here?! No. A Hunter. Yep. She was so totally getting her a** kicked when she got back. If...NO! LW would not even allow herself to be swallowed by any fear she might feel. She was a Jack damned werewolf! A citizen of Halloween! She was not going to let this shorty scare her!

Then she sneezed. And lunged towards the couch, bouncing off the cushions to crash behind it.

"Skellington Jack! It's friggin official. I have an allergy to humans." She muttered, crouching against the floor and peering around the edge of the couch.

He could see the tensing of her shoulders at his words, see the sudden stiffness of her posture. He'd startled her - something that made him pleased - and now she was forced to face him, regardless of whether or not she had been attempting to sneak around the house at her own pace.

She might have been a pretty thing, if she had been anything other than a monster - a slender, toned body, tumbling locks of scarlet hair - but that tail...it only served as a reminder of what she was, and Gale looked at it with an unreadable expression, his eyes flickering first from that to her pale, angry face as she suddenly leapt towards the couch. His rifle followed her movements, Gale shifting his step to accommodate, but he didn't shoot - not yet.

"You're one I haven't seen before," he said mildly, tilting his head towards her.

Even if he had seen her before, it was not as if he were keeping track with the ones he barely had any interaction with. There were a few that clearly stuck out in Gale's head - like the ice demon, for instance, as well as the rest of the female creatures in that room - but anything else was just grey smoke, lost in the confines of Gale's mind.

One creature was just like another, after all. They were monsters.

<< She's a werewolf, if I'm not mistaken. >>

"What are you doing here?"

If you've seen one human, you've seen them all. It didn't matter to her if she'd fought this one or not. The fact remained the same. He was one of Them. And she had definitely found herself in a bad situation. As her hammering heart kept informing her, with that little voice inside her head also reminding her she'd had a chance to make sure she didn't find herself in a dangerous situation.

But why in Halloween would she have ever taken the boring approach?

Tail swishing irritatedly behind her, LW kept low to the ground. Watching. Listening. And thinking Jackdamnit! She probably wouldn't make it to the door again. And most likely was going to get shot. Possibly more than once. But damned if she was going to sit still and let him be the only one to cause damage!

LW snorted, nails slightly growing pointier as they dug into the floor.

"Should I be offended?" The she-wolf asked sweetly with a dash of spice, using their chatting to take a quick glance around this side of the couch. Nothing useful. Except the couch itself. "Clearly, if we had any previous dates, it was so dull and boring as to not be worth remembering."

Skulls! There was nothing of use over here. Which meant if - no when - the fight began, she'd have to use her own fists. Or that pillow over there...

"I could ask you the same thing, shorty." LW replied cheekily. "Why are you here, human?" The last fell into a growl as the she-wolf crouched lower in preparation for whatever was about to happen.

Gale decided, right then and there, and quite out of the blue, that everything was Caelius' fault.

Mostly because despite the fact that Gale was perfectly capable of handling things himself and usually took the initiative to do what it took to perform the best sort of work he could, there was the undeniable truth that the Death Division Leader was completely and utterly useless - at least when it came to information. When it came to fighting, his abilities with his scythe were unmistakably powerful, but at times like these - when he forced the trainees to find out things without explaining situations - Gale held a great deal of resentment towards him.

But it was not as if he didn't expect it anymore, and by now he had learned that the only way to get answers was to do the work himself. Which meant that finding a creature here, in the Haunted House, was an unexpected windfall. Perhaps he could find out some things from her.

"No," replied Gale mildly, with a slight tilt of his head. "I don't recall seeing you, you probably don't recall seeing me, so it seems as if we're both in the same sort of mindset."

He gave a noncommittal shrug, completely unaffected by her sneering, sickly sweet comments, and slowly straightened, stepping away from the shadowy corner of the wall. Jinhai made a soft noise of caution in his head.

<< Be careful. >>

I know.

"Oh, so you're doing that whole thing, are you?" asked Gale loftily, cocking a brow. "I suppose I should be insulted that you're turning the question back to me instead of answering it, but then again...I suppose we're not going to get much out of each other anyway, now are we?"

He fired off a shot - not an attempt to kill her just yet, but a warning shot, and the bullet zipped towards her - a light, cresting shot that most likely just skimmed over her skin rather than go through it.

"Care to answer my question anyway? What brings you here today?"

"Oh well, since we got that settled...sorry, shorty. You're not my type anyways." LW spoke cheerfully, though there was that underlying hint of sneering. And just maybe a slight bit of fear mixed into it all. Not fear of him however. Fear of this situation.

She heard his soft movements, the whisper of rustling clothes. Her muscles tensed, nails leaving marks in the floor as she waited for the inevitable. And of course, her mind helpfully decided to remind her that he had a weapon. And she...had only what she could use. Bad. This was bad either way she looked at it. Skulls! It had been bad when she traveled down that damn corridor! Stupid, dangerous, Jackdamned curiosity!

"Aren't you doing the same thing?" LW countered. "Not answering my question?"

He fired. She squeaked (of course she did....) and flattened herself against the floor. The shot itself didn't hit her, though she damn well felt it. And LW didn't bother to even think he'd just missed. Nor did she make any comment in regards to it.

She carefully rose to her hands and knees, sliding along to put the couch firmly between them. And try to get closer to that pillow. It wouldn't do Jack s**t to the Hunter. But it might provide a small - very small - distraction that allowed her to...do something. In theory anyways.

"Call it a wolf's curiosity." She replied. "Sorry it's not a more 'exciting' answer." Just a little more...Aha! She snatched the corner of the pillow, getting a firm grip on it. Then hurled it over the couch at him, darting out from behind said couch to swipe her claws at him, twisting and jumping back to land in a crouch again.

If she had thought that she was insulting him, she was quite mistaken. The comments of "shorty" and "you're not my type" were so common within Gale's life that they simply rolled off of him like water from a duck's back. He was used to it, and whether or not that was a good thing or a bad thing was beside the point. What she said did not matter - nor was it something he lingered on, instead stepping further towards her, never lowering the rifle, even as she darted towards him, her claws raking painfully into his back. The pillow had caught him off guard, and Gale had sidestepped quickly to avoid falling over, but it had given the wolf enough leverage to attack. No sooner had he moved, however, he was facing her again, his rifle once again pointing back towards her.

"You're a sneaky one, aren't you?" he said lightly, tilting his head to the side. "And no, I'm not answering any of your questions - isn't that what I just said?"

He fired off another shot - another warning - and it whistled across the room towards her, exploding into the couch and sending bits of splintered wood and fabric showering over the floor.

<< Aren't you trying to kill her? >>

Not yet.

"What's your name?" asked Gale, leaning against the wall. His back stung, but the FEAR shield prevented there from being any lasting damage.

Had he asked, or gotten on her about the insults, LW would have shrugged and simply stated she had five older brothers. She didn't care if they actually affected him or not. Right now, she had no other name to call him. And stated truth. He definitely was not her type. But that was all beside the point.

LW remained crouched where she was, violet eyes feral and not their usual warmly welcoming selves. It was slightly nerve racking having a gun pointed at you. But hiding behind things limited her visibility. And she needed all her senses right now. Not to mention as much room as she could get for movement. The she-wolf was determined not to go down easily and would turn this room into her playground if she had to!

The she-wolf raised a shoulder slightly in a noncommittal shrug. "Fine. If manners are not something your kind are taught, s'not my fault."

Another shot was fired and LW couldn't help but flinch and roll to the side. Away from the couch that now peppered her with splintered wood and fabric. One arm had raised to block the side of her face. The other remained lightly touching the ground. Her heart was pounding and her mind worked to frantically figure out if he was toying with her? Or just being an a**. Either way it was, LW lunged, hand fisted, and aimed for either his shoulder or his head before bounding back and away.

His newest question earned hesitation from her though, as did the fact he was leaning against the wall. She watched him, tail flicking from side to side. "Little Wolfe." LW murmured.

Gale shrugged. "Manners goes both ways," he said evenly. "You're forgetting that your own kind have a distinct lack of them as well. I'm not saying we as humans always have them, since naturally there are several thousand people who don't - " Caelius came immediately to mind. " - but making yourselves out to be the good kind of creatures who always have manners is being a bit full of yourselves, isn't it?"

He shrugged again, clearly in a noncommittal way, then staggered back several steps as she lunged towards him. Throwing up the rifle horizontally just in time, he managed to avoid the brunt of her hit, but her fist still grazed his shoulder, spinning him to the side. Gale twisted on his feet, leveling the rifle again, but this time he was crouched down, one knee up.

"Little Wolfe, is it?" he said, tilting his head. "Interesting name. Mine is Gale."

Now that he looked at her, Gale could vaguely recall that she had been one of the ones he had talked to while in a golem, under a mission. There was no chance of her recognizing him like this - he had looked like an inugami demon during that time - but he could see the smile on her face in his mind, hear her cheerful bantering as she'd led him around.

"I really am sorry, you know," he said, and spun the rifle around, slamming it into her leg.

The she-wolf snickered. "Oh I haven't forgotten that at all." She couldn't deny - nor would she try - that those of Halloween might not have manners on the same level as a human. But that was just one of the many differences between the two, wasn't it? Besides the more obvious facts. Like Halloween being the monsters hiding under the human's beds, ready to do what they do best.

She clenched and unclenched her fist, silently cursing how easily she could injure herself like this. Or how the smallest of things could harm your skin. He blocked her with that weapon of his. The thing made the her hackles raise. There was just something about it she did not like.

Gale. Why did that... "You were the one those little brats kept calling to! The loud and annoying, shrieking scarelings. Or baby hunters." She only remembered the name. Nothing else about him. This was the first time they'd met face to face. Or at least she assumed so.

Sorry? Why the Jack would he be-

LW didn't get to finish that thought as he moved. But not quick enough. The weapon landed a hit, but she did manage to fall back and remove her leg from the brunt of the attack. It still hurt. Just not bad enough to keep her from firmly planting her hands on the ground behind her and kicking out with the same leg.

"Sorry my a**." She growled.

He staggered and fell, nearly losing his grip on the weapon. Jinhai made an angry hiss inside of his head, as though to remind him that he was, in fact, a sentient being and did not like being thrown around.

Sorry.

<< She's a fast one - watch out. >>

I think I've got that, fact, thanks.

Gale pushed himself up into a sitting position, shaking some of his hair out of his face. The blonde strands were beginning to fall out of his usually neatly kept ponytail, and for what would probably not be the last time, he thought about how much he really did need a haircut - and rather badly.

"They weren't scarelings," he said, as he got to his feet again, brushing off his now dusty coat. "But yes, baby hunters, due to a little, er...experiment gone wrong, you might say. I was the only one unaffected by such a thing, so yes, you did hear them calling for me. I was under the direction of having to keep them safe, because of it, though they really held no need for that. They are quite capable on their own."

Not to mention that he'd been...kidnapped, so to speak, before he could do anything really well.

"I wasn't kidding, you know," he said seriously. "It's not as if I enjoy what I do, but this is the path I chose."

There was a flash of white and pale blue as the rifle was swung out again, Gale gripping the barrel in order to sweep the weapon out and slam it into the wolf's side this time, his foot kicking out simultaneously to knock her feet out from beneath her. His eyes flashed towards her.

"This is who I am."

"Scarelings are babies for us." She said absently. Now that was curious. Coincidental timing perhaps? Or something...else? The fact that he'd mentioned he was the only one unaffected grazed past her while she focused on the first part. LW tilted her head at the hunter boy. "An experiment gone wrong? Interesting." She murmured, then went on. "We were affected by...something. Had a bit of a genderbending experience." There was a visible shudder at that one.

"Never thought I'd miss boobs that much." She muttered a little quieter. Almost as an afterthought. Or lingering scar from yet another Amityville trauma.

Almost up there with the constant dying...

The she-wolf's face finally hardened, taking on a much more feral appearance. All the times they'd found themselves against the Hunters. The pain. The nightmares. Watching those closest to her suffer. Their loss. And the Jack damned dying! Oh no. There was no 'sorry' allowed.

"Then you chose a poor path, little human." She hissed as the rifle came at her. LW knew she was at a disadvantage being on the ground as she was. The she-wolf tried to twist away from it, but the force of his swing caught her squarely in the side. Even as she managed to get her feet beneath her to lunge, his leg caught hers and she slammed down against the ground.

Well. That one was going to leave a mark. And there was no hiding it from Ren.

"Then allow me to return the favor and show you who I am." The she-wolf managed to get to her hands and knees, livid gaze locked on Gale. And then something that would only appear as a strange rippling and distortion to the hunters eyes occurred as LW shifted. Skin was replaced with fur. Limbs were shortened and thinned so powerful canine legs could take their place. The wolf lunged the second her shift was complete, snapping her jaws at him, letting her front paws slam into his chest before she jumped over him to the other side getting some distance between them.

Gale arched one blonde brow.

"Genderbending?" he repeated, this time in a rather curious tone of voice as though he might actually be wondering about this particular "experiment." It sounded as though it were something that Julie could have caused, were it not in Halloween Town instead of the island.

Or maybe Julie's little "incidents" were now so ubiquitous that they were at Amityville now too.

Somehow that would not surprise Gale if they were.

"You're telling me," he murmured mildly, watching with light interest as she shifted, the snapping and cracking of bone and muscle echoing throughout the small room. It was not large enough to take the time to heal - there was no place to run or hide, and Gale felt massive paws smash against his chest. Staggering backwards he felt the wolf's jaws close over his arm briefly before she disappeared, leaping over to the other side of the room.

Wincing, Gale got to his feet again, a bit slower this time. Jinhai made another noise in his head, this one a disgruntled one.

<< Good job. >>

Thank you.

Leaning on the rifle, Gale eyed the wolf carefully.

"I know the path I chose isn't particularly normal. But this is all I have. You don't have to agree with it - and you won't, considering where we are right now. But I chose it and I will stand by it."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Regardless of what happens to me."
