Once again, it was right after I made threads being aggressive on the subject of bad spelling/grammar.

People sure are ridiculously sensitive. Besides, word usage/spelling is VERY important. Saying "your" instead of "you're" or "there" instead of "their" or "they're" makes a HUGE difference in sentence meaning. It actually undermines what you're trying to say if you use bad spelling or use the wrong homophone.

People are weird. But I want people to love me for who I am, not for who I am not.

I tend to be very lax when it comes to other peoples spelling. It helps keep the peace since, not living in the mainland states myself, a lot more people on average don't have English as their first language. As long as I understand what they were trying to say, the way they get it across is inconsequential. Language is only a tool people use to communicate and express themselves with. Pay to much attention and get stuck on the tool and you start to lose sight of what it's for.

Mature love is knowing when it's better to forgive someone for a mistake and letting it go because people will make mistakes in life. A lot. If you point out every single mistake someone makes you'll go through life very lonely.

I'm quite tolerant of the English no-nos done by foreigners. But if the person has English as his or her first language I find it kind of annoying to see a sentence that says "There going to there home over there".

Just a personal observation....you sometimes tend to come off as condescending to people when you go about "correcting" someone's grammar. There are a LOT of people that live here in the U.S. that do not have English as their first language. Trust me, I know....I work in a high school where there are several ethnic groups. English is -not- an easy language to learn, mainly because of the several words we have that sound alike, but are spelled (and mean) differently. Perhaps you should ease up a bit on your judgments, and you may find that your friend list may not shrink anymore.

Being a seasoned Data Entry Specialist/Typist, I am very much aware of the majority of spelling and wording errors in posts that others make. ninja Because of my training and experience, I feel a strong need to correct them. stressed But, I will only edit my own posts, and on rare occasions I will correct some typos made by a close friend (of whom gave me permission to do so). Other than that, I keep my mouth shut and my hands off those edit buttons. sweatdrop Like Kai said, as long as the general idea is understood, then just let it go. 3nodding

Hmm... it's just so hard to ignore sometimes when the person making the no-nos is an American or Briton and appears to be making errors with an "i dun care about speling and grammer" attitude... I was taught good English skills growing up and to see someone be so careless... crying

I'm surprised that in a thread like this, no one pointed this out yet rofl *too emotion_awesome

Anyhow, on the one hand, it doesn't help people learn the language if you keep letting them make those mistakes, but on the other hand, if they're not interested in learning or being corrected, you're just going to come off as an a**. If you have no problem with people thinking you're an a**, then keep doing what you're doing. But if you actually want friends, it's not recommended you nit pick at every mistake people make.

It's also best not to try to pretend you're perfect with the language no matter how good of a handle on it you believe you have. You -will- make mistakes as well, whether it be a typo or just not thinking your words out as you're typing them {such as misusing the word "linguist"}, and you'll just look like an even bigger a** for demanding perfection from others.

I can relate to that. But it's rather obvious that some people are getting very offended by your need to correct them. So, unless you are a tutor or a certified teacher teaching English to a student, you really should just learn to let it slide. I know very well that this is hard to do, but it's entirely possible to accomplish. 3nodding

Trust me, I refuse to use Internet Explorer or any other browser sans spell checking if I have a choice. Being out of school so long... I rely on spell checkers somewhat.

True. But I am always willing to learn. Unless the person says "That's not how you use the word, dumbass!" I will take the criticism in stride.

The only time I'll care about spelling is when I have to do a project or other important documents. Living on the Aloha state means that we have lots of ethnic groups, dialects, and accents to deal with. So long as I can understand them, I could care less about spelling; unless it has to do with an important document. Pointing every little mistake out is like beating a dead horse. Its dead, you don't need to kill it anymore. People don't take kindly to being constantly nagged about spelling in a casual conversation. Unless you're in a position where you need to do such corrections {i.e. Teaching a subject, Legal Documentation, etc.} there is no need to overstate that someone's spelling is incorrect. Might I add not everyone takes criticism the same way you do. Try seeing from another's point of view sometime. It will surely help with keeping friends or at least understand what made them want to remove you from their life.
