Mythology can refer either to the collected myths of a group of people—their body of stories which they tell to explain nature, history, and customs—or to the study of such myths. As a collection of such stories, mythology is an important feature of every culture. Various origins for myths have been proposed, ranging from personification of natural phenomena to truthful or hyperbolic accounts of historical events, to explanations of existing ritual. Although the term is complicated by its implicit condescension, mythologizing is not just an ancient or primitive practice, as shown by contemporary mythopoeia such as urban legends and the expansive fictional mythoi created by fantasy novels and Japanese manga. A culture's collective mythology helps convey belonging, shared and religious experience, behavioral models, and moral and practical lessons. As the study of myth, mythology dates back to antiquity. Mythology is taught as an elective subject from the third year on at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Mythology classroom is a small, comfortable space, bathed in the soft purple and golden glow. The light emanates from the center of several large tiger and stargazer lillies, which float about the room's ceiling. There are no desks, but rather serveral low tables, covered in purple table cloths with silver and gold patterns. These are surrounded, not by chairs, but several large, soft satin pillows in tones matching the cloths. The walls are covered in various tapestries depicting scenes from both muggle and wizard myth, all in a monochromatic sepia tone with purple accents. Any space not covered in the tapestries is taken up by bookshelves. Two shelves closest to the back of the room have several copies of the various texts used in the class for students who chose to take it at the last minute. In front of these two shelves are a table, slightly higher than the others, with only one pillow directly behind it, which serves as Professor Harlowe's desk. The desk is covered in stacks of books and papers with various notes and lesson plans written across them. There is no manner of organization, the papers are simply stacked wherever she could find room. To the left of the desk is a small board, where any notes for the students to copy are written.

× Lesson One ×
The Founders of Hogwarts

Godric Gryffindor
× Founder of Gryffindor House, known for bravery, valor, determination, and strength of heart.
× Famed warrior, known for his prowess both with a wand against fellow wizards, and a sword when fighting on the battlefield alongside muggles.
× Far from being a simple brute, as some would describe him, Gryffindor was a master strategist on the battlefield, and exceptionally clever.
× The creation of the sorting hat, according to myth, was his idea, though all four founders worked together on the magic to enchant it.

Helga Hufflepuff
× Founder of Hufflepuff House, known for acceptance, hard work, and loyalty.
× Famed cook, known for creating and perfecting many food-related charms and many of the recipes still used by Hogwarts House-Elves for meals.
× Not as much is known about Hufflepuff, possibly due to many of her accomplishments having been her influence on her students, rather than feats of bravery in battle or stunning magic.
× However, her legacy is one that cannot be questioned, one of acceptance and patience. In allowing students into her house regardless of their background and apparent skills, she paved the way for open-mindedness and kindness among the wizarding world.

Rowena Ravenclaw
× Founder of Ravenclaw House, known for cleverness, creativity, and wit.
× Famed for her sharp mind, Ravenclaw is credited with the creation of many powerful spells and the inventive protective measures for Hogwarts.
× Perhaps her most famous and interesting accomplishment was the creation of her Diadem, an object said to grant her wisdom to the wearer. However, the truth of these claims cannot be verified, as the Diadem was destroyed in the Second Wizarding War.
× Ravenclaw was known for being strict and intimidating, though one could argue that she must have been loving as well, willing to forgive great injustices done against her, such as the betrayal she suffered at the hands of her daughter.

Salazar Slytherin
× Founder of Slytherin House, known for ambition, cunning, and resourcefulness.
× Famed for his ruthlessness and determination to accomplish his goals and follow his beliefs, even going so far as to build the Chamber of Secrets below Hogwarts Castle before departing, to ensure that his desire to keep out muggleborns would be fulfilled even in his absence.
×Fraught with controversy, Slytherin is a figure that is hard to understand. It is hard to say if history's version of him, a villain who believed muggles to be unworthy, is reality, or merely something that has been assumed of him.
× However, he remains one of the 'four most brilliant' wizards of his time, and was at some point or another friends with the other three founders. From what we understand, it's hard to believe that they could be taken in by someone as nefarious as Slytherin is thought to've been, implying that there is more to his story than we know.

Discussion Prompt: We are now many centuries removed from the actual historical reality of the school's founders. How do you suppose their reputations have been changed or embellished over time?

Homework: Choose the founder for any house but your own. Write a short essay about what we know about them, comparing and contrasting known fact with legend and rumor.

× Lesson Two ×
The Chamber of Secrets

Salazar Slytherin
× Professor Salazar Slytherin was a pure-blood wizard of medieval times. He was a Parselmouth (a wizard with the rare ability to speak with snakes) and skilled at Legilimency. He was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the former best friend of Godric Gryffindor, a fellow founder.
× Slytherin didn't trust Muggle-born students, and he expressed his opinion not to accept them at Hogwarts. However, when the other Hogwarts founders didn't agree, Slytherin created the Chamber of Secrets, concealing a basilisk inside. Afterwards he left the school, never to return. He died sometime in the Middle Ages.

The Chamber
× The Chamber of Secrets was said to be hidden away, so that only the Heir of Slytherin could ever find it, and house a monster which only the heir could control.
× As no one was ever able to locate the Chamber, it was dismissed as a myth. However, in the 1940’s, there was a series of attacks, leading to the paralysis of several muggle born students, culminating in the death of student Myrtle, who now haunts the girl’s bathroom on the second floor, known better to students as Moaning Myrtle.
xxx× Then-student Rubeus Hagrid was blamed for the attacks and expelled, but remained at the school as gamekeeper.
× Later, in the 1990’s while Harry Potter attended Hogwarts, the Chamber was opened again, and Hagrid was briefly taken to Azkaban prison.
xxx× It was later proven that the culprit, in both instances of the Chamber being opened, was none other than Tom Riddle, known later in life as Lord Voldemort.
xxx× The first time, Riddle was a student in attendance at Hogwarts, and was in fact the one who turned Hagrid in. The second time, he was acting through use of a Horcrux and student Ginny Weasley.

Discussion Prompt: We now know the existence of the Chamber of Secrets to be very real. However, it's likely that over time, details regarding its existence may change or be forgotten. Which details do you think will be forgotten, and which do you believe will prevail? How do you suppose the story will be embellished?

Homework: Research and write an essay detailing another myth regarding the construction of Hogwarts castle.

× Lesson Three ×
The Deathly Hallows

The Three Brothers
× Three brothers, skilled in magic and very clever, use magic to avoid drowning in a dangerous river. They are met by Death, who proceeds to congratulate them for avoiding an untimely demise and offers them each a boon for evading him.
xxx× The eldest brother asked for the most powerful wand to ever exist, and was granted the Elder Wand.
xxx× The middle brother asked to be able to reclaim people from Death's grasp, and was granted the Resurrection Stone.
xxx× The youngest brother asked for a gift which would allow to him go unseen by Death, and was given Death's own Invisibility Cloak.
× The eldest brother immediately tested the might of the Elder Wand and killed a man with whom he had quarreled. He later boasted of the wand's power. That night another man crept into his room and murdered him, stealing the wand.
× The middle brother resurrected a girl he had once hoped to marry. But she returned as a shade of herself, and suffered greatly from being brought back. Miserable and maddened by her state, he killed himself to join her truly in death.
× The youngest brother, wiser than the other two, donned the Invisibility Cloak, and wore it until he was old and ready to die. When he finally removed it, he entered the afterlife as Death's equal.

The Deathly Hallows
× The three items given to the brothers in the story are believed by some to be real, and are called the "Deathly Hallows."
× If a wizard were to possess all three items, it is said that he would become the "Master of Death."
× Though there is no hard evidence as to the existence of any of these objects, myth and rumor persists.

The Elder Wand
× Taken by Death from a nearby Elder tree and given to the eldest brother, it is said that the possessor of this wand cannot be defeated in combat.
xxx× Indeed, in the story, the brother is killed in his sleep.
× The loyalty of the wand is said to be won by overtaking or defeating its master, presumably through means other than a proper duel.
× There have, over the course of history, been a multitude of rumors regarding the existence of a wand which could not be defeated, which was heavily sought after by those who desired power.
× People said to've posessed the Elder Wand at some time or another include Emeric the Evil and Barnabas Deverill. Even more recently, it is theorized that, if such a thing existed, it may have been owned by the likes of Gellert Grindlewald and Tom Riddle aka Lord Voldemort.

The Resurrection Stone
× Originally a river rock near where Death encountered the three brothers, the stone was imbued by Death with the power to bring a departed soul back to the land of the living.
× However, a soul cannot truly be returned from the afterlife; what comes back instead is said to be a "shade," though what exactly this means is not clear. It is said that the Shade is not able to live a proper life among the living, and suffers for it.
× Unlike the other two Hallows, there is no recorded existence of such a stone existing after the events of the story.
xxx× This is the greatest indicator in some people's minds that the story is just that, a story. If there were truly an object which could return the dead, surely it would have been used and made it into some historical account somewhere along the line.

The Invisibility Cloak
× Unlike the other two Hallows, this one was not an item Death enchanted on a whim during the encounter with the brothers. Rather, he gave the youngest brother a piece of his very own cloak.
× Unlike the typical invisibility cloak a wizard might find in a high-end shop, this cloak was said to be infallible, with an enchantment that would never fade or fail, hence why the brother was able to avoid Death for all his life.
× Like the Resurrection Stone, after the events of the story, the cloak seems to disappear from history.
× Unlike the Stone, however, it does not appear to stay that way. It is reasonably well-documented that Harry Potter was in possession of an invisibility cloak, one which seemingly never lost its enchantment.
xxx Further, this cloak is rumored to've been a family heirloom, which would mean that the enchantment on it was excessively long-lived, even if it wasn't eternal.
× The supposed existence of this cloak is the greatest evidence in favor of the existence of the Hallows, but Harry Potter has declined to verify any details regarding it.
xxx× Some conspiracy theorists regard his refusal to discuss it as evidence that the story is in fact true, and that it is in fact the cloak from the story.

Discussion Prompt: If you believe that the story is true and the Hallows exist, where do you suppose they are now? Presumably Harry Potter possesses the cloak, but what about the other two?

Homework:If given the opportunity, which of the Hallows would you take for your own? Consider the Tale of the Three Brothers when forming your thoughts and write a short essay outlining them.

× Lesson Four ×
The Boy Who Lived

Harry Potter - The Man
× Harry James Potter, born 31 July 1980, was the only son of James and Lily Potter.
× On Halloween of 1981, Tom Riddle (aka Lord Voldemort) attacked the Potter's home, located in Godric's Hollow, and murdered James and Lily, presumably for their involvement with The Order of the Phoenix, a group of wizards who had organized with the goal of defeating Riddle.
× Remarkably, Harry Potter survived the attack with only a scar on his forehead, while it seemed that Riddle died in the event. How exactly this occurred was not clear, but Riddle disappeared overnight.
× Potter was then placed in the care of his mother's sister and her husband, a muggle couple.
× Potter began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1991.
× His school years were marked by turmoil and strange events, culminating in the return of Lord Voldemort at the end of his fourth year.
xxx× Events include the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, the escape of Sirius Black from Azkaban Prison, and being entered into the Triwizard Tournament despite being under the age limit.
xxxxxx× Regarding the last, Potter claims not to've entered himself. How his name came to be in the Goblet has been left largely up to speculation, but it's theorized that it was part of a plot that resulted in Riddle's apparent resurrection following the final task of the tournament.
× Potter dropped out of school following the death of then-Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, seemingly set on a mission that would result in the final death of Riddle.
× There has been a lot of speculation about the specific events that occurred during his school years and following Riddle's return, but the veracity of the record is uncertain, due to missing information and embellishments.

Harry Potter - The Myth
× The death of Potter's parents and nature of his own survival skyrocketed him into fame overnight, despite his being only a year old.
xxx× Some claim that young Potter was the intended target of the attack, claiming that there was a prophecy which foretold Riddle's defeat at his hands. This is unverified.
× Unsurprisingly, his life has been marked by much in the way of rumor and legend.
× It is known that he was involved in the destruction of the Sorcerer's Stone, the closing of the Chamber of Secrets in 1993, and the ultimate defeat of Voldemort, but details on how each of these events occurred are sparse.
× Many superficial rumors were spread regarding him during his fourth year of school, during the Triwizard Tournament, which brought his fame to an international level, ranging from rumors of tattoos to rumors regarding his romantic relationships.
× Further, and greater, rumors began to surface after he disappeared following Dumbledore's death. It was said that he was seeking to defeat Riddle single-handedly.
xxx× Indeed, at The Battle of Hogwarts, Potter at one point disappeared in the Forbidden Forest at the dark wizard's behest, only for Riddle to return with a seemingly-dead Potter in hand. How he fooled Riddle with such a ruse is unclear, but he was plainly not dead, as he seemingly revived and subsequently defeated Riddle.
xxx It is rumored that Riddle possessed a special magic which prevented him from dying, with the specifics ranging from horcruxes to the Resurrection Stone spoken of in The Tale of Three Brothers. Some believe that Potter stole the source of Riddle's magic and used it himself.
× Much of Potter's life is a mystery, as following the war, he took to a private life, and spoke little to reporters. Thus, people filled in the blanks with their own theories.

Discussion Prompt: Think of what you know about Harry Potter, and how much of it is fact versus how much is speculation. How do you suppose his story might be embellished further, the less people remember of his actual life?

Homework: Imagine yourself in the place of Harry Potter, and speculate on the sorts of rumors people might tell about you, based on only a surface view of your own life.

Amata readied the classroom for the arrival of Shina, her only student for this class. The sweet, smart young Ravenclaw was a clever girl, and Amata was actually rather thankful that she had these lessons alone with her. She never knew what wisdom or cleverness would come out of the girl's mouth. This lesson being about the founder of the girl's house did a lot to make Amata excited about the girl's thoughts on the subject matter. Shina had proven, with the lesson on the Quintaped last year, to be a bit of a skeptic, and Amata, a hopeless romantic at heart, was curious as to whether or not Shina would believe that her founder's death was caused by sorrow, or illness. Amata and her mother, both strong believers in matters of the heart and their effect on the health, believed that Ravenclaw's initial illness had been caused by the rift in the first place, and was in fact responsible for her death. Amata smiled and waved her wand, the lesson appearing on the board, and awaited the arrival of her student.

Lesson 1: The Death of Rowena Ravenclaw
Little is known about the exact details of Ravenclaw’s demise. The only facts we are certain of are as follows: After Helena Ravenclaw stole her mother’s famous diadem, Ravenclaw kept the theft a secret. Shortly after, she fell ill. Knowing that whatever sickness she had was fatal and that her time was near, she asked her daughter’s former lover, The Bloody Baron, to track down her daughter, not in retribution, but so that they could be reunited. However, Helena refused to return with him. The encounter resulted in the death of both the Baron and Helena. Sadly, mother and daughter were never reunited, and there was no reconciliation between the two. Legend holds that Ravenclaw’s heart was broken as a result of her daughter’s treachery and disappearance, and that this was the main cause of her untimely death.

Homework: Do you believe that it is possible for a person to die of sorrow? Why or why not?

Shina walked into class, a smile on her face. Since she was the only student in her year taking Mythology, the class was really more of a time to be able to have a one on one discussion with an expert in the subject. Glancing at the board, her grin only widened. "Hello professor! Rowena Ravenclaw is today's subject? How fascinating!" Shina settled into her seat, opening her notebook.

Amata smiled widely at Shina when she came in and sat down, nodding. "Yes, it is. So, being a Ravenclaw yourself, why don't you tell me what you know about your founder?" The lesson was mostly focused on the legends surrounding her death, but that didn't mean she didn't want to cover a bit more than that. Besides, it was always good to know what your students needed to know before you gave a lesson. That way, you didn't bog them down with too much, or bore them with too little, that they didn't already know.

Shina nodded. "Rowena Ravenclaw was one of the four founders. Many details of her life are shrouded in speculation, but we know she was from the Scottish glens, was born sometime in the tenth century, valued a sharp mind, wisdom, creativity, and cleverness, was herself in possession of these virtues, had a daughter named Helena, and died following the Helena's theft of Rowena's enchanted Diadem.

"It is strongly believed that Rowena was the one to devise the ever-changing floorplan of Hogwarts, and that she was the one to enchant her diadem with the ability to increase the wisdom or intelligence of the wearer. We do not know where Rowena got her wand, her lineage, or numerous other details about her life,"
Shina said, briefly summarizing the key details of what she knew.

Lesson 1: The Sorting Hat

User Image

When Hogwarts founders Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin first formed Hogwarts, they personally selected the students who would go to each of their houses. After a certain point, they realized that they weren’t going to live forever, and that they needed to find a way to sort the students once they were gone. According to legend, Godric Gryffindor, struck by a moment of genius, removed the wizard’s hat from his head and he and the other four founders ‘put some brains in its head,’ which has long been believed to be a reference to enchanting it to both become sentient and gifting it with the ability of read minds. As few wizards have ever worn the hat more than once, its selection process has remained shrouded in mystery, despite the fact that every wizard or witch to attend Hogwarts was sorted by it, and thus subjected to that process. According to every source, it is supposed to place students as the founders would have, that is, by placing brave students in Gryffindor, kind students in Hufflepuff, smart students in Ravenclaw and ambitious students in Slytherin. However, evidence suggests that there is more to the process than this. Examples include the sorting of Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom. Both students were sorted into Gryffindor, despite little evidence that either of them possessed the traits that would have led Gryffindor to covet either of them at the time. Granger, well known for being the smartest witch in her year, was quiet and bookish, almost certainly better suited for Ravenclaw. Longbottom was shy and clumsy, and most likely would have been chosen by Hufflepuff, and indeed is believed to have requested the hat place him there. In both cases, later in life they would come to exemplify those qualities which Gryffindor valued in his students. This would suggest that perhaps the Hat sorts students, not for the traits they possess, but those that they have potential for, which must be nurtured. It can be argued that perhaps, had Granger been sorted into Ravenclaw, she would have remained quiet and bookish, and never risen to her potential in the areas of bravery. Similarly, Longbottom, without the influence of the stigma of Gryffindor house, might have remained shy and unsure of himself. As both students played important roles in the defeat of the Dark Lord Voldemort, one reasons that perhaps the Hat was aware that the cultivation of these traits, they would have never lived up to their full potential, and leads one to question what might have happened in that fateful era without their presence in Gryffindor House. On the inverse, it seems that you need not possess those traits at all, as Peter Pettigrew was sorted into Gryffindor. In later years, he would show to be quite the coward, selling out friends James and Lily Potter to the Dark Lord Voldemort out of fear for his own life. Perhaps this is because the hat placed him for his own preference, as he is known to have admired Potter and his friends Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. It might also be surmised that the hat placed him in the hopes that his weakness would be overcome and he would grow out of his cowardice. Unfortunately, we know this was not the case. The hat’s assessment of Pettigrew seems to have been one of its rare misjudgments.

Homework: Recount your own sorting, and discuss what traits you believe contributed to your placement.

Amata entered her classroom and, with a flick of her wand, the day's lesson wrote itself out on the board. She sat on her desk, same as she always did on the first day, but her usual smile was absent. Grayson still hadn't awakened from his impromptu nap at the feast. Her hand went to her temple, rubbing lightly as she closed her eyes. She needed some pep in her; it was essential to her teaching. But... she just didn't feel it. She sighed. When the students arrived, she managed to give them all a smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. She looked stressed, as they could probably see. But, she was determined to try and make sure that her bad mood didn't adversely affect her students. She clapped her hands together, though without the usual fervor, and began the lesson. "Hello, all, and welcome to Mythology. If you could please all take a form from my desk and fill it out for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Any information you don't wish to share, is of course, fine, I would just like to have as much information as I can to ensure that we're all on the same page for our lessons." She gave them all a moment to fill out the forms, and then collected them, reading over the pages quickly and assigning names to faces and making note of the students and their knowledge of her subject. "Alright, then. First things first, I'd like you all to know that this lesson operates mostly on a discussion basis. That is, I will give the information that the lesson covers, and then I'll open the floor for discussion. Any student who contributes will earn house points, provided that their contribution is not offensive or rude or disruptive. Please respect your fellow students and their opinions, even if you don't agree with them." She rubbed her temple again, and then launched into the lesson. Of course, there were notes on the board for them to all take, but she'd decided after last term that she needed to be a bit more informative to her students.

"You are all, of course, familiar with the Sorting Hat. You have all had it placed upon your head, heard its voice whisper in your ear, assessing your personality, your brains and heart, and had it proclaim which house shall be your home. However, in spite of almost every witch and wizard to live in the United Kingdom for the last thousand years having come into contact with the hat, it still remains a mystery. Its methods are complex, its thought processes unknown. Though it knows exactly how the mind of every person in this room works, or at least how they worked on their first night in this castle, there is not a person in this entire castle who can say that they truly understand how the hat works. It is a complete mystery. At times, its choices seem obvious. Harry Potter was, of course, a Gryffindor. But, Potter would tell many people in later years that the Hat had almost insisted on placing him in Slytherin. It was only Potter's preference that he go into, in his words, 'absolutely any other house,' that prevented this from taking place. Now, to my Slytherins, please don't take offense at this. Remember that, at the time, Slytherin's reputation was standing in the shadow of the Dark Lord Voldemort and the first Wizarding War. Anything young Harry Potter had heard of the house was from the lips of people who feared that its reputation might prove true. Other examples of seemingly obvious sortings abound. And yet, there are examples of sortings that leave historians scratching their heads and asking, why? Why was Dumbledore, one of the brightest wizards of our age, a Gryffindor, and not a Ravenclaw? Why was the cowardly and easily influenced Peter Pettigrew placed in the house known for bravery? There are many theories, and few answers. It remains a subject of mystery. Interestingly enough, few people have ever asked the Hat." Amata stopped there, feeling as though she'd been talking her student's ears off, and rather worn out from doing so. Teaching was proving arduous to her this term. But, it was her duty to teach these children. And besides, it was the only thing that really could take her mind off of her worries. She smiled at the students and asked, "Are there any questions?"

'Under covers staying safe and warm,
You give me feelings that I adore.'

Adalaide took a seat near the front of the classroom, immediately pulling out her parchment and quill to jot down the notes Professor Harlowe had up for them. She noticed that the professor seemed a bit out of sorts, which worried her, but she didn't say anything; it wasn't exactly the time for it. Besides, maybe she was just having a long day, right? Ada filled out the form for the professor as she had in the two previous years of taking the class, and then began writing the notes that were on be board. She listened to the lecture and took notes on that as well, though she didn't have any questions, really... well, except one, which the Professor had already sort of asked. Ada wanted to know if anyone had ever sat down and talked to the hat. It seemed the answer was no, which Ada found sort of odd.

Marina immediately noticed how stressed the usual calm and serene Professor Harlowe seemed. What was up with that? Well, adults had their own problems too, she supposed. Whatever it was, she hoped it was resolved soon, because she was the Slytherin's favorite professor, by far. Things were always new and interesting in Mythology. Marina took rapid fire notes, and continued to write after the woman stopped talking, in order to catch up. Whoa. That was a lot.

Penny entered the class room and took a seat. She quite enjoyed learning things in this class was intruded by the days lesson. She listened and went over the chapter, taking in the information she found. The sorting hat had always been something of interest to Penny, she would love to talk with it. Once the lesson was complete she did in fact have something to ask. "Professor, they say Harry Potter once pulled a sword out of the house from Godric Gryffindor, does the hat have other things from different houses to use in times of need?" She asked curious and waited for a reply. She also scribbled down the homework assignment.

She was usually really bubbly and enthusiastic about the class, but today... she almost sounded like she was reading her words from a script. He took notes on the lecture and copied down the words on the board, but couldn't seem to think of any questions to ask. It was hard to concentrate when the professor seemed so off.

Amata blinked a bit at the girl's question. How... odd. And yet how utterly obvious a question to ask. Still, Amata couldn't quite fathom it. What could the students of Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin ever truly need, the way that a Gryffindor might need their founder's sword? She supposed Ravenclaw might have included her Diadem had it not been missing, but still. She shook her head. "No, no other artefacts are known to be able to be summoned through the hat. There were objects the founders desired to leave at the school, such as Ravenclaw's Diadem and Hufflepuff's cup, which we will be going over later. But there is no record of anything else being connected to the hat. This could be because the hat belonged to Gryffindor before being enchanted and left to the school. While the others were helping to enchant the hat to sort students, Gryffindor might have also enchanted it to share a connection with the sword." She offered Penny a small smile, the best she could muster under the circumstances. "An interesting question, Miss DeWitt. Five points to Slytherin." She hadn't really specified what the contributions to the discussion needed to be, after all.

Rufus listened to the explanation of the hat and read what he could about it. "Um Professor? I heard that after the defeat of 'You know who' the sorting hat started to put in less pure bloods in slytherin why is that? I mean did the hat's will changed with the time or was it being influenced with Slytherin's heir?" Rufus asked thinking it was odd that after the fall of the dark lord that the hat's methods would change.
