Mythology can refer either to the collected myths of a group of people—their body of stories which they tell to explain nature, history, and customs—or to the study of such myths. As a collection of such stories, mythology is an important feature of every culture. Various origins for myths have been proposed, ranging from personification of natural phenomena to truthful or hyperbolic accounts of historical events, to explanations of existing ritual. Although the term is complicated by its implicit condescension, mythologizing is not just an ancient or primitive practice, as shown by contemporary mythopoeia such as urban legends and the expansive fictional mythoi created by fantasy novels and Japanese manga. A culture's collective mythology helps convey belonging, shared and religious experience, behavioral models, and moral and practical lessons. As the study of myth, mythology dates back to antiquity. Mythology is taught as an elective subject from the third year on at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Mythology classroom is a small, comfortable space, bathed in the soft purple and golden glow. The light emanates from the center of several large tiger and stargazer lillies, which float about the room's ceiling. There are no desks, but rather serveral low tables, covered in purple table cloths with silver and gold patterns. These are surrounded, not by chairs, but several large, soft satin pillows in tones matching the cloths. The walls are covered in various tapestries depicting scenes from both muggle and wizard myth, all in a monochromatic sepia tone with purple accents. Any space not covered in the tapestries is taken up by bookshelves. Two shelves closest to the back of the room have several copies of the various texts used in the class for students who chose to take it at the last minute. In front of these two shelves are a table, slightly higher than the others, with only one pillow directly behind it, which serves as Professor Harlowe's desk. The desk is covered in stacks of books and papers with various notes and lesson plans written across them. There is no manner of organization, the papers are simply stacked wherever she could find room. To the left of the desk is a small board, where any notes for the students to copy are written.

× Lesson One ×
The Difference Between Muggle and Magical Mythology

Definition of Mythology:
× An allegorical narrative
× A body of myths, IE
xxx× The myths dealing with the gods, demigods and legendary heroes of a particular people
xxx× A pattern of beliefs expressing, often symbolically, the characteristic or prevalent attitudes of a group or culture
× A branch of knowledge that deals with myth
× A popular belief or assumption that has grown upa nd around someone or something

Muggle Mythology:
× By and large, Muggle Mythology is made up of the myths and legends specific to ancient cultures, which have largely fallen out of practice and belief.
× An example of this is the myths of Ancient Greece, pertaining to the pantheon of gods and the worship of them. Modern Greek culture, for the most part, no longer believes in the gods of Mount Olympus or believes the stories about them.
× The study of mythology is closely tied to the study of history, but the two are viewed as wholly separate from one another in most respects.
× History is a factual depiction of what did happen, Mythology is a depiction of the interpretation of the events, oftentimes made by people who had no real understanding of the world and how things happened.
× For instance, history paints a picture of the discovery of how our solar system works, that the Sun is at its center and the Earth, and other planets, revolve around it. There are fixed points in history regarding the discovery of each planet, and of the advancements in knowledge teaching us about their orbits.
× Mythology's part in this story is found in the sun gods of old. Ancient peoples, not having the understanding of their descendants, came up with all manner of stories to explain the sun, and the stars, and how they and the Earth interacted with one another.
× In Greek Mythology, the god Apollo would bring the sun into the sky each morning with a chariot, journeying across the sky with it each day. Another example, which is not generally considered, is the ancient belief that the sun revolved around the Earth. This was proven incorrect by study, and thus, it is a myth.

Magical Mythology:
× In general, the mythology of the magical world differs from that of muggles in that there are very few stories that are specific to wizarding culture, or from an attempt to explain the unexplained.
× Generally speaking, magic is very much accepted as the answer to the unexplained, without the need to create godlike figures or invent rules of nature to make mysteries make sense.
× More frequently, myths in magical history come, not from a lack of understanding of events as they happen, but in the facts of an event being lost to time.
× For example, the story of Salazar Slytherin's departure from Hogwarts, and The Chamber of Secrets, is one rife with controversy and misinformation. Theories have abounded as to the details of why Slytherin fell out with his fellow founders, where the chamber was located, and what lay within.
× With the openings of the Chamber in our recent history, much of this information was rediscovered (with the exception of the true nature of Slytherin's departure, which can only be left up to speculation, as their are no sources capable of speaking to the facts that are willing to do so).
× However, the details even on the most recent events are obscured by a lack of willingness to discuss them, as well as the fear of the spread of certain knowledge (specifically, how to open the chamber). It is likely that, as the years progress, more and more of this information will be warped and lost to time, until the story once again becomes a proper myth.

Similarities:
× Both Muggle and Magical mythology are subject to changing over time. Details are lost to history as the minds that remember them leave this world, and second hand knowledge becomes Sixth hand, fourth hand, and so on.
× Consider the spread of rumors across the school; if you asked ten students a question regarding the same rumor, each student would likely have heard a different version, depending on where they heard it from, how many people it had to pass through to get to them, and how reliable each source was. History and Mythology suffer from the same issue, on a much larger scale. The more people tell the story, the fuzzier the details get.
× Likewise, while there are a good many creatures believed to be mythical by muggles that are known to be real by wizardkind, there are a good many creatures that even we consider mythical. Gods and goddesses, for instance, are a subject of great debate, and certain publications are famous for telling what are generally regarded as tall tales of encounters with nonexistent creatures.

Discussion Prompt: Consider a myth you know, either native to Muggle or Magical myth, and consider it from the opposite angle; what details would a person from the other side be able to explain, and which aspects would confound them?

Homework:Write a short essay comparing and contrasting muggle and magical culture and how myths are derived from each.

× Lesson Two ×
Crossovers Between Muggle and Magical Mythology

Magical Creatures:
× Some of the most prevalent muggle myths are about creatures like dragons, unicorns, and the like.
× However, in spite of knowing the truth of these creatures, magical people have just as many mythological creatures.
× One way that muggles answer the question regarding dragons, for instance, is by saying that their ancestors found and ascribed stories to the bones of dinosaurs.
× Magical people do similar things with creatures we do not believe in, such as Wrackspurts. Afflictions such as those supposedly caused by these creatures are generally explained as lack of sleep, or the ill-effects of a spell.

The Faire Folk:
× There are a lot of fae creatures in muggle myth with direct counterparts in magical reality, such as the resemblance between House-Elves and Brownies.
× However, the belief in the Faire Folk extends far beyond this. Both Magical and Muggle people hold many beliefs regarding 'fairy' creatures, including a belief in two opposing courts among a higher being of fae, tales of an alternate reality in which these beings exist, and rules regarding how to interact with the fae beings to avoid dire consequences.
× An interesting example: Some people, both magical and muggle, attest the apparent magical prowess of Santa Claus to his being fae, or being in league with the fae. Indeed, his magical powers extend far beyond what is possible for your common witch or wizard, implying there is more to him than being simply magic.
× Likewise, the 'elves' who make his toys are generally thought to be fairies, even among people who believe Santa to be human.

Ancient Religions:
× In ancient times, there was no separation between magical and muggle peoples.
× Therefore, much of what is myth to them, is also myth to us, particularly in regards to their gods.
× While belief in the ancient pantheons persists to some small degree, most people, regardless of if they are magical or not, would agree that they are simply myths.
× This, then, is the easiest to comprehend common thread among magical and muggle people.

Discussion Prompt: The lesson outline only goes over a few broad examples of the shared traits and history of mythology between wizards and muggles. What are some others not covered here? Or, what are some more specific details, or additional examples, of those provided?

Homework: Consider stories you were told as a child that you now know to be just that, stories, but that you believed in when you were young. If you grew up in a magical household, consider if there is a muggle equivalent. If you grew up in a muggle household, consider the reverse.

× Lesson Three ×
Mythology of Ancient Cultures

Ancient Culture and Ancient Myth
× Every ancient civilization had their own culture and their own beliefs, distinct from one another.
× There was some crossover and borrowing that occurred among groups that were nearby each other, in addition to the similar needs and observations contributing to a phenomenon called "Simultaneous Invention," where multiple people develop the same thing or idea at similar times with no direct contact. So, there may be similar stories and characters in their mythology as a result.
× Much of history is marked by attempted takeovers of one culture by another; when these attempts were successful, the victor often imposed their own beliefs on the people they had overtaken, contributing to some merging of ideas but also to the suppression of some cultures. Thus there is more information known about the cultures of the conquerors than the people they conquered.
× Some cultures are also extremely reclusive, not wishing to share their history and culture with outsiders. Called "closed culture" or "closed practice," there is little known about the mythologies of these people by design.

Myth Commonalities Across Cultures
× Certain aspects of mythology will be repeated among various different cultures, marking things like widespread historical events or answering questions that were common among all peoples.
× Examples include most all cultures developing their own creation myth, or story of how the world and its inhabitants came to be.
× Similarly, we can ascertain that there was likely at one point a devastating flood that covered much of the earth, since many cultures have a story of such an event.
× Dragons are a commonly told of mythical creature, due to the discovery of skeletons across the world. Some of these skeletons are dragons, but many of them are also dinosaurs that have been misidentified.
× Many culture also have something called a "Pantheon," a collection of deities that were worshiped by their ancestors. More recently developing religions are more likely to be monotheistic or have alternative beliefs, but in ancient times many religions were polytheistic and had a god assigned to aspects of everyday life such as birth, the changing of the seasons, the sun and moon, and death.

Commonly Discussed Cultures
× Greek and Roman mythology are among the most well-known in the Western world, due to the Roman's attempt at conquering much of the world.
× Similarly, Norse mythology is commonly known due to the Viking's penchant for travel; they went many places, and spread their beliefs wherever they went.
× Here in the UK, ancient Celtic religion is well-known and frequently referenced, even among those who do not really believe in those ancient stories.
× The English colonization of various Eastern countries, such as China and India, has resulted in some (frequently misinterpreted) sharing of the myths of their cultures.
× Similarly, due to an obsession with Egypt which peaked during the Victorian Era, many people have a cursory knowledge of Egyptian mythology, though it is often filtered through a European lens and mistaken about many things.
× In the past, Japan was famously reclusive, refusing to interact with much of the world for a good chunk of history. But, recent decades have it coming to the forefront of the world's attention, and its culture and mythology have been shared via such mediums as video games and movies that have grown popular in non-Japanese countries.

Discussion Prompt: Is there a certain ancient culture whose mythology you are familiar with? Share what you know about them with the class.

Homework: Choose an ancient culture you are unfamiliar with. Research an aspect of their mythology, such as a story or an entity, and write about it.

Amata entered her classroom and, with a flick of her wand, the day's lesson wrote itself out on the board. She sat on her desk, same as she always did on the first day, but her usual smile was absent. Grayson still hadn't awakened from his impromptu nap at the feast. Her hand went to her temple, rubbing lightly as she closed her eyes. She needed some pep in her; it was essential to her teaching. But... she just didn't feel it. She sighed. When the students arrived, she managed to give them all a smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. She looked stressed, as they could probably see. But, she was determined to try and make sure that her bad mood didn't adversely affect her students. She clapped her hands together, though without the usual fervor, and began the lesson. "Hello, all, and welcome to Mythology. If you could please all take a form from my desk and fill it out for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Any information you don't wish to share, is of course, fine, I would just like to have as much information as I can to ensure that we're all on the same page for our lessons." She gave them all a moment to fill out the forms, and then collected them, reading over the pages quickly and assigning names to faces and making note of the students and their knowledge of her subject. "Alright, then. First things first, I'd like you all to know that this lesson operates mostly on a discussion basis. That is, I will give the information that the lesson covers, and then I'll open the floor for discussion. Any student who contributes will earn house points, provided that their contribution is not offensive or rude or disruptive. Please respect your fellow students and their opinions, even if you don't agree with them." She rubbed her temple again, and then launched into the lesson. Of course, there were notes on the board for them to all take, but she'd decided after last term that she needed to be a bit more informative to her students.

"Rowena Ravenclaw was, as you all know, the founder of Ravenclaw house and one of the four founding members of our school. The story of her death is one shrouded in mystery and sorrow. The story, which was until the time of the second Wizarding War entirely speculative, has come to light thanks to Harry Potter and his search for the truth. Few knew that Ravenclaw had a daughter, named Helena. This daughter was her one love, the person who she cared about more than anything in the world. But, Helena at times was troubled, and grew to resent her mother for the shadow she'd cast on the girl. Out of retribution, Helena stole the Diadem of Ravenclaw, which was said to offer its wearer wisdom. Soon after, Ravenclaw fell ill. Desperate to reconcile with her daughter and retrieve the stolen artifact, which could prove incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands, Ravenclaw requested the assistance of her daughter's former lover. When he found the girl, there was a struggle, which led to the death of both Helena Ravenclaw and her lover. Ravenclaw was said to have died of sorrow shortly thereafter. Helena Ravenclaw and the man sent to find her would return to Hogwarts Castle as ghosts, known by many of you as The Gray Lady and the Bloody Baron. " Amata stopped there, feeling as though she'd been talking her student's ears off, and rather worn out from doing so. Teaching was proving arduous to her this term. But, it was her duty to teach these children. And besides, it was the only thing that really could take her mind off of her worries. She smiled at the students and asked, "Are there any questions?"

                                                          ═════════════════════════════════
'Under covers staying safe and warm,
You give me feelings that I adore.'

Lesson 2: Ravenclaw's Contributions to Hogwarts

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Hogwarts was the dream of its four magical founders. The four of them sought to build a school where magical children could come to learn to use their talents to the best of their ability. As each founder had their own strengths, each contributed something different to the construction and running of the school. Most of the specifics on who did what have long since been lost, and the completion of the school has become a conglomeration of their efforts. However, there are a few things of which we can be almost certain, simply knowing what we do of each of the founders. The most widely accepted assumption credits Ravenclaw with the school’s ever changing floor plan. Prideful of her intellect and a lover of puzzles, Ravenclaw sought to make the school a challenge in all aspects. Thus, she developed the idea of staircases that move, trick stairs and false corridors. Presumably, she can also be credited with the invention of several of the castles’ most interesting areas, such as the Room of Requirement. As Ravenclaw was well known for being an expert in almost all wandwork, there is little doubt that she would have been able to devise such spells as those that cause our halls to alter themselves and rooms to disappear. We can also surmise that she had a hand in some of the school’s defense mechanisms, such as the spell that hides it from muggles and the protective barrier. The most interesting of these features is the creation of magical golems, which can be awakened to act as an army in defense of the school. Many believe that Ravenclaw was involved in the creation of this particular defense, although it is widely accepted that it was chiefly the idea of Godric Gryffindor, who was known for being a master duelist and an expert on any tactical magic.

Homework: Think of the things that make Hogwarts unique. What contributions do you think each of the founders might have made to the school, aside from those mentioned already in class?

OOC:

If you are quoted, your student is registered for this lesson. If he or she does not attend at least one class, your house will be docked ten points at the end of the term. This is waived if you are listed as absent.

Lesson 3: The Boy Who Lived

User Image

The Boy Who Lived is one of the many titles given to Harry Potter, one of the most famous wizards of all time, and for good reason. Many years ago, a prophecy was given which spoke of a boy whose fate would be to defeat the Dark Lord Voldemort. This prophecy was overheard by one of Voldemort’s followers, who informed his Lord shortly after and set into motions the events that would lead to the death of the Potter family. On the October 31, 1981, Voldemort descended upon the Potter’s home at Godric’s Hollow, tipped off to their hidden location by Peter Pettigrew, a former friend. He entered the home and first killed James Potter, then proceeded to the bedroom, where he killed Lily Potter and attempted to do away with the boy he was certain would be his downfall. But, when he turned his wand on Harry, the spell somehow rebounded and instead seemed to kill Voldemort instead, leaving Harry with nothing more than a lightning bolt shaped scar. Years later, it would become apparent that the spell only destroyed his body, and through the use of Horcruxes, Voldemort was able to return. He would then spend years attempting to return himself to a proper body, attempting such methods as drinking the blood of Unicorns and attempting to steal the Sorceror’s Stone. He would finally succeed in re-embodying himself in June of 1994. The following year would mark his virtually unnoticed rise to power, during which time the Ministry made great efforts to discredit Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore, both of whom were attempting to spread word that Voldemort had indeed returned. His return was made public in June 1996, after which the Ministry made brief efforts to prevent his rise before he and his people infiltrated their offices and Voldemort began to unofficially run most of the major wizarding offices through figureheads. During this time, Harry Potter and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger were travelling the countryside. Many believed that Potter was running from Voldemort, but they were in fact making efforts to collect and destroy the Horcruxes Voldemort had created so that they could finish him off once and for all. They eventually returned to Hogwarts, where they met and fought Voldemort’s forces. Despite many casualties on both sides, Potter’s efforts proved successful as all the Horcruxes were destroyed.

Homework: Consider the Prophecy that spurned Voldemort to attack the Potters at Godric's Hollow. How might our world be different now if not for that prophecy?

Lesson 1: The Death of Rowena Ravenclaw

User Image

Little is known about the exact details of Ravenclaw’s demise. The only facts we are certain of are as follows: After Helena Ravenclaw stole her mother’s famous diadem, Ravenclaw kept the theft a secret. Shortly after, she fell ill. Knowing that whatever sickness she had was fatal and that her time was near, she asked her daughter’s former lover, The Bloody Baron, to track down her daughter, not in retribution, but so that they could be reunited. However, Helena refused to return with him. The encounter resulted in the death of both the Baron and Helena. Sadly, mother and daughter were never reunited, and there was no reconciliation between the two. Legend holds that Ravenclaw’s heart was broken as a result of her daughter’s treachery and disappearance, and that this was the main cause of her untimely death.

Homework: Do you believe that it is possible for a person to die of sorrow? Why or why not?

Adalaide entered the classroom and was surprised to see that Professor Harlowe had not yet arrived. She frowned, hoping that when the blonde did make an appearance, she would be in a better mood that last term. All the year, Professor Harlowe had seemed... down. And it'd only gotten worse as the year progressed. She'd heard rumors floating around, that the professor had apparently been flirting with Professor Powell... She wondered if that was true, though. Hogwarts rumors could get... weird. She was pretty sure someone had tried to blame Grace for people falling asleep last term, which was ridiculous. She copied down the notes, hoping that Professor Harlowe showed up soon.

I can see, when you stay low nothing happens
Does it feel right?
Late at night, things I thought I put behind me
Haunt my mind
I just know there's no escape
Once it sets its eyes on you
But I won't run, I have to stare it in the eyes
Stand my ground, I won't give in

Marina took a seat beside her Hufflepuff friend, and immediately started copying down the notes. In the back of her mind, she hoped to see Professor Harlowe looking happier than she had been last year. She'd heard that her and Professor Powell might be together now, and since the man was no longer in a coma, hopefully she'd be in better spirits. She waited for her boyfriend to join them patiently

Damien was actually very happy to be returning to this particular lesson. Last term, he'd been very sad that one of his favorite professors had been depressed for seemingly the entire year... he'd heard that she'd been hovering in the Hospital Wing and had assumed that she'd been worried about one of the coma victims, but he hadn't a clue who it might be... until the Brighton Ball that summer, when he'd seen her spending time with Powell, the History of Magic professor. The two had looked almost like they were flirting with each other, in a really odd sort of way, at least from Damien's vantage point. He swore he'd seen Professor Harlowe blushing at something Professor Powell had said. He took a seat with Marina and Adalaide, smiling at both the girls and offering Rufus a small wave. He took out his parchment and quill to take notes, and then leaned to whisper, loudly enough for both the girls to hear, "If she comes in skipping, I'll die laughing." He then, taking advantage of the fact that there was currently no professor present, gave his girlfriend a light peck on the cheek before beginning his notes.

Marina promptly poked her boyfriend in the nose with her quill at his smart arse comment. "Manners, you are a prefect" she hissed, glancing toward the door. "If you end up getting a detention I'll die laughing," she muttered dryly, before going back to copying down notes. Really. He made her look like an angel sometimes.

Amata entered the classroom just in time to catch the young Slytherin's back and forth with one another. Deciding to opt on the side of dramatics, she leaned down so that her face was just behind their ears. "Well, I don't really think that will be necessary. Hopefully you'll pay as much attention to my lesson as you do to my personal life." She chuckled lightly as she walked around the group to go sit on her desk. "It's good to see you all back. I don't think I really need to bother with the introduction this year. You've all been around long enough. I will take your forms, since you took the trouble to fill them out."She crossed her legs at the ankles, summoned the papers to her desk, and stacked them neatly before turning back to her students. "Now then. Onto the lecture. Rowena Ravenclaw was, as you all know, the founder of Ravenclaw house and one of the four founding members of our school. Helena Ravenclaw and the man sent to find her would return to Hogwarts Castle as ghosts, known by many of you as The Gray Lady and the Bloody Baron." She made sure to talk slowly, knowing that it was a lot of information to copy down. She paused once it was all out there, and smiled. "Questions? Comments?" She waited. It was only a matter of time. This bunch always had something to say.
