The theater hall was rather simply set up. No chairs on stage. Not a gnome in sight. Props gone and put away. Flats set against the back wall. For all intents and purposes, the theater was utterly empty. Empty at least aside from one Hell spawn sitting in the front row, clipboard and pen in hand, a chai latte held by his tail.

There was a constant tapping of the pen on wood as the teacher’s eyes ran down the stage. He didn’t really give exams, but he’d made an exception. Things after all, got quite dull when one did nothing out of the ordinary. He’d picked up her form and called it good, having the gnomes set about cleaning up his class room. Once ready he’d summoned her by gnome. Thankfully, they didn’t dump anything on her, though he’d heard them snickering at the fact that the gnome he’d sent the message with had purposely rolled in something rancid.

Not the worst thing, but it annoyed Rengath. A quick jolt to remind himself to sack said gnome later that after noon. Red eyes looked up then back at his paper. “Anna Walpurgis” the tapping on the pen had not ceased. “Reaper. A Witch of Despair. Familiar is Shibey and you do… magic.” The tapping stopped as he looked up again with a sigh. “I was unable to find an exact magic form that you specialize in so I’ve had the test.. altered.” A tap on his pen on the stage and slowly, three banners lowered. One red, one blue, and one green.

“Your first test is simple, each banner represents a magic subset. Offensive for red, defensive for blue, and healing for green. There is also a black banner and white banner. Those two are hidden in plain sight.” Another tap of his pen on the stage and dozens of black and white banners unfurled in the theater. “I also won’t tell you which banner is which. Only that one must be destroyed by dark magic. Your goal will be to destroy each banner with it’s own magic, though black and white are optional. This will be the first part of your exam Miss Walpurgis. You may start when you are ready.”

Quote:
Anna must destroy the red, blue and green banners before moving on.
The Red banner has 10 HP. Anna gets 10 attacks.
The Blue banner has a defense of 3, Anna must roll a 3 or 4 to void the banner’s defenses upon which it is destroyed.
The green banner is -8 HP. Anna must roll 3 d4 to heal it. She gets either thee rolls of 1d4 or one single roll of 3d4.

When all rolls are used/banners beaten she has the option of trying to find the black and white banners.

To find the banners, roll 1d20. 15 or above means she has found the banners. She may roll once.
If found she then must roll 1 d4. Even- the banner requires a familiar’s attack. Odd- the banner requires curse magic. You can pick which banner she attacks. If she can find it, she can destroy it.

When done quote me with final scores

This had not started well, in Anna's opinion, not when the note summoning her to her Knob exam had come rolled in stink-powder. She'd opened it with a scarf tied around her nose and mouth, then thrown away the gloves she'd touched it with. And then she'd had a bit of a sulk over having to take an exam from a professor so mean as to send her something like that... he'd fail her for sure! Just like that!

It wasn't until she got to the theater that she realized the professor was the first one she'd had a class with, the one she'd utterly failed at scaring in front of. Thus, by the time Anna appeared before him, she was practically rigid with terror. And the professor's words hadn't eased her terror at all.

"M-magic? S-sir, I-I c-c-can't-" and then she shut her mouth, because she could hardly talk and she already wanted to run away and hide under a bed until she died of sheer horror. She couldn't-

< You can, > Shibey said, calmly, putting one paw on her foot. < Your powers are shifting; this will prove to everyone where our true ability now lies. >

Anna closed her eyes. She wanted to run away, she did - but then she'd have to leave, and she'd have to leave Sura and Chaya and False, and... and she didn't want to. She wanted to stay here, and learn with them... which meant she had to do this, and not run away. Slowly, her gloved hands curled into determined fists.

< Good, > Shibey said, approvingly. < Now, let us go... >

Red Banner, Attack 1

Anna stared up at the red banner and tried not to tremble too much. She had to use magic to bring it down? Or maybe she could just...

She jumped, but her fingers didn't even brush the bottom.

< Do it properly, or not at all, > Shibey muttered.

"B-but I-"

< You killed something with your magic six months ago. You are now incapable of destroying fabric? >

His tone was almost insulting, and Anna scowled, her fists tensing with irritation, not anxiety. "Sh-shut up! Y-you... you just..." She was so tired of him snipping at her all the time. Anna turned on one heel and brought up her hands, calling up her unstable magic. What she managed to produce cracked and popped, but it cracked through the banner, shredding the bottom of it.

Red Banner, Attack 3

She kept her jaw tightly clenched, ignoring Shibey, though she could feel his gaze on her. Stupid... stupid, she had never liked him... he had never liked her.... her next shot went wide, fizzing into nothingness between the stage lights. "Shut up!" she snapped, before he could even think of saying anything.

The magic imploded in her hands; she yelped, jumping backwards and nearly falling off the stage. Her fingers and palms stung...

Red Banner, Attack 5

Her head was starting to ache, feeding off the tension of her tightly clenched jaw - but she could still feel Shibey looking at her. The actual professor had been more or less forgotten. "I'm not doing this for you," she hissed under her breath.

Jack, her head hurt.

Red Banner, Attack 6

Her magic was half leaves, half blackness; at last, another swirl of it rose from her outstretched, shaking hands. It shredded another bit of the banner; only a small amount was still present.

She could feel Shibey's approval; she didn't want it. Sura, Chaya, False, she chanted to herself, to keep out her familiar. Sura, Chaya, False-

Red Banner, Attack 8

At last, another puff of magic tore free of her, rising. As soon as it touched the remains of the banner, bits of red fabric flew everywhere, falling around her like rain. It was done.

Shibey said nothing. It was because he didn't dare to, she thought, with searing triumph. She turned on one heel and headed to the green banner.

Blue Banner

Defense. How - she'd only ever hidden under her hands, huddled into a ball. But she could feel Shibey urging her, getting past her inner mantra of names. "Okay. Okay!!" she shouted, clapping her hands over her ears for a moment before raising her hands.

The magic fairly leapt out of her, a swirling maelstrom of black-tainted leaves and vines forming a protective shield. In an instant, the blue banner shredded in its entirety.

Green Banner

Healing. Anna looked up at the green banner; despite her frustration, her anxiety, and her fury with Shibey, she still had room to feel a flash of despair. Healing magic was most closely related to her original power-set, earth magic. That darkness would just...

She squared her shoulders. Fine. Fine.

She sought the earth.

Slowly, sluggishly, transparent vines rose from the stage, gleaming with a faint golden light, though they were tainted with darkness and connected to Anna with long black 'threads'. They rose to meet the banner, and gold swirled with grey filled the green fabric.

And then that banner, too, was gone, falling around her like leaves. The instant it vanished, so too did the vines, and Anna started. She felt something inside her separate, at that moment...

Black/White Banner Search: Failed

Anna raised her head, looking at the black and white fabric still floating above her, but her vision blurred. "Sh-shibey, wh... what..." She pulled her hands in to her chest, pressing them over her heart.

It was gone. Gone. Her sense of the earth beneath her feet, as faint as it had become... it was now gone.

< Good, now that's done, > Shibey said, as if she'd just lost a glove or something, instead of a piece of her identity.

Slowly, Anna dropped to her knees, burying her face in her hands; every time she tried to reach out, she found only emptiness. Worse; she found blackness, that boiling, unfamiliar curse-power. "S-sir, I'm... I'm done," she managed, wiping her eyes and seeking the professor. She simply didn't have it in her to work with magic any more right now...

He watched her in silence the only noise the scratch of his pen on paper. Her struggles were apparent as was the bickering she seemed to partake in with her familiar. As the final banner went down and she spoke up the demon took off his glasses. “Miss Walpurgis.” He did not hesitate to climb up on stage pausing briefly to look at the witch’s familiar. “Congratulations on completing the first task.” A small handkerchief pulled out and offered it her.

“Tell me, why is it that you’re crying over such a well done display of magic?”

"N-nothing, it's... it's nothing. I-I'm fine," Anna insisted, after a moment; she accepted the handkerchief, though, and blew her nose. "M-my magic's just been changing, th-that's all. P-probably just... growing up. T-teen stuff," she finished, sheepishly.

It wasn't that, but she didn't feel like explaining. And what business was it of his, anyway?!

"... First task? I-is there more?"
