[PrP] Jealousy brings out the worst in us (Maia, RJ, & Roxy)

Maia watched from a treetop a good distance away from RJ and the egg. The sun had just barely begun to rise in the sky, dew still clinging to the nearby plant life. All was quiet as Maia stealthily moved into position. She had waited the entire week, watching and tracking RJ with his egg. Soon it would hatch and the baby would be here. From what Maia had seen, RJ would probably wander off sometime soon, and then she would have her chance to take it. 'He didn't want the egg? Then she would raise it,' she thought with a grin.

As the little thing found herself newly hatched... and apparently meant to sleep right away, well she had other things in mind, even for someone just hatched. Watching as her daddy fell asleep, she smirked and slowly crept away, not aware of what the sun could do to her or that someone was lurking nearby.

Maia watched with glee as the egg cracked open, revealing a beautiful baby girl. Eyes and ears alert for anything that would harm the childe, she shivered in excitement as RJ fell asleep and the baby began to crawl away. Soundlessly, Maia crept along the branches, following the child. When the child had crawled well away from her father and Maia didn't think she would be hear, she dropped down from the trees.

"My, what a beautiful daughter I have," she said, locking eyes with the baby. "I am Maia, your mother." Moving closer, Maia crouched down so she was closer to Roxy's level. "You have to come with me Roxy, else you'll be burned by the sunlight. Your father is safe enough where he is, but we will not be," she told the baby, trying to get her to come with Maia.

As the little one crept away from her father, her ears perked and she gave a small growl from the sound of a familiar voice from when she was an egg. One that she remembered to seem to be an angry voice. Roxy's tail fluffed up, giving her best attempt at a hiss as she saw the female coming close to her.. that is until she was told that she was her mother.

Still on edge [for such a little thing], her eyes softened from being untrusting and unsure. The soft tones that were now in the voice were somewhat reassuring, and with that, she inched closer. "'Mother'?" she mimicked softly. Roxy gave a look back to her father, who was already working on sleeping the day away, before stepping even closer. She didn't want to be burned. It sounded not so nice. Finally, she brought herself close to Maia.. her mother as she had been told, burying against her.

Pleased with Roxy's reaction to the 'strange' female, Maia was glad to see she accepted her words as truth within moments. Her arms instinctively wrapping around the smaller body, Maia glanced back towards RJ. The soft sound of steady breathing reassured her that he wouldn't wake any time soon. Gauging how long she would have until the sun would be too high to stay out in, she thought they would have a little under an hour.

Eyes flicking about to take in their surroundings, Maia thought about the best route to take to get to the hide-out she had prepared for the two of them. With a smile, she gently pushed Roxy back until she could look her in the eyes. "Now Roxy, we're going back home, and we probably won't see daddy for awhile now. He has important things he has to do," she explained soothingly. "C'mon, let's go together," Maia said smiling, standing up and holding her hand out for Roxy.

Not completely sure about this, Roxy couldn't help feel a little uncertain about things as her mother wrapped her in her arms and picked her up. And yet... somehow she did find herself accepting this as her truth.

She didn't like the feeling of being pushed. It made her even a little angry, her lips curling up in a snarl. Here she was trying to get away from being burned, and here her mother was pushing her away from her safety. Yet as Maia began to explain to her what was going to happen... she took a couple steps back, peering back over to that lazing father of hers. Was she really not going to see him right after hatching? He had her the entire time as an egg... why would he leave her now?

Ears pinning back against her head, now accepting something else coming from Maia as truth, she stepped up and leaned into her. It was all she could do as she was quite at a loss for such a little thing. Tucking her little arms in against her chest, she clung to Maia gently, ready to go and get away from being burned... whatever that was

Maia tucked little Roxy against her body, cradling her and swiftly moving farther away from RJ. The sooner they got away from him, and the coming daylight, the better. Maia was not going to take any chances with her new daughter. She had become rather fond of the small tyke in the small amount of time they'd spent together.

Using her keen sense of smell, Maia was able to retrace her steps back to the hideout. Once Roxy was tucked away into bed, she'd have to leave and cover their tracks, not to mention getting food for the two of them. Trees flew by as Maia ran, almost a blur as she attempted to outrace time. A soft purr emitted from her chest as she spotted the hideout. The cave was deep in the woods, tucked into a cliff, covered in moss and hidden from prying eyes by a landslide of rocks in front of it. Maia had discovered a way in quite some time ago while escaping wolves.

Maia leapt from rock to rock to a small gap near the top of the pile. Gently sliding in, she set Roxy down to explore. Inside was plenty of soft and plush furs and everything they would need to live until Roxy had grown. Everything except food that is. As soon as Roxy fell asleep Maia would take care of that.

Tucking herself in against Maia as she ran, Roxy nestled her head against her new mother's neck and over her shoulder, watching the scenery as they went. She was curious about where they were going and everything around them.

The further she was taken away from her father, however, made her feel a bit anxious. She hadn't gotten to know him, per say, but his was the voice she heard all the time.

Maia's jumping startled her and she held to her tighter. When her mother tried setting her down, she clung a little tighter for a moment before letting go. Her ears flicked as she began to peer about the dark cave, tail flicking behind her. Tired... she was tired. Crawling right over to the pile of furs, she flopped into them, curling up into them with a little almost purr, nodding off. It had been quite the start for the little thing and she needed sleep.

The feeling of small warm arms tightening around her sent a surge of protectiveness through her. Crimson eyes softened as Roxy crawled over to the furs and promptly fell asleep. With a soft smile, Maia covered Roxy with a few furs and then turned to leave. Glancing back one last time, Maia was almost reluctant to leave, and only the thought of losing Roxy propelled her through the door.

Tucking more moss about the opening, Maia quickly worked to cover their tracks and scent. There was little time to waste before the sun would be too high to do anything, and there was much for her to do. Working her way back to RJ, Maia thoroughly covered their tracks, an eye on the sun the entire time. When she had finished that, she struck out in a completely different direction. Simultaneously leading RJ in the wrong direction and searching for food at the same time.

Quickly capturing a few animals that would do for now, Maia made her way back to their hiding place. Inside she quickly caged them and cleaned up a bit. Several large yawns told her that it was near midday. Finally relenting to the draws of sleep, Maia curled up near Roxy, protecting her. Sliding an arm around her, she fell into a light sleep, ears quirked for any intruders.

In no time, the little tyke was out like a light. It had been such an eventful first day and she was down for the count. She stirred mildly as she felt her mother tucking her in with more furs, but right after? she was gone to the world and set to sleep her first day away.


ELSEWHERE!


Shifting quite uncomfortably against the tree that he had tucked himself and his daughter against, his wanted-to-be-closed eyes slowly cracked open. At first RJ thought his mind was playing tricks on him, but after blinking and rubbing them a few times, he realized his little girl was gone! Snarling, his eyes flaring with his heated temper, ears laying back, he jumped right up to look around for his spawn.

So fueled by his newly discovered possessiveness over her, he hardly even gave the sun a single thought... until he could feel the light singing his skin, jumping back into the shade with a dark growl. "DAMMIT!" he shouted as he raged. Scenting the air, he caught the familiar scent, and it pissed him off so completely. "Maiiaaaaaaaaa...." RJ's tail lashed behind him. He knew she was jealous, but to stoop so low?! Right then and there, he was determined to find his daughter... and tear Maia a new one.

Slowly he sat back down, glowering. The sun was too high already, too strong to venture out in even with the cover of the trees. More than livid, his muscles twitched as he waited and waited for the sun to go down, staring off into the [completely, totally wrong] direction of her scent.

The little thing had been sleeping peacefully, only stirring as her mother came back, curling a protective arm around her. Wriggling and turning to face her, she nestled herself against her. falling back into a deep sleep.

Several days later, Maia was astounded she hadn't come across RJ nor he them. She had scented him plenty of times, and made sure that Roxy knew how to cover their tracks before she'd taught her anything else. The little 'pire had quickly adapted to Maia's lifestyle, soaking everything like a sponge. Maia was quite proud of her 'daughter,' and together they lived happily. Thinking on how best to reward Roxy's hard work, Maia leapt from tree to tree, moving farther away from the girl to give her a chance to hunt on her own.

With a flick of her ear, Maia caught the faint sound of something searching far below. Pushing herself farther into the shadows, crimson eyes glanced about for the cause as she sniffed about for a scent. Her eyes widened as she realized it was RJ, and she remained still in hopes he hadn't caught sight or scent of her.

Grinning as she more than happily followed her mother from treetop to treetop, Roxy was so excited to be out on the hunt on such a beautiful night. She had gone on practice hunts with Maia and the likes, but this would be her first full-blown hunt, and she just couldn't wait. There had been plenty of training, and yet, oddly enough it seemed as if they had been hiding and fleeing quite a bit too. Something Roxy was still trying to figure out.

While lost in her momentary train of thought as she worked to catch up to Maia, her foot slipped on the branch she was leaping onto, and Roxy went crashing right down to the ground by the tree right below her mother. Groaning, she just decided to lay there for a few in a lump of ouch. Roxy moved just enough to rub her jaw as it smacked the ground and felt the most sore, too distracted to notice her father right in front of her


It had been quite the hunt of his own for RJ. Trying to find his daughter and that traitorous, spawn stealing Maia. Had he been anyone but himself, RJ might have given up on the search, but he was a stubborn jackass and resolved himself not to stop until he found them. He knew he had come close quite a bit by scent, but just barely missing the two each time. RJ knew that today would be different. It had to be.

Hearing the rustling of leaves above his head that had followed other sounds, RJ paused beneath a tree, his nose sniffing about to try and catch the scent. Right at the moment that he realized it was Maia's scent he was now picking up on, was the moment someone came crashing to the ground before him, eyes flying wide open as he stared at the groaning heap before him.

Questioning as he stepped closer, his eyes narrowed".... Roxy?!... MAIA!" RJ's head turned quickly, his body following as he leaped right up into the tree, reaching out and grabbing at her wildly.

When Maia spotted Roxy falling, her first instinct was to check her daughter for injuries. Before she could move though, RJ was in the tree with her, grabbing at her. With a sharp growl, she dodged his advance and leapt away. "RJ, what a pleasant surprise," Maia smoothly said. Fur bristling from the hostility she could feel coming off him, Maia flicked her gaze back and forth between them and her daughter. Roxy had yet to move from the prone position on the ground she had landed in.

Unable to resist for long, Maia jumped to the ground. Landing softly on the balls of her feet, she rushed forward to the lump that was her daughter on the ground. "Roxy, are you alright?" concern filled her voice. Visibly checking the vampire, she couldn't see any signs of bleeding or broken bones. Slightly relieved, she made sure to warily watch RJ as she waited for Roxy to respond.

Driven by rage as he saw Maia, grasping and growling at her, RJ's eyes were nearly blazing red with rage... especially at her oh-so-cool greeting. "Oh... how I can say the same, Maia...." It was a pleasant surprise, as he could figure out how to get back at her for stealing his daughter in her jealous fit. Glowering, he stalked along, keeping his distance as his eyes never moved from their target as the traitor moved in on his daughter.

Groaning as her mother came close, Roxy slowly sat herself up, rubbing her jaw. "Yeah, mom... I'm okay. Smacked my jaw real good... think I cracked a fang...." A small hiss made it past her lips at the pain, wincing. As the throbbing pain in her jaw was soothed some, becoming numbing, her eyes found their way to RJ. Ears flicking up then back, she gave a small growl, leaning in to whisper to her mom "Who's that? He looks.... familiar"

Wanting nothing more than to rush to his daughter, he refrained for a while, his muscles twitching, anxious to have her back. He gave a protesting and pained growl as his daughter was calling the traitor 'mom', it bruising his ego. Roxy was his daughter!, not hers. He paced back and forth like a caged lion, watching, waiting.

Her fur fluffed up and muscles tensing, Maia took a deep breath to calm herself before replying to her daughter. "That, dear daughter, is your father. He's not exactly happy with me though," she explained. Crimson eyes peering up into the tree, she could see he was anxious, pacing back and forth like a caged animal. With a soft growl, she flexes her fingers, keeping on her guard in case he attacked.

"I kept you away from him so you wouldn't have to see us fight. I wanted to make sure you were brought up in the best environment possible," Maia calmly told Roxy. It would kill her if Roxy decided she wanted nothing to do with the two of them. Almost against her will she had loved this child, and she would do everything in her power to keep her. Watching RJ, she made sure to reveal that in her eyes.
