“He had many strange sights to keep him cheerful or to make him sad. I asked him had he ever seen the faeries, and got the reply, 'Am I not annoyed with them?' I asked too if he had ever seen the banshee. 'I have seen it,' he said, 'down there by the water, batting the river with its hands.' ” ― W.B. Yeats, The Celtic Twilight: Faerie and Folklore

The Tale of the Banshees
The Banshees are a fairly special race of Faekats, in that they freely move between the world of the living and the world of spirits. A Banshee can phase in and out of visibility, and through being part-spirit, they have contact with otherworldly forces. Banshees are a race of prophets and seers. The future is an open book to them.
Or, it was once. Long ago, the Banshees were known as the Fáidh, and were famous throughout Faetasia for their accurate and clear prophecies. A foolish queen made the mistake of challenging Moira, the Goddess of Prophecy, saying that as the leader of a race of spiritual seers, she was an equal to the goddess. This moment of hubris on the part of the queen was doom for the entire race. Moira could not take away their ability to see into the future, but she could twist it. Banshees are now cursed to only see tragedy, and as such, they took on a new name. Soon, they were no longer known as legendary prophets. Instead, they were shunned as omens of doom, because the appearance of a Banshee could only mean that some great tragedy was soon to strike.
The race split in two, with some remaining loyal to their queen and the rest breaking away out of rage at her foolish mistake. Those who remained loyal became known as the Dílis, lead by the Queen's older daughter, Caitriona; those who broke away became known as the Cneámhaire, led by her younger daughter, Ciara. The Queen herself vanished, and some claim that she simply faded away out of grief. Others say she is in hiding, so deeply ashamed of what she had done that she no longer wishes to show her face.

The Dílis: Those Who Remain
The Dílis, led by Queen Clíodhna's Good-aligned daughter, Caítriona Bean-sídhe, are the Banshees that remain loyal to Clíodhna despite what she caused for her race. They follow the absent Queen and declare that, foolish behavior or not, she deserves the allegiance and support of her people. They point out that everyone makes mistakes, and that she is clearly repentant for her actions.
The word "Dílis," in Irish Gaelic, means "faithful" or "loyal."

The Cneámhaire: Those Who Rebel
The Cneámhaire, led by Queen Clíodhna's Ebil-aligned daughter Ciara Bean-sídhe, are those Banshees who broke away from the Queen's rule after the disaster that cursed their race. They declare that a Queen foolish enough to challenge a goddess and cause the ruin of the Banshees does not deserve their allegiance and support. They refuse her banner and call themselves a community of equals, though they look to Lady Ciara for leadership.
In Irish Gaelic, the word "cneámhaire" means "rogue".

The Unaligned: Those Who Turn Their Backs
Some Banshees choose not to follow Caítriona or Ciara, and choose to remove themselves from the budding conflict altogether. They may see both sides as extreme, prefer simply not to associate, or be so far removed from their fellows that the conflict has not touched them.
