This is a small section of one of my fictional stories. It's about a young girl with the mental disorder of schizophrenia who is not allowed to talk unless the 'voices' say she can. But when she meets the new guy at school, she faces the desicion of obeying the 'voices' or going against everything she's grown to know for a boy she just met.
NOTE: I have only studied a small amount about this illness so please excuse me if some of the details are inaccurate.

I can't see my friends.
I hear them, I talk to them.
But I can't see them.
They have no voice though, just thoughts.
Other people call me weird, different, crazy. They say my friends don't exist. They say I'm just talking to myself. But I know my friend's are there. They help me. They know what's right. Always.

It was just another normal morning for me.
My alarm went off for me to get ready for school. The ringing of the alarm running through my head long after I turn it off.
My mum makes me go to school. My friends call her silly. They say I don't need school. I don't need other friends. But I don't want mum getting sad so I made a deal, with my friends. Now I'm not allowed to talk unless they say it's OK.

Today was almost like a normal school day. But I saw the new kid and for some reason, I wanted to talk to him. The voices told me I wasn't allowed, but I did anyway. My friends did not speak. My only friend's were angry at me. I had said hello to him as he walked past.
Worried, I looked for a place I could apologize to my friend's in private. The new guy watched me walk away.

The voices didn't answer me. I apologized, but it wasn't good enough, I would try to make it up to them later...

This is wonderful. I don't know anything about Schizophrinia, but it's still well written and such.
and It makes me desprately want to read more of this.

I really like this, but I'm really wondering what the voices are saying! But then again, leaving out exactly what the "friends" are saying kind of makes it more mysterious and captivating. smile

Depending on the severity of the schizophrenia, you may consider having your characters mental state degrade to the point where she no longer disobeys the voices in her head, but instead takes all they say for truth and granted.

The further the state of someone afflicted with schizophrenia degrades, the more out of touch they become with reality, and the more irrational their thought processes are.

You could also incorporate paranoia into the characters themes, as it is a fairly common progression of schizophrenia.

You may also want to look into schizo-affective disorder as a device for your character, as it can incorporate other themes of mental disorders including bipolar syndrome, should you want to screw them up a little more.

Thankyou so much for this! I've been working on another story but am moving onto continuing this one next. I'll definately take your ideas on board!
