RUNIK

"Good afternoon," says a pleasant baritone somewhere out of your sight as you wake up lying somewhere in what feels like a field of grass. "You are no longer on your home world. Welcome to the world of... well... welcome to this world."

You don't know why this sudden transportation in your sleep doesn't frighten or distress you at all, but it doesn't. It's only slightly more off-putting when you realize that the voice isn't putting pauses in the right places as it - he? - speaks.

"Events have necessitated that you... be transported. This world is civilized, within a... certain definition of the term. Do feel free to take a look... around. Oh, and before I forget. Interested parties have requested you... receive assistance. Three gifts, prearranged, and a fourth from myself to aid... you on your journey. Have fun."

You feel a sense of the voice disappearing, and as you sit up you see four pieces of... jewellry? Yes, they look like jewellry, just floating in front of you. As you put them on one by one you hear the voice explaining how to invoke a Rune.

THE ROLEPLAY

There are four slots available in this roleplay, one for each of the four characters. You will each start on separate continents, and will interact with the world at your own pace. I will play the part of the 'world,' running enemies and NPCs and determining the results of attacks for purposes of plot advancement. Unlike in many roleplays, battles in this thread will not drag on for multiple pages and have no clear winner. There will be a victor, and it will likely be established within five to six posts between the two of us.

Oh, before I forget, the backstory of the world is already typed out and I'll reveal it through IC interaction as the roleplay progresses.

The usual rules related to obscenity, innuendo, and other bits of vulgarity apply lightly to this thread, as your characters will all be at least 20 (hopefully at least 25) and will, if they are not at the outset, become more than a bit worldly as time passes. As a warning, I would like this roleplay to remain active on all four fronts and will not hesitate to kick your character back to their homeworld and thus permanently out of the roleplay if they fail to post for two straight weeks, even with prior notice. I cannot timeskip to the next day until everyone is in a position where it is feasible, and I will not have the roleplay held at an eternal one-day limbo for the sake of a person on a two-month hiatus. That said, you are free to make a legacy character with all of your old character's Runes if your old slot is still open when you return.

Please do not invoke more than one Rune per post, unless it is Helican or some other Rune whose effect is both harmless and instantaneous.

To clarify, yes your characters are human. No they do not have any special abilities whatsoever other than those granted by the Runes. No they are not automatically better at Runecasting than everyone else, in fact they start out quite a bit worse since they have no innate skill (as the natives do). Yes you absolutely will be killed if you try to start a massacre in the middle of a village or do something similarly stupid. These people all have better Runes and more experience than you, remember. smile

THE RUNES

Rune Types
Runes come in several different Types and multiple Classes, with the Type determining the kind of effect manifest and the Class determining the power (usually). The Types are as follows:

Healing Runes
'Healing Rune' is a blanket term used to refer to any magically-defensive Rune, from Runic shields to actual healing magic. Healing magic is by far the most common invocation for a Healing Rune, though more powerful Runes can be used as magical shields or even break curses.

Physical Runes
By far the most common non-Utility Rune type, Physical Runes are Runes that simply transform into metallic nonmagical weapons when invoked. Physical Runes are incredibly weak, the Runic equivalent of a disposable spork, and are uniquely vulnerable to almost all magical attacks - Fire melts them, Ice makes them brittle, Lightning damages the Physical wielder double, Earth can control the weapon form, Life amplifies its effect on the wielder, and Death makes the weapon form rust into uselessness. Physical Runes weigh, when invoked, what one would expect a weapon made entirely of dense metal to weigh. However, a user who invokes a Physical Rune is able to wield the resultant weapon as if it had no weight.

Cursing Runes
Cursing Runes are the 'negative' to Healing Runes' 'positive,' bestowing curses on targets or areas in exchange for the user taking on a milder version of the same curse. Most weaker Cursing Runes allow the user to dispel the curse at will, though more powerful Cursing Runes and even some weaker ones produce a permanent effect.

Binding Runes
Binding Runes hinder the target in some way, be it binding their Runecrafting or their physical body, or even locking their Runes so they cannot be invoked. Binding Runes always duplicate their effect on the user or include the user within the Bound area.

Travel Runes
A 'Travel Rune' is any Rune that makes use of an Otherspace, one of the infinity of microdimensions that exist in and around Runik. Travel Runes may have almost any function that deals with travel or communication at a distance or between worlds. Magical levitation, crystal balls, and pocket-dimensional traps are all Travel Runes.

Summoning Runes
Summoning Runes bring a bound Summon out of the Rune and into Runik for a time. The creature Summoned may be of any kind, sentient or nonsentient, and is under the physical and mental control of the user of their Summoning Rune so long as they are Summoned. The user of a Summoning Rune may communicate verbally but otherwise cannot move other than to dispel the Summon so long as it is active.

Elemental Runes
Elemental Runes fall into six categories set into three opposing groups - Fire and Ice, Lightning and Earth, Life and Death. Fire deals with temperature in general, not merely hot temperatures, though that is by far the most common Fire Elemental Rune type. Ice deals with frozen liquids of any kind. Lightning deals with anything related to the weather, though it is dubbed Lightning because that is the most common attack type. Earth deals with any stone- or metal-related Rune. Life is mostly plants, while Death deals not only with supernatural means of death but also with cancelling attacks and redirecting them. Overusing a single Element causes both that Element and the opposed one to deteriorate - thus, using nothing but Fire Elemental Runes and never using Lightning, Earth, Life, or Death - or using them very sparingly - would eventually cause you to be unable to use Fire or Ice Elemental Runes at all.

Parasite Runes
Parasite Runes are designed to be implanted into the user's body or to change the body once invoked. Parasite Runes may store up to four different forms for the body part they are bound to, not including the original form. The piece of jewelry containing the Rune is visible regardless of the form switched to and cannot be concealed. The body parts a Parasite Rune may be bound to are: Head above the shoulders, torso above the waist to the shoulders, legs between the knees and waist, legs between the ankles and knees, feet to the ankles, left arm from the shoulder to the wrist, right arm from the shoulder to the wrist, either hand to the wrist.

Rune Classes
Runes are divided into ten Classes, which give a guide to the quality of the Runecraft that went into making the Rune. This is generally a good indicator of the power of the Rune, but exceptions do exist. The Classes are thus:

Broken
A broken Rune is damaged in some irreparable way and is utterly useless.

Utility
A Utility-class Rune is good for unskilled labor and other similar tasks, but not much else. Very weak Runes such as sledgehammer Physical Runes and similar, are classed here.
Example: Shovel

Basic
'Basic-class' refers specifically to all Physical Runes intricate enough to not be classed Utility. No Physical Rune is classed higher than this.
Example: Aquila

Common
Common-class Runes are generally given to children setting out to learn a trade. This class refers to many Runes more versatile and useful than Basic runes but still commonly available. Any Rune that a basic Runecrafter could create is classed here.
Example: Dolorous Skies

Good
Good-class Runes are more powerful in general and are harder to find. Small towns will have a few Good-class Runes for sale. These are commonly found in larger cities.
Example: Portable Portal

Excellent
Excellent-class Runes are rarely found in smaller towns, and if so will be a town's treasure or possibly a Life Elemental Rune used to ensure a bountiful harvest.
Example: Floating Leaf

Superior
Superior-class Runes are commonly the family heirlooms of noble families. It takes a very skilled Runecrafter to make a Superior-class Rune.
Example: Glass Funhouse

Perfect
Perfect-class Runes are absolutely flawless in every way, with no mistakes or even microscopic slips during the creation of the Rune. These are incredibly rare, and only three to four Perfect-class Runes of a specific type exist in the entire world at any given time.
Example: Yggdrasil

Unique
Unique-class Runes are one-of-a-kind and cannot be duplicated via any means. This is not an indicator necessarily of power, but of rarity and thus value. Unique-class Runes may be only as strong as a Utility-class or stronger than a Perfect-class, but will be extremely valuable regardless.
Example: Cross Grave

Custom
Custom-class Runes are a plot-sensitive category. More will be revealed on them as the plot progresses.
Example: Uatus

OMGIISONFIYAH

Name: Virgil Fox
Gender: Dude
Age: 26
Physical Description: Virgil is a decently sized person, coming in at just under 6 feet (5' 10") He has an average weight and an average build. His usual attire consists of baggy pants, a t-shirt and a black overcoat
Personality description: Virgil can be a bit odd and unmotivated at times. At others he's fairly focused and serious, it's uncertain which part of his personality is just an act, which could make Virgil a potentially ineffective fighter or an extremely smart one.
Current Runes

Aquila
Physical Rune
Basic-class
While inactive, the Aquila is a plain silver-colored band of metal worn on one of your fingers, emblazoned with a skull emblem flanked by the wings of an eagle. When active, the Aquila becomes a one-handed axe with a battleaxe head, the skull-and-wings emblem etched onto the side so that the axe blades appear to be made of eagle feathers. The axe is made entirely of metal.

Dolorous Skies
Elemental Rune (Lightning)
Common-class
Dolorous Skies is a Lightning Elemental Rune that worsens the local weather within two miles each time it is invoked. The stages of weather are as follows: Sunny, Overcast, Light Rain, Heavy Rain, Heavy Rain with Thunder, Thunderstorm, Hurricane, Devastation. Dolorous Skies always produces rain regardless of the local temperature, though the rain may freeze after it reaches the ground if the ambient temperature is cold enough to warrant it. It will not freeze before it touches the ground or some other solid object. Dolorous Skies is an etched silver ring with a smoky gray gem set into the center. The gem will shatter if a Devastation-level storm is ever invoked, rendering the Rune thereafter useless.

Key
Travel Rune
Utility-class
This Rune is an old-fashioned key made of some silver-colored metal on a bracelet made of the same material. It has no function that is readily apparent.

Helican
Binding Rune
Utility-class
A plain silver ring, Helican creates a circular barrier of infinite height centered on a target and with a radius equal to twice the distance between the target and the user, up to 400 feet. If the user or the target attempt to exit the ring they are transported to the opposite side of the ring facing in the same direction as when they 'stepped out.' Attacks are absorbed by the barrier, and any living being not in physical contact with the target, user, or some part of clothing or carried object on one of those two may leave the barrier (but not enter it) at their own discretion. The barrier cannot be exited by Travel Runes unless they allow interdimensional travel, as the area within the barrier is a pocket dimension.

His build tho is rather toned giving him a surfer look if not for the military buzz when he is standing in just boxers tho it's easy to tell he likely is faster then he is strong. The difference between the good guys and the bad guys

Looking at the item's he had been gifted with Jacob sighed a bit as he pocketed the orb and put on the other item's. From what he had gotten from the voice there was a reason for him to be transported but the reason exactly was not made clear. "What would be the reason then" he muttered to himself looking around the field. From what he could see currently there was nothing in either direction tho from what he could make out there were tree's to what he believed to be the east. He couldn't be sure of the direction tho not sure if this place he had been brought to was the same as his own.

Moving towards the forest Jacob kept his pace slow and his head on a swivel. If this world needed help it was likely that there were forces beyond him that were likely lurking around. "Why would you summon me tho" he muttered wishing he had more time to speak with the voice. There was several things he wanted information about but now could only find them himself. If he would be able to even find out currently he was not in a good position to be on a different planet where he was currently alone. Especially just in his regular clothing.
Is whether they use a human shield or make themselves one.

Zil was a little dumbfounded when the voice stopped speaking. "Oh jewelry. I see...", he said exaggeratedly as he put on the runes. "Lessee... Bracelet. Bracelets, ring. Hip chain. Cool... And really gay." He looked around for any signs of his teammates. He could have sworn that before he was suddenly transported, he was lying on the floor of the enemy's grounds, having been shot. But where he was now, there was no trace of where he was then.

He got up, dusting himself off and straightening his jacket and looking around. He pushed a button on his comm and tried to see if anyone would answer. "Blood fox here. Come in." Nothing.... Just the sound of transmission noise. He pulled the thing out of his ear and dropped it on the ground. Useless.

He then remembered that invoking shenanigans he did not quite get when the voice told him how. He tried shaking his right hand, wondering if the bracelet with the dog head would do something. "Whoa!", he yelled out in surprise as it turned into a five foot long war hammer. "That's a big a** hammer", he muttered, trying to lift it as his arm was pulled down by the mental concept that big a** objects were heavy. "Meh, maybe later", he said to himself, trying to make it turn back. When he did, he shook his hand, deciding to test out the others later and be more prepared for their surprises next time. For now, he felt a little thirsty and ventured out to see if he can find food, water and maybe lodgings. Or better yet... a reason for why the bloody heck he was even sent here.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 05, 2012 8:45 pm

Lenore hesitated in following the voice's instructions, usually very skeptic and cynical of others' authority. She sat there, a bit bewildered still as to her sudden existence in this new world. Lenore could've sworn that when she went to bed next to her husband-to-be that night, she would've woken up right besides him the next morning. Yet this was not the case and the introductory voice did nothing to answer her many, many questions.
She remained noiseless, noting that she was alone wherever she was. It was quiet and the wind was still. Alas, finding that Lenore really had no choice but to move forward, she reached out towards the first item. It held familiarity about it, oddly enough, and when she put the simple band on her finger, it seemed to fit perfectly. She looked about it on her finger, bemused slightly before taking the bracelet pendant, a silver ring, and a cup.

Lenore stood, holding her items delicately. Gifts. She never did much with jewelry, a rather plain woman, and she didn't know quite well what to do with a cup. "What useless gifts," she murmured but made the conscience decision to not throw these gifts away.
As for her current predicament, she assumed this was just a charade, a dream much like Alice in her little Wonderland of imagination. She smirked to herself, amused in the idea that she was dreaming of this right now even though she was 29 and no longer young enough to imagine such fantastical landscapes.

She moved, clueless. The voice...it said she had a higher purpose here. But what purpose did she have with only two rings, a bracelet, and a cup?

JACOB

After a few minutes of walking, the trees shimmer and disappear, an illusion to conceal the two haggard-looking men waiting to ambush you. One of them appears behind you by using some sort of Rune and the other steps forward while invoking another Rune that transforms into a bow in his hands. There appear to be no arrows. "Hand over ye Runes and we'll not kill you."

ZIL

You walk for several hours, finding a few tiny brooks in the field without any water pure enough to drink, before rounding a corner around a reasonably-tall cliff and coming suddenly onto the outskirts of a village. There are perhaps two dozen buildings in the village, at least twenty of them residential. Aside from that, there appears to be a general store, a pub, the town administration building, and an inn (partially attached to the pub with a covered walkthrough.)

LENORE

You walk for perhaps an hour before coming to a well-trod dirt road. It runs slightly crooked in both directions past the limit of your vision, and there is no indication of how far it may go or what may be at the other end.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 06, 2012 3:58 am

Zil was very much ticked by the miserable turn of events. He remained silent as he had been walking for some time now to no avail. The brooks only served to get his hopes up before failing him completely by being impure. He wished he had his hiking backpack. He was sure there was a strainer or a water sterilizing gizmo in there or something but noooo... He has to put up with walking for several hours in search of drinkable water. That was when he spotted the village. "Yes. Yes!!", he exclaimed triumphantly, thinking he could just barge in there and get himself a bucket of water and be done with it. He was tired but he put his remaining strength to walking briskly towards the village. When he was finally there, he let out a heavy breath as though expelling all the problems of the past few hours -- nearly dying of a gunshot wound, waking up somewhere completely alien to him, the trauma of magical gay jewelry. He felt he could forget it all if he could only finally get himself some food and water.

He walked coolly among the villagers, casually saluting them here and there, winking at the ladies especially. Pretending to be alright -- something he mastered from many many instances of almost dying and being spared from restful peace. He headed straight to the inn as he had spotted it, looking around consciously, before walking up to the bar, feeling that he was being watched but he kept a smile on his face as he went along, hoping not to have offended some big boss guy with his mere existence, not that it hadn't happened before in an alternate reality.

The difference between the good guys and the bad guys

Standing there looking at the two people Jacob cursed to himself under his breath. He hadn't been paying sharp enough attention and had been gotten the drop on in this land. Sizing the two up neither seemed to be very stable physically wise and likely would go down with a few hits from close range. The fact that one tho had appeared behind him after being infront of him for a moment told him atleast one of the runes he held was something of the travel. The other's being a bow must have been elemental seeing as there was no metal on it tho what element he wasn't to sure about.

"I am just a passing poor man I mean neither of you any harm" Jacob said finally as he held his hands up keeping himself placed where he could see the man behind him any time he looked over his shoulder slightly. He didn't want to bring it to a fight as his own runes were neither one's of much strength. If he only knew what the other men held as runes as he looked over them slowly trying to see any jewelry the both of them held. If he was given a chance to bring a fight into close range he would as he thought about using the orb in his pocket as a distraction to take one of them out if they got to close.
Is whether they use a human shield or make themselves one.
