Another mild misty day at the haunted house, and Jove was once again stalking the halls.

He could smell them. The hunters. They must have come frequently, because that human odour was all over the place. The scent of humans, and their sweat, and the metallic tang of blood, their harsh cologne stinging the ghost's little nose and the lingering scent of tobacco in the air... Here and there he could smell bits and pieces, but the nature of the haunted house was vague and shifted often. He could never really track one down in particular.

The canine growled, heading down another dark hallway, padding soundlessly through the gloom with glowing eyes... A menacing figure... If he wasn't less than a foot in height, and fluffy enough to put the fluffiest of feather dusters to shame. A cute face that was typical of the happy-go-lucky foxfire minipets, and the adorable proportions of a puppy, it was his curse...

But as he had been learning, it could also be very useful. He just had to find a hunter...

Rep liked the haunted house. It was unnerving when you were alone, but at the same time it was dangerous. There wasn't much thrill on jungle duty or underwater outpost, simply hours upon hours of waiting with the only hope of reprieve when someone relieved you of duty. The haunted house was unpredictable and you could never be too sure what or who you might run into in the dust ridden fusty smelling halls.

There was nothing quiet about the way Rep moved, heavy steel toed boots crunching across crusty ancient wood and a stride that made no effort to hide that he was there. As far as he was concerned here he was a predator and anything that came his way did so at its own peril. Trust no one or nothing, suspect your senses, all lessons learned in dealings over time with Halloween.

Today though, it seemed like the house was as dead as many of the denizens of Halloween and Rep stopped with an irritable curl of his lip to check the time on his phone. He hadn't even been patrolling for half a shift yet. He leaned back against the wall with a heavy sigh.

"Going to be a ******** long night." he said to no one.

The fog seemed to just thicken, an unsettling quality to this area. Jove was never fond of fog, not since the first field trip he attended and that terrible island. And whether it was his memories or the fog itself working it's way into his skin, it chilled him in a way that wasn't purely physical. It was so thick sometimes he wasn't sure where he had gotten to, if he had ended up inside or out, if he were surrounded by trees or walls...

Didn't matter! Jove reminded himself of his goal, he was here to hunt some hunters. And that was when he saw it. A tall figure, definitely not furniture or shrubbery or inanimate. His ears perked as it spoke. Definitely not shrubbery! It was a hunter!

The pup's head lowered as he stalked towards his enemy, the wolf-like hunting posture made laughable by his small size and copious amounts of fluff.

Rep was expecting anything in the haunted house to at least be relatively large and at first, remained oblivious to the tiny ball of fluff currently stalking him not far off. He wasn't even paying attention to his peripheral vision, while checking his phone deciding it was as good a time as any to catch up on the island's contained network twitter.

This was good... All going according to Jove's plans. The pup's eyes glinted, but his pale blue spotted body seemed to blend perfectly with the foggy surroundings. Stealthy footsteps were not enough to pull that hunter away from whatever he was looking at, and it allowed the pup to creep right up next to him and...

CHOMP!

Two rows of sharp, needle-like teeth sank into the hunter's ankle.

Rep was thinking to himself that it had been pretty quiet on the phone network of late and was about to type something when he was roundly punished for his distraction. He almost dropped it as he yelped in pain and surprise, juggling the device in an attempt not to drop it while shaking his foot frantically.

"Get off you wee ******** b*****d!" he snarled. From here it looked like he was being attacked by a small fur ruff, a tribble or a tiny dog. It didn't matter, all that mattered was it had teeth and those teeth were damn sharp.

In a desperate gesture of his hand he summoned Tracey, not entirely a good idea given that the axe itself was about twelve foot long and the corridor they were in was decidedly limited in how far he could swing it.

<> he snarled in his thoughts at the fallen angel.

He tried flailing the axe at his foot in what was a frankly ridiculous looking gesture.

Somehow he got an edge with some leverage to try and pry him off.

The swell of success the little ghost felt dissipated the moment he realized he may have literally bit off more than he could chew. Once again Jove had more or less rushed in without considering the consequences. This wasn't a simple trainee he was facing...

The giant weapon, clumsy as it was in such a tight space, caught him across the middle during the fit of flailing and sent him flying. And it HURT! He flew several feet before landing, bouncing once and then he was back with his legs under him. Still, he was determined not to give the hunter much time for thought as he ricocheted back in the hunter's direction with teeth ready for another chomp.

Looking like a little minipet might keep him safe from being weaponized, but it wouldn't keep him safe from being caught!

Rep wasn't used to creatures that went for his legs, normally attacks were more eye level than ankle level. It was a whole other challenge as he tried to field off tiny brutal fangs with the flat of the blade while backing up enough to get a swing in.

The hook at the bladed end got caught in a doorframe and he just about lost his temper.

"For ******** sake Tracey." he growled, followed up by another colourful slew of angry expletives, as with a loud crunch - he outright hauled the axe out of the frame with a loud splinter of wood

The furious action was accompanied by him once again swinging the thing at Jove in an attempt to clip him, missing more than once before he managed to catch him with the blade.

The large blade sliced through air, fluff, and then the ghostly whatever-it-was that made up the little foxfire's body, and a splatter of dark, unhealthy blood flew through the air, followed by the pup himself. This hunter was going to start taking chunks out of him left and right if he wasn't careful!

And what was worse, the ill-timed blow threw off Jove's attempt to use his FEAR. When he struck the ground, he landed with a POOF of mushroom spores that was both ineffective and too far away. Not good.

The foxfire leaped to his feet once again and growled, trying to re-evaluate the situation before charging in again.

There was an edge of panic that hadn't been present before as Rep spotted the mushroom spores. They might have missed but they hinted at something more dangerous than teeth at the disposal of the little creature he was fighting. He couldn't let it get the one-up on him.

But fighting was more and more frustrating in this closed space and he had the sinking feeling he was going to be in a bit of trouble for the sheer damage he was doing to the walls. As long as he didn't bring the whole ******** place down on their heads he was hopeful it'd be allright.

Instead of trying to attack or dodge, Jove just hunkered down on the ground to avoid most of the damage. The blow splattered more blood and scattered more harmless spores, but the little ghost didn't flinch. He took a deep breath, and pulled as much FEAR as he could from the surroundings, absorbing it into his body.

Normally he barreled in without thought, but this hunter... He was too strong, and the pup had to be super careful. Jove needed to take a moment now before he ran out of chances.

Rep's temper was slowly simmering to absolute boiling point. Jove was damn hard to hit, slippery as all hell and this building was outright getting on his nerves.

The charge crackled in the axe, runes bleeding off into the air around it and he seized for the power, hauling it to the fore. There was no room for the usual leap that brought Tracey back down on top of his enemies, only the increased power in the swing.

But it would be enough.

He swung the axe with all the power available to him, crashing through the walls either side of the corridor. He struck, but it was at a cost he quickly learned as a large amount of dusty timber and plaster collapsed on top of him from the ceiling above.

It took him a bit to pull himself out of the wreckage of the structural damage, swearing the whole time.

Jove cowered as the hunter began really thrashing around. Or at least trying, the weapon was striking the walls and tearing pieces apart, raining down chunks of stuff here and there. And what was worse, that giant hunter looked like he was REALLY ready to squish a ghost.

With wide eyes, the pup clung to the floor, and the moment he saw his opportunity he ran. Forward. To resume cowering immediately under the hunter as the ceiling came down in huge chunks.

As the dust settled, Jove waited patiently as the hunter unburied them both. Once he was sure he wasn't going to be stepped on, he crept up to the hunter's ankle and...

CHOMP!

Rep coughed shook dust out of his hair and tried to get a handle on where the hell the little rat had gotten to, peering around in the clouded gloom.

He needn't have bothered. The teeth in his ankle said a lot more than his eyes might have and he yelped in what was, all considered not a very manly way.

Oh good god really? He had to run? He was never going to live this down. Ever.

"I'll remember this." he snarled, absolutely bristling with humiliation and frustration.

Dogs.

Taking hold of the pendant, he snarled the trigger words and vanished.

He'd have to explain the mess to the portal guys, that would be fun.
