That night, Gene would find a note tapped to her door, how or when it got there was unknown, but once opened it was clear who had sent it and why.

Carhop Cavalier

"Arrive at the gym pool at exactly 11:00pm for your exam. Dress warmly. Tardiness is not an option.
- Avery Chase"

Well that was good an all. An exam meant you would be moving up a year. However... by the time the note was found and the message read, Gene would soon realize that the time on the clock had just turned 10:45pm.

...

....

Better run.

Well, this was a mixed surprise. She was surely glad to be moving up a year, but she only had 15 minutes to get all the way from the ghost dorms to the gym pool.

That was nearly all the way across campus, and Avery wouldn't tolerate any tardiness - the student body knew about his grumpiness; and it certainly wasn't a line the ghoul would be willing to cross.

The note had said dress warm - but there was no time. She rushed out of her dorm, phasing though as many things as she could to make it on time, and meet the grumpy librarian for her exam.

"Mr...Avery...I'm...here." She puffed, meeting the behemoth at exactly 11.

The moment Gene opened the door to the gym, she would be greeted with a cold breeze and--snow? To the one side of the gym--where the pool was supposed to be--was a blanket of snow. Where it came from and why it was here was a mystery, but standing on the edge of it was Avery.

He gave the ghoul a brief look before, motioning her to come forward.

"Careful where you step." He warned, directing her around where the pool, was now buried beneath a foot of snow. "Today I'm going to test both your judgement skills and your awareness of your surroundings." He explained. "Both of which are required if you plan on surviving."

He moved away from the pool, coming closer to the ghost ghoul before he stopped and held out something. Something dark and when he passed them to her, she would find they were heavy. Weights.

"Put these on."

The pool was...frozen over? Was the humble and grumpy librarian really capable of doing something like that? She supposed, with grasping and manipulating his fear, he could. Perhaps this is what extra lessons and mentoring got you.

She was all for it, if so.

"Yes, sir." She said hesitantly, giving another glance at the pool. She could still see the water beneath. Slipping the weights around her ankles and finding herself very much heavier, she gave a little frown.

"Alright...so, how am I going to be tested?"

The behemoth nodded approvingly, arms crossed over his chest as she strapped the weights on.

"By walking across the frozen surface of the pool." Which, as easy as it sounded--not to mention, lame--probably wasn't all that easy, given that this was an exam and exams were never easy. "Within this building, for the duration of this exam, your abilities have been sealed. The snow is to cover and muffle any cracks in the ice. You will have to rely on careful footing, attentive hearing, and smarts to make it across. If not..." He pressed a foot against the ice, easily shoving it past and into 'not' frozen water. Though it did look cold. Very cold. "The exam will end."

There was a stern look on his face as he removed his foot from the water.

"You can't always rely on your naturally given abilities. There will be times when you find yourself without them and in some cases crippled because of them. This exam will teach you to get by without them. You may take as long as you need to cross the pool. But I'm sure you are already aware that idling too long won't do you any good and in fact can be counter productive. The weights," He tapped his own ankle, indicating the ones strapped to her, "if you haven't figured it out for yourself yet are to make up for your own lack of weight. You may be a ghost and though you yourself may not be burdened by weight, there may be a time when you will be required to carry a fallen ally."

Now he moved to stand at the side of the pool.

"Start when you are ready."

Gene must make it across the semi-frozen pool.
Natural abilities are sealed and weights have been added. She has to literally walk, while carefully picking her way across.

Roll two 6-sided die

First dice represents awareness

Odd - you can't detect anything wrong, yet unknowingly the ice is cracking beneath your feet.
Even - The ice beneath your feet feels off. A slight shift in movement, or perhaps a small crack can be heard beneath the snow. Either way, you wisely choose a different route.

If you roll odd a total of five times, the ice gives out and you fall into the water. Ending the exam.

Second dice represents distance

To successfully pass this exam, you need to take at least twenty-five steps to reach the other side.
What you roll for the second die is the amount of steps you take.

Keep rolling until you either pass or fail.

Nodding her head in understanding, Gene turned to face the pool and gulped. It was probably best that she hadn't worn anything warm - if she fell through she'd be that much more soaked, thanks to not being able to phase it off. She almost considered getting down to her skivvies but...not in front of someone. Another small gulp, and she stepped out onto the ice.

She didn't find anything wrong immediately, completely unaware that there was ice cracking beneath her. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other...

Gritting her teeth as she took another step and felt something odd... like a small shift, like the ice underneath was getting ready to separate and let her fall into the frigid water.

She took note and took a step to the left, before making another few tentative steps forward.

So far, so good.

Gene paused for a few moments, not at all having grasped the idea that she could no longer hover in place, to consider her next few steps. Should she zigzag? What if she just made a beeline to the other end, at a sprint? It would be great to have Frost around to help, but she had to do some things on her own.

A calming breath, and she took a step forward. The ice cracked, but fell on deaf ears.

The doppelganger ghoul took a few more steps, before hearing a small crack. Her mind immediately jumped to floating, but the lock down slammed reality back into her face. What now? What now?

Run.

Run she did, sprinting quickly from her place to a good distance away, eyes darting around to where she should head next.

A short and tension filled step to the left, which resulted in another shifting of the ice. A step forward, then, and Gene was considering her next move.

So far she hadn't plunged in...maybe she should stick to the zigzag methodology.

A few more steps in a diagonal direction, and Gene didn't notice anything. That was good...yes?

No, because the ice was cracking closer and closer to her, with the ghoul completely unaware of the looming danger.

The ice was nearly cracking on her heels now, as she changed direction and started walking to the right. She was so close...just a few more steps and she would be there.

What she didn't realize was every time she pivoted, the applied pressure would crack the ice more and more. If she continued oblivious, the ghoul was done for.

Another pivot, and she heard the crack. Eyes went wide with alarm and she bolted a few paces forward, managing to evade the still expanding border between the ice islands.

Just a few more steps...

Just as Gene took a step to get off the iced over pool, the ice broke around her and separated beneath her legs. She was forced into a position that would have been a comical version of the splits if she weren't about to plunge into freezing water.

"Mister Avery!" She called out, more than a little frantic. Surely he'd seen how she was just about to get out of the pool?

He would at least get her out of the pool if she fell in...right?

Avery watched, silently and patiently as Gene slowly progressed across the ice. For her first attempt she wasn't half bad. In fact, she was almost there. Just a little further and--

CRACK

The ice split. However the ghost ghoul had a chance. If she jumped now, she could make it. However the ice is breaking and quickly. Not to mention it is now slick from the water sloshing up onto the ice.

Because she rolled enough steps AND a fail roll AT THE SAME TIME. ( gawd Car, making my life difficult 8U jkjk ) Gene will have to roll a 100 sided die to determine whether or not she makes it.
If she rolls 50+ she makes it out. 49- and she falls into the pool.
Its a 50/50 chance. Good luck!
