Scripture Twisting:
Terms: Hermeneutics: The science and art of interpreting Scripture in which principles, set forth and agreed upon by orthodox Christians everywhere, form the necessary guidelines for all biblical interpretation. Scripture Twisting: unacceptable methods of biblical interpretation.
Ok, so we are all guilty of incorrect hermeneutics. So, I think it's important to clarify the distinction between occasional misinterpretations and unacceptable methods (scripture twisting). We have all been guilty of the former at one time or another, but no one should be guilty of the latter.
There are 20 forms of Scripture Twisting, which cults use to interpret Scripture: AVOID THESE!!!
Inaccurate Quotation - omitting words that are in a text or inserting words that are not.
Twisted Translation - translating incorrectly to suit particular beliefs
The Biblical Hook - introducing falsehood by quoting a Scripture verse to get the attention of the listener.
Ignoring the Immediate Context - Quoting text of Scripture without regard for context
Collapsing Contexts - treating two unrelated passages as if they belong together
Overspecification - reading into the text a meaning far more specific than the text actually confirms
Word Play - interpreting by wrongly giving significance to a translated word or phrase
Figurative Fallacy - mistaking literal language for figurative or vice-versa
Speculative Readings of Predictive Prophecy - interpreting predictive prophecy with unsound methods
Saying, but not Citing - claiming biblical support without siting texts
Selective Citing - using a few texts to make sweeping statements
Inadequate Evidence - making hasty generalizations on insufficient evidence
Confused Definition - redefining a common biblical or theological word
Ignoring Alternate Explanations - failing to consider other interpretations
The Obvious Fallacy - presenting questionable views as if they were clear
Virtue by Association - associating unorthodox views with the Bible, Bible characters and well-known Christians
Esoteric Interpretation - viewing the Bible as a book of secret hidden meanings that can only be spiritually discerned.
Supplementing Biblical Authority - adding to, or replacing the Bible's teaching with new revelations. (new prophecies, new books, etc.)
Rejecting Biblical Authority - denying the authority of the Bible on the basis of unbelieving presuppositions
World-View Confusion - failing to interpret the Bible within the broad cultural and historical framework of the book itself.
Disclaimer: I do not claim personal perfection in these regards
