Depends on the type of games you play. If you mean Sony-Nintendo-Microsoft, look at the system and the main genre(s) for it. For example, the Wii is family-oriented, with a smattering of everything else. PlayStation is more about RPGs. XBOX is about shooter games, with some group orientation where the Kinect is involved.
Not sure of say, the older consoles that are not part of the chain. (Such as the NES and SNES and the GameCube, or the Atari game console), but that is the basic overview for the main three.

You can't go wrong with a Dreamcast. If you want something more modern though, a gaming PC would be a good choice.
