The Ruined World
Prequel to The Perfect World

It is the year 2046, and society has thrived to become what would be dubbed a utopia. Thanks to GAOSA, which was implemented nearly 14 years ago, crime is essentially nonexistent. However, fundamentally larger issues are rotting out society at its core; resources are running dry, the population is too large, pollution is choking the life out of the earth, evolution is causing the new generation to be born sickly and weak in comparison. The people are blissfully ignorant. Only the system knows how these problems could be solved, and what it must do to better humanity's future...

((Please note: This is a 1x1 RP between Okami Ameras and myself. If you wish to join a part of this RP trilogy, take a look at The New World))

Username: Hiddochi wolf
Name: Layla Azerean
Age: 6
Personality: Quiet, withdrawn, highly intelligent for her age, perceptive, protective over her brother.
Bio: Layla was born and raised in the city, like billions of others; practically the entire continent of North America was industrialized. Both she and her brother were among the new generation of white-haired children -- a genetic flaw that differentiated them from everyone else. They were smaller and sicklier than their peers, garnering the ridicule of adults and other children alike. Because of this, Layla was not one to seek friendship or open up to others; they would only bring her harm.

Username: Hiddochi wolf
Name: Taeo Azerean
Age: 5
Personality: Curious, eager to experiment, genius-level intelligence, critical of others, self-important.
Bio: Taeo was born just a year after Layla, yet he already far surpasses her in school. Physically weak, Taeo's natural gift all lies in his brain. Being a part of the white-haired minority, he and his sister both face a great deal of dissent. His only friend is his robotic nanny at home.
Other info: Taeo's immune system isn't as strong as it should be, so he'll sometimes be seen wearing a facial mask to avoid illness. A common cold could leave him bedridden for weeks.
Appearance:

Username: Hiddochi wolf
Name: Aerilo Cedora
Age: Appears about 20
Personality: Insightful, kind, gentle, wise, peaceful.
Bio: Not much is known about Aerilo; he keeps his personal life under lock and key. He's a walking mystery, somehow different from the masses around him. He seems to study theology, based on the large volumes he lugs around on a regular basis, and the occasional visits he pays to varying religious institutes.

Username: Hiddochi wolf
Name: Devon Silviare
Age: 7
Personality: Upbeat, fun-loving, a frequent trouble maker, daredevil, easily makes new friends.
Bio: Devon has a reputation as the class clown. He moved to this city not that long ago; his parents move around a lot due to his father's job as a technician -- they go wherever machines need repair work. Devon just tries to make the best of his time, regardless of where he would be whisked away to next.
Other info: His eyes are brown/amber.

Username: Okami Ameras
Name: Astrid Glenn
Age: 5

((Since we don't have to wait for anyone else, I'm just going to start...))

The shrill alarm sung out from Layla's bedside table, but she was already awake. Her small hand passed over the device's smooth surface, pressing the alarm's off button with the precision of a daily routine. She sat up on the edge of her bed, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. Aside from the muffled sounds of Taeo and the household robot in the next room over, all was silent. Their parents were both already at work, as usual. She knew their robot better than she did her own mother and father.
Layla got dressed and shuffled out into the hallway, met by Ami, their mechanical nanny. It was the least frightening domestic model currently on the market; roughly human-sized, it took on the semblance of a young woman with short brown hair and cheerfully orange eyes. Its artificial skin was too stiff to be believable, and every movement was just a bit too quick and jittery. When it spoke, its words were always slightly out-of-synch with its mouth's motions. But it was deemed "good enough" by the industry's standards, and according to numerous studies, it was four times safer than leaving your children in the care of a human babysitter. Nevertheless, Layla had been terrified of it when she was younger. It still unnerved her to this day.
"Good morning, Layla. I have prepared breakfast for you and Taeo -- it is on the dining room table," Ami chimed at the girl. Every time it said one of their names, its tone changed as if it were pasting a new word into a prerecorded message.
"T-thank you, Ami," The girl responded, quickly descending the stairs and heading down another hallway toward the dining room. This apartment was very large; a bit too large, Layla thought, because some of the rooms were completely empty, and it was basically just her and her brother living there anyway. Such was the consumerist mindset -- bigger is better, buy big things with money you don't yet have.
Breakfast was eaten in silence. Taeo was visibly pondering something as he rearranged the eggs and bacon on his plate, but Layla knew not to ask him about it. When disturbed, his temper really flared up.
Ami walked into the dining room bearing both of their backpacks, one on each shoulder, "Children, it is time to go."
Layla carried her plate out to the kitchen sink, then followed after the robot and boy. Taeo left his on the table. They stepped outside into the enormous city.
The instant the front door opened, it was like an ocean of sound and activity cascaded over them, drowning out all else. The sidewalks were all congested with thousands of people, yet the streets were hardly any better; bright, colorful lights from advertisements beckoned for customers' attention from all sides; music blared from storefronts and passing cars; the air was heavy with smog and industrial ash. The civilians all wore an expression of tired determination: they were exhausted, but they wanted money and other material possessions more. This idea was even more prominent lately, as it was rapidly approaching Christmas.
Ami's hand was firmly clutched onto Layla's shoulder as the robot navigated both children through the crowd. She was grateful for the machine's aid -- Layla would have been swept away in an instant otherwise, like a salmon trying to swim upstream that failed and succumbed to the currents. Everywhere she turned, she was surrounded by business suits and fatigued faces.
It was a relief when they reached school property, as nowhere near as many people occupied this space. Ami released its grip on both kids. Layla noticed for the first time that it was actually cold outside, and ashy snowflakes were drifting down from between the hulking skyscrapers. She collected her backpack from the robot, then proceeded up the school's front stairs. She held out her hand, catching an anemic, grey little snowflake in her palm for the second before it melted, "Do you think snow was really different a long time ago? I've heard that it was white, and there was lots of it, but I don't believe it..."
Taeo scoffed at his sister's wonderment, "Of course it was. The earth wasn't always so dirty. The climate has changed, messing up the weather patterns. I thought that was common knowledge, but I guess we can't all be smart."
His comment stung like a slap to the face. Layla blinked away the tears building up in her eyes as she watched him enter the school, her mind racing with comebacks too late to say. She entered a moment later, trudging her way down the main hallway. In a matter of a few minutes, she had already had many wads of paper chucked at her. The few adults who escorted their children to their classroom gave her dirty looks, and the kids themselves taunted and stuck their tongues out in mockery. All of this misery was because of her hair color.
Layla stepped into class, claiming a seat toward the back like the other white-haired kids. They were all prey to the cruelty and prejudice of the 'normal' kids, most of them too weak to do anything about it. Half of them appeared eternally ill, some could barely sit up straight. The rest, like Layla, were perfectly healthy.
The bell rang. The teacher, a tired-looking young man, started up the holographic board at the front of the classroom. Geometric shapes in varying colors projected themselves in 3D amongst the students. Some of the 'normal' students squinted or complained of headaches due to the hologram, yet none of the white-haired kids suffered these ailments. That was perhaps their only advantage.
Layla sighed, slouching back in her seat. She already knew everything about the subject being taught. She carefully withdrew her personal computer from her backpack, setting the paper-thin device in her lap. The holographic screen floated just above the glassy surface, half of which displayed a keyboard. The girl slowly typed out 'snow,' then paged through the many images with interest. The snow really was white at one time, just like her hair.

BWAA!

I leapt out of the bed as a thumping, blaring noise with the sound of thunder came from my bedside table. The noise quickly registered as music, which I started to flow and dance too. A step here, a twist of the hip there-- I flowed like water as I grooved across the shag carpet of my floor. I spun on one leg before slamming my other palm to the ground with a particularly hard beat.

I continued to dance until the music suddenly shut off.

Ahem.

My older sister stood there, staring at me hard with jealousy in her intelligent emerald eyes. I stopped and looked down.

Sissy... Why must you show off? She looked like she was about to cry.

Isabella... It's what I do. I said, exasperated. How was I supposed to explain? I don't let it... I don't let.... this... stop me. I pulled at a lock of white hair that had fallen infront of my face.

She closed her eyes and shook her head. You say it like it's so EASY! And I'm... I'm so WEAK! She looked down as where she sat on the bed and started to sob.

I stared at her and crossed my arms, looking stern. Isabella. It is unfair for you to to ask me to stop doing what I do because you can't do it.

She looked up at me, tears in her eyes. You're like... the only one of us who can do anything... you know that, right?

I frowned. You have no idea, Isabella. You have no idea.

Then I heard more pounding music start up downstairs. It sounded like my dad had gotten distracted from making breakfast.

I pulled Isabella's wheelchair out from the closet. Comeon sissy. Let's go get some food.

Down a hallway and and one elevator later, I came across my father, who was glued to a computer in the kitchen. He was munching on a strip of bacon.

Daddy! I ran out from behind Isabella's wheelchair and hugged his leg.

How are ya, kiddo? He said with a grin.

Food?

My father was a tall man with dirty blonde hair and sky blue eyes. He was skinny with a thick cut of five o'clock shadow. He wore a grey sweatshirt and jeans with socks on his feet. He was an unusual man-- a dreamer-- and in this world of work hard to get more stuff, he worked hard yes, but he spent some time with his children and his wife. Our little family was unusual... a family that still valued family over money and stuff.

Groggily my mother entered the room, with her longish brown hair, yawning. She wore a bright pink robe.

I second that notion.

My father grinned before gesturing to a whole breakfast of eggs, toast, bacon and mixed fruit.

Isabella and my cheers echoed about the house.

~~~
I looked up at the steps of our new school as dad's flying car flew off.
This was a new school. I kinda... got in trouble and got suspended from my last one. Isabella didn't want to be left alone without me, so she requested to be transferred to this new school with me.
The steps would be... tricky. Isabella looked to me as I stepped behind her and started pushing.
Soon we reached the steps. I studied them for a moment, before turning to my sister and sliding my arms under her. I lifted her up with a grunt before awkwardly walking up the steps. I felt her weak grip on me, as once or twice I swayed too much for her liking and she gave a yelp of fear.
I set her down at the top of the steps and then walked down them to grab her wheelchair. I folded it and brought it up the steps and unfolded it again, before scooping her up and putting her back into the wheelchair.
I then pushed her inside.
Isabella looked uncertainly at the other children as I pushed her down the hall. One of them chucked a paper wad. She winced as she braced for an impact, but I leaned forward and snatched the paper out of the air, before throwing it back at the kid. The paper hit him right in the eye, and he winced as he held his hand over his eye in shock at the force I had used. I could see he was about to start wailing.
I stepped out from behind Isabella and stepped forward. No adults were looking, but other children were watching, they had all stopped in mid throw of their own wadded-up ammunition. I opened my mouth, showing my teeth in a jagged, sharp toothed smile, and I ran my tongue over them as if I was thinking of biting him.
The boy let out a quiet eep! The others stepped back.
I thought so. I smiled.
Isabella pulled out the paper telling us both where to go for our classes. I gripped the handles of the wheelchair and took us there.
No paper wads thrown at us in the hall the entire way there.
I pushed her into a classroom with a tired looking teacher who was younger then most. He eyed me before I stepped up and offered him the paper. He took it, nodded, before I looked around at the kids. I saw two seats near the back and pushed Isabella's chair down the row.
I pulled out the chair of the desk and pushed her behind it, before sitting down at the chair next to it. I noticed a white haired girl next to me with a screen in her lap showing a snowy scene. I smiled quietly as I turned to look at the holographic image being projected at my desk. I studied it when I heard the sound of another ball of paper being thrown. I glanced up. It was being sent towards the girl sitting next to me. I watched it before leaning forward and snatching it out of the air and sending it back at the kid who threw it. The boy wasn't expecting a rather forceful ball of paper to hit him in the back of the head-- which nearly caused his head to knock into the desk infront of him.
He looked up and around, confused and upset. I was back to studying my 3D display intently. Isabella hadn't looked up from her own.
And no one, not even the teacher, had noticed.
