Even though it's normally just baby kindergarten stuff, I JUST LOVE SCIENCE. The unit we're about to start ends right after Halloween so we're going to open up a pumpkin (because we're learning about fruits and parts of plants).

But I'm even more excited about the idea of doing science for older kids. Oh my god kindergarten content is so boring and what's getting me through the year so far is thinking about moving up to 3rd or 4th grade next year.

The content may be boring but watching their little eyes light up because you are suddenly the coolest teacher in the world, is priceless.

I know it's not kindy but close enough... I remember first grade and our teacher showing us how to make butter. We all had a chance to shake the jar and when finished, we were each given a roll and were allowed to butter our bread with it. It was fabulous.

Do something with those pumpkin seeds. Maybe take another one the night before and roast/salt the seeds, and share them for eating. Take the opportunity to plant something easy so they understand what seeds do. And explain the multiple uses for seeds.

Then get to making jack o lanterns or something!

That's so cool. (:
What if you compared it to other fruits/gourds?
Crack open a squash or cut an apple or something.
Let them find the similarities and differences.

I remember when I was little not believing my teacher that there was a star in an apple.

It's the arrangement of the seeds.

We'll be doing other things with seeds! I think we're going to try and sprout some, and maybe plant them to see them grow. I don't know if we'll be doing anything else with the pumpkin, though before we cut it open I think we might try and guess whether it would sink or float in water.

But yeah some of the stuff we learn at this age is like magic, lol. I remember making ice cream, and I'm pretty sure we did experiments with seeds too.
