User Image"Nggghhh," the pink and blue fae reached up to feel her aching forehead. Dirt. Her hand was dirty, and she just spread it all over her head. Why so much dirt? She opened her eyes. She tried opening them again thinking maybe she didn't open them the first time. Nope, it was that dark, where ever she was. She sat up, felt more of the ground and dirt. Looking around would be pointless.

"Hello? Is anyone there?"

She prayed to the Guardians someone was there and they knew what was going on. The panic she was feeling overtook her thoughts, and she forgot about her pack with a little lantern in it. She pulled her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around herself. "Hello?" she called out again.

Something stirring.

Jarek had woken in darkness, unsure where he was or what had happened to him. Last he remembered was hiking through the jungle, stopping to look at a particularly beautiful flower, then...trees...and darkness, waking up here. Wherever 'here' was.

He'd moved slowly, trying to sit up, checking himself for injuries, then reaching out around him to try and find out what might be nearby before he started trying to get up and wander around blindly. That's when he'd heard something stirring and had fallen still. After all the warnings from the fairies in the jungle, his imagination was running wild as to what sort of creature could be here in the dark with him...

"Hello? Is anyone there?"

...or it could be another Pae'il from the hiking group. The female's voice, though not personally familiar, was enough to allow him to relax and release a breath he'd been holding. As she called out a second time, he thought he could tell she was fairly close by, so he answered in a quiet voice, hoping not to startle her. "Hey...are you okay? Are you from the hiking group too?" It seemed a casual enough question; an answer that also served to try and keep the other calm with the guise of normal conversation. This situation seemed anything but normal at the moment.

Moving slowly and awkwardly in the darkness, Jarek tried to shuffle closer to the other voice. Even if he were trying to stay calm, the primal fear of the darkness and unknown crept into one's thoughts unbidden, and the natural inclination was to reach out in order not to feel alone. Perhaps he reached a little too far and misjudged the distance. His hand brushed against something in the dark and he immediately withdrew. "Err, sorry. Can't really see," he said, keeping his hands on the floor now, sitting close. The floor was dusty, covered in dirt and who knew what else, and he could feel the dust clinging to his skin, already sticky from the humidity.

How pleasant.

Noting that no one else had answered the female voice's calls, he frowned, resting on his knees. "I don't hear anyone else. Hard to say for sure without being able to see though..." Wait...didn't they have something in their packs? He started to reach out again, then paused, hesitantly asking, "Err...I don't suppose you've stumbled across my pack in the dark, have you?" His awkward, sheepish grin would go unseen in the darkness, but perhaps not unheard.

A voice! "Hello!" Joi called out just before a hand brushed her shoulder. It was startling as she wasn't expecting anything to touch her in the dark. She let out a scream, but it wasn't blood curdling or anything, just a short, startled scream. She quickly scuttled sideways incase it was something unpleasant that touched her.

Maybe the voice can see?

Before she could ask, he spoke again, answering her question.

"Where are we? Did the fairies lose us?" She was terrified to give up her fetal position to look around in the dark. She didn't know what was out there just waiting to pounce. His pack? Why would he care about his--- She remembered they had survival equipment in their packs. How could I forget about that? She would have slapped her forehead if not for the dark, and how dirty she knew it was.

"I haven't looked," she admitted, slowly letting go of her knees. "I - I can try to help - find it." she stuttered a bit, scared. She was wondering where her pack might have gone as well, the more she thought about it. It wasn't on her back, where she'd last had it.

Pawing around on the dirty floor, she was making disgusted faces, grateful no one could see her. The dirt was not what she was used to. Felt more like years of dust and decay and it was just very unpleasant. Her hand hit something soft and she froze. Could be a pack, could be a - corpse. "Are you still there. I think I found something," she squeaked, speaking rapidly all in one breath. Joi's imagination was going wild in the dark.

The scream, while short, had been equally as startling as the accidental contact in the darkness. Jarek had winced, recoiling immediately with a stammered 'Sorry!' and some moderate mental flailing in addition to the physical. While he was still confused and trying to get a grip on the situation, it sounded like the other had been awake long enough for panic to start taking hold. Honestly, he had the urge to panic as well, but if they both panicked, then they weren't going to get anywhere. Taking a few deep breaths to try and calm himself, he answered with all the reassurance he could muster, "I don't really know where the fairies went. But, let's see if we can find some sort of light, figure out where we are, then see where the others are."

He listened to gauge which direction she had moved in and moved off in the opposite, hands hovering low over the dirty floor in search of either of their packs. Hopefully, they weren't too far and they'd be able to find them in the dark. He hadn't had much luck and was starting to grow frustrated when he heard a reply from nearby, the words a little too quick, but he understood. "Yes, I'm still here. Just a moment, let me make my way over to you. Let's keep talking, so no more accidental collisions in the dark, okay?" He tried to smile and keep her talking as he crawled across the dusty floor in her direction. When he felt he was getting near, he slowed, proceeding much more carefully this time.

"Alright...let's see what we have here," he murmured, seeking out the non-Pae soft object. His fingertips brushed something in the dark, something that felt like canvas. Oh Guardians, please, he thought, hands deftly skimming over the object before trying to open it. Definitely not the easiest task in the dark, but after some fumbling, he managed to open it and start sifting through the unseen objects within. He thought he remembered...ah ha! He found what certainly felt like the lantern at least, then the matches were next. More fumbling, attempted strikes, one spark burning a finger (followed by a grumbled 'ouch'), then he finally got a match to light successfully. He sheltered the tiny flame, protecting it until he could light the lantern in turn. The soft glowing orb of light was the most welcome sight he could remember in a long time.

"There we go," he murmured with a smile, already feeling himself relax a few degrees just with the appearance of the light. He relaxed a bit more so when he laid eyes on his new companion; a fellow Fae, pretty, if exceedingly nervous. Perhaps the light would help her as it had him. "Much better, right?" He sat back on his knees, the lantern on the floor between them. The sphere of light lit them in a golden glow, and though it dimmed the further one looked, he could at least see some of the room where they now sat. While he didn't see any other Pae'il in the room with them, one figure did catch his attention over the female Fae's shoulder. A large statue of a Fae, beautiful and regal in appearance, holding a customary staff, but wearing a crown instead of the circlet that most wore. "Oh...wow..." Jarek murmured breathlessly in awe, staring.

The panic Joi was feeling lowered a few notches when she saw the light. Thank the Guardians. She took a look at the fellow that was trapped in the dark with her, and a little squeak escaped her mouth. She quickly covered her mouth with both hands, and just as quickly regretted it once she remembered where they'd been. "Uhm, yeah, much better. Where are we?"

She followed his glance because he seemed very enthralled with something. The statue of a regal fae towered over them. Her mind raced as she tried to recall if she'd read anything related to this type of statue, but there was so little fae history known, she didn't know a thing.

Still a little uneasy and not fully trusting the situation, she attempted to stand up. Her legs wobbled, but she was soon sturdy and a bit more composed. The light didn't go far, but it did allow her to walk towards the statue. Maybe there would be some placard or something explaining what it is. She looked at the feet of the statue, so perfect. Whoever modeled for this must have been beautiful.

"It's a fountain!" she squealed, delighted at her discovery. She noticed the spigots and drain hole, and that the floor around the statue was covered in little decorative tiles, rather than the stone floor of the rest of the room. She turned, momentarily joyful for her forensic discovery, but was quickly humbled when she looked at the face of the male faerie staring at the statue in the dark. Oh yeah... trapped in an unknown place with ... what is his name?

"I'm Joi," she says as she returns to the safety of the lit area around the lamp facing the fae she didn't know. Her hand was extended as a gesture of greeting, also in case he wanted help in standing.

Squeaky little thing, wasn't she? If not distracted by the fact that he had no idea where he was, Jarek might have thought it cute. He silently raised an eyebrow at her reaction instead, then shook his head. "No idea, unfortunately. I don't think I know much more than you."

Or perhaps less than she. He remained where he was as she started to explore, wincing slightly as she squealed yet again at her discovery. He really thought he'd have gotten used to that by now. Or would soon. Hopefully.

As attention had returned to him, he stared at the offered hand for a moment, then reached to take it. "Jarek; a pleasure to meet you," he added, mostly standing on his own, though he held her hand long enough to check his balance before giving it a gentle shake in greeting and releasing it. He bent to pick up the lantern, holding it high to spread the meager light as much as possible. "A fountain, you say? Interesting...but doesn't look like anyone's used it in a long time." Staring up at the gorgeous figure, he added, "Pretty fancy decoration for just a fountain. Wonder if it was special for some reason?"

The fountain and statue were fascinating, but he wasn't sure it should be their primary concern. He had his pack at his feet, but what about hers? Hadn't everyone on the trek had a pack of their own? Tearing his attention away from the towering statue, he started looking around the small area of floor that was illuminated by the lantern. He'd feel a bit better if they at least found their belongings, then they could find out where they were. And how to get out, hopefully. Then solve the overhanging mystery of how they got to wherever they were and what had happened. After a moment of seeing little but stone floor, dust, and a few bugs skittering from the light, he thought perhaps he'd better be sure. "Err...you had a pack as well, didn't you?"

Joi looked at the statue a few moments with the dim light. It was hard not to, as the fae was very beautiful. She glanced around the room once her focus on the statue was broken. "My pack? Oh yeah!" Why was that statue so mesmerizing?

The situation was scary, yes. But the adventurous spirit she'd inherited from her mother was starting to win out over fear and survival. Not necessarily a good thing. She became more and more preoccupied looking at all the little things she could see with the little light. There were little conduits come from either side of the fountain's base to surround the room. Small little statues of what looked like mellons perched in various spots along the small channels. It was while staring at one mellon in particular, that looked oddly familiar that she noticed something hanging from the little fairy's outstretched hands. It was very eerie, and Joi hesitated to approach. "I...I think I found it."

She pointed to the statue of the fairy that looked as though gladly holding the pack out for the strangers. She didn't trust that it was entirely just a statue, but it did look like the rest of the statues. That is, if those were statues too.

Jarek had crouched down to peer at a carving on the floor when he heard the young woman's voice call out that she'd found it. Or thought she'd found it, at least. Why did she sound so hesitant? The male Fae stood, brushing off his knees and moved to see what it was she'd found and stopped, staring.

"Are those...Mellons? Interesting choices for statue subjects..." he muttered, leaning in and peering at one closely. First, the beautiful Faerie statue, now all these little Mellons...what did it all mean? What sort of place was this? His curiosity over things long forgotten was being stirred, though it was still battling with the common sense to figure out more about where they were and how they got here, as well as how to get out again, before being curious about more frivolous things.

He fixed his gaze on the statue that seemed to be offering Joi her pack back. He glanced to the fellow Fae, then to the statue again, noting her hesitation. Finally, he stepped forward. "Here, let me get that for you," he offered without explaining why. Perhaps he was just being a gentleman, right? He hadn't noticed the way she kept looking sideways at the statues oddly. Course, it was a little odd the way the statue seemed to have caught her bag. Coincidence, surely. Without further hesitation, he reached to take the pack from the Mellon statue.

The little mellon "statue" immediately sprung up, pleased to have helped the pair. At least, that's what Joi was going to assume by the gleeful look on his face. Surely it wasn't glee over this situation...

Still, when it seemed to spring to life, it was enough to illicit an awful screech from the Fae that reverberated off the stone walls until a loud rumble answered back. Joi clasped her hands quickly to her mouth. Her eyes looked to her companion and she felt immediate remorse for her crass reaction.

It wasn't bad, that was a normal reaction. Anyone would have squealed. Right?

"I'msosorry!" She looked around to see if the source of the rumble was perhaps visible, praying to the Guardians it wouldn't be. She'd likely wet herself if it was and she was just not prepared to be completely undignified in front of a handsome stranger.

So maybe this wasn't just an adventure. Maybe those fairies weren't friends and were playing games with them. Joi quickly moved to Jarek's side, keeping her eyes on the other statues. They'd spring to life at any second, she knew it. "We should find a way out of here," she said as she thought she saw another one move. She really hoped it was just her mind playing tricks on her because that other didn't look quite as happy to see them.

A flicker from the light of their lanterns caused shadows to dance along the stone faces of all the statues, fairy and fae alike. Joi's heart practically lept out of her chest and she couldn't stand to be in that room anymore. It had to be less terrifying not in this room, so she grabbed Jarek's hand and started towards the dark portal that she assumed was the exit. "We really should get out of here."

Several things happened at once. The mellon seemed to spring to life, the pack started to drop, and Joi screamed. The shriek prompted Jarek to clamp his fist around the strap of the falling pack. He immediately turned to Joi, worried that she'd been hurt. Apparently, she'd just been startled. That was a relief, but it was less so when he turned back and the mysterious mellon 'statue' seemed to have simply vanished into thin air.

Where did...?

Worry creased his brow and he concentrated on keeping the remaining statues in sight. He hadn't missed the ominous rumble either, but could only deal with so many strange possible threats at once. Lantern in one hand, Joi's pack in the other, he slung the first pack over one shoulder to free up his hand to grab his own from the floor. Joi remained at his back while he kept his eyes on the statues, now seeming more menacing than curious in the flickering light of the lantern. Both packs over his shoulder, he felt Joi at his side just before she took his hand. He was grateful for the gesture, if only so he'd be able to keep track of where Joi was while keeping his eyes on the statues. Though, the contact was reassuring and may have also kept them both calmer as well. While not as jumpy as the female Fae, he was far from the adventurous type either. At her statement, he nodded, struggling to keep his tone even and at least sounding calm as he started to back away with her. Who knew what was listening? What if it could hear panic in their voices? What if they could smell fear?

"I think that's a very good idea. Lead the way, Joi."

Willing his imagination to stop running away with crazy nightmarish ideas, Jarek slowly followed Joi's lead towards the dark portal and prayed it would prove to be an exit from this trap.
