I like the ornate ones better.
It's next to impossible to get past level 7 without buying cheats tho'... :C

So the items you get from trick or treating at the stores are those black/orange/purple ones.
There are also the "ornate" items that are the exact same but in black/red/white.
For example,
Jack's 2k13 Ornate Ribbon compared to
Jack's 2k13 Ribbon.
You get the ornate ones by playing
Switchem, which you can find on the event page (after you pick a team and a class)
The game is basically Bejeweled or Candy Crush or whatever matching game is the latest trend right now.
But like I said, it gets harder as you go along and I get the impression that you have to spend GC to get power ups.
