Late Summer/Early Autumn
Early night
Day 2 to Day 3

“They ambushed us,” Nefretiri allowed about the moon wolves being formidable against her cats. The little goddess sighed at the decision she had to make and called two of her own children.

One of the kids Eydis called was swift like a hawk while this Cotiso…this Cotiso reminded Nefretiri of one of those peacocks brought over by the Phoenicians some 2000 years ago. His movements brought to mind one of those birds slowly walking with his feathers on display as all the others fawned over him. Yes… she would call him Peacock. While beautiful, peacocks still charged at the unsuspecting. He gave an infectious smile before he hurried off. Definitely Peacock.

They spent most of the rest of the night talking about the moon wolves. They gave vivid descriptions of their leaders and what they do. It sounded to her that these moon wolves might actually sniff each other’s butts. They spoke a lot and told almost nothing at all. Their grudges, waring history, didn't tell Nefretiri much except their relationship was delicate and could shift to hostile very easily.

Eydis was in her own little world phasing in and out of reality; forgetting to be their interpreter at times and, unbeknownst to them, downright summarizing some of the details her children gave that she really shouldn’t have shortened. Their information was so vague that they didn’t tell her what was proper to wear or how to conduct herself save from the inferences of what was said. By the start of the next night Nefretiri had only been instructed to “dress in clothing most suitable to display your higher status.” So, look regal and powerful she took it as.

She had a sheer kalasiris gown of light byssus silk that slept in the dark and was golden in the light tied in place under her breasts. Only…instead of wrapped and more form fitting, it was slit on one side so she could easily kick. Over that she wore a mostly blue and blue green beadnet dress made of gold, turquoise, and lapis lazuli beads. Attached to the back of the collar and draping down was a piece of silk from the Seres (1) that the Greeks, including that very last and immortalized final queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt (Cleopatra), and now Romans coveted. On her arms were golden bangles. Through her dress, henna designs could be seen painted on her skin. She thickly painted black kohl under her eyes and ended it in the point to make them appear more cat like. Everything was lavish from her head down to the simple sandals.

She then included an ornate knife that had silver in the blade with an Eye of Ra engraved on it. Quite appropriate for subduing the night creatures that hide from the sun. A blade dangerous even to her as she healed slower from silver wounds. Moon wolves weren’t spared the difficult regeneration as they too partially cower from Ra.

Having skipped the bathing so she wouldn’t ruin the scent she left on the card of Azizi, Ta-Mieuw, and possibly Tutankhseneb, she considered some scents her people favored. She decided against it since smell was important to these dogs. Also might overpower their senses. She gave the cats a good rubbing before she stepped outside.

1) Seres= people of silk. This is a term used for the inhabitants of the far-off kingdom of China by the Greeks and Romans. Not long after the conquest of Egypt in 30 BC, regular commerce began between the Romans and Asia, marked by the Roman appetite for silk cloth coming from the Far East, which was then resold to the Romans by the Parthians (ancient Iranians). There was still commerce as silk has been found in Egyptian tombs of 1000 BC. The light byssus silk mentioned before the Chinese silk is actually from a mollusk in the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians mentioned earlier (Peacock) are also thought to be a Central Asian tribe of Iranians.

Evening -- Day 3

Eydís stared at the fabric which draped the Egyptian goddess, transfixed by its flowing nature—its lightness. It looked like water rushing down her onyx skin or-or fog rolling in on the mountains. It was beautiful and rich and luxurious. The precious stones that covered the silk shone in the dim light of the evening. Eydís was sure they would feel smooth were she to touch them.

The childlike vampire’s children were less amused by the revealing clothing. Rescuturme met Cotiso’s eyes over her mistress’ head. A subtle shake of her head told Coti she agreed with him. The foreign matriarch could not wear this to meet with the wolves. It would be seen as an insult to the wolves. A vibrant display of…difference. But…how to phrase such a thing in this delicate situation?

“She can’t wear that, Mistress.” A blunt, deep voice intoned from behind Cotiso. Coti closed his eyes briefly in annoyance. Diegis continued, unaware of Cotiso’s irritation. “The wolves will not take kindly to the directness of it—the sheer disregard for Dacian culture and humanity. She might as well scream that she is a child of the night. We will be stopped before we can even enter the neutral meeting grounds.”

We? You were not invited, Diegis.” Res stated, narrowing her eyes slightly. The vampire did not disagree with Diegis’ assessment though. As insensitive as he was, he was right.
“To add, Mistress, he should not be in attendance either--” Coti added.
“For Bendis’ sake. I should be in attendance. I am the best protection you have.”
“Oh, plea--.” Res started, stopping short when she heard their matriarch humming under her breath.
“Dear ones. This is not the time to squabble like hens. We have company.” There was a reason Eydís maintained her seat of power. A reason she could lead her people. “Diegis, you will not be present. Rescuturme may not have been able to name why but I will tell you now, my love. They will view you as an insult. You have taunted them too many times—a scrap cat to their hounds. No, my dear. You must observe from a distance.” She sighed, moving on, her body swaying as her dream-filled eyes took in Nefretiri. “My children say your (beautiful) outfit is offensive and you will need to change.”
“Mistress,” Res added quietly, guessing at what the matriarch had told the other, “Cotiso has also left clothing in your living quarters.”

“Neh. My children also tell me my outfit is offensive and have left clothing out for me. As a child.” Normally Eydís did not pay mind to fashion or clothing. Another sigh left her lips. If only she could control the night as Bendis. She would make it run faster. She would be done with the meeting with the wolves.

Late Summer/Early Autumn
Evening -- Day 3

The wolves had already moved into place at the neutral meeting grounds. They moved under the cover of the sun—ensuring there was no chance of ambush or night trickery. Mistrust ran deep within the wolves and their heckles raised high even at the thought of the nightwalkers.

And Caecilia stood in the middle of it. Try as her mother might to prevent her attendance at this summit, her father would not be swayed. He was rigid in his decision, set in his ways. Her gifts were too invaluable—her presence as the alpha’s only child too known. It would be an insult for her not to be in attendance. If the alpha did not entrust his pup’s life in a meeting with these blood drinkers, why should the others entrust their own lives? No, she had to come.

Caecilia bounced around the site, learning the scents and committing sights to memory... She was avoiding her mother as well. Tatiana looked like some avenging goddess. Like Kotys(1) protecting her children—thunderous and angry and protective. But she obeyed. Yes, even she could not fight her alpha’s order.

Now there was nothing left but to wait…

(1) Kotys : mother-goddess. Later when she is brought over and adopted in Greece, she becomes similar to Dionysus. A goddess personifying desire. BUT SHE HASN'T BEEN ADOPTED YET.

Had she been human, her cheeks might have reddened with the casual way Jianshen had dismissed her guilt as timidity having just barely heard his utterance. ”So I should expect something in a month, then?” Daphne returned back, just as softly, attempting some lightness in exchange—some jest to match the Chinese vampire’s tone, ”Ah, and Dan. I could never forget you.” She had grabbed two extras when she had been in her room. While they were originally meant for Cian and herself, she did not mind giving them away to the twins, ”And one for Daisy too. So long as Ma Jianshen gives me leave. Will you be offended, sir, if I give the children candy too?” There was a soft teasing tone in her voice.

Jianshen rolled the loli in his mouth a few times before he moved it into his cheek area.  He would have likely given her candy in a month anyways without a word, but now he felt obligated to.  "Sure," he said with his normal tone. He made a sucking and swallowing motion with the lollipop as he considered, eyes smiling even more, next sentence with a kittenish tone. "Husband not protesting this Old Man giving wife gifts."  He pulled out his phone, activated it, and said in his tongue, losing the flirting playfulnesses in his voice for a more monotone dictation, "{schedule reminder on xmonthxday for Daatfunei baak6 sik1 ching4 yan4 jit3 (1).}"

The words 達芙妮白色情人節 (Daphne White Day) appeared in his calendar with a date easily read as one month from then. He seemed satisfied with what it wrote and after considering for a moment, he then gave his device new instructions in which it wrote 為达芙妮買糖果 (Buy candy for Daphne (达芙妮 Daatfunei)) on a relatively empty day about a week before the initial note.  He put it out of sight again once he was done and put down a few more strokes on his painting.  It was one of his favorite things about Limbo, having things programmed to adapt to his speech specifically even when he mixed old with new.

While he had put in the schedule entries, he considered his next words.  If this was merely a matter of offering them three something, she already did it in the correct order for him to not be offended.  He wouldn't have been offended if she did it in the wrong order if she wasn't making a statement out of it.  But she had called A-Dan and Daisy his kids by asking for his permission...or at least acknowledged him as an authority in their life.  This itself wasn't a problem.  The problem would be if he acknowledged them as 'children' to someone else even teasing... "Laoming not offended if Daphne giving the youth candy too."

1) 達芙妮 Daatfunei 白色情人節 White Day I just entered in Daphne in Google translate to see what I would get... be amused  達芙妮 (cantonese: daat fu nei mandarin:dá fú nī (try listening to them in both @@ cantonese daat fu sounds lower while the mandarin da fu is a higher tone) since this isn't really a word when put together here's what individual characters mean with the first one being a verb: (to) communicate lotus girl.

-------------------------------------------------

Daisy's curly locks fell forward hiding her face from Daphne's view as she turned to Dan and mouthed 'behave' when Daphne was trying to recover from an awkward situation and now said she hadn't forgotten them. Dan was annoyed that he still didn't get 'of course you're handsome' even out of guilt from her. Instead received 'I could never forget you' and then 'give the children candy.' They of course were an afterthought, but Daphne was riddled with self guilt so it was excusable this time...

Their cousin wasn't much better. He was shaken, but since the two of them didn't quite know everything that happened they weren't sure who he was most annoyed at. Probably himself if they had to guess. They both wondered if the cat saw anything and if they could understand anything about it from her since they weren’t going to embarrass him by asking. However one thing was clear to them; he was radiating 'don't come near me,' but couldn't easily directly say so even in private. Nearly impossible for him to with a bunch of others around.

He wanted to be left alone and had set up the body language for it, made sure to immerse himself in an activity to have an excuse if he ignored a person when they approached and had given them an excuse to leave him alone, but still hadn't gotten it. It was obvious to the kids for their cousin wasn't quite behaving. Though he did his normal behavior of showing that he appreciated a gift by using it, he was fidgeting more now. He made more of a show than usual to show he enjoyed it after Daphne asked him if she should expect something in a month; twirling it in his mouth, sucking on it between sentences.

They once bought him incense that he used only once and only ever used when they asked him about it. It turned out that though he often had some, he rarely burned it inside... Which they should have realized, but he still said it was thoughtful. He didn't enjoy the smell most of it produced when it burned. He claimed he once did, but hadn't for a long while. Probably when his sense of smell became more keen they realized. Now he was even more particular because there were synthetic compounds and cheaper ingredients in some brands that the kids didn't find pleasant either when it burned.

Ma was staring at them after he said, "Laoming not offended if Daphne giving the youth candy too." He was telling them to hurry up and go get it. You two have legs. To think that he was still trying to be considerate towards them when his nerves were rattled and he could have easily said 'sure' again.

Maybe they'd try to keep her away since Jianshen was being nice to them. Repay kindness with greater kindness and all that. They hopped up and went to Daphne before she fully stood up again. "Thank you Daphne! It's so nice of you to offer us candy too!" Dan and Daisy smiled with their eyes almost closed, dimples out, and showing all their sharp teeth as they smiled at her.

Nefretiri's eyes went a little big at observing the technological marvel. She had thought the ones with the camera and voice recorder were fantastic, but he actually commanded the thing with his voice and in some of his older dialect! Which world is that from?! What other new leap had she missed?

He got zat from Limbo...our world's technology iz not quite zat far. Rosemary informed her.

Do you have one?

...not as advanced in zat function or as complex... his todai help him vith technology.

She hid her thoughts questioning the word todai and pondered if it was like a disciple...or even an heir... she had saw a picture of him with red eyeliner in clothes similar to what he wore when she first saw him with youths of varying age and species around him on his screen. Rosemary broke her thoughts... Mistress Nefretiri...please... allow him to continue staying zer.

The old one changed the subject choosing to not respond to that. And you? What new toy do you have?

Demon killers...

Oh ho? New guns...maybe a blade? Nefretiri wanted to see her gut a creature with them.

...yes...

Now that Nefretiri thought of it. Where are they? I don't even see your handguns on you...

I can draw zem venefer I vant...I don't think now iz appropriate to demonstrate.

Nefretiri made a little wave of her hand and held her hands up in a shrug motion. Tutankhseneb removed the silk capelet, folded, and passed it on to another party member. He then lifted the cloak off himself and draped it over her. She wrapped it around herself creating the effect of a lions mane from the fur around the neck area and sniffed it with a devilish smile. It was still warm. Another member of her group covered Tutankhseneb. They hadn't opposed this cloak she wore last night. She looked at Peacock and then at Io ((Bark!) lit Dog, but Io is derived from the sound a dog makes). "Is this acceptable?" she asked.

Late Summer/Early Autumn
Evening

The night before had been a hunt as most nights had been. This legion of their ranks excelled in their work as hunters. Perhaps in their human lives that is what they would have been—hunters and warriors made into immortal beings. Most of the time, the legion enjoyed the hunt. They enjoyed the power anointed unto them as they slaughtered those who opposed their rule. There were times, however, when one missed the creature comforts of home.

Gods, he missed the bathhouses. It was the one thing he missed, really. He could never feel quite clean here in the Barbarian’s land. Most of the time, the commander didn’t mind it—the dirt, the grime, the blood. Most of the time, in fact, he reveled in it. This evening it was different. This land felt different. The barbarians were filthy—disgusting. Gods, he missed the bathhouses.

Consequently, when Cassian Maximus Cato’s eyes opened, he was in a mood. The vampire rolled his broad shoulders back, and tilted his head side to side as he exited whatever cave he and his men had camped in the night before. His bored eyes took in the light smattering of trees, rocks and things around the face of his camp. His men knew better than to assume his eyes were ever truly bored. No… Cato Maximus was cold, shrewd…and today? Mean. Cassian walked with purpose to his right where the prisoners had been kept. There was only one now. This vampire’s skin was raw from the scars routinely being opened and closed each night. His eyes looked haggard. Cassian’s lips moved into a half-grin.

”Has he spoken today?” Cassian asked the vampire standing guard.

”No, Cato Maximus.” the guard answered, having only woken from his own sleep minutes before.

”What use is a prisoner if they have no information to share? Just another mouth to feed, body to protect…”

”--He has said nothing useful anyway.” the guard added, seemingly chattier now that his superior had deigned to say something more to him. Unfortunately for him, he did not add the right thing. Cassian’s face immediately shifted, a look of cool rage settling in as he appraised his guard.

”I see.” Cassian’s body language became infinitely more aggressive, turning fully toward the guard, ”And do you have much expertise in this area? Do you have many combat years spent deciding what is useful and what is not?” The latter part of the sentence was ground out. The guard trembled. There was a stretch of silence. A small chuckle left Cassian’s lips (it was not joyful), ”I was not asking questions to pleasure myself. Those were questions for you to answer.”

” Cato Maximus…”

”Yes...? I am not known for being exceedingly patient.”

”I…I have no experience. I must beg your forgiv—“

Cassian laughed in full, ”I am even less known for my mercy.” He paused, ”Fortunately for you, you have information I want.” Again, the words were ground out.

And so, the guard spoke of what the prisoner had said—and what he had deemed “not useful.” There the guard had been…not quite wrong; the information was not useful. Not anymore. The information gathered had been found out weeks ago. The guard was also not quite right however. The information could have been useful. Ah, well… Examples still needed to be made though and habits needed to be broken. The guard’s death was violent and gory. And Cassian? Cassian Maximus Cato felt much better.

”A reminder for all—” Cato Maximus called out, “—do not overstep your place in my ranks.” He gestured to the next foot soldier to take guard, ”And you,” he addressed the prisoner, ”I have no use for silence. Your death will come before the rise of the sun if you have nothing useful to add. It will not be swift. It will not be painless. You will suffer for every moment.” Cassian turned to the newly installed guard, ”You will take this filth and…encourage cooperation… then kill the prisoner.”

With orders given, Cassian turned on heel and walked away from the prisoner and the guard. He would go back to the Castra
1 today. Those left behind by the Egyptian vampire—the woman they revered as a goddess—were put down as far as his watchful eye could tell. Those who had attempted to follow their goddess (Cassian rolled his eyes at the thought of that woman being called a goddess) were also killed after any useful information had been taken.

Cassian’s teeth ground, his hands fisted. Gods, he swore to himself, how it angered him that she had gotten away. He had been so very close too…She had only just slipped away. Cassian did not handle failure well and he had well and truly failed here.

---

Some hours later, Cassian stalked back into the Castra—a returning hero. A villain to some. To those in this camp, he hoped a hero. He held no prisoners and one less legionary than he had left with one week prior. As for now…it was best this commander found his commanding officer.

Notes!
1.Castra:
Marching camp. During active campaigns
Roman armies could construct fortified encampments each day as they advanced through non-permissive territory.
While this encampment isn't necessarily one they might be actively marching in,
it is likely they could march in a moment's notice.

Cassian found his commanding officer with ease. More like Marcus Claudius Caecus came at him with a few members of his chosen century that included wolf beast men amongst Cassian's kin on either side of him, moving in step, in a crescent shape with Marcus slightly off center as they approached to suggest he wasn't the alpha.

All of them wore nothing to distinguish one officer from another and exuded the same confident, powerful presence that would make it difficult for an outsider to pinpoint which among them was the true leader of this pack if they doubted the center position. Marcus desired to be able to blend in with at least some of his people so that those who didn't know him could not easily pinpoint him when they saw him. This had been difficult for him to pull off as his presence somehow changed once he became the one to inherit their father's position over them.

Marcus looked at Cassian with a relaxed yet stern expression. Even the shorter ones managed to look down upon Cassian in a like manner. Cassian knew that none of them were really holding him in contempt but were practicing to work as one. Marcus was potentially mad, but he knew he had not done enough for him to detest him. Cassian was the best one for Marcus to test his mettle against when there were no other worthy opponents around to practice with. And he would expect Cassian to tell him if he thought anyone including himself was lacking.

Marcus smiled as Cassian realized a moment too late that Marcus wasn’t as close the center of the formation as he appeared, but closer to one of the edges as two more came into his peripheral view closing the gap of freedom even further.

“Excellent,” said Marcus as he dismissed his guard with a wave apparently satisfied with the results of what he could view of the exercise.

His smile entered his eyes now revealing pleasure at seeing Cassian as well. He stepped forward some and his arms moved to an even more inviting gesture. Once Cassian was close enough, Marcus gave him an osculum (kiss) on both cheeks. "Ah Cassian, I wondered what kept you. You missed enjoying an old one. That aside, I have news of great interest to you brother! The old one we caught told me there’s one more obstacle in this country, but this Little One, she’s currently out of our way (meaning the human army isn’t currently heading that way so they'd be breaking away from them). Soon after learning this, I planned to go in that direction myself, but I realized that the one that got away is heading in the general direction of this Little One. We both know she hasn’t succeeded in acquiring..."

He went silent suddenly and looked towards the distance. Cassian knew that one of his children was reporting to him. Whatever was being said, was of such importance for him to have given it such attention in the middle of speaking to him. "Apologies brother..." He pressed his lips together to stop them from mouthing whatever it was he said back, which Cassian had once informed him he did when he got deep into such interactions.

"She is in the Little One's territory." He made a sighing noise and looked disappointed. "We came so close to wearing her out too…seems like she might have found refuge. I have... concerns if they ally themselves. The Little One is supposedly really ancient as well…which is potentially troublesome to have two of them. The useful idiots I have had in the area and the small group of them I had following her while we tracked her and took care of things will soon know if the Little One believed her. It might be best for me to call off that group until a more skilled one reaches them...what do you think?

"Speaking of useful idiots…"
his body language was more aggressive than it was when he tested an attack formation on Cassian minutes ago to emphasize his displeasure. "I know you can’t afford such stupidity in your ranks, but I am in need of more skilled useful idiots. Tear off their limbs if you want to get your message across but do try to send the next one my way, unless they are a worthless idiot." (he's also now open for that report)

Cassian gave his brother an osculum back. Then, he looked toward his younger brother. In the Castra it was hard to be blind toward Marcus’ leadership. It was palpable. One could not help but notice the deference the soldiers showed his brother. Cassian was relieved. While he could lead, it was neither natural nor was it something he preferred. He was a much better enforcer and much better with leading smaller groups of people. Wide-scale leadership like that of his brother held no appeal.

His attention was soon ripped from his inner world by talk of war and old ones…His attention sharped like the point of a sword when he heard ”but I realized that the one that got away is heading in the general direction of this Little One. We both know she hasn’t succeeded in acquiring…”. Every cell of Cassian’s immortal body stood at his younger brother’s attention. His brother knew how infuriated Cassian had been losing the Egyptian. How frustrated…after months of work. Cass moved his head, side to side, loosening the taut muscles. Now was not the time to give into his anger.

Cassian opened his mouth to ask a question but it seemed his brother was ahead of him.

”We came so close to wearing her out too…seems like she might have found refuge.” It was disappointing, but they knew where she was. Like a wolf pack on the scent of a doe, his brother had tracked her thus far. ”It is nothing.” Cassian murmured to his brother as his brother continued.

”The Little One is supposedly really ancient as well…which is potentially troublesome to have two of them.” This was true as well…did they have surprise on their side again, though or would this be a more even fight? Or…dare he say it, was their host at the disadvantage now? All the same, Cassian had many questions. Why was the new one called Little? Was this night walker as old as the Egyptian or younger?

”Your reasoning is sound, brother. We should pull the group currently tracking her. Unless…” Cassian paused, ”Unless you wish to test the Little One’s battle prowess and also see how cohesive their alliance is. Do your useful idiots know if she is aware they are tracking her?”

With his brother’s change in body language, Cassian had to stop himself from rising to the challenge. He should have seen this coming. He did, in fact. However, it was not something the second-in-command dwelled on. The soldier had needed to die. That was it.

”I thank you for your trust in my leadership.” He bowed his head in respect, sarcasm not marring his tone, ”The soldier was a newer recruit but also one that should have known better. He was a worthless idiot one that could not follow directives.” Cassian paused, ”He also thought he knew better how to filter information from a prisoner than his commanding officer. He thought it best to withhold information.” Cassian sighed before explaining the situation in further detail, bored of it already but knowing, himself, not to withhold information from his own commanding officer. Once he was finished advising his brother of the situation, his shoulders dropped, ”I do not believe it was the wrong decision, but if you do, I will endeavor to adjust my behavior in the future.” Cassian might have been older than his brother, but his brother was still his leader.

The Chorus of Eydís’ generals nodded their approval with Nefretiri’s cloak addition. The old one wore the cloak well. Even hot-headed Diegis had nothing to add. Eydís quickly changed while this occurred. Her outfit became more muted, more mundane…more human. She looked down at her clothes with another sigh. What she had worn before had been acceptable in her eyes. Her generals knew better, she supposed.

Eydís exited her home again, looking to her generals and Nefretiri.
“You and the foreign queen will not be greeted strangely due to your clothing now, mistress.” Cotiso advised with an approving smile. Eydís rolled her eyes. “They approve.” She commented, “Now, if that is settled, we should leave. We do not want to leave our moon friends waiting.”

My gut says both yes and no about testing those two.” Marcus frowned slightly. “If I proceed, they will be used how auxilia used to be viewed and likely all die if I have them test Parvula ((The) Little One) and Qui Fugit (one who fled). On the one hand we might gain useful information, but on the other we might stir something stronger to deal with. If we leave them they have more time to prepare, if we poke them they might prepare faster and stronger.

“I also don’t have control of the wolves in the area. I don’t know what Parvula's familiars are. What I know is the one I just killed wouldn’t have wanted to be in conflict with her…and…”
Cassian knew that this last point wasn’t the issue. They have run into many others who wouldn’t want to encroach upon another. They didn’t usually have issue with that. Marcus looked Cassian in the eyes. “She is either as old as Qui Fugit, or even older.”

"As for Qui Fugit, she knows the larger group of useful idiots are some distance behind her. We (we=Marcus and useful idiots in this context) don't know how accurate her knowledge is of their distance from her. We do not know if she is aware of the scouts closer to her. I have ordered them to back off the moment they feel any sort of unease in hopes that she can't discern individuals teetering the edge of her miasma range. So far she hasn't reacted to them. Ah, what else..."
(No like seriously, tell me if I am leaving something out that Marcus should be saying to Cassian. I will edit the dialogue if you point it out))

He listened to Cassian as he thought of what else to say on the matter. When Cassian was done, Marcus seemed to consider something. Cassian had been rightfully high strung as of late. Marcus had his own stress, but he didn't think he was considered unapproachable like he knew some of the army thought of Cassian...but he hadn't given Cassian those men. “Do your men think you are unapproachable with trivial matters? Are they afraid of being disciplined for troubling you with possibly small unimportant observations when it comes to important matters such as a prisoner or a spy report? What do your men say about you when they think you are not listening?”

Notes

auxilia- non-Roman citizen troops. They used to be considered a lesser troop and received less quality training and gear, but by the time of this roleplay they now received the same training and thus possessed the same combat capability. They often were first sent into combat and thus the first to die.

Parvula (F. form)- actually this would be confusing to hear. Marcus is using a word meaning Little One, also Young or Tender of Years...it could also mean Unimportant (which actually wasn't my goal when I used Little One in English and then looked up the Latin equivalent)... and in the same sentence calling her ancient like the other.

Evening -- Day 3

"Inarguably."

They approached cautiously to where they would meet, but tried to not appear to be too cautious and seem aggressive. The nightwalkers didn't try to hide their presence as they approached; making sure to snap the occasional branch or crunch the leaves as they walked.

Nefretiri wished she had another day or so to hang amongst the locals to pick up on the language better. She was understanding what was being said a little better than the previous night. She now wondered how much pertinent information did Eydis leave out in her translations. She hadn't been doing it maliciously from what Nefretiri could tell, but the Little Goddess’s eyes were often unfocused. She might have relied on her children, who seemed to specialize in things she lacked, to help keep her grounded or at the very least smooth over a potential insult.

As they arrived she took in the surroundings. There were many of them and though the numbers made her nervous, she gave no outward appearance of such. She was actively working at keeping her miasma inward...or at the very least not allow it to travel very far from her to further stir the suspicious creatures.

Day 2 of story time.
Present Day
AKA avoiding the main story
Location: At a property near Barton that is not THoR

Daphne had not expected Jianshen to agree so quickly. Perhaps she should have though. Perhaps that was what friends expected of one another...or perhaps friends did not need to ask--even in jest. It was not that Daphne did not consider Ma Jianshen a friend. No, the vampiress was combating years of friendlessness. Daphne had always been friendly and warm but having friends was a different story. It had long been a goal of hers to have them but she had always blamed the monster within for the lack of bonds. At least until she came here.

Thus, she did not expect Jianshen to not only agree but to (she assumed) put it in his calendar.

A modest "oh please you don't have to" appeared on her tongue but she contained it before it could pass her lips. The fight had left her and in its place a soft earnestness. "Thank you." her response came softly but fiercely, a smile warming to her face despite the rolling emotions of the evening.

"I do not think I get a choice in the matter." Cian chuckled, good natured. "I would not be offended. "

Daphne smiled back to the younger vampires,
"my pleasure. Please enjoy."

As Daphne took a seat, her husband turned to her in mock excitement putting his hand out, "where's my treat?" he teased, knowing full well his wife had given their candy to the two younger vampires. Daphne's eyes widened for a moment in alarm before taking in the teasing smile on his lips and the mirth in his eye. She rolled her eyes, shoving him lightly.
