Hey ladies. I sorta need a little bit of advice but I will make this as short as I possibly can..So I have big plans for my future. I am 17 going on 18 in February. And I am afraid of telling my mother and my aunt what my plans are and what I want to do with my life. (I plan on getting a job and working for a year to save some money to attend culinary school in CA to become a pastry chef) my biggest fear is talking to them about it and they wont support it. California is a long way from Pennsylvania. I really don't want to dissapoint them. I know they want me to pursue a different career and want me to stay home.Yet I just don't want them to hold me back from what I really want to do. Your family may never approve of what your dreams are or not take them seriously...but if it's something you want to do and believe that you can sacrifice everything for and work hard to get what you want then go ahead. Maybe have a backup plan still? I'm not sure what the job market is like for chefs...it might be one of those things that is super competitive and not in high demand, I'm not sure but it seems like something that isn't an 'essential' job like a trade or something you know? (I thought I would pursue art and I now realise I don't have the will for it and not many people value art/design enough to want to pay an artist's bills.) Anyways..maybe see if you can take some extra classes during the year while you are working before school.
My SO's younger sister wants to go to college to be a vet tech and took an extra year of high school taking only two classes (science and math I think, something that is useful for her) and working a part-time job as well and she has saved up a good chunk of money towards her expensive schooling.
Calculate how much you need for school and figure out what you are going to do to get there, ex. how much you are going to make at a part time job vs how much you will save each month ect. See if you can find a co-op program where you can do an internship/volunteer with a chef of some sort. Your family may be impressed that you are investing the time now to research things that will benefit you later on. I hope this is helpful and that you will get the encouragement you need from your family and figure out what is best for you.
