The priestess had been at the meeting, she had heard Death's instructions, and she had returned to her home, relayed the message to her cousin, and then moved about the neat little hut with numb efficiency. She put on a kettle for tea, she made her bed, she tidied up. All of this done in silence.

Quiet. She wished it was quiet. She wished the endless barrage of voices relented, but they never did. Only one thing had ever calmed them, and he was not there anymore.

When the water boiled the priestess moved to the low table, she poured herself a cup, then another for Bastion, because her cousin would probably want one when he had fully roused for the day. It all seemed terribly automatic, and somehow achingly unfamiliar. Drawing a long breath, the mare sipped her tea, and she waited.

Drag her out, Bas, she needs to distraction.

It was dangerous how easily Bastion fell into the age old habit of letting others take care of him. He was comforted, warm, in his bed, while being fed information that should have required his movement. But it didn't, and neither did his cousin, who had already set out to make tea for him.

Except he knew that she did need his movement, because he knew his cousin like the back of his hand, and he knew she suffered in silence.

So he crawled out of his bed, shook his hair out to try and wake himself up, and trudged over to her side, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind.

"I have an idea." He muttered with quiet excitement at the forlorn woman in his arms. "What if we didn't ignore our orders today, and actually went out.. and scared some humans! Together!" He gasped, as if this was the most novel idea in the world, when really it was just his attempt to try and get his cousin out and distracted. He unraveled himself from her, and then bounced to her side, dancing a fair jig as he tried to tug her sleeve. "Think of it, Noni! Let us strike fear into the hearts of the mortals once more! It'll be just like old times! Well, for you, at least."

Bastion hadn't been let out to scare mortals most of his life. He was the runt.

She tensed, she couldn't help it. She was just so on edge lately, all the time. There was no relief, not from the voices, not from the strain, the heavy emotions weighing her down. For a handful a seconds she remained stiff in her cousin's arms, then began to relax, an inch at a time, until she was leaning back against him, arms rising to lay hands over his, and she sighed.

The idea of going out, of doing anything seemed almost overwhelming, but she didn't say no. He was trying, so hard, to drag her out of the depression she had fallen into. He loved her, he had always loved her, had always been by her side, and she could not deny him. If she were being honest with herself, he was why she was still there, why she had not simply embraced the Insanity and let it consume her. The mare couldn't do that to her cousin, she couldn't leave him behind.

So she patted his hand, and she forced a small smile as he unwound from her to tug at her sleeve. "Alright." Gently she pulled free of his grip, but only so she could reach up to cup dark cheeks, drawing him down as she rose up on tip toe to lay a kiss on his brow. "Let's go."

Scaring humans. It was a novel idea. Death did not merely frighten, they annihilated, they reaped, they destroyed. They left a trail of bodies and blood in their wake, and that carnage inspired fear. This new policy, this...softer approach, was novel. But they would do as they were told.

She'd said yes! He didn't even have to coax her further, she was already humoring him. "Oh, delightful day! What an adventure this is going to be. I have just the thing, too, hum... let me see where did I.."

He let her go, and started to look through his meager belongings. The clink of metals and glass and gems tinkled frequently, until he finally picked out a long, fearsome looking structure. It was placed on his shoulders carefully, and he adjusted it until it - and the long black cape attached to it - settled down against him. The shoulder armor was thin, but alarming; all claws and gnarled pointed tips. It was just a little costume addition to make him look fiercer - and he needed it. Bastion was not a fierce man.

He returned to Nergui, holding the cape over his face like a vampire, and stalked her until he was close enough to pounce. "Grawr! Fearsome, no?"

The excitement in his voice was soothing to hear, and as he drew his arms away she offered him a very soft smile as he searched through his belongs. When her straightened once more with a cap in hand it earned him a twitch of silver brow before he managed to startle a laugh from her. It was weak, short lived, but it was likely the first in nearly a month.

"Dear cousin, they cannot see you." The humans, she meant. "We can inspire in them fear, but they are tragically blind to us." Which was a shame, in her opinion, it would have been so much more satisfying if their mortal eyes could look upon the might was the Last Clans.

Really, it would have been better if they were permitted to kill the humans. That would have proven an excellent outlet, but Nergui would take what she could get in terms of an outlet for her frustrations.

"It is fearsome though," she assured him, moving so she could reach out and rub the fabric of the cape between her fingers. "Well made, but I expect nothing less from you."

"They.." His shoulders slumped. "Can't.." His jaw dropped. "See us...?!"

He was such a youngling when it came to humans.

"But I worked so hard.." There was a pathetic whine in his voice, and he caught as quickly as he could, and cleared his throat. His shoulders straightened once more, pushing the disappointment out. "Well. I suppose it will have to just. Serve as a way to inspire me to be more fearful. Yes, that will do just fine."

He moved to stand by her, turning to hook his arm with hers. "Come, let us - ah, sorry, thorny, hope I did not poke you too hard there - okay, now we fly - sorry again, I will be more careful!"

"No, not us, but our shadows." She wanted to chase that wounded look from his dark features. It was an ingrained, automatic response, and it didn't matter what the mare was going though, she would always look out for Bastion and his well being. "They can also hear our voices, and we, of Death, and show them such terrible visions." Another shadow of a smile as her hand came up to cup his cheek briefly before he was taking her arm and leading her out of the hut and towards the portal.

The apologies were unneeded, and she murmured as such as they walked. The spikes poked, and they prodded, but they did not hurt.

When they reached the portal Nergui took the lead. She had more experience with this, had been to the human world a number of times, where as Bastion, as she recalled, had been there only once(and hadn't that ended interestingly, eh Daisy duck?). When they stepped free they were in a what looked to be an apartment building, or the hallway of one. There were doors to either side, and an elevator at the end hall. The priestess took a moment to take it all in, brows pinched, before a door opened beside them and a human woman walked out and into the hall to head for the elevator.

"Come on," she whispered, giving Bastion's arm a soft tug, following the woman right into the small metal room and waiting until the doors hissed shut again. A pat was given to Bastion's hand before she slipped free of his grasp, and she leaned in close to the breath against the woman's ear. Just a sigh, a tiny sound. But it rose goosebumps on the human's arms and caused her to look over her shoulder, twitchy.

Stepping back, she gestured with an arm to indicate Bastion try his hand.

"Ohh." Bastion breathed out, stunned to silence as his mind tried to consider all the possibilities of scaring a human with their shadows and their visions. That could work out quite nicely... except for his shoulderpads, of course. But it still sounded like so much fun, and he was following her like a scareling, tripping on himself as she led him out to the portal and into the world of humans.

The world of humans!

Bastion had been there twice before, recently. But it had been so strange, and disjointed - that world of magical mice and giant ducks and children - so many children - and a kiss -

He spared a quick moment to think of that kiss, and the mare that had gotten away. He couldn't focus on her for long, however, because Nergui had found herself a target, and she was elegantly frightening the young woman, just enough to make her fret. Marvelous!

It was Bastion's turn now, and he toddled up to the woman, leaned up on her tiptoes, and cleared his voice.

A haunting, raspy sound left him - it was quiet enough to mix in with the musak at first, but then she started to notice, until finally she was hearing the wailing of the dead, and she started to push the buttons of the elevator as fast as she could.

"Oh, happy day Noni, look at her squirm!" He was just so proud of his fine job.

Nergui stood back and watched as Bastion took her place beside the human, employing her same tactic. He did a good job of it. A very subtle moan that rose into something to terrify down to the bones. By the time he had returned to his cousin's side she was beaming at him. "Well done, Bas." She lay her hand on his arm, mismatched eyes glued upon the panicked figure trapped in the elevator with them.

By the time the doors finally whispered open to release the woman she was close to hyperventilating, and the moment she was able she rushed free, hurrying down the hall and around the corner. The mare could hear her frantic foot steps for a long time, even after she'd disappeared. It brought a tiny kernel of satisfaction to the priestess, a little happiness that pushed back her sorrow, if only momentarily.

"Very well done." That small hand on Bastion's arm gave him a fond pat, then she was sliding her arm within his so she could steer him out of the elevator, heading for the nearest door they could use to return home. "I'm proud of you."

Bastion laughed riotously as the woman ran, and he let his cousin lead him out because he could hardly see straight on his own. He was proud, of course. Proud beyond measure. But more importantly, watching that human's reaction brought him all sorts of intoxicating amusement. He loved it. He loved it.

"Ah, I've been missing out for so long!" He wheezed out through his tears. "Jewels are still my first love, but ah, this.. this too satisfies!"

He was laughing still, even as Nergui led him home. And he would not stop laughing until long, long after they'd reached it.
