Gods & Goddesses
The DreamWalkers worship the Oneiroi, Sons of the Goddess Nyx. In particular Morpheus the winged God of Dreams, Phobetor the God of Nightmares and Phantasus the God of Illusion.
Main Beliefs
The DreamWalkers believe themselves the Oneiroi's Choosen..for they and they alone have been graced with the honor of a true life. The herd believes that everything outside of their lands are merely the illusionary visions of what
could be , creatures that reside in such a place are not alive but merely dream creatures that must be prayed into existence if one desires to do so.
Thoughts About..Visitors.The Dreamwalkers see outsiders as dream creatures that are not truly alive, if a dream creature is persistent enough it may be granted reality as a dream creature who sticks around is seen as sent by the Oneiroi to join them.
Creating a being is sacred and holy and should not be done without much thought according to the herd and it is not unheard of for persistent dreams (aka lost visitors) to spend a great deal of time attempting to communicate before the herd decides to grant them reality through prayer. The giving of affection to dream creatures without a prayer of reality is seen as perverse and not talked about in public.
Dream creatures who are unkind or violent are labeled Nightmares and seen as a test by the Oneiroi. Nightmares are sent to prove that the Dreamwalkers remain strong enough to continue being the Oneiroi's chosen and Nightmares are to be banished (killed) or chased back into the Dream realm where they belong.
Thoughts About...Mates & FamilyThe DreamWalkers believe that the entire herd is one big family and while one might feel closer to some then others the herd does not tend to relegate themselves to one particular love or mate. While herdmates who are closer to one another might spend a great deal of time together and even partner up to pray for a foal from the Realm of Dreams this does not stop either party from spending time or giving affection to anyone else. (aka Lifemates are somewhat unusual and the relationships tend to be on the more open side).
The creation of foals is not linked to a biological action in the herds mind, Foals are prayed for or sent by the Oneiroi, they are born by mares just as the Oneiroi were born by Nyx, Godess of the Night but not always by the mare who prayed them into being and thus foals that are born within the herd are not always raised by their biological parents. If a foal arrives and is unclaimed (no one steps forward to admit praying for it) then it is seen as sent by the Oneiroi and often raised as part of the priestly sect. As the herd places little thought to typical family dynamics it is possible for a foal to be prayed for by more then two parents and should there be a dispute about who brought a foal into being the foal will be raised by ALL who claim it, as a parental group. Likewise a parental group does not have to be made of a male/female pairing but can be of any gender make-up.
Thoughts about .... Colors and MarkingsAlthough the DreamWalkers do not ban any particular hide color or marking, pale & rainbow hide colorations or nightly & cloudy markings are considered a marking of favor from the Oneiroi and Soquili bearing these features will have an easier time gaining position in the herd.
That said it is possible for one to fall out of favor of the Oneiroi and poor choices or mismanagement is seen as a curse by the Oneiroi and a sign that favor has fallen and the herd should vote them out of position. (Those with the Gods favor would not be making poor decisions)
Thoughts About .... BreedsThe Dreamwalkers have no particular thoughts about breeds, All Soquili are dream creatures or DreamWalkers and both come in a variety of shapes and forms as imagined by the Oneiroi.
Thoughts about....Death or LeavingDreamWalkers do not die, they merely return to the Dream Realm. Some Dreamwalkers choose to take their bodies with them in case they someday choose to return and be resurrected through Prayer (leave the herd) or they leave their bodies behind as they are tired of reality (true death). In either case it is seen as a 'death'. Death is mourned as a temporary loss of companionship (you can no longer interact or communicate with the deceased) But DreamWalkers take solace in the knowledge that everyone returns to the Dream Realm someday and those who have departed will be waiting for them when they make the journey themselves (Belief in an afterlife)
If a departed members returns to be resurrected through Prayer they will be returned to reality - however to keep the returned from mourning the loss of those they met on the otherside (loved ones who have passed on) the Oneiroi are merciful and erase the memories of those interactions, leaving only an illusionary dream in it's wake (returning members will believe that everything they remember happening to them outside of the herdland is a make believe dream and not what really happened to them. ). Scars on a returning member are seen as a sign that the member has undergone some trial or tribulation in the afterlife and passed, often this trial is represented through some traumatic part of the dream granted them by the Oneiroi.
Thoughts About...Familiars & WildlifeThe DreamWalkers believe that the wildlife within their herdlands are real, they are animals that have been put there for the use of the herd...or to ensure that the herdlands are healthy. Wildlife that threaten a Soquili is considered a Lesser Nightmare however and is dealt with by the Guardian and his Champions.
Familiars are wildlife that have proven themselves in some manner to the Oneiroi and as such have been granted a greater intelligence and understanding of the world around them. Familiars are schooled in the herds ways and welcome to mingle with the herd as trusted friends. Familiars who seem skeptical about the herds beliefs are tolerated a bit more then Soquili who dare to question them ...after all they are still just animals and should not be expected to have the same level of understanding and intelligence as the Oneiroi's true choosen.
Thoughts about ...Skepticism The DreamWalkers are wholly devoted to their beliefs and generally do not tolerate the questioning of those beliefs well. Foals and the Newly brought to reality are somewhat exempt as they are considered 'still learning' and will generally be sent to the Oracles or Shepherds for further instruction. Someone who continues to question things and make waves however is at best considered dimwitted and treated as such and at worst considered a test by the Oneiroi that must be dispatched. The way the herd reacts to skepticism is largely based on the Soquili manner. Forceful or angry arguments are more likely to be considered a test where gentle, less demanding prods are generally seen as the innocent questions of a Soquili simply unable to grasp simple concepts. Simple minded Soquili like these are generally assigned menial tasks and kept away from the foals and newly created to keep from tainting them with false information.
Ceremonies
The Spring Festival The Spring festival takes place upon the arrival of the 'First Leaf', as the days warm and the seasons begin to notably change the Oracles keep a close watch upon the tree's in the Gladelands, as soon as the first bud produces a leaf the Spring Festival preparations begin.
The Spring festival has always been a celebration of rebirth, the budding of the First Leaf is a symbol of fresh starts and new life. The herd has made it through another year as the Oneiroi's favored sons and daughters, the mistakes of last year must be forgiven and the hopes of this new year must be celebrated
The Spring Festival generally consists of the following ceremonies & traditions though the order they are placed in is up to the Oracles overseeing the Ceremony.
A Forgiveness Ceremony, where members of the herd can formally forgive those who have slighted them this last year, it is important that to the herd that all member's move forward as a well balanced and cohesive herd. Because all slights are unique the way in which one forgives another is also unique - for some it is a public airing of the grievance and then a more formal proclamation of forgiveness, for others it is simply a nod of the head and a quiet 'You are forgiven' . It is customary for the forgiven to present a gift of reconciliation to those they have wronged during the feast later on in the festival, a way to start this year off on the right hoof with one another.
The Coming of Age Ceremony, where members can declare the pathways the Oneiroi have set them upon for the coming year - this is the time for old members to declare a new area of focus if their old job no longer suits them for some reason and for the Youth and newly brought to reality to choose the path they wish to study. It is a simple ceremony where the Oracles ask those who have made a decision to step forward, one at a time they are asked to declare their chosen path, no reasons for the choice need be given, the Dreamwalker's generally accept that herd members decisions are based upon signs from the Oneiroi. After the Spring Festival is completed these members will be contacted by members of their new paths for training and assignment.
Prayers for New Life, The Oracles lead the herd in a general prayer for their numbers to grow, parent groups who want to raise foals can ask to have their names mentioned in the prayer for greater chance of success.
The Telling of the First Herd, A verbal recounting of the herds creation by the Oneiroi.
The Feast and Celebration, Generally the last part of the festival, the feast is a grand way to use the last of the winter store's while the celebration is seen as a time for rejoicing with friends and family. There are stories, dancing, singing and good conversations to be had by all.
- Other Celebrations coming as..we make them up lol -
