There's no note this time; you wake up in the middle of the night to find yourself standing at the entrance to an enormous maze. Towering hedges stretch on for what seem like forever, and you have no idea where at school you even are, but it seems like every time you try to step backwards, you can't. Your footsteps only carry you forwards, to the maze.

"Greetings," says a voice to your left, and when you turn you can see a pale haired man with sharp teeth smiling genially at you. "My name is Professor Zephron; I'm the Potions Professor here at school, and I'm here to guide you through your exam."

He gestures towards the maze. "It's simple, really - all you have to do is get through the maze. I'll be waiting on the other side with your certificate, so come find me, okay?"

And with a grin, he shifts into a monstrous emerald hellhound and darts away, deep into the maze.

Well. Guess you better get started!

THE EXAM

There are two parts to this exam! You must complete both in order to successfully complete it!

PART 1: COUNTING STEPS

You need to get to 30 steps in order to get to Part 2! At each milestone passed there will be a small status effect, so make sure you're reading them carefully!

Roll 1d12 with each post to see how many steps you go!
At 5 steps you realize the world has tipped and you are now walking upside down. It doesn't hurt, but it sure feels weird...
At 10 steps you're right side up again, but it's like you're walking through thick mud, though you see none. Your legs feel heavier than normal.
At 15 steps your legs feel okay, but now the maze keeps going in circles around you and it's starting to make you feel kind of sick...
At 20 steps (thankfully) the world has stopped spinning, but you realize that somehow you've shrunk. Or maybe the maze has just gotten bigger.
At 25 steps, you seem to be your normal size again, but it's so cold and so windy it's almost as though you're being pushed backwards.
At 30 steps, you seem to have finally made it through almost the entire maze. In fact, you think you can see the door up ahead, except...

Except....

PART 2: THE FIGHT

As you near the end of the maze, something huge blocks your way - a dark shadow that has been lurking ever since you started walking. It looms in front of you and seems to want to deny you passageway - but you've already come this far, you're not going to let a little shadow get in your way!

show spoiler

Except as the shadow moves closer, it shifts form - and suddenly you're facing not a shadow, but yourself; except wispy tendrils of black are seen emanating from the fingers and toes, even the eyes upon occassion.

How...weird.

Your shadow self has 50 HP.
Use standard attack dice to kill it (2d10 - 6)!
It does 2 autodamage for every successful attack. If you miss, you don't take autodamage!
You are allowed to use FEARS!

Upon dissipation of your shadow self, you finally reach the end of the maze and burst through. An emerald colored hellhound sits beneath a nearby tree, looking as pleased as pie. When you walk nearer, he shifts form and the Professor comes into view again, raking blonde hair out of his eyes. There is a stack of parchments beside him; Certificates of Exam Completion.

"Congrats," he says pleasantly, and bends to pick up one of the parchments. He hands it to you with a smile. "Welcome to Hob level."

She dreamed, or so she thought. One moment curled in her bed with the comforting warmth of Marosa asleep beside her, the next she stood at the entrance to a vast, dark maze with no recollection of how she had gotten there. For long moments she lingered there, peering into the dark with glowing eyes casting bright highlights over mocha skin. If this was the academy, it was no part she had ever seen before. Not ominous, not exactly, but unknown. Nervously, the djinn wet her lips, turning to cast a curious glance around, only to herself face to face with a very toothy grin. "Oh!"

The figure, a professor, greeted her, introducing himself, and Yaya calmed visibly, succumbing to an uneasy smile and a nervous giggle. "It's a pleasure to meet you." At least at the moment.

He gestured towards the maze, and cerulean eyes obligingly followed. So this was her exam. Unexpected, somewhat. She was well past due to move into the third year, but she could not remember having signed up for the test. Bust since she was here, and the maze stood before her, now was as good a time as any to progress. As Zephron departed she offered a soft wiggle of her fingers in parting, then, when she was well and truly alone, she started forward herself.

It seemed a traditional maze, at least at first, but after a handful of steps things got very twisted. Up felt like down, down was up, and though her feet stayed firmly planted on the grass, it felt very much like the blood was rushing to her head as if she were suspended upside down.

The djinn kept moving, and the world seemed to right itself again. She breathed a sigh of relief, delighted that gravity was behaving itself, and continued onward. This wasn't so bad.

Oh, but did it feel like she was trudging through the thickest mud. Her legs weighed a ton, and every step was a strong. She wasn't even sure when it had happened, or for how long, but she noticed it now, and it was awful. "What is happening?" The question was presented to the maze itself, but unsurprisingly, it had no answers for her.

After a bit the heavy feeling fading, but her surroundings swirled. Spinning around her at a pace that set her stomach turning unkindly, and full lips pressed together as she lay palms over the tanned stretch of skin of her abdomen.

The maze itself was not exactly hard, but whatever else was going on presented a worthy challenge. Getting lost wouldn't be the djinn's problem, but she may very well become overwhelmed by everything else that was happening.

A desire to escape the craziness the seemed to seep out of the maze itself, Hadiyya picked up the pace, walking quickly as she took twists and turns. And was it just her, or was were the hedges getting taller? Hedges and grass. sighing, the ghoul fell into an easy jog, not her preferred pace, not by a long shot, but anything to make up for the sudden and drastic decrease in size.

Though, to be fair, as Topsy turvy as the maze was, it was child's play compared to some of the other obstacles the djinn had faced in her time at Amity.

Back to her original size, she maintained her steady jog, a necessity now, as a rough wind had picked up. It whistled through the hedges, and it seemed to Yaya as if it meant to push her back, keep her from progressing forward. Well nuts to that, she wasn't about to let wind foil her efforts to seek higher education.

Finally she reached what she thought was the end. There was a door up ahead. Grinning, the ghoul put on a little extra burst of speed, hurrying for the exit, only to skid to a sudden stop as something large, dark, and looming rises up to bloke her path. "Of course," she says softly, exasperation thick in her voice.

"Sorry shadow, I've come to far to be stopped by you."

The closer she got, the more clear the shadow became until it was herself standing before the door, blocking the path. Glowing eyes narrowed, and she gave a harsh sniff as she drew on her magic to call water to her hand. "If it is a fight that is needed, then so be it."

The shadow moved, lunging at her with fingers tapered into claws, and Yaya jerked away, too slow, hissing at the sting of the bright scratches on her arm. "You look like me, but no imitation can ever be as good as the original."

The water swirled between her hands, and she twisted, moving forward, to send that glittering magic in a hard hitting arc that took the shadow in the chest, forcing it back. It staggered, but regained it's balance much too quickly.

That Jack damn nails hurt where they tore across her skin, but it was an ignorable pain. Nothing really, not compared to the damage she'd taken at the top of that tower. The scar was still fresh, Pink and soft where it curled just above her right hip. The one who'd given it to her, that had been a monster, not his shade.

The djinn wielded her element like an extension of her own body. Water hit that slender frame in a barrage, over and over until it was pressed against the door at it's back.

Over and over she struck, pinning that dark imitation. It barely had a chance to retaliate, but it tried. A scratch here, a nick there. The djinn didn't even feel it now. She was relentless.

A shame a shadow couldn't drown...

She had enjoyed watching hope and light fade from that pretty little hunter's eyes as she'd filled her poor lungs with fluid. A repeat performance would have been just dandy.

"You are nothing, and I will destroy you." It came out as a purr between blows. She had never had much love of fighting before, but something seemed to have changed. She was certainly enjoying herself now.

The shadow fell to it's knees, and the djinn laughed, a melodic, airy sound that really shouldn't have belonged with the scenario unfolding between the hedgerows.

It was a wave that brought the shadow down. A wall of water, crashing forward to slam that dark body back against the door. The djinn was all smiled, eyes blazing, energized by the rush of magic and the intoxicating giddiness that came from the mere touch of her element. "Goodbye," she cooed, the water swirling in clear orbs at her fingertips falling in a soft rain against the grass. It dissipated, and Yaya moved forward to open the door.

On the other side the hellhoud sat waiting at the base of a tall tree, and the ghoul offered him a pleased smile as she strode over the grass to meet him. The dog vanished, and her Professor smiles back at her, all teeth and pride. "Job well done." A tip of his head, a brush of long fingers, to push blonde hair from his eyes before he reached back to a stack of parchment.

"Welcome to Hob level," he says to her, handing her a certificate, and she takes it, beaming up at him.

"Thank you, sir."

It wasn't a dream.
