THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Y. Ignatius Svarog's Point Tally

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM
THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

--------------------------------------------

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

  • Cutthroat Kitchen

To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.

Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.

  • Lurking Library

In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:

      - 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
      - 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
      - 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
      - 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
      - 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)

  • Bloodcurdling Bedroom

The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

Ignatius yawned loudly, stretching his shoulders so far out that he heard one pop for a moment. Morning already? How long had he been asleep?

The lightning elemental decided that that wouldn't do and stumbled towards the door in his half-drowsy state, opening it to greet the day in little more than a pair of pajama bottoms -- oh, there was a note on the door? Blah blah blah what in Halloween was a NMBHRAT -- oh, wait, a test? Ignatius yawned again, taking the note off the door and strolling back towards his closet. Well, he was always ready for a test. Sounded like a new challenge to him.

Come at anytime to Ignatius apparently meant come immediately, as Ignatius was dressed, out of his dorm, and to the location in absolutely no time flat.

Well, this place looked terrible.

Ignatius shrugged. Just made it more of a challenge to navigate, then, he was sure. Walking up to the door, he plucked off the note and read through the scrawled handwriting, managing to mine what he could from it.

Yeah, he'd circumvent his death. Easily.

Ignatius wasn't afraid of anything, really (crazy Medea and Death clashes withstanding) and stepped right in, stepping up to the challenge as it were. The door slammed shut behind him, but he paid it no mind at all, simply moving forward so he could conquer his first challenge -- getting through this weird kitchen. Luckily, Ignatius was known for his fairly fast strides and managed to conquer a sizable starting chunk very quickly.

Because he went quickly, he managed to knock over a very loud box of bones. "Skeletons are missing something, I think," remarked Ignatius, laughing at his own jokes, before moving on.

Ignatius' confidence in his ability to conquer this easily resulted in a miscalculation.

That was, Ignatius tripped and fell right into a vat of what looked to be melted chocolate Melted chocolate? Curiously, Ignatius brought a bit up to his nose and sniffed it, wondering what exactly a vat of melted chocolate was doing in this place. It smelled good, whatever the reason, and Ignatius stopped his adventure for a moment to try a bit of the chocolate...

Only to stick his tongue out. Maybe not.

Ignatius clawed himself out of the vat and decided to keep going instead. He had a building to conquer!

Perhaps he was just slowed down by the amount of chocolate, or "chocolate" (who really knew) that was on him, but Ignatius was not moving quite as fast as he had been when he initially entered the place.

Perhaps he didn't need to move around so quickly, though. That had to be the exit!

Ignatius rushed towards a door, opening it up to find there was ... nothing ... that looked like a -- gah! The lightning elemental jumped back, but it was too late for that. He already had some of the ice water dumped on him, and it wasn't necessarily that the water was cold that was the biggest problem.

Bzzzt.

"Aww, man."

Bzzzt.

"I gotta be ready for this!"

Bzzzt.

Grumbling, Ignatius concentrated, attempting to turn a bit more like the ghosts and become a little less ... solid. After a few moments of trying (and failing!) it worked, and the water fell right off him and onto the ground. He managed to turn back solid and walk away, still helplessly twitching every once in a while.

Ignatius managed to sight another door, but he squinted his eyes at it.

"Not this time."

Before opening the door, Ignatius turned himself a bit incorporeal, leaving only his hand solid to yank open the door. That seemed to have been the right call, as more water came tumbling down, going right to the floor even if it left a few meaningful buzzes on the way down.

"Hah."

Like a child, Ignatius stuck out his tongue and blew raspberries at the puddle before moving on like nothing had happened.

"Really."

Another door, looked exactly the same as the first two. This guy wasn't fooling anyone. Like he was used to the drill, he closed his eyes, went incorporeal besides for his hand, yanked the door open, and walked away as the ice water unceremoniously fell to the ground in a large splash.

"Next!"

Finally, Ignatius managed to come across what the actual exit to this stupid kitchen was. Victorious, Ignatius hummed a video game victory song under his breath as he headed towards the next room, just to step in a pile of glue.

For a moment, he stared at his foot, wondering what to do with it, before shrugging. Eh.

He grabbed his leg, yanked it away from the floor and the glue, and kept walking, even if he had to raise his leg a bit higher off the ground this time to make sure he had enough force with this glue attached to the bottom or ... something like that.

Books, books, and more books seemed to be the next room. Was this supposed to be a haunted library or something?

Ignatius laughed.

So spooky, right?

Not at all alarmed by this new room, Ignatius strolled forward, picking up a book and flicking through it. He picked up another one, shrugged when it didn't react, and threw it over his shoulder for someone else to find. (Brenley would probably be cringing right now at the way Ignatius just threw some book away, but that really wasn't his immediate concern). The third book he picked up, though...

He clicked the two together, and looked up to see a door that most definitely didn't have any ice water buckets attached to it--he checked before even going near the thing, anyway.

"Wow, that was just sad. Try harder!"

Hanging onto his two books, Ignatius walked through the door, unaffected.

This room was rather plain except for a set of metallic sticks in a box and a door in front of him. What was he supposed to do here? Get through the door somehow?

Ignatius squinted at the door. Hm...

Not particularly good at finesse, grace, or generally anything requiring extended concentration, Ignatius simply decided to try punching the door open.

It wasn't very effective.

"Well..."

If punching it didn't work, maybe kicking it would. Ignatius looked at the door and his foot, before swirling his leg up and attempting to bash the door open with a well-placed strong kick.

The door certainly wobbled, and it seemed like it was about to pop right open ... but then nothing happened and it just failed again.

"What else..."

Ignatius just ... wasn't very good at opening locked doors, apparently. This time he tried a double kick and absolutely nothing happened. Honestly, the singular kick had been far more effective.

"Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way."

Probably.

Finally, Ignatius decided to plop down and use his brain. What could he use to get the door open?

... Oh, maybe the sticks were what he was supposed to be using. He lifted one out of the box, looking it over and trying to determine how exactly he was supposed to use this to get out a door. Well, he could just jam it in the lock, probably, and move it around until something made some kind of noise or something, like the unlocking noise. People did that all the time in those human spy creeple movies. What did they call it? Lockpicking?

Ignatius crawled towards the lock, unceremoniously jamming the lockpick in the lock and moving it around, waiting until he heard the telltale click to tell him that the door had indeed opened.

"WOOP WOOP!" Ignatius let out a victorious holler, grabbing his books and storming outside. This Haunted House had nothing on how great at haunted houses he was. It didn't surprise him at all that he was told that he was now a Knob for his work, and it especially didn't surprise him that he got a certificate. Of course he had. He was just that awesome.

And now he was caught up to Piper and Brenley.

Ha!
