THE EXAM: MAZE OF MADNESS (Y2 > Y3)

There's no note this time; you wake up in the middle of the night to find yourself standing at the entrance to an enormous maze. Towering hedges stretch on for what seem like forever, and you have no idea where at school you even are, but it seems like every time you try to step backwards, you can't. Your footsteps only carry you forwards, to the maze.

"Greetings," says a voice to your left, and when you turn you can see a pale haired man with sharp teeth smiling genially at you. "My name is Professor Zephron; I'm the Potions Professor here at school, and I'm here to guide you through your exam."

He gestures towards the maze. "It's simple, really - all you have to do is get through the maze. I'll be waiting on the other side with your certificate, so come find me, okay?"

And with a grin, he shifts into a monstrous emerald hellhound and darts away, deep into the maze.

Well. Guess you better get started!

THE EXAM
There are two parts to this exam! You must complete both in order to successfully complete it!

PART 1: COUNTING STEPS

You need to get to 30 steps in order to get to Part 2! At each milestone passed there will be a small status effect, so make sure you're reading them carefully!

  • Roll 1d12 with each post to see how many steps you go!
  • At 5 steps you realize the world has tipped and you are now walking upside down. It doesn't hurt, but it sure feels weird...
  • At 10 steps you're right side up again, but it's like you're walking through thick mud, though you see none. Your legs feel heavier than normal.
  • At 15 steps your legs feel okay, but now the maze keeps going in circles around you and it's starting to make you feel kind of sick...
  • At 20 steps (thankfully) the world has stopped spinning, but you realize that somehow you've shrunk. Or maybe the maze has just gotten bigger.
  • At 25 steps, you seem to be your normal size again, but it's so cold and so windy it's almost as though you're being pushed backwards.
  • At 30 steps, you seem to have finally made it through almost the entire maze. In fact, you think you can see the door up ahead, except...

    Except....

PART 2: THE FIGHT

As you near the end of the maze, something huge blocks your way - a dark shadow that has been lurking ever since you started walking. It looms in front of you and seems to want to deny you passageway - but you've already come this far, you're not going to let a little shadow get in your way!

Except as the shadow moves closer, it shifts form - and suddenly you're facing not a shadow, but yourself; except wispy tendrils of black are seen emanating from the fingers and toes, even the eyes upon occassion.

    How...weird.

  • Your shadow self has 50 HP.
  • Use standard attack dice to kill it (2d8 - 6)!
  • It does 2 autodamage for every successful attack. If you miss, you don't take autodamage!
  • You are allowed to use FEARS!

Upon dissipation of your shadow self, you finally reach the end of the maze and burst through. An emerald colored hellhound sits beneath a nearby tree, looking as pleased as pie. When you walk nearer, he shifts form and the Professor comes into view again, raking blonde hair out of his eyes. There is a stack of parchments beside him; Certificates of Exam Completion.

"Congrats," he says pleasantly, and bends to pick up one of the parchments. He hands it to you with a smile. "Welcome to Hob level."

What in Halloween?

This was definitely not where she had fallen asleep. For one, she would never fall asleep in front of a maze. And for another, she would never go out in public looking like such a mess! She was in her pyjamas, in front of a professor, with her hair all tussled and even slightly revealing her --

In front of a professor?!

In response to Professor Zephron, Serafina squeaked hopelessly, unable to formulate any kind of decent response. She wasn't ready for this! She looked like a slob! What did the professor think? Did he think she had not prepared properly for -- her exam?! How did she get here? Did she sleepwalk here? She didn't even know that was a thing ghosts did but she guessed it wouldn't surprise her and --

Maze.

That would be the way to redeem herself. Get through the maze as quickly as possible.

Did something change? She didn't feel like she was walking the right way anymore -- was she --

Upside down?!

What was wrong with this maze what was wrong with this maze what was wrong with this maze...

Walking upside down was very disorienting, especially as Serafina had only recently woken up. As a consequence, Serafina was actually moving very slowly, and only managed to bring herself forward a couple more steps.

Fortunately, after another step, the world seemed to right itself again, and she was no longer walking ... upside down, as it were. How was that even happening? She knew she could levitate as a ghost fairly easily but --

Well.

If she had learned anything about some of the strange things that happened at Amityville, she had learned that perhaps it was best to not ask questions about the most bizarre things that happened. Like the fact that even though the ground looked normal, she felt like, with every step, she was dragging her legs through mud. It was very hard to move, and Serafina gritted her teeth, attempting to get through the nonexistent muck.

When she got herself through the muck, she looked up, relieved that she could move her feet again.

But the world started swirling, and it felt nauseated.

Being nauseous was apparently helping her walk, as she found herself moving her legs just a bit faster, even if most of her steps were side-stumbles or wobbles and other such things that were leaving her with a pale face.

Well.

Paler than it already was, anyway. She looked as white as porcelain, and slumped against the wall immediately when it came to a stop.

It was good that ghouls like Serafina didn't need to eat. She didn't have anything to let come back up from the terrible nausea she felt. The ghoul took a minute or two to gather herself back up before starting her trudge forward once again, hoping to get out of this maze and get her completion certificate more sooner than later.

But the maze seemed insurmountable.

Why was it so big?!

Serafina was just about done with this maze, though, and so she marched on, even as the maze seemed to be impossibly big.

After a few more steps, though, the maze had gotten itself back to a normal size. Thank Jack. The exit had to be soon out of here, right? What was she feeling towards her front? It was a bit chilly, in the unnatural, fear-laden way that she actually noticed it ... but she wouldn't let it bother her.

In fact, she didn't even notice the accompanying winds coming at her at all. It went through her, basically, and made her much, much faster. She so overshot her goal door that she ended up nearly ramming herself into it.

"DOOR!"

Thank Jack. Maybe now she could get out of this stupid maze, become a hobgoblin, and maybe go back to bed. The pumpkin sun was not too far in the sky yet, and she needed her beauty sleep --

What was ...

The shadow that she saw on the other side of the door made her freeze in place, Serafina's eyes widening. Oh dear. She looked over her shoulder, pondering the worth of running back into the maze. Maybe there was another exit? This was clearly the wrong one, with a shadow pursuing her and coming closer and ... wait...

That was ...

"Me?"

It didn't look good. There were shadows and tendrils leaking off the fingers and toes of its body, and it stared, glaze digging in her and making her feel the menacing deep within her heart.

Was this her challenge? To defeat ... herself?

Well... Best not to waste time, then.

Serafina concentrated on her fingers, letting them lengthen into the claws she knew well. Her eyes narrowed at the shadow in front of her, and she lunged, striking twice with her claws in an attempt to cause significant damage.

She was never very good at fighting, so it honestly wasn't surprising to Serafina when she ended up getting a bit injured herself in the process. Still, that had at least given her a nice start, she ... hoped anyway ...

Of course, when she wasn't using her FEAR, her hits were a total dud. Not surprising.

But the shadow didn't injure her either so ... that was a win, she guessed. Was it mirroring her that well?

Her next hit had a bit more luck, but of course, when she damaged the shadow, it damaged her. Too bad she couldn't figure out a way to get it injured without injuring herself...

Ah! That was a little better! She was getting the hang of this, maybe. Maybe her spars with Brenley and Trisha had helped her out a bit, even though she had lost one of them in a most spectacular fashion.

(She was really, really bad at this fighting thing.)

But it was still hurting her, and that wasn't good. She needed to get this thing down before it took her down, too... So much for being her shadow self in that case.

It was giving her a really creepy, dead-eyed look. Hur, hur, dead-eyed. She just made a funny.

(Jack, she was tired.)

Another hit! And one back, of course. Well, so long as she could keep up a fairly steady rhythm, she should be fine, right?

... Right.

That was a hit! A bad one, though. Serafina winced. This revenge hitting the shadow was doing was starting to hurt a bit...

And her side...

Stupid cackling shadow. It seemed to be amused by how horribly Serafina was doing!

And a spectacular miss!

At least when she missed, it didn't hurt her any less. Was this shadow FEAR corrosive or something?
