INTERMEDIATE CLASS:

NAME OF CLASS: Trashbot Upgrading - Intermediate
PROFESSOR NAME: Moira *********, Janitor

Prerequisites:
- Must be Y2 or above.
- Must have passed Trashology 101 and have earned the Beginner Trashbot Summon learned ability.

General Information: Those who have learned to summon their own little Trashbots have found the mechanical devices to be very helpful, or at least not very unhelpful. But they are small and a little puny, and could stand to be upgraded. But you'll have to upgrade it yourself... are you up to the challenge?

Fortunately, Moira has a lovely, if greasy, robotics workshop where she does maintenance for all the full-size Trashbots! And she's more than happy to let her faithful students use it.

Mechanics:

Step One:
After arriving in the workshop, summon your Trashbot as you normally would, rolling 1d4.
--- If you roll a 1, your Trashbot arrives looking a bit dinged up. Your Trashbot's starting HP is 15.
--- If you roll 2 or 3, your Trashbot looks pretty much the way it always does. Your Trashbot's starting HP is 20.
--- If you roll a 4, your Trashbot arrives gleaming and in peak condition! Your Trashbot's starting HP is 25.

Step Two:
You must select your components. There's a nice box of scraps available for your perusal. Roll 4d8 - the numbers you roll determines what you'll be working with to upgrade your Trashbot. If you roll two of the same number, that's fine - you'll just install two identical items onto your Trashbot.

You'll also note that each component has a number after it in brackets. Keep that number in mind - you'll see why in the next step.

1 - A small drill bit that could be attached to a Trashbot arm. Not too challenging. [2]
2 - A metal spiked bumper. Very metal. It doesn't look all that difficult to get on there. [4]
3 - A bit of metal plating, suitable for protection. Drilling into the Trashbot will be required for installation.[6]
4 - A scoop that could go on the front or back of your Trashbot! It has nice lifting power, but you'll need to install gearworks inside the Trashbot to get it on there... [8]
5 - A blunted blade for slicing light objects. It should fit onto the Trashbot's existing hardware without too much trouble. [4]
6 - A really nice articulated claw! Excellent for picking things up dextrously, but it looks like a fiddly thing to install... [8]
7 - A... rearview mirror? Does your Trashbot really need one of these? Well, maybe it does. It doesn't look too hard to install, at least. [2]
8 - A flame decal etching set! Extremely cool, but it does require you to etch metal. [6]

Step Three:
Now for the hard part: actually modifying your Trashbot! You must roll 1d6 four times in four separate posts, one post for each of your four components.

Remember the numbers above? That signifies the amount of base damage you can potentially do to your Trashbot (not to you) as you work to install the new parts. How much damage your Trashbot actually takes depends on both that base damage and the modifier you create in this round.

Again, rolling 1d6 per component...

1 - Something inside the Trashbot goes bzzzzt. Ow! Take the component's full damage.
2 - A scraping, ratcheting sound emerges from the Trashbot's chassis. Hm. Take half damage.
3 - Slow and steady... it takes a while, but it looks like the part is successfully installed with no damage.
4 - Is... is that something burning?! Yikes. Whatever you did, it's not looking good. Take the component's full damage.
5 - Your tools slip and scrape something that looked kind of important. Take half damage.
6 - You're a wizard genius! At least at this moment. The part is successfully installed with no damage.

If, at the end of the installation progress, your Trashbot still has some HP remaining? Congratulations! You have successfully upgraded your Trashbot and can claim the learned ability Intermediate Trashbot Summon. The components you put on your Trashbot can also be mentioned in RP for flavor.

If your Trashbot loses all of its HP, it flees in self-defense and you must wait 24 OOC hours before trying again - it takes a while for them to reboot, okay?

Happy upgrading!

Trashbots were pretty high on Zar's list of things he wasn't fond of, so finding that the class he'd taken last time - which had ended in him eventually having to take a very long shower with some very strong chemicals to get himself back to normal - was absolutely terrible.

But graduation was important to him, so there he was, this time not in the large trash processing warehouse but instead in a greasy - and therefore almost equally disgusting - workshop. He was tasked with upgrading a stupid little robot, his "reward" for last time's terrible efforts. It still had a few handprints on it from him that he hadn't bothered to scrub off.

He hated it and gave it a look that said so.

Barth came looking entirely pleased, and not dressed quite as leisure-frilly-formal as he normally was. He still wore boots, but for a top he only had a dark button-up shirt, which he wore loosely. He was more of a thinker/planner as a rule, but this was, at least, one area where he was truly happy to wile away hours just tinkering.

It was a happiness/contentment not found very often in the demon, who regarded most things (and especially classes, and people) with trepidation. He had a looming fear of violence, or busywork, or effort.

Often rightfully so.

He was also consequentially very happy to see his bot. He hadn't gotten the chance to know it very well, but surely there was no better way than upgrades.

And then it was time to select the parts to attach to the stupid robot. Zar sulkily made his way to the box and picked out a few things, not really understanding what any of them actually were and hoping that somehow through some miracle he'd figure it out as he went along. He didn't have the foggiest idea how robots actually worked, it was even more incomprehensible to him than magic. He expected that smarter people than him simply stuffed some cogs in a metal box and let some kind of unnatural nature take it's course.

He was not optimistic for the fate of his trashbot.

The miniature trashbots were not the ten foot monstrosities they'd had to wrangle, so the parts weren't large, at least. Still a little much for Barth to carry.

"Zar, would you err, mind?"

Barth folded his legs, and examined his bot carefully. Things, especially things created from Fear, often developed their own distinct personalities and drives. When working with the parts, it was important to pay attention to their potential. The sort of...whole that they wanted to become.

"Don't worry, I've done this before with other, err, mobile units. You look like the aggressive sort. Just err, do me a favor and play nicely while we do the outfitting. What do you think of these? Zar, could you get, err- the sort of spiked bits?"

The trashbot continued to spin around in very pointed circles.

Zar, still with no idea what anything actually was, grabbed the spikiest bits he could find and obediently brought them back. He felt bad even as he picked them up, completely clueless and unhelpful when it came to matters like this. He was no Christof, in actuality he was not competent at any kind of creation.

Setting the pieces down he gave Barth an uncertain grimace. "I erm. Hopefully those are right." he said anxiously before bustling off back to his own trashbot, which he proceeded to completely jack up.

It was the baskets all over again.

Barth warmed up with a preliminary, slow, get-to-know-you inspection.

It didn't seem to do any harm, at least.

"Err, a little less fire," Barth counseled, leaning slightly away from Zar's trashbot.

His continued to swivel, but he waited, and with a slight scrape and over an unnecessary amount of time managed to screw in the first bolt of the first bumper.

Zar was trying. Unfortunately trying didn't count for much when you had no idea what you were doing. Following the instructions as best he could, he tried to engrave the decal onto the metal. It was clumsy work thanks to his inexperience and eventually he gave up on it before the metal started to buckle or weaken too much.

"I'm trying." he said, as it if helped.

Barth proceeded to spend an inordinate amount of time aligning the next bumper.

"Perhaps here? We can fit it at every angle, but if you'd like it full-circle..."

There was a spark, and Barth's too started to smoke.

"Haha. A bit err. A bit temperamental, aren't they?"

"No kidding." Zar said, biting his tongue in concentration, "Though I could have told you that back when their larger versions were swinging us over their collective heads." His robot was looking like a dubious charred wreck. He wanted to give up and pretend he hadn't completely failed at it.

"I um. Maybe my tools are bad." he said, hopefully.

Barth looked over.

"You're doing very well," he said with sincerity. Barth was relaxed, and content.

He focused now on the bladed portion of the trashbot. The installation wasn't without its nicks, but overall the robot was already looking much more impressive.

"You really think so?" Zar asked, perking his ears a little and despite himself looking hopeful. Growing up no one had ever told him he did well at anything at all so hearing it he immediately wanted to assume it was sarcasm. Barth didn't seem to be being sarcastic though. He looked from Barth to his slightly beaten up little robot with its hastily added upgrades still smoking a little around the edges and wondered if it was possible to ever be proud of something that wasn't perfect.

It needed gears to run the scoop and following the instructions were complicated to say the least. But rather than give up, he narrowed his eyes and placed the fiddly bits as neatly as an amateur could.

Finally he powered on the robot again, expecting it to fizz and break down, but somehow, miraculously - it didn't. It wiggled its scoop approvingly at him and drove in a small victory lap.

He didn't know what to make of it. "Um. Well. It seems to be working? " he picked it up to inspect it and it ran its wheels on nothing. "Would you like it?" he asked. "I can't guarantee it won't go on fire and burn your dorm down though."

"I would be very pleased to use it. It's beautifully built. Whether it would come when I called is another matter- they can be very loyal."

Barth finished the final touches on his own, much simpler trashbot.

"Especially to their- OW," Barth withdrew his hand, sucking on it, and finishing, "creator."

His spun even more aggressively, chopping madly with the now-installed knife. Barth had given it a full-skirt of bumpers, so it would impale anything wherever it ran into it.

It was not the Slobot, or the Doom Buggy, but Barth thought it was very charming.
