Introduction

Have you ever wondered just what goes bump in the night? What sort of creepy crawlies hide in the shadows, just waiting for their chance to strike? Well, for starters, they wear the faces of men and women and look little different from you or I. They speak, they laugh, they dream just as any mortal does. However, that does not mean they should not be feared. For they are the Vampires, who feast on human flesh and are sustained by our blood.

~*~

There are many different kinds of Vampires, both in terms of siring and ability. The former is unchangeable no matter what you are, as a Queen will always be a Queen and a Consort always a Consort, so on and so forth. Ability, however, can be warped and changed for any but a Queen - as the Queens are the origin of said abilities. The stronger a Vampire's affinity with his or her Queen, the more powerful their abilities will be and the closer their supernatural skills will resemble that typically known for their given Clan. For a Queen, things are different, however. She will never have any affinity for another Clan, but she will have a much higher power threshold than those she or her Descendants can ever hope for. A Queen's power is increased in one of three ways - in age, in practice, or in absorption. Absorption is the phenomenon that occurs when one Queen slays another - when she drinks the blood and soul of her victim. No matter what happens, when one Queen slays another, the survivor will always be tempted to drink of her kill - and most are incapable of resisting this urge. If the killed Queen has no living female relatives, if she has few or no Descendants, her Clan becomes extinct and her murderer might also absorb some of that fallen Clan's abilities. - This paragraph will be moved and edited once a codex post is made. It was temporarily posted here for my benefit.

~*~

Our tale begins with a single Queen, not even a century old, whose Clan was recently destroyed due to a feud with another Clan. Believed to be dead by her enemies, she has the chance to start anew in a new nation. Fleeing from Europe to the Big Apple with the couple of Clanmates that managed to survive the battle, she must bring new life to her Clan's ashes. However, being a stranger in a big city puts her at a disadvantage. Will she be able to bring glory back to her kin? Or will she die in the attempt?

Codex

Queen
Sexes: Always Female
Aging: Queens age much more slowly than humans, usually taking one or two hundred years in order to reach maturity. Most live for a millenia, or more often, far less. The most commonly cited reasons for this are vampiric treachery, pregnancy and birth complications, murder by a supernatural or a hunter, and suicide. It is speculated that a Queen might be capable of living for far longer, but due to the dangers of vampire society, it is a question unlikely to be ever answered.
Importance: Queens are most often raised to be leaders of their respective clans, and are by far considered the most powerful, important, and yet vulnerable of all the vampires you will encounter. As the "Head Vampires", so to speak, their Descendents - or vampires turned from their bloodline - all know their oldest Queen as the source of their powers. The weaker a Clan's Queen, the weaker the Clan itself will be. A Queen, also sometimes referred to as a Blood Mother, is the only female vampire who can become pregnant and birth living children. Their offspring are always female, and unless they were to somehow do the borderline impossible and become pregnant from an ordinary human, their daughters will always be more Queens. However, pregnancy and childbirth is even more dangerous than it is for human women, so demand for skilled physicians for any given Clan is always high.

Consort
Sexes: Always Male
Aging: Consorts, unlike Queens, were once human beings. They seem at first to quit aging, but in reality, it is simply slowed to the same slow crawl that a Queen naturally endures. They are much less likely than Queens to last beyond a millenia, but otherwise vary in lifespan.
Importance: There are no natural-born male vampires for Origins to procreate with, and Origins cannot have children by themselves, so they must find exceptional human males to 'offer the gift' of vampirism. Depending on the values of the clan an Origin represents and her own personal tastes, she will seek out a human man with certain distinctive traits and make him her Consort. Consorts are formed when a human man's bloodstream is introduced to a strong mixture of a Queen's blood and saliva, most often through a deep kiss or an open wound. Their bodies will reform and contort themselves from the inside, changing the soon-to-be Consort into a stronger, hardier, being with a lesser aversion to the sun and a newfound obsession for their sire. 99.99% of the time, they are the only ones capable of successful reproduction with a Queen. Excluding the Queens themselves, Consorts are the most powerful and respected vampires in any Clan.

Daughter
Sexes: Always Female
Aging: Like Consorts, Daughters were once human beings. They seem at first to quit aging, but in reality, they age as Consorts and Queens do. Also like the former two, they rarely if ever live past a millenia.
Importance: When a Queen tries to turn a human woman into a 'Consort', she becomes the female equivalent - a Blood Daughter, or Daughter for short. They are always infertile, unable to bear living children. So instead of being used as a means of reproduction, they are most often valued as bodyguards, spies, or even Clan Soldiers - depending on their personalities and personal skills. Daughters are always turned based on merit - whether it be as a warrior, a doctor, or whatever other important talents there be, making them a necessity to any thriving clan. They cannot sire, nor can they birth Dhampirs.

Dhampir
Sexes: Can be either male or female.
Aging: Dhampirs lives four times as long as ordinary humans.
Importance: The unfortunate spawn of a Consort and human, or more rarely, a Queen and one lucky mortal. They do not suffer the same weaknesses to fire and sunlight that their betters might, but they are not blessed with their extraodinary power either. They are looked down upon as 'lesser' and 'incomplete' by most vampires, yet they are still held in higher regard than ordinary humans. Dhampirs are probably the most common type of vampire, kept around mainly as grunts, laborers, and minions of all sorts. They have a tendency to suffer from irrevokable madness, but whether this is genetic or due to their usually hostile enviornments is uncertain.

~*~

Clan: A group, or 'family', of Vampires. Sometimes called a 'Bloodline', it is used to track groups of Vampires by birth and by siring. Each Clan has its strengths and weaknesses, along with its own unique cultural dynamics.

Descendent: An individual turned or birthed by a Vampire.

Ability: A Clan's unique power, or for stronger Clans, powers. A Queen's abilities will usually embody the expected outcome - both in strength and weakness - a given Vampire's powers will reach given sufficient time and practice.

Absorption: The process in which one Queen devours the life energy of another Queen whom she has killed. A fraction of the victim's strength will be embued upon her murderer, and it is possible that said Queen might take on some of her powers - assuming the murdered does not have a still living family member. (read: another Queen that is related to her)

Dominion: A Clan's base of operations, or home turf. Somewhere where they are safest.

Sunlight: In the legends, vampires will turn to ash if exposed to sunlight. For a Queen, this isn't very far from the truth. If she stays out during the daylight for three consecutive hours, her blood will literally boil her to death from the inside out. If she is pregnant or has given birth, she can only spend an hour and a half in broad daylight before boiling to death. This is an extremely painful way to go and it places the entire Clan in jeapordy, and as a result, most Queens flat out avoid the sun altogether. Dhampirs never have this problem, however.

Bleeding: Queens and Consorts can take an extreme number of wounds before bleeding to death, but it still is actually possible. If you can drain more than enough before the blood causes their wounds to regenerate, they will die. For the most part, though, they are able to rejuvenate any small or moderate wounds as they bleed - healing up in mere seconds at least and minutes at most. Dhampirs are hardier than humans in this regard, but by far weaker than Consorts or Queens.

Suffocation: Believe it or not, they're all living creatures and they all need to breath. Anyone will die of suffocation if deprived of enough oxygen.

Starvation: If a Queen doesn't feed at least every other day, a Consort every three, and a Dhampir every seven, they will all shrivel up and die of starvation. It is highly encouraged for each to feed plenty more than this, but of course, this is the bare minimum expected.
