Rolling a 3: ALL DAMAGE HAS NO MODIFIER (ie: you don't need to subtract -6 ). You feel something brush against you, unsettling as it literally envelops you in a blanket of cold. You feel stronger but more distant, as if the battle around you is happening to someone else...

She was here, again. At this rate she could make a floor plan, she mused. This time, she was alert and moved slowly, sticking to the shadows and dusty, disused corners. Was everything here a threat? Hollandaise half expected the moth-worn sofa to rise and wrap her in faded floral print until she gave in. It was with a wary kind of detachment that she ventured out in the old house's hallway.

Considering the recent events that had just so recently befallen Ever, Zeke was taking Haunted House duty quite seriously. Just through the portal, and already his weapon was out, hazel eyes searching the dimness for any sign of movement not belonging to some bit of the house itself (hanging lamps were not supposed to swing on their own, but this was Halloween).

He moved slowly, cautiously, listening hard.

It was as he moved into the hall that he heard it--footsteps, soft, but moving towards him. Quietly, he dipped into a room to wait, back against the wall, and senses straining.

Sometimes, she thought, this house seemed full of strange creeple, of shadows that moved when they shouldn't and voices without source. Hollandaise found those creaks and house-born movements almost comforting, although they masked other, more dangerous sounds. And she thought she heard something. Something more than the whispers that tickled at the back of her mind. (Those were a little quieter here, in the house, instead of outside. She did not know why, but she was grateful.)

Something had moved. More than the creaky, nearly alive house - there was someone other than here here. Letting out a creaky hum, she moved down the hallway, poking her head into each room she passed. Hollandaise could've stayed in one place and waited until the house melted around her and she was back at school, but she was curious. And while curiosity may have killed the cat, she was flora, not feline. "Is someone there?"

Whatever else was there with him, it was definitely moving closer. Ezekiel pressed his back into the wall and held his breath, listening to those soft foot falls in the hall. A hum, the darker spread of shadows through the door, and then the creature itself. Maybe if he had waited, really looked at what had stuck their head through the door, he might not have been so rough, taken aback by the dainty nymph of a creature that had crossed his path.

Maybe.

He didn't. As a head came into view he was moving, snapping out with one hand to grab a hold of their hair(it didn't feel like hair...) to yank them into the room with a violent snap of his wrist.

As he let her(he thought it was female, in any case) he was adjusting his grip on the twin handles of his axes, advancing, before his eyes really had time to register what he was seeing. Not human, which was about all he need be concerned with.

Her curiosity ended with a creaking shriek as hands grabbed her hair, her branches, and twisted. Hollandaise's eyes watered and she went limp for a moment, hoping against hope that they would not break.

And then she was stumbling back, suddenly free. As her back hit the wall, her forearms automatically slapped against it too - to brace herself. Thin fingers scabbled at the cracks in the wall, one hand reaching up to touch her branches gingerly. They hurt: a small, burning ache, but had not snapped. Hollandaise stared, wide-eyed, at the man in front of her. She met his hazel-green eyes briefly. A reaper? There was something about white coats that seemed off-putting. His red hair was normal enough and he was, of course, taller than her. The twin axes were eyed with wariness only felt by trees who had heard stories of woodsmen. Hollandaise hissed in distrust.

But she paused, loathe to even try to attack despite his cruel hands. The whispers were muted in the house, no fog curled its way into her lungs and seared its icy words into her ears. Maybe he was just as startled as she. Still, she felt chilled. Something, a ghost, a fingertip of fear, brushed against her side and up over her like a cloak. Hollandaise tried to shake it off. This was going to be like her first time, she thought, all violence without reason and the warder tensed, waiting to see if he would strike.

She was small, dainty even, and covered in flowers and other flora. All this registered in the first few seconds as he advanced, arm rising up and ready for an attack. There was no immediate attack from the monster, but she hissed at him, lips drawing back from her teeth, and that was threatening enough to justify the downward sweep of the ax across that wood grain body.

It didn't matter what she was, or what she looked like. Looks could be deceiving, the second he dropped his guard was the second his opponent gained the upper hand, and he was not willing to do that.

Hollandaise cried out as the sharp metal of his axe skimmed down her arm. Everything seemed to hurt more than usual and her thin fingers clutched her arm. Honey-like blood seeped from the cut: an odd, golden red. Quickly, she moved around him, trying to put space between the two of them. As she turned, her leg shot out in a kick, woody shin connecting with his hip.

"The h-house is making you fight, isn't it?" Her voice was low and intense as she circled him warily. The gargoyle ghoul had beaten her black and blue and she did not relish the prospect of a repeat performance.

"The house?" Pale eyes flicked, up, to the walls, all around him before snapping back to the monster before him. As far as he could tell the house wasn't doing anything to him. So he shook his head, eating up that space between them with long-legged strides. "You're the enemy, and this is my job."

If it was any consolation, he didn't seem to be relishing the moment. Features were cold, indifferent even, as if he hadn't quite made up his mind yet about how he felt.

That wouldn't keep him from attack though. Duty was duty, and maybe he was feeling a little less merciful in that moment after the state Ever had left this house in.

"I-I'm not the enemy. I've never even seen you before!" Maybe the house was affecting his mind, warping him into believing her the enemy. Hollandaise hissed and stumbled back. Blood still trickled down her arm, and his axe had caught her again, pain blossoming on her hip.

Lurching forward, she raked her nails down his face. The warder had hoped to blind him momentarily, but misjudged. Marks would trail from his cheek to his neck instead. Breathing heavily, Hollandaise looked around wildly to see if she could run.

"You're a ******** creature made up of Fear," he snorted, brows dipping, as if this should have been obvious. It didn't matter if he'd ever encountered her before. It didn't matter if she had had nothing to do with hurting Ever, or any other hunter on deus. She was a monster, and there was no place for monsters in this world.

Of course now she was getting mad, or scared. Fighting back, with a rake of claws down the side of his face that brought his breath in a hiss, but didn't do any real damage. It would heal. Probably by the end of the night.

"Nothing personal," he growled, bringing one ax up to swinging it by the chain over his head. "But you're a blight, and you need to be eradicated." And he threw it at her, aiming for the center of her chest, before jerking it back by the chain upon impact.

His axe slammed into her chest, driving the wind from her, causing her to stumble. As the boil jerked it back, the edge sliced into her chest and Hollandaise shrieked. Blood welled from the cut, staining the front of her dress. This was different, this was not the house clouding minds... was it? 'Creature made of fear... blight.' What was he, then? Hollandaise caught herself against a small table, anxiety screaming along her veins.

Pressing her hand against her chest, her mouth trembled open. "What are you?" Suddenly, she knew this man hated her somehow. Wildly, vines shot out from her wrists, but they fell short, only just tapping along the strange boil's arms, tendrils not finding purchase agaist that white white coat, thorns dulled. Her eyes widened, frantically looking around the room, watching him, waiting for his next move.

Features were impassive to the shriek. Ezekiel wasn't overly emotional to begin with, and pained cries did not often move him. They were even more meaningless now, coming from her. A monster, something that, if given time, grow into the same sort of danger that kept sending hunters back to them broken and bleeding. "I'm a hunter."

Vines shot from the monster's hands, wrapping harmlessly around his wrist before falling away, useless. She was weak.

A hard slash cut through them as if they were nothing, then he was bearing down on her, weapons raised. "And you are our prey." Axes came down in a cross, hard and merciless.

She felt her vines fall away, the slash sending spikes of pain through her arms and chest. A hunter? The only hunters she knew of were from tales the Elders told or their times popping into the human world. Even now, her mind fuzzy with pain, she remembered them. Strange humans who carried weapons to kill deer and other animals. But she was not a deer, not an animal to be brought to slaughter. And he was different. Dizzy with pain, she tried to scoot back to the door, to some semblance of safety. Instead, her back met the unyielding wall and she struggled to push herself upright, a slow creak coming from her lips.

Desperate, her fingers felt around wildly for some door, or a weapon, feeling true alarm. But his axes came down again, and for one brief moment it felt as though they moved in slow motion. The bit into her shoulders, into her branches, into her leaves. She fell. No, no no nono. This pain was worst. Her vision blurred and she fell, curling into a ball with a scream.

Just a monster. He reminded himself, as she screamed, cowering away from him. If he'd been more empathetic he might have felt a pang of guilt at this point. Remorse, horror, disgust. Anything but the angry emptiness that predominated his being.

Lagertha was silent, for once, but he felt her hunger, her eagerness. He felt how much the thrill of battle excited her. Even if the fight was woefully one sided. Id didn't matter, not when she got to drink in such delicious Fear.

Stalking after her, he transferred both axes to one hand before bending to wrap his fingers around a handful of branches that made up her hair, and used that grip like a handle to haul her back to her feet. Off her feet. It didn't feel like she weigh hardly anything, though he supposed that was his weapon's influence. Against other hunters it was hard to notice the added strength. Here and now, it was overly apparent.

Pale eyes were pitiless as he stared down into her face, features coldly neutral. She was weak, hardly a threat, but his mind kept flashing back to Ever's pale face in the ICU. Zeke wasn't going to give her the chance to get stronger. He'd just kill her now, and it'd be one less monster they'd have to worry about later.

Without warning he jerked her forward, then slammed her head into the wall.

She felt very, very light for a moment, then something pulled her down. Gravity sat upon her like ricks in her lungs, rattling around as she breathed, holding her to a bed. A bed - she had dissipated. The hunter, the memory of him was still clear, his merciless eyes.

Slowly, her trembling fingers reached up to gingerly touch her branches, to stroke at her leaves. She was all there, her branches grown back, no pulsing pain streaking down her arms. Inhaling sharply, she folded her hands to her unblemished chest. Hollandaise curled into herself and, ignoring the nurse that hovered nearby, began to cry.
