Magical Creature Basics and Information (Must Read)

So you wanna be a Magical Creature? Well, here are a few things to know about being a Magical Creature at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

First off, be sure to read the Guild Rules. You need to do so before you can make a character in the guild.

While you’re creating your Magical Creature be sure to read the Foreword on Profile Skeletons and make sure to use the correct form, depending on the type of creature you want to make.

Also, some magical creatures have canon characters you can choose from, as long as no one else is using them already.

Some magical creatures travel or live in groups and possess a heirarchy. The leader of each of these groups must either be a crew memeber, or receive special permission from the Magical Creatures Manager Cara MiaKitty. Please PM her if you are interested in having a leadership position.

Interested in being a student, a professor, or a Hogsmeade shop owner as well as a magical creature? Be a More-Than-Average character. For more information, you should read this.

Now that your profile is done, you need to wait for it to be approved, if you wait three days and it has yet to be approved, please contact the Magical Creatures Profiles Manager, Cara MiaKitty. You will know if your profile has been looked at depending on the title of the thread. Also be sure to contact Magical Creatures Profiles Manager with any questions you might have.

So there you go! That's the basic info you need to know on making a Magical Creature at Hogwarts!

Contact the Magical Creatures Profiles Manager, Cara MiaKitty. Depending on the creature, she may be able to work with you to alter the existing base skeleton to make your creature. Some less popular creature types do not have a skeleton at present, but that can be changed!

Foreword on Profile Skeletons

All possible magical creatures have been given a profile skeleton. You must use the right skeleton for the creature you're applying for. If you feel that the skeleton is lacking in an aspect and it needs something added or if you feel we should add a creature to the list, contact the Magical Creatures Manager.

For creatures that are not be allowed in the castle, they can be brought in as a demo by the professors. Professors, why not send a message to the creature's owner and ask them to have their creature displayed in your classrooms? This is also a commonsense privilege.

We are pretty strict about the way a profile skeleton looks. Try to make it pretty, if you can. It's not required, but it's nice to see smile . Make sure you follow all the instructions in the parenthesis while you're putting your skeleton together and include all the information we ask for (if you want to spruce it up, feel free). Remove the parenthesis and everything in between them when you're done, please.

The crew reserves the right to deny or accept anybody. Please make sure you follow the rules when applying.

Post the profile as your own thread in the Magical Creature Profiles subforum with your character's name as the title. The crew will try very hard to get you accepted within a day or two. If it's been three days and you still haven't been accepted, PM the Magical Creatures Manager the link and they will check it out.

Acromantula Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

The Acromantula are a species of giant spider, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo where it inhabits dense jungle. Acromantulas are believed to be a wizard-bred species, designed to guard dwellings or treasure hoards, and were first created before the Ban on Experimental Breeding in 1965. These giant spiders, with a taste for human flesh, were first spotted in 1794.

Acromantulas tend to reside in jungles and heavily forested areas, and their webs are large and dome-shaped.

Acromantula Rules

+ Must be in the Forbidden Forest
+ Must try to protect its home nest
+ Cannot eat other characters without their consent first
+ Must stay within the boundaries of the Forbidden Forest
+ Must be hostile towards other creatures
+ Typically live in a nest with other Acromantula and are loyal to the nest and its leader.

You are welcome and encouraged to create your own original characters. But, why get rid of the old, when they're still around? These Acromantula(s) are available to take:

Mosag: a female Acromantula, and the wife of Aragog. Sometime before 1993, Mosag gave birth to hundreds of baby acromantulas and co-founded the acromantula colony located in the Forbidden Forest near Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her husband died later in 1997. Their colony and descendants took part in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.

Boggart Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A shape-shifting creature that takes on the form of the viewer's worst fear. Because of their shape-shifting ability, no one knows what a boggart looks like when it is alone, as it instantly changes when you first see it.

Boggart Rules

+ Found in places that are dark, such as in wardrobes, the gap beneath beds, and the cupboards under sinks and desks. On at least one occasion, a boggart was found hiding in a grandfather clock.
+ Must take form of the person's fear (whenever a person is facing a boggart at Hogwarts, they must mention their fear in at least one post during their encounter)
+ Can be found anywhere
+ Allowed to move from one dark spot to another as long as no one is around/takes notice
+ Not allowed to speak
+ Must be forced to change by the Riddikulus spell (if casted by the person it is facing)
+ After a few hits of the Riddikulus spell, must return to the safety of darkness

Centaur Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A centaur is a magical creature whose head, torso and arms appear to be human and are joined to a horse's body. However, they are their own species, and are not any kind of half-breed. Despite being highly intelligent, centaurs are classified as Beasts by the Ministry of Magic, at their own request, as they were unhappy at having to share Being status with hags and vampires.

Dementor Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A Dementor is a Dark creature, considered one of the foulest to inhabit the world. Dementors feed off human happiness, and thus cause depression and despair to anyone near them. They can also consume a person's soul, leaving their victims in a permanent vegetative state, and thus are often referred to as "soul-sucking fiends" and are known to leave a person as an "empty-shell."

After the end of the Second Wizarding War in 1998, the Ministry was reformed, and Minister for Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt ensured that they were not used by the government again.

Dementor Rules

+ Must be in the Forbidden Forest
+ Cannot harm other characters without their permission
+ Are blind
+ Must be repelled by the Patronus spell
+ Can also not distinguish between humans and animals very easily
+ Dementor's Kiss may only be used with permission from the other character
+ Capable of physical labor
+ May not speak

Ghost Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A ghost is the disembodied spirit of a once living wizard or witch. Many ghosts take up residence within Hogwarts Castle. These fleshless spirits were either afraid of death or have some extraordinarily strong connection to the locations they haunt.

In their paranormal state, ghosts are unable to cause much physical influence. They are visible, and appear as a greyish-silver apparition of their former (living) selves. They may not touch or physically move objects, however in passing through an object, they may impart a sensation of icy coldness. Ghosts are either capable of, or pretend to be capable of, almost being able to taste rotten food.

Ghost Rules

+ Must stay on Hogwarts grounds
+ Can speak to students
+ Must specify if it's a poltergeist or ghost; poltergeists are capable of harming characters and ghosts are usually passive
+ Poltergeists must not cause too much physical harm to characters and must always ask before doing so
+ Can float through walls
+ Cannot be destroyed
+ Are unable to move beyond the veil, and are forever trapped in the world of living as intangible beings
+ Ministry of Magic has some control over ghosts

House and Famous Hogwarts Ghosts

Gryffindor ~ Nearly Headless Nick: He is known as a friendly ghost who was nearly beheaded, but the job was poorly executed which was how he retained the nickname of "Nearly Headless Nick" He prefers to be addressed as "Sir Nicholas." His real name is Sir Nicholas De Mimsy-Porpington ((Taken by Diamond Wales))

Hufflepuff ~ Fat Friar: He is known for being friendly and jolly to all. He also frequently suggests that Peeves should have a second chance, whether or not he deserves it.

Ravenclaw ~ Grey Lady: Also known as Helena Ravenclaw. She was loved by the Bloody Baron, but she did not love him. She also stole her mother's diadem and hid it in Albania. The Baron found her, and killed her, while she refused to go with him.

Slytherin ~ Bloody Baron: He is well known for being extremely unsocial and many students are known to be slightly afraid of him. The Baron is also the only one who can control Peeves.

Peeves the Poltergeist: a poltergeist at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, since c. 993. Fond of mischief and chaos, he is a constant pain to the school and its inhabitants, especially Argus Filch, the caretaker. The only one who is able to control him is the Bloody Baron. (RP example Required, and may be on a trial bases to start.) (( Taken by Diamond Wales ))

Myrtle (Moaning Myrtle): a muggle-born witch who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Ravenclaw house. She was killed in 1943 by Salazar Slytherin's Basilisk, under Tom Riddle's orders. Now, she is a ghost who haunts the second floor girl's bathroom (and occasionally other bathroom facilities) at Hogwarts.

Professor Cuthbert Binns: Professor Cuthbert Binns was a wizard and History of Magic professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He taught until a very old age, when he fell asleep in the staff room and died in slumber. Now, he is a ghost who continued to teach, droning on about various Goblin Rebellions and Giant Wars to bored, sleeping students.

Giant Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A giant is a very large humanoid which can potentially grow to approximately twenty five feet tall and appear to be a large human. Some may appear as large and hairy humanoids, while others resemble humongous-sized people, and some may even have bestial features (i.e. protuding sharp molars). A powerful and nearly unstoppable race, giants generally aggregate themselves in tribes since their numbers have greatly dwindled in recent centuries. A giant tribe is led by the strongest giant, known as the Gurg.

Giant Rules

Giant Squid Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

The Giant Squid was a creature that lived in the Black Lake. Despite the generalised fear of it, the Giant Squid was actually very docile and helpful to the students of Hogwarts, such as when Dennis Creevey fell into the Lake, and he was immediately pushed safely back into the boat. The squid was also known to have played with students, such as when Fred Weasley, George Weasley and Lee Jordan tickled its tentacles as it was lying part way out of the lake, and to have accepted food from students, such as when it received toast from Hermione Granger.

A gnome, or garden gnome is a magical creature commonly known to infest the gardens of wizarding households, the correct taxonomical name for which is purportedly Gernumbli gardensi, or sometimes referred to as Gernumblies. Hippogriff Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A Hippogriff is a magical creature that has the front legs, wings, and head of a giant eagle and the body, hind legs and tail of a horse. It is very similar to another mythical creature, the Griffin, with the horse rear replacing the lion rear. Hippogriffs have cruel, steel-coloured beaks and large, brilliantly orange eyes. The talons on their front legs are half a foot long and appear deadly.

The breeding of fancy Hippogriffs is an established wizarding career, with known breeders including Newton Scamander's mother. Images of said fancy Hippogriffs are sometimes put onto calendars.

Hippogriff Etiquette

When Humans approach Hippogriffs, a proper etiquette must be maintained to avoid danger. Hippogriffs are intensely proud creatures, and an individual must show proper respect by bowing to them, and waiting for them to bow in return before approaching. Eye contact should be maintained at all times, without a single blink. The Hippogriff should be allowed to make the first move as this is polite. If offended, it may attack. Hippogriffs are tameable, but only by experts in their care (such as Rubeus Hagrid, Care of Magical Creatures Professor and Gamekeeper at Hogwarts).

Although proud, Hippogriffs can also be fiercely loyal and protective of those who have earned their trust, as demonstrated by Buckbeak on at least two occasions; when he attacked Severus Snape in defence of Harry Potter during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and again when he led Hogwarts' Thestrals in attacking Voldemort's giants during the Battle of Hogwarts.

It should be noted that if your character improperly approaches or insults a Hippogriff, they are essentially required by canon to attack your character. By antagonizing the creature, you are granting permission to be attacked. That said, Hippogriff characters are not allowed to seriously injure any character without explicit permission and a plot request.

Hippogriff Rules

+ Must be in the Forbidden Forest unless invited to join a CoMC lesson or with special permission to post on school grounds
+ Are very proud creatures
+ Will react violently when not approached properly or insulted

House-Elf Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

A house-elf is a magical creature which is devoted and loyal to the one designated as their master. They serve wizards and witches, and must do everything that their masters command unless they are freed.

A veritable legion of house-elves are enlisted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They work the kitchens, preparing feasts for the entire school. They also move trunks and baggage to and from rooms, clean dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well. In 1994, they became angry with Hermione Granger as she made attempts to free them. During the Battle of Hogwarts, the house-elves fought against the Death Eaters with Kreacher leading them. They defended their masters by using kitchen knives to stab at the attackers' ankles.

House-Elf Rules

+ They cook the food for the meals of the day
+ They must work and live in the kitchens underneath the Great Hall

Kreacher: Kreacher was an aged house-elf who served the House of Black with fanatical loyalty for most of his life, until he was left to Harry Potter upon the death of Sirius Black in 1996. He was particularly fond of "his mistress" Walburga Black, who died in 1985, but whose portrait still shrieks orders from the wall in the front hall of the Black house. After Mrs. Black's death, Kreacher let the home fall into disarray, doing little, if any, cleaning. He was also fiercely loyal to Regulus Black, for whom he fought in the Battle of Hogwarts along with many other house-elves.

Winky: Winky was a female House-elf in the employment of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, who formerly served the Crouch family.

Leprechaun Profile Skeleton

Basic Information

The Leprechaun, sometimes known as the Clauricorn, is a mischievous magical creature, although it is not malicious. They have a reputation as pranksters, but have never inflicted lasting damage on a Human. Native only to Ireland, they are fully sentient and capable of speech but have never requested the Ministry of Magic to reclassify them as Beings. Green in colour, the Leprechaun reaches a height of around six inches, and normally wear clothing made out of leaves. Leprechauns main diet consists of vegetation, primarily leaves.

Leprechauns live in forests and wooded areas, and they enjoy attracting Muggle attention to themselves.

Leprechaun Rules

+ Must be on Hogwarts grounds, especially near, around, or in the Forbidden Forest
+ Cannot harm other characters without their permission
+ Welcomed to prank characters with permission
+ Interacting with characters should be limited, but not disallowed
+ Capable of speaking
