It seemed that Halloween classes - and indeed, the holiday itself - often centered around spices that carried strong, rich aromas. They were pleasant in small doses, but Bastion had just recovered from being inundated with Sinnamon and his nose had not yet managed to forget the scent of it all. When he arrived at the class to create something pumpkin spice flavored, the smell of the spice mixed with the hint of sinnamon still on him sent him reeling with dismay. This was going to be another difficult challenge, if only because Bastion tired easily of breathing with his mouth, and did not want to let these classes ruin his opinion of the spices they dealt with. After all, they were lovely - in moderation!

But this class did not deal with moderation.

He found himself in front of a variety of goods. Not all of them were edible - and that was purposeful. Apparently, pumpkin spice scent was commonly added to almost anything that could be used, in this holiday season. Health products, food, drink, paper, and other items of consequence. He would have been more amused, if his eyes did not sting with the strength of the scent.

He picked up a liquid, quickly reading it as a facial treatment. It was clear and odorless, and promised to clean the skin with no residue, and no drying out. This was before any kind of pumpkin spice scent was added, however - so who could tell if that would change it's promise for the better, or for the worse.

If he was going to be in charge of creating a mix for this liquid, he was going to put as little of the offending spice in it as possible. He dropped the pumpkin spice into the small container, flake by flake. He crumbled each flake tenderly in his hands, so that a fine sprinkling of the scented stuff fell on it's surface. Then he used a thin stirrer to mix them together, and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, he still believed that adding anything to a chemical based substance would in fact change the composition, and therefore helpful use, of said substance. If someone put this on their face, there was no guarantee they would not have any residue remaining. In fact, he was sure there would be quite a lot of pumpkin spice residue on their face, now.

He, however, was not in charge of production, so he carried on with as minimum spice as possible, until he could barely smell it coming from the liquid.

That was good enough.

Now it was time for the professor to test his work, and offer her opinion on it. He capped the bottle, and handed it over to her quickly. "I wish to preface this examination with the following; I do not find this method of adding scent to anything efficient. Perhaps if we had an artificially created oil of some kind, it would have worked better, but. As it stands, this facial cleanser is no longer as effective as it was when it was odorless, in my opinion. Still, I hope it meets your expectations, and that it is successful nonetheless."

She uncapped it and smelled the scent - he could tell she had to try extra hard to get any scent out of it, and despite that being a negative on his score, he was quite proud of that. Subtlety was a wonderful trait.

She placed some on her cheek, and sure enough there was residue of the spice left behind. It seemed a little discolored, and the professor seemed unsatisfied.

Well, he did warn her!
