                                                          You hear the door slam
And realize there's nowhere left to run
                                                          You feel the cold hand
And wonder if you'll ever see the sun
                                                          You close your eyes

Cian arrived and located a seat almost to the back. He was really attentive as the subject intregied him he was ready for note taking. Though once the math was on the board Cian frowned. He wasnt terrible at math. He simply disliked it. He wrote it down and hastily added what the kid in the blue robes was saying. He seemed to know what he was talking about. He could be totally wrong but Cian wouldn't be none the wiser. Ugh why was there math problems. He had hoped magic didnt need it but alas there was no escaping the notorious X=thing. Well perhaps he get to do some spells today.

And hope that this is just imagination

Katya had read through the first couple chapters of her Transfiguration book, as she hoped to come into class and look like a complete idiot, which was kinda how she was feeling at this point. It hadn't helped that any time a professor asked a question others were faster on the draw than she, and truth be told, she was a little tongue-tied anyway. Transfiguration required a goodly knowledge of math, and Katya had always been good with math. Still, there was an opening here. Hesitantly, she raised her hand, and said, "Um, Transfiguration is difficult because, unlike a Charm, you're actually changing what a subject is. You're changing reality to the way you want it."

Still full from lunch, Isolde dragged her heels across the halls until she found the Transfigurations classroom. It was wide and spacious, allowed plenty of room to practice spell casting. Too bad that won't be happening for a while. She wasn't naive enough to think she'd get to practice any magic on her first day of classes. Several students were already gathered in their seats; was there assigned seating? She checked the desktops for name tags, and upon finding none, took the first seat available. It was next to a pair of Hufflepuffs, the Conri-Dechering twins, if she remembered the name correctly. She smiled and waved a little awkwardly when she dropped into the seat beside them. As the professor concluded his lecture, Iso buried her nose in her textbook and thumbed through the pages trying to draw as little attention to herself as possible. The answer was simple, and mostly already given by her peers, but more than anything, she was trying to avoid setting a precedent. She made that mistake with her tutors. Set expectations too high too early and you're only doomed to fail. She was not making that mistake again.

Edric shuffled into the classroom and perched himself near the edge of the room. There were so many young professors in the school, which was weird, considering how old witches and wizards live to be. The teachers in his muggle school were always ancient, with wrinkles and liver spots and gray hair. Magic must have a better effect at making people look young than makeup. If he ever found any, he'd have to send some to Joi. She'd probably enjoy it more than anyone. Unlike the other classes, no introductions were necessary. Edric was grateful for the chance to lean back in his seat and let the others do the answering, they seemed to know what they were talking about. He, on the other hand, did not.

On The Board:

Basics of Transfiguration

What is Transfiguration?
Transfiguration is, at it's most basic, transforming one object into another. This is usually accomplished by magical means. However, it is not simply changing something's appearance into something else's, it is actually changing the very item into the its intended target. This very act changes its structure even down to the molecular level, so that when you transfigure a bird into a cup, you are taking that bird and turning it into a cup on an atomic level.

What kinds of Transfiguration are there?
There are actually four different branches of Transfiguration: Transformation, Vanishment, Conjuration, and Untransfiguration. All four of these branches of transfiguration you work with if you wish to master this branch of magic, but you may not see all four during your course of study at Hogwarts.

What is Transformation?
Transformation is at its core turning one object into another. This is the most basic form of transfiguration. There are three different subcategories of transformation known as Human Transfiguration, Switching, and Trans-Species. Human transfiguration however is the most difficult form of Transformation.

What is Vanishment?
Vanishment is the act of taking an object and willing it out of existence. The Vanished item will simply cease to be, and instead you will have nothing. As such, this is the most difficult form of transfiguration you will probably encounter on your OWLs.

What is Conjuration?
Conjuration is the act of bringing things into existence. This is much harder to do than simply willing something to appear. This area of Transfiguration you will learn about in your NEWT-level class should you get that far.

What is Untransfiguration?
Untransfiguration is the act of reversing a transfiguration. The branch is considered both Transfiguration as well as a counter-spell. This branch is generally the very first one encountered when you are learning the subject of Transfiguration

Rick leaned against the desk as he waited for students to file in. He vaguely wondered sometimes if he ever looked as small as the first years in this class, but dismissed this idea and instead decided to focus instead on the class at hand. When the students all filed into the classroom, he checked the time and closed the door with a flick of his wand before turning to address the first years. "Hello, and welcome to Transfiguration. I'm your professor Richard Drage. For those of you wondering if there is going to be some form of spellcasting right off the bat in this class, that would be a yes, and a no. Yes, because you will be casting spells in this lesson, and no, since there will only be one spell you will learn today. However, this spell is probably the most important one you will learn in your entire study of the subject, so that would be why it is the very first one you learn about today."

He turned to the board and gestured to it, already well aware of the brief overview written upon it. "Transfiguration, by its very nature, is one of the most, if not the most, difficult disciplines of magic there is. We are taking an object and changing it fundamentally at the molecular level. This in itself makes the practice at once dangerous as well as complex, however is probably one of the very rewarding branches of magic there is in my opinion. After all, you can look at something you've transfigured and know that you've managed to succeed or fail, and by itself is a very rewarding feeling." He then turned back to the board and wrote something underneath his notes and pointed it out for people to see.

                                                Professor Drage

"This, by the way, is one of the reasons why transfiguration is so difficult. Yes, it is a mathematical equation, one that is applied every time you try and cast a transfiguration spell. Can anyone enlighten me as to why that is?" He crossed his arms and waited, taking a deep breath and hoping he hadn't confused the heck out of the first years yet. It would be his luck, wouldn't it? To be the first professor in Hogwarts history to basically make a mess of his first lesson and the students learned nothing? He hoped not.

Unlike some of her other classes, this one immediately made her feel like her brain was going to get a workout. Rina had seated herself somewhere around middle-front, as she normally did, and her eyes traveled over the board scrutinously. She was in the middle of reading all of the notes about Transfiguration when the professor called attention to the equation on the board.

Rina's head tilted as she recalled learning a little about mathematical equations from her homeschooling before. Her hand rose up slowly. "You have to apply the equation every time because those are variables.. they are all things that have to happen for transfiguration to work, and they happen differently each time... which can change the result of your transfiguration.." At least, that's what made sense to her. It felt kind of nice to work her brain a little bit!

Rhona Finnea Dubhach
Halfblood | First Year | Gryffindor
Location: Transfiguration Class | Company: Classmates | Mood: Nervous

Rhona had actually been pretty excited for this class. Transfiguration, the ability to change one thing into another seemed like a very interesting type of magic. The possibilities were almost endless, not to mention she had heard something about the ability to turn yourself into an animal as well.

But then her mind blanked out at the sudden appearance of maths on the board. From what she'd heard, maths and magic were very separate things and now here they were coming together like some kind horrible monster. She was horrible at these types of things and on top of that the Professor had just said transfiguration was one of the hardest types of magic to learn. Rhona could not see herself doing well in this class.

When another girl, a Hufflepuff from the appearance of her robes, spoke up with an answer she felt a bit of relief. What she was saying generally made some sort of sense, but more importantly the Professor had someone who could answer his questions and wouldn't have to resort on calling on other students instead. Most of the time it didn't bother her too much to not know the answer right away, but maths had always been different. Most students seemed to get it but she didn't. Maybe even couldn't.

OoC:

Compassionate She feels a lot of compassion for other people, and especially animals when they are suffering. This leads to her wanting to do something about it or a very strong opinion towards the situation.
Independent Already used to responsibility and going off with her brother quite often already in early life, Rhona has a strong sense of self-independence.
Dependable She likes being seen as a responsible person who can be trusted, and that includes whatever someone may ask her to do.
Stubborn When she thinks she's right and gets into an argument with someone, she won't back down very easily. If someone tells her no, she very often resists. Commonly, this comes from her not liking being treated like and kid and she feels like people don't respect her opinions.
Stingy She really doesn't do sharing, no matter what it is. Having a twin and sharing so many things in their lives made her very protective of what little she could completely call her own.
Energetic She seems to have an almost bottomless source of energy to draw from, mostly when working on something she's interested in. But when she crashes, she crashes hard.

♪♫ Sonora Li
first year || Ravenclaw || halfblood
_______________

Transfiguration was another subject Sonora had little in the way of anecdotes to prepare her for. She'd read the first part of the textbook this morning, but nothing prepared her for the letters Professor Drage wrote on the board and called a mathematical equation. This is math? I thought math involved numbers... She considered herself half-decent at math--it definitely wasn't her favorite subject in primary school, but it was do-able and her dad always insisted that everyone could do basic math.

But a peek at the textbook and her jottings in it at least made the equation less foreign. Oh it's this confusing thing. She'd written down what each letter represented, even if she didn't understand half of what was going on with said letters.

Back to the question. Why was this equation applied every time you try to cast a transfiguration spell?

Slowly, she raised her hand. It would be okay if she was wrong, she figured. Professor Darge seemed very fair, and he probably asked only to set up his next point. "I'm not sure what most of the letters really mean, but t represents the transfiguration right? I'm guessing how successful the transfiguration is? So all the other things are factors that go into making that spell happen." She glanced down at the textbook. "So...like uhm…w represents the wand power? Or z is...some number representation about how the spell incantation is used?"

Eiji Clarke
1st Year | Half-Blood | Hufflepuff

Eiji entered the class with a nervouse smile. He really hoped he's do well. He'd feel awful if he failed his mother's mastery. I know it'd look horrible if I, a child of a Transfiguration Master, failed transfiguration class. Eiji thought glumly as he made his way to a seat. He flopped into one near thr front of the class and pouted. He grudgingly pulled out his book, ink, sugar quills, parchment and wand. He absently wrote down the overview and what the professor was saying. Eiji even absently wrote down the equation.

Eiji froze for a moment and stared at the equation. He actually recognized it! Eiji face split in a huge grin. Maybe I won't embarrass my mum after all! Eiji thought. Eiji shot out of his seat with his hand waving frantically in the air. "Professor! I know what that is! Its the equation for all transfiguration spells." Eiji exclaimed."If I remember my mum's lectures right... t stands for the actual transfiguration, a is weight, w is for magic power given to the spell, c is for concentration. I think v is attitude behind the spell. But I can never remember what z is though." Eiji pouted as he said that last bit then flopped back into his seat.

▬▬"Just as there are two sides to every story, there are two sides to every person. " ▬▬

Vespera looked at the board and instantly hated this class. The professor had written an equation on the board that did not make a single bit of sense. She knew that the two sides had to balance out, but wasn't sure what any of the letters meant. Should they be replaced by numbers? by thoughts? Vespera was clueless. She wrote the equation down in her notes and drew a question mark next to it. She heard the others answer, but she didn't know if they were right. She complained inwardly, 'I thought I was done with math when I left muggle school.
