The Primeval History

I. The Book of Job is obviously connected to ancient history.

A. The period of Job’s life overlaps the 3rd and 4th centuries after the Flood.

1. The events of Babel would have taken place sometime early in the 2nd or 3rd century.

2. The events probably occurred in the years before Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees with his father Terah to go to Haran.

3. The spreading system of pagan pantheism does not yet appear to have infiltrated the culture around Job or his friends.

The Scientific Insights


I. The Book of Job cites basic principles of science as the men are speaking.

A. There are a number of references that identify the behavior of fluid mechanics.

1. The fact that air and water have a known weight and function within laws.

a. Job 28:25 — To establish a weight for the wind, And apportion the waters by measure.

b. Job 28:26 — When He made a law for the rain….

c. Job 26:8 — He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it.

d. Job 37:6 — For He says to the snow, Fall on the earth; Likewise to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.

e. Job 37:16 — Do you know how the clouds are balanced….

The Great Experiment


I. The Book of Job begins with a description of Job and his family.

A. Job is stated to be “perfect” and “upright” by God Himself (Job 1:1; Job 1:8; Job 2:3).

1. The Hebrew word for “perfect” is Tam = “complete” or “upright.”

a. Tam is used 13 times, mostly in the book of Job.

b. Jacob is known as a “perfect” man (Genesis 25:27).

c. Psalm 37:37 — Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

d. Psalm 64:4 — That they may shoot in secret at the perfect suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
