Professor of DADA │ Muggleborn │ Haitian

Fanchon sat in her very comfortable chair, stroking Jacques, her cat, curled up in her lap, as though she were a Bond villain, and gave the room one final once over. She had enough tables and chairs to fit everyone, she'd made sure the room was spotless, in case anyone had any dust allergies, and she'd tried to make it.... if not quite welcoming, at least slightly less intimidating, although that was a bit difficult when the decor of the room literally included a giant skeleton of some magical beast suspended above the class. Ah well. They'd have to get used to Hogwarts's quirks at some point, and DADA was a notoriously challenging class, although not quite to the level of say, Transfiguration or Potions. However, it was extremely important, and if she had her way, she'd make it mandatory for all seven years. Alas, she could not have her way, so she only had five years to drill as much knowledge as possible through their hairy little heads. If she could make sure all of them could cast a proper shield charm, patronus, disarm someone, and defeat a boggart, she'd be happy. It would raise their life expectancy significantly. As the fourth years filtered into the room, she observed them stoically, not rising from her seat (and disturbing Jacques' nap) until everyone had taken their seats and were (mostly) quiet. "Bon apremidi. Good afternoon," she translated calmly, confident that her accent, while strong, was not an excuse for them to not listen. "I am Fanchon Cohen, and I am responsible for ensuring that all of you can recognize dark magic, and properly defend yourselves against it. My rules are written on the board. Follow them, don't follow them, it's your choice. This class is largely about choices. I'm here to demonstrate to you how to make good ones." Fanchon scanned the class for a moment, before raising her wand. "Lustro circulus." A ring of crimson and gold fire encircled the front of the room. "You all should have learned how to end a spell last year. Ten house points to whoever can end this one."

Saio’s week was going generally well. Though it had been busy getting back into the swing of things it hadn’t been bad. Walking into defense she was surprised to see a new professor. She had an accent but it wasn’t hard to understand. Taking her things out as class started, the Hufflepuff jotted down what needed to be jotted down. Watching as Professor Cohen created a ring of crimson and gold fire encircled the front of the room, Saio wondered what that spell was meant for.

When the class was asked for someone to end the spell she’d created, the Hufflepuff took a breath. “I’ll try it.” Saio said as she stood from her seat. Taking her wand out of her robes she made her wand movement as she said, “Finite Incantatem.” With her wand pointed at the ring of fire causing it to fizzle out and disappear. Smiling Saio took her seat again and set her wand down.

Richard’s week was almost done and he was looking forward to the weekend. Strolling into defense he found a seat in the back. He wasn’t the best with spells and honestly the skull in the room was giving him creepy vibes. Waiting for class to start he laid his head on the desk. His favourite class was after dinner and he really wanted to get to dinner so he could be one step closer to it. Hearing their new professor speak, Richard looked up and took out his books.

He got the French background but didn’t honestly care. Truth was he never really was able to pick up French past hello and my name is. Richard glanced at the rules but didn’t particularly care. He watched as Professor Cohen created a ring of fire. When asked for someone to end the spell, a Hufflepuff classmate (Saio he believed her name was) attempted to end the spell. She seemed successful which only meant that Hufflepuff would receive ten points.

Fanchon sat on top of her desk, rather casually, and didn't feel it was inappropriate, seeing how this lesson involved hexes, which technically, the students weren't even allowed to be casting. They only learned this spell because the rest of the world was nowhere near so gentle. The classroom itself appeared to be devoid of anything, aside from her desk, herself, and her cat. The board seemed to have vanished, as had the windows, desks, and chairs.

"Bon apremidi," she greeted the students as they entered. "I'm not quite allowed to hex you, so this is my solution to help you still learn how to deflect them. I've cast a bedazzling hex on nearly everything in this room, as you can see, and it's going to take all of you to collectively reveal everything, especially if you would like to sit down at some point."

The Haitian slid nimbly off her desk and approached where the board ought to have been, wand aloft, opposite hand outstretched, palm facing outward. "SAL-vee-oh HEK-see-uh," she cast calmly, and a watery sort of haze washed over immediate area, revealing the blackboard. "Just like that. Proceed."

Fanchon sat at her desk, talking with two older students, a Ravenclaw boy and a Hufflepuff girl, one of whom was petting a napping Jacques, as the fourth years came in. After another moment or so she stood up and strode to the front, the two following her. "Bon apremidi, everyone. Today you will be learning the Tongue-Tying Charm, which is technically a curse," she smirked a little. "The purpose of the spell is to prevent the target from speaking, which, as you can imagine, can be very useful when someone is attempting to attack you. However, it is not a terribly advanced spell, and you may find the Silencing Charm more effective. But it's good in a pinch." The Haitian nodded to the two students on either side of her. "This is Quentin and Therese, who volunteered to help us today." She looked to the Hufflepuff. "Therese?"

The dark-haired girl stepped towards her, drawing her wand. "Petrifi-,"

"Mimble wimble," Fanchon said clearly, moving her wand in a complex looping form:

The girl immediately went silent, a hand flying up to her mouth out of instinct, and after a few moments, coughed a little as she regained the ability to speak.

"The light should be blue, as you just saw," the professor continued, "And the wand movement is the hardest thing to master. Some side effects of the spell can include stammering and occasionally retching, but it shouldn't cause any undue harm. Two lines please; the only people you should be directing this at are my two volunteers."

Gavin swept through the room and into a seat near the front, where he was most bound to come across his Ravenclaw friends when they entered the room. The professors cat was purring on the desk, a pair of older students had been waiting with the professor until the class started. She began with something that must have been 'good afternoon' and jumped right into the days lesson. He copied notes from his textbook and practiced the wand motions half a dozen times before filing in line. Though he had seen Quentin once or twice in the common room, he'd never actually spoken to the older boy before. It felt weird to practice on an older student instead of one of his classmates. Gavin's turn was quickly coming and when it did, he nodded to the older boy and held his wand at the ready. ”Mimble wimble!” he cut his wand in tight circles and let loose a jet of blue before Quentin could finish. It hit the older boy and he took a step back, frowning. And Gavin sat down at his desk wondering if the upperclassmen were holding back.

Skylar hurried into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. It was her first class of the day, only have this one and Astronomy on Thursdays. She enjoyed the time off, using it to catch up on assignments and get in some extra practice time in the music room. She had been working hard with her cello, and was even using the piano in the music room to practice as well. Thankfully, she was getting better at keeping track of time so she wasn't late to her class today. Sitting down in her seat, Sky looked up to the front as the professor spoke, going over the general rules of the classroom. She remembered them from last year as well, and was pretty good at staying out of trouble, so she didn't think she would have any issues. Next, the professor did something odd. Well, she usually started the class with something like this. She was a very surprising woman, Skylar thought, always doing something she didn't expect. Regardless, the professor cast a spell she hadn't heard of before, a ring of golden fire circling the front of the room. Professor Cohen called for someone to put the fire out. Skylar knew the spell she was wanting, but hesitated. Should she go for it? Sky was feeling a need to prove herself, for some reason, but was also terrified of being the center of attention. Of course, right now, the center of attention was the massive ring of fire in the middle of their classroom. Trembling, Skylar stood from her desk, pointing her wand at the fire, performing the shield motion she had learned last term. "Finite Incantatem," she said, her voice clear and soft as she tried her best to stay calm. She knew that she had to be calm to correctly perform the spell, or any spell.

Keep it up and soon enough you'll figure out you wanna be a loser like me.

Fanchon scanned the class for a moment, before raising her wand. "Lustro circulus." A ring of crimson and gold fire encircled the front of the room. "You all should have learned how to end a spell last year. Ten house points to whoever can end this one."

When everything turns to black,
You don't know where to go...
You need something to justify your soul.
Silence is broken, confidence is gone;
Everything you're holding onto falls.
