Welcome to Booty Grab 101

The big boss seems to think I have too much time on my hands. I've been asked to clean up the temple, put all the droids I defeated back together, continue kidnapping tanks, and now I'm expected to babysit younglings?

I guess this is a chance to teach some of you to kidnap tanks for me so I can sit back, relax, and have a cup of of hot Aitha protein drink. Pay attention in class though, as I won't be repeating my instructions!

What is Booty Grab?

Some users have tanks in their signatures. Ever seen a tank glow? It looks like this:

User Image

If a tank is glowing, then it is ripe for plucking! Booty Grab is a free to play gold/platinum and item granting game.

Note that Adobe Flash Player is required for making a tank and for playing Booty Grab!

How to Play Booty Grab

1. If you see a glowing tank in a user's signature, click the tank. A new window will open.
User Image

2. The game will start after a short count down.
User Image

3. The object of the game is to collect as many coins as possible with your Overseer (shell) before time runs out.
User Image

Legend for full-size image:
a. Time - the dark area indicates how much time you have left
b. Gold - how much gold you've caught as well as the current multiplier value
c. Buff Timers - which buffs are active as well as the time remaining for the effect; time buffs are automatically added/deducted from the current time - you will not see the time buff indicator in this area
d. Options - (left to right) total gold earned by tank owner, fish information, tank health, tank temperature, sound on/off, view full screen; sound on/off is the only option that works when a booty grab game is in progress
e. You - this is your avatar and your overseer/shell
f. Buffs

Move your shell across the bottom of the tank using either your mouse or the right and left arrow keys. Touching a falling coin with your shell allows you to catch the coin and increase your score.

Most users find the mouse to be the most efficient way to grab; however, make sure your pointer doesn't run off the edges of the tank. If your pointer leaves the tank, your shell will either become stationary or slowly drift to one of the corners.

4. Collect blue buffs to help improve your score:

Avoid red buffs:

5. When the game is over you will see the amount of Gaia Gold or Gaia Platinum earned.

A Sith's Tips for Reducing Lag and Making Profit

Computer/Browser Tips

  • Fewer tabs is better. Have no more than 5 tabs open when playing booty grab. Tabs with a lot of media on them, such as YouTube videos, can increase lag.
  • Install an advertisement blocker, such as AdBlock Plus
  • Firefox is one of the best browsers to use for Booty Grab. Google Chrome is another frequently used browser; however, it is not Flash friendly.

General Game Tips

  • Access the game through a direct link if provided. Sometimes the glow timer in a user's post is also the direct link to the game.

  • When you first open the game start tapping the center of the tank before the timer and instructions appear. Some fish will congregate and stay here during the pre-game countdown.
    User Image

  • Frequently tap the blue bar at the bottom of the screen once the game starts. Certain fish will stay where they are when you do this. If you manage to get them to the center, all you have to do for a great game now is stay under the fish as they rain gold on you. Don't forget to keep tapping the blue bar or else the fish will spread out!
    User Image

  • Change the quality setting to low and turn the game sound off.
    User Image User Image

Coin and Buff/Debuff Tips

Terminology for this section:

Buff - refers to the blue, desirable buffs that cause an increase in speed, time, gold, or shell size
User Image

Debuff - refers to the red, not desirable buffs that cause a decrease in speed, time, gold, or shell size
User Image

  • Collect blue buffs all at once. A combination of a blue size buff, blue speed buff, and blue coin buff allows you to boost your gold catch a lot in tanks with multiple fish.

  • Catch the blue coin buffs back to back. The buffs add up on top of each other and last for an extended time.
    No coin buff: 1+
    First coin buff: 2+
Second coin buff (if first buff was still active): 3+ and restart buff timer
Second coin buff (if first buff is not active): 2+
Third coin buff (if second buff still active): 3+ and restart buff timer
Fourth, fifth, etc. coin buff (if third buff is still active): 3+ and restart buff timer

  • Coin color matters! Most of the time you want to catch the coin with the greatest value.
Plain gold coin = 1 point
Green glowing coin = 2 points
Blue glowing coin = 3 points
Red glowing coin = 5 points

Making a Tank Worth Being Kidnapped

Step 1. Decide what kind(s) of fish you want in your tank.
- You may have up to 17 fish in your tank.
- Lite fish do not glow, so avoid these fish. You can tell if a fish is a lite fish if the name contains [lite] and the item image contains Lite.
User Image (non-lite) vs User Image (lite)
- Goldfish are not recommended. See Common Glitches for more information.
- Many generous users will give fish and aquarium items away for free. Watch for give away threads in the Gaia Aquarium Discussion subforum. Other places you can get fish include Phin Phang and the marketplace. Dumpster Dive and Daily Chance occasionally grant fishes and aquarium items as well.

Step 2. If you have never used Aquarium before, go to your aquarium under My Gaia and click on the exclamation mark beside Barrett.
- Barrett will then guide you through a tutorial on how to add fish to your tank and feed them.
- If you already went through Barrett's tutorial in the past and need a refresher: the process for adding fish is the same as adding decorations to your aquarium. See the next paragraph "Decorate your aquarium".
User Image

Step 3. Decorate your aquarium.
- In the top left corner of your tank is a button that says "Aquarium Inventory". When you click it, Barrett should appear beneath the button.
- Beneath Barrett is a list of item categories. Select the category you want to choose items from. After finding what you would like to add to your tank, click and drag the item into the tank. Sometimes you may have to shake the item around after clicking on it before the item actually moves with your mouse. When you are done, click the save button in the top right hand corner.
User Image User Image

Step 4. Advertise your tank
- Signature - For first time tank users, Barrett offers the opportunity to display your tank in your signature. Alternatively, go to your account preferences and select the option to show aquarium in your signature.
- Create a bump thread (see next section)

Boasting About Your Glow Like a Sith!

Personal Bump Thread

The purpose of a bump thread for a tank is for users to bump the thread when the tank glows; this brings the bump thread of the glowing tank to the top of the Aquarium Forum so that other users can grab the tank. BG bump threads are not supposed to be bumped when a tank is not glowing.

Step 1. Create a new topic in the Gaia Aquarium forum.
(Alternatively, you can make the topic in the Test Forum. This allows you to make multiple posts without the usual wait between posts. After your thread is complete, report your thread and ask for it to be moved to the Aquarium Forum.)

Step 2. Give the thread a temporary name such as: THREAD UNDER CONSTRUCTION. DO NOT POST.

Step 3. What to include in the first post of a bump thread.

Note: To make things quick and easy, I have provided instructions and coding for an example of a first post. All you have to do is modify some of the coding so it links to your tank and information! Check out this post!

Direct Link - This allows users to open your tank in a new tab (instead of a new window). It also allows users who have signature tanks blocked to access your tank. Many users find the direct link games are less laggy than games played through the signature tanks. This is by far the most important item to have in your first post! Keep it near the top of the post so users don't have to scroll through the first post or the page to find your tank.

Glow Timer - This allows users to see if your tank is not glowing, how long before it starts glowing, and - depending on the type of timer - how long it has been glowing. Many users link the glow timer to their tanks. The timer can also help a group of tanks get more plays. If one tank's glow is almost over and another tank just started glowing, the timer can lead a player to grab the former tank first and the latter tank after. Without the timer it's a 50:50 chance for which tank is grabbed if the user isn't familiar with the tank. Broken as of October 2019.

Bump Link - Sometimes this link is to the thread itself. To spare a user the time it takes to load your thread and find the compose button, click it, and use the link to the post composition instead. You can also direct them to a quoted post composition. The benefit of this is you get notified that someone bumped your thread. It is beneficial to provide this link in your signature as well so users can bump your thread and potentially get you more players.

Tank Description - This is optional. You can tell users what kind of fish are featured in your tank.

Step 4. Make 15 more posts in the thread. This is not required, but it is encouraged! After posting the 15th post your thread should be on page 2.

Step 5. Delete all the posts on page 1 except for the very first post. What this does is makes your post the only post visible when users visit the first page of your thread. It also saves users time since they can find your tank right away and don't need to load any other posts (the page takes considerably longer to load if a dozen other users' tanks are on the first page). You may choose to keep 2-3 additional posts on the first page as reserved posts that you can edit in the future.

Step 6. Give the thread a new name. The bolder your thread name, the better.

Examples:
FULL DOLPHIN TANK IS GLOWING
Mermaids on Fire and Glowing!!!
Bob's mixed tank is GLOWING NOW~
Grab some BOOTY HERE~

Step 7. Provide a link to your bump thread in your signature so users can bump the thread when they see your tank glowing. Directly linking to the post composition in the thread will spare users a bit of time.

Step 8. Bump if your tank is glowing!

Linking to Your Bump Thread From Tank

Step 1. Determine the topic ID of your bump thread. If you go to the first page of your bump thread and look at the URL, you should see a 't' and series of numbers listed after the name of your thread. The numbers after the 't' are your topic ID.
User Image

(If you're not on page one of the thread the number might look like this: ######_##. Delete the underscore symbol ( _ ) and the numbers after the underscore. My example URL contains 7 number slots, but your thread ID may contain fewer or more numbers. Note that your tank ID and topic ID are NOT the same.)

Step 2. Go to your Account Preference in Account Settings. In the Feature Options (right side of the page, below the sections for Guilds and Forums & Guilds) there is a box in which you can enter your topic ID.

User Image

Step 3. After saving the changes you should see the blue link available at the bottom of the window containing your tank (when viewed through direct link or by clicking Visit My Aquarium if your signature contains your tank). If you click the link, it should open your bump thread in a new window.

User Image

You can link to your thread, but you are not able to link to post composition through the tank.

Common Glitches and Issues

Platinum Granting Issues User Image

  • There are several different issues around platinum grants in booty grabbing; one of the most frequent issues at the moment is the platinum "cap". Some users are affected and other users are not. Affected users usually find the first handful of games grant the amount displayed on the post game screen (e.g. 59:1); at some point the games start granting 0 or 1 platinum even though the post game screen still shows larger numbers. (If you compare your pre- and post-game platinum amount you can see how much you actually got from the game).

  • Two solutions for users affected by the platinum cap: 1) Use gold currency for bumping glow threads, collecting daily chance, and voting in runway - use platinum currency for playing booty grab games; 2) If you have an alternate account, use one account for bumping glow threads and the other for playing booty grab. (Thank you, Klatt!)

  • Another thing to keep in mind: sometimes closing the game too soon may forfeit your earnings. Make sure the game progresses from the screen showing your earnings to the screen showing the regular tank with the tank's music playing.

    Aquarium Snowflakes GlitchUser Image

    User ImageUser Image
  • If you try to play an affected tank, all you will see is a completely frozen image of the water in the tank. The frozen glitch is due to the item Aquarium Snowflakes being in the main inventory of the frozen tank's owner. If you suspect a tank is frozen, alert the owner in their bump thread (or by PM/profile comment if they don't have a bump thread) and ask them if they have Aquarium Snowflakes in their inventory.

  • Fortunately, the glitch is easy enough to fix. If you were informed that users can't play your tank since it is frozen, locate the item Aquarium Snowflakes in your inventory and move it to either the Locker or the House storage areas of your inventory. Save the changes and users should be able to play your next glow. You can also discard the snowflakes or send them to a mule/friend who doesn't use their tank. Moving the snowflakes to Locker, House storage, or Trash immediately makes the tank playable!

  • Dumpster Dive has been known to periodically grant Aquarium Snowflakes. If you Dumpster Dive and didn't see what item you got, check the aquarium section of your inventory. Better to remove the snowflakes right away rather than find out several frozen glows later that no-one can play your tank.

  • Sometimes it will take a moment for the booty grab game to start! Wait for 30 seconds and try a different link for the same tank before assuming a game is glitched.

  • Credit for figuring out the glitch's cause and solution goes to Lundin Crast.

    Invisible GoldfishUser Image

    User ImageUser Image
  • This is not technically a glitch, but it may appear to be one. A tank will indicate that it is glowing, but there are no fishes seen and the message at the bottom of the screen says the game is an extra game and won't count towards your daily earnings; if you check the tank's analysis you will see that there should be a goldfish glowing.

  • Contrary to the name, Aquarium Goldfish don't drop a lot of gold. They don't glow very often, nor are they often able to be played. The best way to avoid this issue as a tank owner: don't put goldfish in your tank.

Already Played This Tank User Image

    User ImageUser Image
  • For some games you may see a message at the bottom of the screen saying: You have already played this game. If you have already played the game, this is not a glitch, as you can only play each glow once. The message usually (but not always) occurs when a user has an Aquarium Submarine Ticket in their tank.

  • Ignore the message if you have not played the glow yet! You can still play the game! The Booty Grab image appears in front of the error message after the game begins.

    500:500 or 1:6 ResultUser Image

    User ImageUser Image
  • Sometimes the results after a game will display as 500:500 instead of the amount of gold you should have received based on your score. In platinum currency, the glitch displays as 1:6. Players are granted 500 to 506 gold (1 platinum) when this glitch occurs. Most of the time this glitch randomly pops up, so there is no set way to eliminate it.

  • If the glitch occurs on almost every game played for a specific tank it is likely due to an error in the coding for the direct link. Inform the tank owner that you frequently get the 500:500 error when playing their tank and suggest they re-enter the direct link for their tank. The most common coding error is changing the Tank ID in a different user's direct link and not changing the User ID. Both numbers have to be changed for the direct link to grant properly.
    User Image

Changes to Tank not Saving User Image

  • There are two different versions of this problem. The first (non-glitch) version occurs when you try to add more fish to a tank with 17 fish. 17 is the maximum number of fish that you can have in a tank. Before you can add more fish, you have to wait for your current fish to die or move some of them to Barrett's tank. If you aren't sure how many fish you have, check your analysis or the tank stats in your signature tank.

  • Unfortunately, I do not have any solutions available for the second (glitch) version. For this version of the problem, users are not trying to add more than 17 fish and are still having problems saving. Some users find making one change at a time (saving between each change) works for them. You can report the issue to Admin by posting in this thread.

  • If you are having trouble saving the background or terrain, sometimes removing the current background/terrain first helps.

Party Ball Log Out User ImageUser ImageUser Image

  • If you have an Aquarium Party Ball in your tank and continuously see a message saying that there was a problem loading your tank and that you may have logged out, you may have the party ball glitch.

  • Removing the party ball(s) from your inventory should resolve the glitch. It is possible this glitch occurs more frequently in the tanks of users who don't visit Gaia very often.

Less frequent glitches and issues available here.
