Nemeryn

PostPosted: Mon May 24, 2021 5:49 pm
Name: Nemeryn
Age: 21
Nameday: 3555.10.09
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Slow to realize, either way.
Craft: Pirate
Rank: N/A
Location: Western Weyr

Physical Description: Tall, broad, and muscular, Nemeryn cuts an intimidating figure. His skin is tan from a life at sea, and his long mane of red hair is often pulled back just to stay out of his way. He is not prone to smiling, and his default expression seems to be a scowl. His eyes are a warm reddish brown, definitely leaning towards red when in the light.

Personality: Nemeryn is a taciturn man who faces down problems with a will of steel that cows under no pressure. He relies on his ferocity and considerable will to conquer any obstacles that may try to push him back. Pushing back, however, has leaned his behavior into intimidation and he will not hesitate to use it and back up any threats that may come from it. Some might call him a brute because of this, and in some ways, they aren’t wrong. However, Nemeryn often uses these tactics on behalf of others, rather than for himself. His crew and family (almost interchangeable) are the most important things in his world, and he would lay down his life for them without hesitation. Nemeryn doesn’t let people grow close to him easily, but once he does, those people are slotted into the ‘protect at all costs’ category.

Outside of those special people, Nemeryn does not enjoy interacting socially with others. Working as a team is one thing: he has no problem cooperating with others in order to accomplish a task. Having mundane chit-chat? Nope. He can be harsh and doesn’t bother to hesitate to hide his disinterest or disdain. In fact, Nemeryn doesn’t hide any of his emotions well. It makes him easy to read, but can also lead to awkward situations when he reacts in a way he probably shouldn’t. Picking up on social cues and emotions is a struggle, and he often fails to even understand his own feelings. Having a crush on someone? He probably won’t even realize he does until someone points it out to him. Someone’s jealous or envious because of something he’s doing? He’ll have zero clue. If things aren’t stated or spelled out for him, Nemeryn might not ever figure it out.

Underneath all his gruff layers is a softer, gentler side to him. To those important people in his life, Nemeryn is considerate and protective. As he doesn’t drop his guard for many, he can become quite possessive of those rare few who do wiggle under his guard. New faces attempting to befriend “his” people will be treated with suspicion, if not outright hostility.

Positive Trait List Devoted, Fearless, Tender
Negative Trait List Possessive, Dense, Harsh

History: Born to the fierce pirate captain Maeryn and her first mate Milosh, Nemeryn has been a pirate since his first breath. From a very young age, he was taught how to fight, plunder, and survive. The little boy took the nickname Nemesis for himself, declaring that he would be the enemy to any who dared stand against his mother’s crew. He had little interest in associating with anyone whenever they would disembark, not seeing the point. Why bother? They weren’t crew, and he might never see them again.

That opinion changed quickly when he met a boy a little younger than he was at Rivercrest Hold. His name was Aneirin, and he wasn’t quite like anyone that Nem had ever met before. He was happy to spend time with his new friend--eager, even. Maeryn noted the budding relationship with a keen eye, and stops to Rivercrest became a bit more frequent than they had been. That suited Nemeryn just fine. He liked Aneirin very much, unaware that his feelings would deepen into something new over time.

As they grew older, Aneirin walked the tables to become a Journeyman courtesan. Nemeryn had somehow failed to realize that meant that he would now be working in the brothel, and the sudden knowledge made something ugly and savage twist in his chest. He wasn’t quite sure why, but he hated the thought of the young man being with clients. He certainly didn’t hesitate to make his opinion known, either. Still, despite his sour mood, it made him appreciate what time he did get to spend with Anierin all the more. He looked forward to his friend’s rest days with an intensity that few could miss.

Taking pity upon her son, Maeryn eventually pulled him aside to talk to him about his feelings. It was slightly similar to being hit between the eyes with a hammer: once aware of it, Nemeryn wasn’t quite sure how he hadn’t realized it before. He liked Aneirin--far more than mere friendship. The only problem was, he wasn’t exactly sure how to express himself. What if his feelings weren’t returned? He ultimately decided to keep quiet about it, simply appreciating what he had for now.

After one successful raid, the crew sailed back to Rivercrest Hold. Nemeryn was looking forward to seeing Aneirin… only to be told that he was no longer there. He was gone, taken away by a dragonrider for the chance to become one himself. Nem felt as though he’d been kicked in the chest. Aneirin couldn’t be gone. His brain didn’t want to accept it. A dragonrider happened to be visiting Rivercrest at the time, and without thinking, Nemeryn stepped up to confront the man. It wasn’t a rational or smart decision, but he wasn’t exactly thinking. It took all of two seconds for the rider to verbally cut him to pieces: it had been the young man’s choice to go, and Candidates were needed for the dragons that protected Pern. Who did he think he was?

At that moment, the man’s dragon took a pointed interest in the angry Nemeryn, proclaiming that this one would be a good option for a Candidate. Temporarily dumbstruck, it took only a few moments for Nemeryn to agree. He made his goodbyes to his family and was flown to Western Weyr--where Aneirin just so happened to be.

Nemeryn had never considered himself to be anything but a pirate… but perhaps this would be the start of something new.

Lailokenth

Brown Lailokenth

Origin of Name: One of the many names of the legendary sorcerer Merlin, Lailoken is of old Welsh origin. It is disputed if indeed Lailoken was truly the figure of Arthurian legends (who, some say, was the Welsh legendary Myrddin Wyllt), but he was known in his time as a madman who ran away to live in the forest, later known to be a seer and soothsayer. The name Lailoken may be a form of the name Llallogan, which in its modern form llallog means brother, friend, lord, honor, or twin/twin-like. Rather than actually being the source of inspiration for Merlin's name, Merlin is merely a cognate to Myrddin.

Inspiration: Merlin

Merlins are small, fierce falcons that use surprise attacks to bring down small songbirds and shorebirds. They are powerful fliers, but you can tell them from larger falcons by their rapid wingbeats and overall dark tones. Medieval falconers called them “lady hawks,” and noblewomen used them to hunt Sky Larks. Merlin populations have largely recovered from twentieth-century declines, thanks to a ban on the pesticide DDT and their ability to adapt to life around towns and cities.

Merlin pairs have been seen teaming up to hunt large flocks of waxwings: one Merlin flushes the flock by attacking from below; the other comes in moments later to take advantage of the confusion. Merlins don’t build their own nests. Instead, they take over the old nests of other raptors or crows. They also use magpie nests, sometimes laying eggs right on top of the nest’s dome rather than inside the cavity. The name “Merlin” comes from esmerillon, the old French name for the species. Merlins used to be called “pigeon hawks” because in flight they look somewhat pigeon-like. Their species name, columbarius, is also a reference to pigeons.

Personality: It is a rare situation indeed that catches Lailokenth off-guard. The brown is eminently adaptable, capable of turning on a dime if need be. With his wits to guide him, he seems one or two steps ahead of the game most of the time. Though not infallible, he is irrepressible. With a strong drive to fight Thread, Lailokenth will be chomping at the bit from day one to be up in the sky and facing his age old nemesis. His ferocity is not typical of a brown, more on par with a bronze in spite of his diminutive stature.

However, he is not a bronze, nevertheless, and doesn't care to be. Why should he envy others when he himself is so perfectly capable? Confident to the point of near arrogance, Lailokenth would have you know that it is merely a recognition of his own competence at play rather than overweening pride. Indeed, he does not have time for that as he is setting out to be a one dragon wrecking ball on the field of Thread. In interpersonal relationships he is just as aggressive, relentless in his pursuit of a romantic partner, intractable with those who would seek to be his rival.

One particular failing is his distinct lack of fear. One might accuse him of foolhardiness, an unreasonable faith in his own cleverness and strength. One might even be right... but if so, he has no intention of admitting to such a thing. Although vaguely aware that he does have faults, he does not have the time nor care for them. Indeed, he almost has tunnel vision in his single-minded climb toward supremacy. It is not social or political acumen that he seeks, but rather dominance in battle.

Once he has found his perfect romantic partner, he will likely be quite possessive over her. Similarly possessive of his rider, he will not enjoy sharing them with others, no matter how good natured they might be. When love and rider have found him, he will not let them go, not for anything or anyone in this world. After all, he will have worked hard to get to that point, and once it is achieved, very little indeed will stop him. If his rider has any inclination toward ambitions, he will support them, though those dreams are not his own.

Positive Traits: Clever, adaptable, dominant
Negative Traits: Aggressive, possessive, relentless

Egg: a small sized Purple & Orange Dapple egg

Adult Size: 66'
Physical Attributes: A relatively small brown, Lailokenth nevertheless has a strong, powerful build. He is quite a handsome beast, and well aware of it.

Additional Notes: An exceptional hunter, Lailokenth particularly enjoys hunting flocks of wherries, although his rider will have to keep a firm hand on him, as he is inclined toward chasing the entire flock. A keen Chaser in any Flight, Lailokenth possesses great endurance and power, rivalling that of larger browns and even some small bronzes... though the latter is debatable; bronzes have a different makeup and are built to last. Equal opportunity in friendship, he prefers green ladies romantically, for their delicate size, as well as swift and acrobatic flying abilities. Will likely never show any interest in queens, as they are sure to be larger than him - how dare?

Impression Effect: Sheer, animal magnetism. Lailokenth's influence will make it difficult for others not to notice His, which is exactly as it should be, according to the brown. He may gain some intelligence points too, as this scrappy brown is quite the clever beast.

Why Me? Nemeryn (Tsunake)

Lailokenth needed a rider who was strong enough to handle him. He is a powerhouse of a brown (mentally, if not physically) who distinctly lacks an ounce of fear. His and Nemeryn's shared fearlessness may prove to be an issue in time, but there is no doubt that Nemeryn does have a spine. This brown was going to be a challenge for anyone, as he is nearly the equal of a bronze in temperament. He is intent on dominating the world and bringing it to heel; fortunately, he will never be able to quite succeed with his rider. Unfortunately, they both have a possessive nature that will likely be multiplied rather than halved by being a pair. It'll definitely be a journey, but Lailokenth had some strong opinions, so Nemeryn never really had a choice to begin with.
