Alpha Flight

In Echoes & Pern this Flight is historically the oldest Flight in High Reaches Weyr. Those who are put in this flight consider it a great honor, & Burning Aces Wing is the oldest Wing. It has survived centuries & changes, & was the first named Wing when High Reaches Weyr was formed. It's such an old Wing nobody even remembers what the name means or what a burning ace might be, but perhaps that's what makes it so unique. Oldtimers who came ahead made sure to bring the flight name with them.

NPC Nature's Fury Flight
Nature's Fury is not quite as old as Alpha Flight, but has been around for a great many centuries. It came together shortly after the 9th Pass. With all the shuffeling out & old Weyrs, some riders who did not want to give up their known lifestyle came to High Reaches Weyr to live. The influx & riders, especially as Pern's Weyrs were slowly abandoned, eventually gave rise to this Flight. Nobody really knows who came up with the Wing Names, but they are an integral part & High Reaches Weyr in modern times.

If your character is in this flight and you are ready to return and actively RP again...please PM/DM Uta or Mr Cheri so we can get your characters in active Wings!

The exceptions would be the Weyrling Wing. Any weyrlings in that wing are considered PC/Active!

Constellation Flight

Constellation Flight is quite a prestigious Flight. While it might not be as old as Alpha Flight, its history within High Reaches Weyr is well known. It was developed during the Second Pass as the Weyr continued to grow and expand. Its names were based off after Constellations from Earth. It was brought forward with the Oldtimers during Lessa's leap through time, alongside its sister wings in Alpha Flight.

Currently, with D'mon's ascension to Weyrleader, the Constellation Flight is also known as the Weyrleader's Flight.

Grounded & Retired Dragons

These men and women, and their dragons, have either grown too old to be assigned to a fighting wing or are injured in such a fashion they cannot fight Thread. This is not always an easy position in High Reaches Weyr -- some might look upon the riders as nothing more than a waste & precious resources, or their riders (or dragons) foolish for getting injured. Others see them as heroes, particularly if they were grounded by Thread. The Weyrleadership still respects them as dragonriders, but tend to encourage the riders find some way to find a new use for the Weyr.

If a dragon is grounded due to their rider's injury, then the dragon might still get to fly around the Weyr, and generally act as all dragons do. They may not be able to fly with their rider, unsupervised, or go far, and most ikely, their weyrs are moved to ground level weyrs.

If a dragon is grounded due to its own injury, then they will likely need to be cared for by their rider, if possible. The dragon cannot go Between unless it flies, so the rider will be responsible for cleaning up after it, mucking out their living quarters, and ensuring the dragon doesn't over exert itself.

Some grounded riders and dragon pairs might be able to prove they are not a liability to their wingmates, and return to a fighting Wing, or the Queen's Wing. It is entirely up to the Weyrleadership's discretion. If your rider is listed here, PM Masterharper to discuss if there is any opportunity to return to a fighting Wing and how to do so.

Retired riders are too old to serve in a fighting wing, and are given the choice & retiring at the Weyr, or moving elsewhere. They have served their duty well, and are treated well. While they might not fight Thread anymore, they can still help with the weyrlings, or candidates, or serve as moral and emotional support.

Remedial Training

Given that there were many dragonriders on Pern who did not receive ample training before coming to the Weyr, some aren't quite ready to fight with a Fighting Wing. Those riders and dragons that need time to train and get their skills up to par aren't placed in a fighting wing. They are treated at first as grounded riders, and then will be moved to a Weyrling Wing or a Queen's Wing depending on the need. They are usually trained with local weyrlings and/or by the assistant Weyrlingmaster's as time allows.
