It had been their constant companion, this creeping fear, for at least a thousand years. Held firmly within its grasp, their little oasis within the ocean's depths had flourished, fed by a single life given every ten years. One would have thought that with so many lives spent, there would not have been enough yet living within the lost village, but such thoughts were for outsiders. Those of the deep knew where their power, their protection came from. They knew the lights in the dark, and the great arms that kept away sharks and other predators. In return for that safety, the most beautiful, most talented, and most courageous of their number was sacrificed to its jaws. Most felt that loss was weregild, the cost of their lives. Their blood price.
They paid it gladly. Or so they had for many, many years. There had always been those who doubted, but they often found themselves drawn to the altar, to stand before the black cave. What happened next was never spoken of, if anyone knew. If anyone dared to look. The living deafened their ears to any cries they might have heard, choosing to believe that the sound was simply that of the waves, or a pod of whales drifting through far above their little village.
What little demands the creeping dark required of them were seldom viewed as onerous. For, outside of its reach, how might they hunt for the fish that they ate, or the kelp that fed those among them that spurned to devour flesh? How might they see the ocean's dark depths, to dance among that darkness with splendor unmatched by any in the strange, outside world? They were a secretive people, keeping to themselves by necessity, and fearful of being overheard by slumbering ears. They knew nothing of above, nor did they care to, it seemed. Yet there were always rumors of those who had gone farther.
Those who had traveled to other lands, who had seen other things. Legend told of a place where there was no night. A place where bright lights forever hung above, where one might be... free. For they who had known no freedom, even that tiny taste might be enough to turn them away from the old ways. But if they did desire such freedom, they made no mention of it, for indeed they were not alone, would never be alone. And recently... recently it had stirred. Was it awakening? After so long? Some among them quailed, frightened by what such could portend. None could remember what it had been like while fully aware. The very thought brought a shiver to one's spine.
If indeed it was awake, then the world was about to change. Forever.

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: AstoriaFallen Prompt response: Misha, being a Kelpie had taken some time to explore the ocean depths. To be honest he didn't really care for the depths all to much, he liked the land far better. More selection to eat from. Plus his son was a land dweller as well so another reason to choose land from sea. He'd last actually been in the water not too long ago to get some seaweed for his son so it hadn't been too long since he'd last taken a dip. The one thing he hated most about the ocean was the vast emptiness of it. It made you feel alone, even though it was so big. Preference: blue, purple

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: Uta Prompt response: Finnigan loved the ocean -- and why shouldn't he? He was a seathi! The water was his home, and was where all her friends and loves lived. Oh, he certainly knew that it wasn't paradise; the surface could get mighty rough when a storm blew up, and getting beached on shore by the waves was never pleasant, but it was his home. Unfortunately, as of late, land had called to him more and more. Where once had enjoyed the mighty depths of the sea, he now stuck close to the shallower lagoons and shore. His greatest love was stuck on land, which kept him from returning to the deeper and mysterious depths. But like the waves that crept up the beaches shore, Finnigan would roll in with the tide, just to gaze up at his pink companion; or splash in the little shallows. He'd never thought the ocean would be a lonely place, but lately, when he wasn't with his pink love, he found the waters less and less inviting. Preference: Blue, Purple

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: Ebonrune Prompt response: The sea cradled Soini when his anxiety was at its worst and he dove down to lie among the kelp and coral. His bright yellow body made it so he blended in not at all, but that worked just fine by him since it also seemed that anything in the sea that might want to nibble on him thought he might be poisonous. The fact that his kirin heritage gave him a spiny appearance didn't seem to hurt any. The sea cradled him, rocked him gently and shh shhed as the waves undulated overhead. The kelpie in him allowed him to sleep there if he desired, and there he felt safe when the land seemed too dangerous to let him rest. Preference: Blue, Purple

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: tefla Prompt response: Sunset's Coda had tried swimming once when she was a foal and found out that regular Soquili were just not that equipped to dive down into the depths at all. The mare had since tried to avoid swimming at all in lieu of prancing along the shore's edge. She would wait for Illarion to surface and run out to greet her lifemate but she was always hesitant if she could not see the ground below.
It wasn't that she hated the ocean it was just one had to be careful. If there was ever a chance she could enjoy the treasures that the ocean contained within its depths she would jump at the chance. For now though she remained an observer, living vicariously through her mate and children that which she just could not enjoy ... yet. Preference: Purple, Blue

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: Teigra Prompt response: Kala found solace in the depths of the ocean. It seemed natural, being a kelpie, but there was more to it than that. It was the darkness, the silence, how it enveloped and encased him in its calm, soothing presence. The world above was far too bright and harsh most of the time anyway, so the dark one chose to remain below, in the depths, where the waters would shield him from the burning sun above. Only at night and only when it was dark did the shadowy kelpie emerge from the depths to explore the shoreline. Sure, there were new wonders to behold up there...but little compared to his dark paradise below. Preference: Purple/red, teal/purple

Going to the shores and seeing what all has washed into the water. It's a magical time. Preference: purple, pass

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username:Ryghann Prompt response: Every once in a while Aiesha had to go to the Sea to get a few ingredients for her brewing or even her basket weaving. Sometimes she would indeed have to swim down to get was she was after. It was difficult for her to learn at first but after a while she got the hang of swimming using her small wings like fins, and of course her tail! Recently Ai had to get some pretty shells to weave into the band of a bag so she had to swim to the bottom for the best ones. What she loves most about the ocean is during the summer nights when she can sleep on the beach and let the sounds of the waves lull her to sleep, or even stargazing on the beach! Preference: purple, blue

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: Wasteland Wyvern Prompt response: Jokull couldn't help but sigh as he stared at the water that lightly lapped around his ankles. His one good eye watched the waves as they whispered along the shoreline before retreating into the cold depths below. As a kelpi mixed breed he needed the water otherwise his skin would dry out, but he also hated the water. The cerynei and angeni blood that mixed with his was a curse in his mind. His tail made his wings useless, and horns like his weren't very useful as weapons below the waves. He was no different than the flightless penguins that he remembered from his childhood. Cliff diving was as close as the stallion got to flying. He stared hatefully at the water before taking a deep breath and diving down below following the sandy bottom until inevitably he came to a drop off that led into the much deeper oceans. Again his one good eye glared with hatred. He watched the seathi dance in the deeper water, unhindered by anything. How deep they could go, how much fun they must have. He wished he had been born a true aquatic, but life had not been kind. If only his father had never loved his mother. A bird and a fish... How poetic. How stupid. Now he suffered for their folly. With a quick lash of his tail he swam back up to the shore and gasped for breath for a moment, his feathered wings sodden and drooping. One last hateful glance at the ocean before he returned to the beached shipwreck he called his home. Preference: Blue, Purple

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: Owlsomniac Prompt response: Nihiligo -
"The ocean is beautiful, and relaxing... but it hides many dangers beneath its surface, as well as many wonders. I suppose it's all of these things that make it so fascinating, and so mysterious. Though my personal favorite thing about it is the way it keeps me guessing -- I never really know what I might find when I visit, or what may be waiting for me to discover beneath the waves." Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: muffled_undertone Prompt response: Raeza has always held a deep fear for the ocean. Always hearing how wonderful and refreshing a swim in the ocean is, Raeza is curious but apprehensive about entering its translucent blue waters. Raeza vacillates between finally taking a dip and continuing to stare at the ocean in admiration and fear from a safe distance. Preference: blue, pass

Darling it's better down where it's wetter! Username: Mameha Otome Prompt response: Walla Walla loved the ocean. She had been raised so close to it and learned to swim there from the most wonderful mer. She only lamented the fact that she could only dive and swim so far before panic setting in and chasing her back to the surface. She vowed someday to find a way to visit the beautiful depths the mer spoke of, but for now...she would simply enjoy playing in the waves among the coves of the beach. Preference: Purple, Blue
