In the fog in front of him was a beast -- a monster -- a centipede that, for some reason, turned his blood cold and made him shudder. He didn't know who he was, and he didn't know what it was, but apparently some part of him knew what to do.

He reached for his side, like he expected something to be there, muscle memory that came up empty. And then, with his skin still prickling and panic that had to be swallowed, he stepped in to attack the monster with fists and feet, tearing at its legs and trying to bring it down.

Apparently he was good at this, and that taught him something about himself, anyway. The monster clawed at him and he wanted to run, but instead he clawed back, shouting something unintelligible back --

and then it was done. It stopped moving. It shuddered at his feet, once, and then it was gone.

Breathing heavily, he stared down at his own empty hands.
