-_-The primary mineshaft that operates in service to the merchant city, Takumi. While very well-equipped with tracks for mine carts, in recent years the mine has actually been understaffed. A pickaxe and a helmet are provided to all workers who do not have their own.
A series of minecart railways allows even the physically feeble to work the mines. Body rank requirements for doing mining missions are reduced by one rank. Mining missions currently give +10% Ryou. Uncovering a vein awards a finder's fee to the one who discovered it. Uncovering a vein of something rare yields a special reward, ranging from special mining gear to an introduction to someone in town.

Izengo stepped into the cavernous... well, cavern. torches lit the walls, sending shadows flickering over the various mine rails, equipment, and the few people he could see. It was quiet... more than it should have been. He'd expected the chatter of workers and the clanging of metal on stone. There was some of that of course, but he couldn't help the feeling that this particular operation was not nearly as well staffed or funded as it perhaps should have been.
He shrugged. All the better. The fewer others there are, the faster I'll be recognized.
He glanced around at the few people he saw scattered about, trying to figure out who was in charge of this rag-tag operation.

"Get your pickaxe here! Get your freshly oiled pickaxe here!" Such did a dirt-covered woman with a wide grin call over to Izengo from near the entrance to the cavern. Behind her was a stack of the aforementioned pickaxes, next to a minecart full of protective head gear. "Oi, sonny! You here to work or are you just going to stand around all day?"
The woman would grab a pickaxe and a helmet and offer them to the lad with the air of someone completely expecting him to take her up on her offer of work.

Izengo strode over to her and took the proffered equipment.
"Anything in particular I should know?" he asked, placing the helmet on his head and testing the weight of the pickaxe in his hand. It felt good and solid, and for a moment he wondered if he should see about using something like this as a weapon. A sharp blade on one end, and the driving spike in the other. Perhaps not as fast or versatile as a sword, but it could still deal significant damage if applied properly. Not to mention it had other uses outside of swordplay...

The woman looked contemplative for a moment, but that didn't stop her from immediately responding:
"Stay away from any pillars you see and run if you see cracks start spreadin' or hear rumblin' or your head starts gettin' fuzzy," she drawled while balancing a pickax on the back of one hand. "You see any animals, you run. You need help for any reason you can ring one o' the bells. Oh, you find a vein and we'll give you a bonus up front, call it a finder's fee. Find a vein of something precious and there might be something nice we can work out for you. Maybe a pickax with your name on it or an introduction to someone in town."

"Hm?" Izengo said, pulled out of his inner reverie. "Oh, yes."
He smiled his friendly smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"Sounds easy enough," he assured, adjusting his grip on the pickaxe. "I'll get right on it then. Thank you, Miss...?

"Sakiyama Koufu!" she responded cheerily, offering a friendly handshake and a wide grin to go along with the proclamation. Koufu seemed not to notice the lack of sincerity in his smile or was ignoring it. "Wish you the best of luck! Try not to get buried, you hear?"

"I shall endeavour to do so," Izengo replied, giving her a firm handshake in response. "I will see you again soon."
With that, he released the hand and hefted his pickaxe. he turned, and made his way deeper into the mine.
It was a start, at least.

"Work hard!" Koufu called after him. As Izengo made his way deeper, the lady entered a shallower shaft nearer the top, presumably so as not to waste time should any other hopefuls stop by. Sounds of work issued forth soon thereafter.

Time to get to work it seemed. Hikari had asked around and it seemed the most assured to place to find solid paying work was at the mine. The option didn't really appeal to her but hey she couldn't really get picky now. [1/4] At the mine she was quickly given some basic tools. Helmet, pickax, and a map of the current shafts. Then with a pat on the but she was sent to work. [2/4] Making her way down into the depths she turned on her helmet light so that she could see in the dimly lit tunnels. Eventually she picked a tunnel and started walking down it. Her eyes scanned the rather speechless rocks for signs of ore. [3/4] Eventually she found some. Well she at least thought she did. Only some digging would tell what was beyond the wall of rock. [4/4] Scout E-rank.
*c***k* went her pickax as it slammed into the rock. Each hit brought out that noise of metal on metal. The noise was soon followed by the sound of rocks falling. [1/5] The rock was bland and boring, just normal rock. Soon it started piling up too. However that was when a mining cart came by. [2/5] Hikari chatted with the strapping young man who was pushing it while she loaded the empty rock chunks onto the cart. Soon enough her rubble was gone. It was then that the man got on his way again. [3/5] As she got back to work she soon started noticing the color of the rock changing. It started to shift from dark gray to an orange-y red. Having grown up fairly privileged she was educated enough to know that red rock was probably iron. [4/5] As she continued to dig more and more chunks of it appeared. Soon enough she had collected roughly eleven pounds of the ore. Eventually the ore subsided and the rock returned to normal. [5/5] [Gained 11 lbs of iron] [Actual mining B - rank]
Well now that the little pocket of iron seemed to be deleted she was back to just regular old rock. That was no good. Especially since she wasn't in the mood to dig a new shaft in the search for more. [1/4] No now the scouting process began anew. Taking her tools she followed the tracks down further into the mine. It was dark and musty but that didn't bother Hikari too much. If she really wanted to do some serious mining there was always her bakuton. [2/4] As she searched her eyes caught sight of what looked like it might a reddish tint. It was hard to tell but perhaps worth a test. Taking the pickax into hand she gave it an exploratory whack. [3/4] The rock chunk gave way after a few hits. However she still couldn't tell. Upon smashing the chunk open, she did find trace chunks of iron. Perhaps this was a good spot to dig?[4/4] Scout E
Back to the digging Hikari went. Whacking out chunks into the wall in search of iron. Why?[1/5] Two reasons mostly. The first was that she needed money and any finding any amount of ore would net her a finders fee. Second she needed iron for her future projects.[2/5] Primarily she had two ideas in mind. A pair of pistols was one. The other was for her very own o-yoroi. [3/5] With those goals in mind she was able to keep swinging and smashing rock. She'd make enough money working this mine to get started at least. Just like this had many small steps so to was it one on her larger journey. [4/5] "Better watch out rock cause you're mine!" Maybe a little overzealous but it helped to keep her spirits up. Besides mining this iron was good physical training. [5/5] [Gained 5 lbs of iron] [Actual mining B]

Eventually that pocket of iron ran out like the last. So with that in mind, Hikari was gonna need to look for a new mining spot. Once again... [1/4] Fortunately that guy operating the cart came back through. Fortunate because she was able to strike up a conversation. "Hey handsome, know any place a girl could mine some iron around here?" [2/4] "Oh heh heh, um I think about three hundred yards further down the shaft there's a small offshoot tunnel with some. Say what's your name anyway." Hikari had to laugh for a moment while she gathered her tools and started walking. [3/4] "Hikari Hanabi bb." With her name given she headed off to check to the spot. It looked promising but only mining would tell. [4/4] [Scout E]
Now at the spot which was described to her it was time to get down and dirty. By that of course, it was time to put her back into it and start digging. The rock looked promising enough. [1/5] Hopefully it would prove fruitful. Hikari had collected a lot of iron ore so far but she had more to go. Taking her pickax into hand she got to work. [2/5] It was slow going since she'd been getting tired. But the rock chunks came tumbling out of the wall. They shown red and she knew there was good stuff here. [3/5] All Hikari had to do was keep digging. More and more the iron came as she built up a nice little horde. It was all very satisfying. [4/5] Slowly the amount of red rock tapered off. Eventually it returned to just the dull gray of stone. Finally Hikari was done mining for the day. [5/5] [Actual mining B] [Gained 12 lbs of iron]
With a lot of iron ore in her bag, Hikari set off to collect her money. [Exit]
