As the angel gently lay her head on her pillow after a hard day's work, she quickly fell asleep. In those moments between life and when life becomes a dream, a golden, glittery butterfly flit into her room, leaving a small, but light trail in it's wake. It fluttered towards Zofie and disappeared the moment it touched her sleeping form
.

=======================

Zofie is standing on the cliffs with Dragnid Forest behind her. Below, the sea is littered with sharp rocks and shipwrecks. It feels cold. There's movement on one of the rocks, near a wrecked rowboat. She can't quite make it out, but something looks off about the stranded pae. Below she can see Kurt, on the ship heading through the jagged rocks. She screams out to him, but he can't hear her. She feels herself screaming, but can't hear anything. The sounds from the dark forest behind her, and the waves hitting hard against the cliff-side make screaming futile.

But was she trying to warn Kurt?

In her haste to return home and check on Kurt, she slipped and fell from the cliff. The fall lasted at lot longer than the distance would suggest. She braced for the impact with the water, but it never came. No, she was floating in front of an underwater cave entrance. Upon surveying her surroundings, she assumed she was underwater. But how?

Suddenly naiads showed up, singing and playing all around her. They grabbed her hand and urged her to go play with them. And Zofie did, at first. But she caught a glimpse of an alpaca that brought her thoughts back to Kurt. But wait? She was under the sea and there was an alpaca? Looking back at it, there was only a rock formation. It didn't even look like an alpaca on second sight.

Once again, she found herself in front of the cave. Against better judgement, she swam into the darkness.

She surfaced in a cavern, sucking in a deep breath. She didn't even realize she'd been holding her breath the whole time. The cave was enormous. Ceilings higher than the sky, and it went on forever. The most notable feature of this grand underground cavern was the gold. It was everywhere. Piles of it halfway up the walls.

As Zofie moved to get out of the water the treasure grew, a familiar sound whispered on the tiny breeze flowing through the cavern. "Zofie"

"Kurt!" Zofie screamed. "Where are you!?"

"Zofie, over here!"

The angel scrambles over a pile of stamped gold coins and spots a young girl. "Help me!" the girl was sinking into the water as the coins she was standing on gave way. She was just ... standing there. And pleading for help.

As soon as the girl was underwater, she turned into a hideous beast gnashing her teeth towards Zofie with a look of hunger in her eyes.

"Over here!" it was Kurt's voice again!

Zofie followed deeper into the cavern. After what felt like days of travel through a gilded cavern, she came across a girl, she didn't look any older than teen, and she was weeping. Before Zofie could even open her mouth, the girl stood up and took the angel's hand. "Please, I need you to see this!" The strange girl dragged Zofie by the arm even deeper into the dark.

In the dark, Zofie heard Kurt talking. But when she tried to call out, her voice was muted. She stopped and pulled her hand from the girls'. She mouthed the word 'no', but the teenager told her it was close, and pulled her again.

They came out of the cave to another deep cavern, but this one had light. The two girls came to a stop at the edge of a steep drop. Opposite, there was another cave entrance. But no way to get there.

But that took second seat to what she saw next. Kurt and Malak sitting on a small island made of treasure. They were surrounded by pretty girls and monsters alike. The water was filled with the beasts surrounding the island like sharks.

Zofie looked to the girl that led her here. The girl smiled wide, showing a mouth full of sharp teeth not unlike a shark.

Scenes moved as if on rails, feelings sticking while the body reacted. Her mind a whirl. Kurt for one had grabbed her by the throat with a terror, joy and longing all wrapped into one. There was nothing she could do but watch and allow things to move. Was she watching his final moments? Something about it stood as off but there just didn’t seem to be time to think on it.

Jolt of the girl turned monster in particular rewrote all the rules she’d ever known in one heart stopping motion. Legs should be ice, unmoving in place had it not been for the teen tugging her along. This was wrong she should be going forward! Only, the girl was being as typical a teen as she’d ever seen. That feeling of normalcy clashing with the feeling of ‘off’ and ‘danger’ rang in chorus in her head.

“Kurt!” A name rolled off her tongue silenced to the scream in her chest. Bringing her hand up to clinch over her heart, Zofie allowed herself the moments to look around her scene. After what happened earlier, it only stands to reason that the water turned the pae here into monsters. The pretty girls and the teen by her side likely included.

Suppressing a shudder and stopping her head form leaning too far back, she tried to speak to the teen, “Thank you for bringing me to him. How do I get them back?” The answer in her heart told her she wasn’t going to like whatever the teen had to say. Light above signaled a source somewhere but daring to look away from the uncanny teen took more than she had in her.

The girl stared at her, head tilted to a painfully alien degree before giving a dual-tone response,” Kasca!” Laughing in a tonal depth that didn’t seem possible by her appearance, the teen pulled once again. One more hard pull brought them both to the edge of the steep drop. Her heels reaching thin air before allowing herself to fall back.

Attempts to free herself from the teen came to nil, as the teen fell so did Zofie. Remembering the girl screaming for help prior, the ice grip on her heart clinched to the point it paralyzed her lungs. Long after it should have been too late, her wings opened as if on their own catching on nothing to drift her to the treasure filled island taking the teen with her.

Screeching giggling answered the change in plans, one free hand waving down to the monsters below. Swinging her legs back and forth, she kicked her little feet and smiled frightfully.

The acts of her unattended passenger sent the angel careening towards the waters once more. Below her the waters churned with so much activity it seemed to froth into a life of its own. What seemed to be pure chance, the girl swung back with just enough momentum built to turn a glide into a head over heals cartwheel right into the treasure filled island. As with the previous one, the island seemed to bubble to life growing out into the water. Activity around her scattered where ever the treasures encroached one screeching as it got closer.

On the island, the girls screamed in ridiculously high-pitched dancing around the growing land masses huddling around the males for safety. When it stopped, they came out circling and giggling around the pair. The act of coordinated foot movements and swaying shoulders mesmerized. With the help of her teen friend, the angel started to pick up the movements beginning to laugh now.

“Zofie”

Stopped in her tracks, the game ended for her but continued for the girls. Ever attempt to get past the girls to reach the boys became bodily blocked. Huffing, her cheeks puffed out, her eyes dropped to the leg movements. Fine.
Moving back, she waited for the right timing, the pink angel lunged forward, hitting the ground after skidding under two raised legs. Her landing was so elegant, butt in the air face in the metallic treasures. All of the girls found this hilariously. Without opening her eyes, she could pick out the teen from the others the too deep tonal noise among the high pitch sing-song delights. Well, they were amused.

Sitting back on her heels, a golden circle stuck around her left ear unnoticed. There, within touching range was a male she never thought she’d see again. “Kurt!” He didn’t turn to her; the other male did not react either. Both sat on their golden seats with twisted dark as pitch thorns weaved around their wrists and ankles. At once it looked like it had been a thorny silver cuff long corrupted and corroded into this sickening dark black brown and green tarnished convinced. Wrists and ankles looked so damaged the cuffs could well have become part of their beings.

Reaching without thinking about her action, Zofie received a burning jolt that seemed to enter her vein and shoot her heart face enough to chase out the cold and her breath with it.

Appraching, the teen laughed again, kneeling to the woman’s side. Raising her finger to her lips she chastised before reaching down and just touching one cuff a peace releasing one wrist on both captives.

Eyes wide, Zofie shook off the nausea in her stomach to once again thank the girl. “Oh that’s wonderfully done! Please release them!” What ever those cuffs were made out of, her bare hands couldn’t touch them but the teen’s could.

The girl got back up moving to return to her ‘friends’ Shaking her head she moved again, playing a new game and beckoning the woman to join, “Play with us, we will.” A promise of release for her beloved friend and whomever this boy was came from a proven source. Her own hands couldn’t touch the cuffs so what other choice was there?

The girls played a game of increasing violence dancing around each other with attacking grace while bumping into her hard enough to promise bruises. Any time she dodged a laugh and claps would follow. Surprising trust began to build as each ‘win’ did earn the promised action. Her teen friend would touch another cuff freeing another limb. No longer was it a two for one, each new cuff earned through the same brutal game. Raising a boy had not prepared her for this level of rough housing.

Last round to free Kurt ended with her getting an elbow right to the face sending her jerking back. The motion sent the gold ring from its perch on her ear to land on the arm of one of the girls. They stared at it for half a breath before all of them screaming and scattering. The very action had her jerk back and hunch up shielding herself with her wings. Looking through feathers she searched for whatever scared the girls. Their reaction came from a fear that gripped her just by feeding off their reactions. As they entered the water, the frothing up continued with heightened aggression. After the waters calmed it seemed an additional set of hungry eyes peered out at her.

The last to go to the water was her teen ‘friend.’ This one had a unique pink strip appear as her physical form turned into the same beasts around the lake. The look of sadness or betrayal forced the air out of her lungs. Impulse brought her hand up to reach for the girl but at the last minute she winked before disappearing.

Sudden breath reminded her of the air she was holding longer than necessary. Breathing in through her noise and flexing her wings she turned to look at Kurt and the unknown male. Both were still sitting there they looked like they were staring through each other not noticing anything around. Touching Kurt didn’t elicit any reaction out of the male.

“Kurt! Go home!”

That didn’t cause any movement beyond the harder beating in her chest.
“Kurt, move, please!” Her shaking voice blubbered as the water flowed from her eyes salting her cheeks. “The alpaca, the girls and cria!” A sob caught in her throat turning into a choked gasp.

Kurt and the unknown male raised from their seated positions. Their shoulders slumped and movements sluggish. Neither seemed to do more then react until the faintest trail appeared between the three. It was the barest glimmer of gold dancing around them before heading towards the other entrance. The males moved towards the light walking closer to the frothing water.

Eyes widened as she moved hurriedly “Wa-wait!” This wasn’t safe the water wasn’t safe! Moving in front of them she tried to put her hands up to keep them from walking forward. Only, as soon as her foot hit what should have been water, she found wet metal. The treasures around them seemed to react pulsing upward in flowing platforms. Both males started climbing following the call of the faint golden trail.

Following, the angel practically fell over her own feet to scatter her way up further to encourage the trail to continue taking all of them towards wherever that was leading. Once they reached the cliff face to the entrance, the treasures fell collapsing the path from where they came. The teen appeared, following her with that ever-wide smile and below, the water became eerily still. No movement on or off the island as it sat barren. Why did that chill her to the bone?

The males didn’t stop as they kept moving focused only on the trail. With no better options, Zofie followed behind them. Finally, she gave up asking questions of the two and her teenage guest seemed to enjoy the show following in silence.

The next chamber had a sky light so far up blackened walls it appeared as all of the sun focused to this very spot. That created a moment of relief. Lowering her eyes, she caught the males walking towards an empty wall. Where were they going? Hoping on her heel she hurried to follow, feet landing on floor like carved scales. Strange feeling, the ridges of what had to be meticulous carved to earn that distinct shape. So, focused on her feet she almost ran into the black void in front of her.

It wasn’t a void, it was an object so dark it seemed to eat the very light from the ceiling with gluttonous vigor. The oddest feeling hit her, suddenly the scaled floor became ankle deep sand. Holding her feet tightly to the point her whole body jerked forward yet her feet remained planted. It was the girl, the teen that pushed her through ice watered sand. Moving around the void to where she was standing to its left. Through the corner of her eyes she saw the shape. Even still it was inch by inch before she turned her head enough to actually see it.

What she saw, the gasp from her mouth could well have been forced out by two icy hands holding her lungs hostage and racing through her veins. This was a throne, the blackest stone and wood decorated opulently with images detailing fierce battles, what must have been a great love story, figures decorated everywhere but her eyes focused on nowhere. This was a throne. It was empty.

Without any reason she could point to, the emptiness of it all threatened to such the very light and life from her bones. Something was wrong, some how more wrong then when she found Kurt here.

Kurt!

Turning, all she heard was the shifting of stone but no Kurt or the other male. Where did they go? There was no other exit besides up or back. Back never seemed to be an option. Had they gone back home some other way? The teen laughed again and gave her another nudge calling out, “Save me, tell!” She then retreated, the only time thus far anything seemed to go back. Before her mind could even start to comprehend that, her wings were going racing with urgency she’d never felt in her life. Up! She had to get up and out of here. The though clawed at her mind and heart with claws so real it was visceral.
