It was late morning, with waves crashing against the beach, and the sun beating mercilessly down on the world below. The rider had been stuck on the near desert island south of Southern Boll for almost three months, and was a mixture of anxiety, nerves, and uncertainty. "I wish you'd told me you'd been so close to clutching, Susurinth!" The young woman looked about as haggard as they came; her hair was frazzled, she had long since gone from a solid burn to a tan from months of exposure, and she looked as if she needed a few more good meals. She wasn't sickly or starving, but being stuck on the island had certainly taken its toll!

I hadn't known, Mine. I thought we still had time. Came the mild answer of the queen.

The gold was happily turning her eggs on the sand, which was something she'd done naturally. Pevari had noticed that the queen seemed to favor some of the eggs, and disregarded the rest; she'd wondered if they were duds, or something had happened, but wasn't going to intervene. Honestly, Pevari was more than a bit clueless about this whole clutching thing -- Susurinth had only had her maiden flight a few months prior, and the queen was nearing six Turns old!

While Pevari had thought about going to the Weyr, the young rider had lost track of time. She had known it would take some time for Susurinth to clutch, but neither rider nor dragon had thought it would happen so quickly. Had three months gone by so soon? Ah, but before she'd known it, on a bit of a holiday while visiting the warmer climates of Southern Boll, the queen had suddenly, urgently, rushed them to the warmest island she'd known. It was there, much to Pevari's horror and embarrassment, the queen had clutched!

Word had gotten back to Fort Weyr, and while they had disapproved, had offered Pevari and Susurinth aid, as well as a promise of Candidates. They had explained what would happen, and how Pevari would know when the time to gather the Candidates drew near. All would be well, they promised, and Fort Weyr would happily adopt the clutch so Susurinth and Pevari could be on their way. They had set the rider up with supplies, contacts, and kept her company when they could. They told her to watch for tunnel snakes and local wildlife that preyed on eggs like Susurinth's, and had set up some flits to keep guard. The only days they stayed away were when Thread fell over Fort's territory...

Like today.

"It's hitting them hard today, isn't it?" The woman wondered aloud, looking up at the bright blue sky. There wasn't a cloud in sight.

Susurinth paused in her turning of the eggs, as if confirming, before answering. Yes. Ruatha, Fort Hold, its local Halls, and right through Fort Weyr itself. It's an ugly one. Eight hours, and they are directly over the Weyr! Pevari gave a shudder. Thread was something the woman had avoided, if only because she felt there was little she could do. She wasn't well trained, as this beach-side excursion proved. But maybe going back to the Weyr would do Susurinth and herself good. Maybe . . .

I heard from Cordrath today. He wanted to know how we were. The queen sounded pleased that the father of her first clutch had proved to be so charming -- for all that he was a stranger.

Pevari was about to answer when she felt her queen's mood shift. "What's wrong?" Immediately alert, the young woman turned to look at her queen, whose eyes were suddenly turning a bright blue-purple. A hum. A thrum that seemed to go through the sand itself, and right through the gold rider's heart. She knew what that meant, remembered it from when she'd Impressed. "Not now, Susurinth! Tell me, not now!" The woman's joy suddenly mixed with fear. "Did you tell Fort Weyr? Are they coming? Will they bring Candidates?"

The gold hummed, her maternal joy mixed with curiosity, and perhaps a bit of fear. What would happen now? The beach was barren, and Fort Weyr was under a direct onslaught of Threadfall. Could they get their Candidates out? Would they risk it? Would they risk her gold's eggs? Both mother and rider fed on one another's worry and panic. They will come when they can, but my eggs cannot wait. There is no food, there is no one to welcome them! Cordrath, our babies come! But we are without food or Candidates! Help! HELP!

Thankfully, word spread fast. While Fort Weyr was preoccupied with the fight, they did send word to their closest allies, High Reaches Weyr and Western. Any Candidates who could make it to the island beach were welcome to go! Fort would send who they could, but wouldn't likely arrive until after the immediate threat had passed overhead. At this point, the babies would Impress where they would, provided there were Candidates, and food for them.

~ ~ ~ ~

It didn't take long. Though the eggs were still, Susurinth had never stopped her humming. A bronze dragon had also appeared, and had settled not far from the sands. Though Pevari worried, soon enough, the island started getting busier. Dragons from both Western and High Reaches, and a few from Fort, came with tables, chairs, food, drink, fresh chopped meat, and most importantly, Candidates. The Candidates had been encouraged to get into robes but it was clear some looked quite dazed. The heat this close to the equator was intense, and the sands were quite hot. The eggs didn't seem to mind, nor Susurinth, who could only send happy gazes at each dragon that appeared.

Her clutch would not suffer from a new mother's lack of experience, not today at least.

The island, thankfully, provided natural shade for spectators with lush forests surrounding the cove, and softer grasses where the new weyrlings could come up from the beach. This would be a private Hatching -- one where there would be no guests flown in from Hold and Hall. No, this would be for the Weyrs only, their Candidates, and those who would come to help prepare a transport for the new babies. They would all need to be flown back to their respective Weyrs once they were fed, oiled, and ready for sleep. Though some food and snack and drinks would be provided, hastily, for those waiting, any official celebrations would be done at the individual Weyrs when there was time.

It wasn't the most traditional of Hatchings, but new life was new life, and neither Western nor High Reaches would say no to a new generation.

General Hatching Information

Welcome to this Surprise (and the shop's 3rd) PC Hatching! We want to thank everyone for participating in this shop and giving it so much life! Fable and I wouldn't be here without you, so thank you for sticking around. That said, we do want to go over some general rules (IC and OOC) and reminders so this Hatching can be a success!

If you have a Candidate signed up in the Permanent Thread, but they aren't in attendence, please strike them out for this Hatching!

General Information & Rules
  • Not every Candidate or Player is going to Impress. Please, please, please don't get too discouraged or upset if that is the case. We only have a limited number of pets to give away, and honestly tried to find the best fit for each dragon. There will be other Hatchings, I promise. gaia_star Many, many, many other Hatchings.

  • Please don't get upset if Staff impresses a dragon. We try not to take away from the players fun, but staff are also players, too. Any dragons that might go to staff were either customed-in behind the scenes or chosen simply because their Candidate was the best fit. As stated above, there will be other Hatchings.

  • Please don't get upset if your Candidate does not Impress to your preferred color. Just like in Pern, nobody could ever guess whether or not a Candidate Impressed, much less a certain color. This is supposed to be fun, not some sort of tragedy. If you don't like the dragon that we fit to your Candidate you absolutely cannot rehome it or give it away. Additionally, if you throw a fit about it and we find out, or you discourage other players, this could bar you from future Hatchings. We honestly tried very hard to match Candidates with characters so the fit mad sense.

  • Don't discourage others or vent at them if they Impress (or don't Impress) a dragon or certain color. If we hear about players giving other players crap for their Impression, we can bar you from future Hatchings. There will be other characters, other Hatchings, and other opportunities for all! Please keep this fun and support one another, not tear folks apart.

  • We really, really, really, really loved all of your Candidates! No really, Fable and I hemmed, and hawed, and went back and forth, and back and forth for days. In some cases, Candidates may not have Impressed because we have ideas for particular colors or personalities for them. If you do not Impress, we are aware, and we have big ideas for the future. Please give us a chance and be patient.

  • IC Action = IC Consequence. If you role-play in the Hatching and your Candidate does something stupid, remember that ICly there could be hell to pay. If a dragon doesn't maul you, then A'ral or Gr'del could very well pull you from the Sands. Please don't make either do that.

  • We will hatch all the PC eggs and play the hatchlings until they Impress. Once they Impress, they will be the players to control. We will quote folks in the Hatching Sands, but also PM them the dragonets profile. Though you can pretend Fort Weyr is at the Hatching, and some of their people are there, we will only be matching dragons to Western and High Reaches Candidates!

  • The Hatching Thread will likely peter off after the last egg Impresses. Feel free to RP in this thread as long as you like!

  • Everybody is encouraged to participate! Candidates from both Weyrs will have arrived regardless if you have time to post them. Dragons who come to watch can settle on the beach to watch the newest babies, and talk to one another. This is a weyrfolk only sort of event, due to its suddeness! This means only folks who are at the Weyrs can participate. If you have a stands-only Candidate, you just need to have some reason for them to be swept up in this madness -- maybe they came as a spectator, or as help.

  • Tarot Clutch Weyrlings do NOT get to go! Spooky Clutch Weyrlings do NOT get to go! They must stay behind. Not all Wings were allowed to go... We'll just pretend some of the NPC Flights and most of the NPC weyrfolk that were asked to stay at their resident Weyrs. Feel free to bring forth any actual PCs you have at High Reaches Weyr and Western Weyr.

  • There might be Hatching Feasts at both Weyrs after the Hatching. We'll see how the players feel. In the mean time, once a pair Impresses, they should go up the beach, where they will be given buckets of meat to feed their weyrling, and buckets of oil and paddles to scrub their babies after they eat. Mingling, snacking, and some drinks will be offered to riders and weyrfolk to mingle post-Hatching.

  • Candidates who Impress will go directly to their individual home Weyr. This means if a Candidate from Western Impresses, they will become a new Western Weyrling. If someone from High Reaches Impresses, they will become a new High Reaches Weyrling. This means one Weyr might have a larger, or smaller, group than the other. No Candidates or Weyrlings will mistakenly wind up in another Weyr. You can bet the Weyrlingmaster's and Candidatemasters know their kids! Don't even try!

  • No sneaking into the Hatching. If you're not at either Weyr, you're not coming.

  • This Hatching takes place around noon High Reaches time. This means it was probably about 9am Western Time when the call came through.

IC Rules & General Information
  • Candidates can get mauled, so they have been told time and time again to stay out of the dragonets way! If they art attacked, they are to try to cover their head and protect their vulnerable bits, but should not really fight back. That might upset it further.

  • Do not break into eggs! Period. If an egg needs to be broken into, the shop will make it VERY clear.

  • Candidates are asked to arrive on the Sands with a thin pair of sandals but no boots or heavy soled shoes! The Sands are hot, so standing from foot-to-foot is common.

  • Candidates will be brought to the beach under A'ral and Gr'del's watchful eyes. Should they Impress, they will take their dragons up the beach, away from the water, to shady spot further up, where Weyrlingmaster Liat and V'mel have have prepared meat to feed them. Baby dragons tend to eat a lot, and tend to itch a lot as their skin dries. They will be offered pails full of oil and brushes to make sure they are properly oiled, with assistants there to help. The new weyrlings belongings will be moved from the Candidate Barracks to the Weyrling Barracks by drudges and lower cavern's workers as needed.

  • After the Hatching has wrapped, everyone will return home to their respective Weyrs.

Any other questions? PM Masterharper or Fated Fable! With that, welcome to the Hatching!!

[[This Hatching has officially begun! Feel free to place Candidates -- yes, they are in their robes -- on the beach in a semi-circle facing the eggs. Susurinth is standing behind them, guarding her clutch, but she is not being aggressive. She seems more curious than anything.

Weyrfolk from both High Reaches and Western can settle farther back, away from the Candidates to watch. There are some chairs and tables, some food, some drink and refreshments. There's not a huge feast spread, but enough food and drink to keep people watching happy. It's pretty informal. There's a separated spot where the newly Impressed can go to feed their dragons -- Liat and V'mel are likely there, along with assistants.]

Gr'del couldn't believe what he was witnessing. An adult queen clutching in this day and age was both stupid and dangerous. He had to hand it to Fort Weyr to have kept the island safe during Threadfall all these months -- given the island the gold had chosen was was hardly populated, they could have well let Thread consume the beach. Thankfully, by a stroke of luck, Fort Weyr's dedication to fighting Thread had kept the queen, her rider, and the eggs safe. The fact that tunnelsnakes hadn't gotten to them, and other wildlife, was also a blessing.

"Shaffing fool gold rider," he grumbled to Siriath as he walked up and down the beach, looking out for his group of Candidates. He had sent them to the clutch, after having told them to treat this just as properly as if it was their own Weyrwoman's queen. He wouldn't hesitate to pull any Candidate, whether it was from High Reaches or not, if they acted out of line. "I just hope the babies are healthy." He quietly confessed to his brown, who was guarding the waters edge off to the side. The brown wasn't going to take any chances and risk any baby making a run to the water -- and a few other dragons had also set up a larger perimeter.

It is a nice day for a Hatching. I hope some of ours Impress. Siriath spoke, fondness and affection lacing his words. The brown dragon did not seem to judge Susurinth -- babies were babies, after all, and the sun was shining, the temperature nice and warm, and there were eager Candidates awaiting their shot at Impression. Once Gr'del stopped thinking about how foolish the goldpair happened to be, he did take a moment to note that peacefulness of this beginning -- the babies would be serenaded by humming dragons, and waves against the shore; the crowds were smaller than in a usual Hatching as there were no guests or visitors -- only chosen numbers from the Weyrs. Tables and chairs had been set up, though many spectators watched while standing, or settled by their dragons for extra shade.

He supposed there could be worse places for a clutch to have been laid.

Dorianus

It was unprecedented and very strange, being moved quickly through the weyr, Gr'del telling them to get dressed and hurry towards the awaiting dragons that were there to take them to the hatching. Where were they going though? It was hard for Dorianus to really catch more then just whispers and words from those he passed. He was ushered onto a light blue dragon, the female rider smiling at him as he and a couple of other candidates climbed aboard.

"Any idea where we are going?" His deep voice asked the question that had been burning in him through all of this process. The brown haired woman smiled at him.

"Fort Hood, there seems to have been a Queen who did not plan her hatching very well." Tyra, the rider who was taking him, smiled and then Orodreth took off from the ground, following other dragons into the air. The blue was humming the entire time they went, jumping between and then finding themselves on a beach near Fort Hold. The dark haired young man looked down, seeing a crowd gathering around, the golden queen among her eggs. The other dragons ferrying the candidates landed a bit away.

Each time there was a hatching, the stoic young man couldn't help but feel excited and yet, there was a slight difference here. They were not on a hatching sands in a weyr, this seemed so very wild and a bit exciting.

"Thanks." He spoke this to Tyra as he slid off of Orodreth's back and then began to walk towards where the other candidates were waiting. No touching had taken place, they knew nothing of the eggs, of who would be picked and yet each of them were hoping on it.

Rizdax

This was not at all what he was expecting for his first official hatching, but Rizdax was there all the same, robe on and head held high as he watched the sands before him. Everything that he had been taught was running through his head in that moment in a rush, not to fight back, not to do anything that might in any way hurt a dragonette. What else was there that he was forgetting? That golds were this huge?

Golden eyes looking up at the golden dragon, the teen felt his head tilt to one side and he pulled his eyebrows together as he tried to focus his thoughts and clear his mind. Things would go so much smoother if he was relaxed in any way. Just to make sure of himself he searched around for Shar or Nalacko or anyone that he could place a friendly face in. Was Renose here?

Gulp. Focus on the eggs, not the dragon that had clutched them from a Weyr he knew nothing about.

------------------------
Etansi

Breathing a gentle sigh of indignation for the rushed way in which she'd arrived on the beach, a dark shadow of a girl stayed at the edges and watched everything warily. Rather than worry about the mother that was close to her eggs, Etansi was focused entirely on the shells as if they were moving. Which they were in some way that was odd to her but didn't seem to faze any of those around her.

Not that they mattered in any way at all. The only things that mattered were the eggs and making certain that her twin was safe and wouldn't be harmed in any way. So help her if any of them tried to claw him up! Only herself or his eventual dragonic partner could touch him, for Etansi wasn't certain that she would find her partner out on the sands this day or ever. What dragon could possibly want her when she was so ruined for society?

Martirae

Having to drop chores suddenly was something Marty was always prepared for.......just usually a bit more so when she knew a Hatching she was due to be part of was imminent. When panicked word had spread through the lower Weyr, there had been a moment of confusion before she'd shoved her broom into the hands of a just as confused Drudge and was running off to change. It wouldn't be the first time she hadn't looked her particular best for a hatching, but.....it was the first time she'd stood without a touching.

The unknown was laying out ahead of them and Martirae's mind spent a moment trying to assess the situation, even as the greenrider that had brought her and two other candidates (one of which wouldn't shut up, even when she'd snapped at him to twice). The sand was warm underfoot, less than hot like the Hatching Sands were, and she idly considered going without her sandals - but perhaps sandals were important as part of decorum. Not that anything about this was standard in any way.

Yet with the eggs laid out ahead of them, Marty easily fell into a role she'd taken up so many times before. Even with a touching, she knew how to stand and be ready - standing tall and proud. Show us, little ones, what you have to show for us.

------

Papys

The dark haired girl that had flown over with him wasn't much of a talker, Papys' had decided even as he still followed Martirae onto the sands to take a spot next to her. "Y'know, I think this is the first time I've seen something like this!" he said, a smile permanently attached to his face. "Want to make bets on if you'll impress one of them?" he asked.

Marty shot him a dark look. "Seriously, this is not the time for idle chatter, you absolute idiot," she chastised. "Go stand with the boys."

But he didn't.

-----

Kinyegele

She'd not stood for a Hatching before, but she'd seen enough of the process to know that a sudden call out for Candidates to go to the middle of nowhere unexpectedly without a touching was...not how her first Standing was supposed to go. Still, Kinye was there and hopefully at least her standing brothers and Ashlyn would be there too, right?

Oh, she was so nervous! Would this be her only go? What would the babies be like?

Would it be bloody?

----

Juhvek/Alosha of Green Phaedrath

"Well they chose an awful time," Juhvek said as he joined his sister on her green. Phaedrath was none too pleased about the disorder of this entire mess and let her rider know all about it. Still, as they snapped Between and landed on the beach, the broad man had all but accepted that this was happening.

He was not as excited, at least on the surface, as many of the others who were gathering on the beach.

Go impress me a nice bronze, mmm? Phaedrath suggested to the young man and Juhvek gave the pale green a long look, brows slowly lowering over his eyes. "No," he said plainly and Alosha howled with laughter at the sudden surge of startle from the green. Didn't...didn't every boy want a bronze? He pat her side. "Maybe I'll let one chew on me for you," he suggested.

He's joking, right? Phaedrath asked her rider privately. Alosha sent back a mental shrug. He may well be serious.

"Well, if you have to get chewed on, Juv, at least do it to protect one of the others, yeah?" she teasingly suggested. Her brother nodded as he moved to join the others assembled on the beach, fussing the sheet he was wearing, then glancing up at the sky above.

He could have been working on Flamethrowers right now.

----

W'dre of Bronze Dormith

The massive bronze settled in the sands, pausing to offer a bow to the new mother-to-be with a sweep of his wings before he allowed any of his passengers off into the sands. "If you need help carrying anything, let me know," W'dre said with his almost scratchy voice. He was still coming off the edges of the sickness that had spread through High Reaches, but he'd known better than to not offer to help bring the most important support staff.

There was no pomp and circumstance to ignore this time. Nobody cared about appearances, but a few healers and some kitchen workers were always needed - and they could more than help in that.

Luiciand

It had been bewildering when G’rel came with instructions to get ready for a hatching. However, Luiciand was used to impromptu drills and quickly fell into place. He found himself on an island beach looking at what really was a Hatching in a side semicircle around the eggs.

Well, then. He gave an extra bow to the Queen because he couldn’t remember if he had bowed initially. He was anxious. This was a strange queen. Who knew what she expected. What would the eggs be like? They hadn’t been touched by the candidates. He had heard stories of the most recent Western Hatching. Would it be similar today?

Over the last year, he had done a lot of thinking and learning and was ready to accept any color that chose him. It was only fair to the dragon and himself.

Akaris

Akaris was not prepared for this. Not at all.

Honestly, she wouldn't even have been prepared for a normal Hatching, not yet, not after everything that had happened with Western's last clutch. Shards, she wouldn't even have been prepared for a Touching! So that was...one bright side, maybe? Because she was definitely not ready for another one of those. But there were a lot of unknowns here: strange Queen, strange eggs, strange place - a clutch on an island beach? Really?

It was beautiful, certainly, and there was a soothing element to their surroundings, but it was nearly drowned out by confusion, and a good helping of fear that she didn't have time to process or deal with just now. She'd hesitated to come because of it, but...A'ral would be there, at least. And if High Reaches candidates were to be in attendance as well, she could see Rylyrr! She could hold his hand this time, instead.

Between wary glances at the unfamiliar gold, she kept an eye out for him. As tall as he was, he'd be impossible to miss!

Jacquol

Okay, now THIS was a territory Jacquol was familiar with! Previous stints of sea-sailing had made her more aware than most of some of these tropical (blazing hot!) islands. Somewhere near Southern Boll? Right? She'd been dragged onto a dragon with little warning at all, been flung through between with just her robes in her arms, and now this? Well! It wasn't at all what shed imagined doing today—her little meetup with a certain strapping blond would have to wait—but it would do! Oh how it would do.

A quick moment to don the robes and she was striding out with the rest. "Bit of a close one there, huh?" She chuckled at the gold even as she bowed. "Nah, best to keep'm guessin' until the end! A fine surprise for everyone!" She elbowed the nearest candidate, eyes wild with excitement and toothy grin in place. "Warm enough, ey? Think they'll hatch, or bake?" And what a colorful batch they were too. Though...hopefully less aggressive than the last. The memory of blood sobered her...but only a little. The sun just felt SO good, and she stretched, languid and feline, as she casually kept shifting her weight to keep either foot from roasting.

Oseathiol

He shouldn't be here. He had a schedule to keep and the lord holder would be rather cross if he was late, but oh! Who could keep from checking out rumors of a wild clutch! Fort was the one he'd heard it from, news travelling quickly up the harper vine, as always, but he'd never known just where it was, or when it'd hatch, or even if it would. Rumor had it that the eggs had been abandoned, had been forgotten, were stolen, any rumor you could imagine was in play. And now, of course, on a day where thread was falling over Fort, the lost-stolen-abandoned-mystery eggs were hatching! It was only luck that he'd been there when one of the dragons in his caravan had perked up, catching a hum or a thought from the growing throng of dragons rushing to drop off supplies and people.

And really, what sort of harper would he be if he didn't chase down the story of the turn? It was easy enough to ply the rider for a drop-off, and he'd had the marks to spare, buying a few large sides of meat from his own caravan to bring along. A gift, in thanks for his allowed observance! His notebook had been in hand, quill flying before his feet even hit the sands. This would make an amazing ballad, or maybe even a full play! The dual dull thuds of the meat slabs hitting the sands startled him from the frantic writing a moment later though. "Oh...right. Uhm...uhm, excuse me?"

With all the bravery of a wilting wallflower, he called out to the nearest rider who looked like they knew what they were doing. "I've brought...this. Where...? Uh, what needs done with it?" He motioned to the large bundle of meat, though he made no move to pick it up...for a moment. Then with an audible 'oh!' and a rather clumsy effort of shoving his book into his bag, he grabbed up one of the slabs, holding it rather gingerly, as if the raw meat was instead something about to explode. "For, for the little ones...?"

"And this is why one shouldn't Impress outside of a Weyr," Z'tir explained to his daughter disapprovingly. "My dear, observe how the Weyrs have been forced to scramble to save this clutch." And never do the same yourself. There is nothing wrong with these eggs, Siloth disagreed gently, keeping his thoughts carefully directed to his rider alone. Not the eggs, perhaps, but the rider and Queen? Tch.

A disgraceful showing. "Zelaya, note that Fort Weyr is absent. A more sensible clutch would have waited for its rightful Candidates." Perhaps Z'tir existed to be disapproving... but then again, he did not have a high opinion of a Queenrider who did not have the sense to track her dragon's cycle! What a wretched position to put her Gold in, the more fool she!

Not that he believed most women were capable of the sort of reasoning required to avoid a catastrophe of this ilk on their own, but most had proper training. Or, at minimum, passable training. None could compare to High Reaches, of course. Lady Zheria showed uncommon good sense, and a keen wit that not even he could deny. Siloth circled down, landing between the clutch and the sea, that his bulk could lend a greater barrier betwixt the two.

Rylyrr

This was not at all how he thought the last few months of his candidacy would go and he wasn't sure if he should be rightly worried being carted off last minute by his elder brothers tag teaming him to the middle of no where. And it was hot and gleaming and thread was near by. Or just over joy that he had another chance though out in the middle of no where.

It would also help if Aly'on would stop fussing. Rylyrr broke himself out of his thoughts to carefully break out of his brother's fussing. "I'm fine, Aly'on really." He said finally, making sure to brush down his robe and checked to make sure his sandals were on properly to protect from the rather overwhelming heat.

Sure he was at least halfway decent, he walked over to the other candidates. Here they were, in the middle of nowhere, with strange eggs that he had not touched and had no idea of their temperaments, and it was his last chance, probably, since no other queen had risen and lets.. not dwell on that.

Esfir

If anyone had told her only a few days prior that she'd be standing on an island near South Boll, waiting for a clutch of eggs to hatch, Esfir would have very kindly told that person that their glows were dim and then offered to walk them to the Weyr Healer. And yet, here she was, having just scrambled into her robes. Taking a moment to bow to the queen and her rider, Esfir wondered a little at the speed things were happening. There hadn't been any warning, no Touching. Just a sudden flurry of dragon wings and yelling riders demanding Candidates and speed.

She'd even heard that High Reaches was sending Candidates. It was all very interesting, really.

Glancing around, she wished she had the time to explore the island. It was so beautiful! The poor queen had certainly picked a lovely place to clutch...

Shifting from one foot to the other, Esfir found herself studying the colodrful shells and hoping that the babies within would be a little calmer than the last batch she'd stood for. Please don't let anyone die this time, she thought to herself.

Farellen was helping in the infirmary when the call came in that a Gold had clutched on an island near Fort Weyr and the eggs were now about to hatch, he sent the next few minutes begging the healers to let him help, he could carry things with his good arm, his flits were excellent therapy pets, having been with him during his entire recovery, his broken arm was now out of it's splint but was thinner and weaker than the other but a strict routine of therapy meant it WAS getting stronger. Eventually his pleading made the busy healers give way, throwing a bag of bandages and lighter supplies his way, making him promise to do EXACTLY what he was told and to keep out of the way if needed. He vehemently promised, thanking them immensely, he might not be allowed to Stand at a clutch but there was no way he was going to miss one if he could help it and at least this way, he could make himself useful instead of just sitting around, hoping for something that might not happen. He just prayed to Faranth that this one wasn't going to be anywhere near as violent as the last one. He mounted the dragon behind the healer he was assigned to help, his stomach churning with excitement .. and more than a little nervousness.

Bekah was busy being shown how to stitch deep wounds on a patient that had been stupid with a knife while cutting up meat for his flit when the uproar happened about a clutch, she tried not to focus on that and on the task at hand, literally since she was stitching the numbed fleshy hand that had been cut deep enough you could see the bones of the youth's hand, but thankfully hadn't seemed to do any major damage around it and, if she got this right, would make a full recovery. When she was done she stepped back and let the healer she was currently training under take a look at her work, he ummed and aaahed over it for a full minute, asking the man to move his hand and clench (gently) a few times before declaring her work adequate, which from this healer, was great praise indeed. "now get yourself ready girl, we got a hatchin' to attend.. and you fool, stop flirting when cutting, you're lucky you didn't lose your thumb" he snapped. Turning his back on the patient and preparing his bags. Bekah rushed to do the same, Hatchings were always scary, exciting things, full of new opportunities to learn more about emergency healing. She was nervous because of what she'd heard about the last hatching, over at the other Weyr. She prayed that wasn't going to happen here, to her, on her shift but it was always beautiful to see the Impressions. When ready, she mounted the assigned dragon to them, and was away, holding her breath for the journey Between and emerged into the hot climate. Once off the dragon she hurried to the healer tables, frowning at a boy, a candidate? with an eye patch and a bunch of flits hovering around, carrying things to and fro. She'd left hers at home, knowing they weren't usually allowed on the Sands.

Rokar was busy with regular candidate duties when the call came in for them to get ready, Rokar questioned why quietly and was told that a gold had clutched on a beach far away on an island and was requesting candidates be brought from all weyrs since her eggs were about to hatch. Rokar grunted at that, "be lucky if any hatch" he grumbled, tunnelsnakes and all sorts could get under the eggs on a shaffing BEACH.... he wondered at the intelligence of a Gold that clutched on a beach ... however he got himself ready anyway, volunterring to go, preferring to become a Wherhandler, as he understood them better but going through the motions, maybe if he attended enough and got passed over, he could convince the candidatemaster to let him drop out. (but secretly he hoped there was a dragon for him) In his own, hoarse, quiet way he found out which dragons were transporting candidates, and so, with his pack, 'boarded' his transport and arrived at the clutch, no eggs hatched today? hmm .. was that a good thing or a bad thing he wondered.

Zelaya

"Yes, father." A step to the left and a pace behind Z'tir, the young woman was keeping quietly unobtrusive. She'd been brought along with many of her fellow candidates, but she had not moved to join them—nor had she donned the white robes of her kind. Instead she had remained near the side of the bronzerider who'd delivered her, observant and alert, if disengaged from the general panic. These eggs, after all, were not for her. "She seems composed enough, the golden one..." The gold dragon did look at ease, though already the young woman could feel the heat of the island..."I can't say the heat here would be conducive to any sort of long-term stay, for the potential riders."

"I wonder why she didn't come to a weyr..." Though in truth Zelaya could easily understand why a weyr would turn folks off. It was a lot of...a lot. People, movement, talking. She sympathized, if all the woman wanted was to be alone and enjoy the quiet of nature. Though she'd never say it, especially not to Z'tir. "Her eggs would have been safe there. And more properly minded." Though it was good of Fort to keep this island safe too. Why hadn't they just absorbed the gold and her rider? It didn't make sense to her.

"Why would anyone want to live outside a weyr, or a hold?"
