This last lesson had been one that C'ryn was looking forward to, one that he figured he would be pretty good at. His father had taught him how to handle a blade from a pretty early age, as soon as he could safely handle a blade. Dueling was something he knew he would be good at and the young bronzerider made sure he listened to what V'mel told them and then paired off like they should. Of course during the lesson, though he worked with his partner, he was looking over the rest of the weyrlings taking note of how they were each doing.

Perhaps it was a by-product of how much Aresoth cared and wanted to take care of his siblings, but C'ryn wanted to make sure if one of his fellow weyrlings needed help, he was there to offer it. His eyes were drawn to G'ran during this, noting that the man seemed to be having trouble.

It was easy enough to see that the larger man was use to fighting with his hands instead of with a sword. He didn't seem comfortable with it and any finesse that it took seemed to annoy him some. C'ryn watched all of this during the lesson and once it was over, he moved towards him.

"G'ran." He inclined his head to the man, showing respect for him, he was a fellow weyrling and just because he was on a brown, one color below him, did not mean he didn't deserve respect. "I...I noticed you seemed to be having some trouble." He was trying to figure out the best way to word this and not make it seem like he wanted to poke any fun at the man. It certainly wasn't his intent. "You helped Aresoth and I by showing us extra exercises and, I want to offer and help you with this." He knew G'ran kept to himself and only really seemed close to Ichta and Nadry, but C'ryn wanted to let the man know that he was there for him as well. He wanted to be his friend, even if their dragons did seem to have a rivalry going on between them.

The only 'weapon' he'd ever held in his hands had been a mining pick, and even that was a whole different style of motion and force than a blade. The tension in his shoulders was apparent, causing his movements to be a little rigid even as he swung around once he heard his name. "C'ryn," He grunted, and after a moment of exhaling his irritation, nodded back at the young man. Though Elzebuth and Aresoth had good reason to be rivals, C'ryn had been nothing but respectful and polite. He didn't think he'd ever be good with people, but he found that he didn't have to be quite so wary with his fellow weyrling.

It took him a while to reply, a trait that often made people think he was dim-witted. In truth, he was mulling over the offer, seeing the sense in it. Though he hadn't helped C'ryn with the expectation of being paid back one day. Still, the bronzerider wasn't the type to boast, and if he wanted to aid him... G'ran exhaled again, this time more weary than anything. "Alright." He didn't offer a smile, but some of the tension drained out of him at the prospect of being instructed by someone with more experience. Not that V'del wasn't a good teacher--G'ran just... needed some extra practice, and if he could do it without having to approach the Weyrlingmaster directly, he'd do it.

"The blade feels clunky." He grunted. "Not used to using something to fight with." If C'ryn really had been wielding a blade since he was young, however, maybe he had tips...

Seeing G'ran tensed, his movements rigid was a normal thing to C'ryn, as well as a grunted terse response to any questions. He never took it as a slight, how the man acted, it was just how G'ran was and part of what made him different from everyone else. He had quite a lot of respect for the brownrider as well, though he wondered if he would ever say it out loud, not now anyway. Though it was more the fact that having another weyrling speak of respecting you was all well and good it couldn't do much, even if that weyrling was a bronzerider. No, he was already formulating plans in the back of his mind about when he became a wingleader, who his first second would be.

C'ryn waited patiently for G'ran to respond, not wanting to rush him. He was happy letting him talk at his own pace, moving too quickly wasn't good for anyone either way.

"It can be, especially when you first hold one." He moved to pick up one of the dulled practice swords they used, his hand closing around the blade, turning it around as he walked back to G'ran. "You may even have to get one specially made as well, the hilt for one that anyone can use might not fit the hand size. If there is too much space, or to little, it can really mess up your grip." Stopping in front of G'ran, he turned the sword again, holding the blade in his hand and offering the hilt to the man.

"The weight of the blade and hilt may also cause some of the problem as well. The hardest part is thinking of the blade as an extension of yourself, not just a blade." Lord he hoped he was making sense, it was easy enough for him to go through the motions but trying to put things into words to try and help someone understand...He didn't figure he was cut out to be a teacher but shard it, he was going to help G'ran.

He was, admittedly, both unused to the bronzerider's patience and pleased with it, so used to being prompted to speak after only seconds had passed. Better yet, he'd never sensed any disdain or judgement from C'ryn--something that would have gotten his back up faster than anything else. He watched quietly as the man retrieved a practice weapon, frowning to himself with thought. He hadn't considered a custom blade, but his hands were a good bit larger than most people's... He accepted the weapon, making sure to keep the point dropped so he wouldn't stab anyone accidentally with it.

"The weight is different." He agreed, stepping back so he could safely heft the blade upright. An extension of himself, though... He sighed. "So extra practice might help. Just going over techniques again and again until it feels natural."

If that was what C'ryn had meant, it made sense to him. If he kept thinking of it as a clunky, sharding piece of metal, that was all it was going to stay. "It's not just like swinging a stick though, either." There were deliberate ways to swing a sword... or, so he was gathering.

Once G'ran had taken the handle from him, C'ryn moved to grab another practice sword. He tested the weight in his hands, not disliking it but it was different from his own sword. Turning it over in his hands he moved to stand before G'ran again, listening to him.

"Extra practice helps everything honestly." He knew that for a fact. He practices aerial drills in his mind as well as in the air with Aresoth. It was different not working with other dragons but as of now it was the only way to make sure he knew them in and out.

A smile appeared on C'ryn's face, genuine at G'ran's words about swinging a stick. "No it isn't, though I suppose you could use it like that. It will probably knock someone out but not cut through them." He held the sword out again, the one he was holding, showing it off some. "This is a longsword, one of the most fairly common swords out there. It isn't made for cutting through things so you don't really swing it when fighting, you thrust the end."

"So it's a little bit like throwing a punch but instead of your fist being the end point you have the blade." He moved so he was standing beside G'ran now. He took a stance, his legs parted with his right leg forward, the blade held tightly in his right hand. "It isn't different from throwing a good punch either." He raised the sword and pulled his arm back before thrusting the blade forward. "It's a really easy move, just thrusting it forward." He lowered the blade to turn his head to G'ran. "Just go like you are going to punch someone, but you have a longer reach."

He hoped he was making sense, it was along the same lines of how his father taught him. The first things were working on the easiest thrusting maneuver, so he could look over his stance as well as grip, though V'mel had worked on that as well. Then it was adjusting to make it easier for G'ran to do, help him develop his own style that followed the guidelines.

Hope this isn't going too in depth. lol. Also C'ryn is kind of teaching him based off of what I'm finding about the German school of fencing, if you want to look over that. ^^

Practice, practice, practice. It was a comfortable staple, if he was being honest. He had plenty of time for practice. The smile from C'ryn put him more at ease, if anything, and he studied the length of the blade closely once it was held out. "Oh." So this wasn't a tool for just hacking and slashing, either. The mention of throwing a punch had a more thoughtful look flickering through his eyes, taking that in with interest. He carefully observed the smaller man's stance, slowly shifting his stance to mirror him. "Useful." He grunted. A long reach sometimes made all the distance in a fight.

Turning safely away from C'ryn, G'ran first mirrored the move slowly... and then swung out hard as if throwing a punch, hearing the air whistle as the blade sliced through it. After a moment, he nodded, already feeling the difference. So this is what he'd meant by an extension of his body... Noticing that the man was watching him, G'ran repeated the motion a few more times. He certainly had the power behind it, but his grip would need adjusting. After all, it wasn't exactly like throwing a punch.

Still. It was clear to see that he was already feeling significantly better about himself. He knew how to hit things quite well, in his opinion.

A basic thrust, the easiest movement to master, as well as the easiest to block. C'ryn was glad G'ran seemed to be able to grasp that well. A thrust that was like a punch was easier to grasp then learning to leverage the hilt with two hands to make the cutting motions.

"You're getting the hang of it." He was still smiling as well. "You're a great student, take to this pretty easily as well." He was sure it had a lot more to do with G'ran being a good listener and student then it ever had to do with him being a good teacher. He watched the grip that G'ran had on the hilt before he moved forward a bit more. "I think you might be able to handle something different."

He raised the sword again, his right hand gripping the hilt but he then put his left on the pommel. "Thrusts are the easiest part to learn, but while not normally used to cut, it can be used for that as well. Especially if they are going to block. It really isn't that much harder, you use your dominate hand." He raised his right hand, the one that had been holding the hilt. "To guide it along where you want to go, but all the power comes from your off hand." His left was raised. "So you put it on the pommel, the end of the sword."

"So, for an over-cut.." He raised the sword so that it was sticking up in the air and then brought it straight down, extending his arms as he did so. It ended with the sword down near the ground.

Found a better manual...so some of what C'ryn said in the last post isn't exactly true. lol. Here!

The big man made a gruff sound, silently pleased by the praise. He didn't think C'ryn was the sort to needlessly flatter, and it felt good to finally feel like he was conquering this hated weapon.

More explanations, and he gave the younger man his full attention, slowly mirroring his moves. So... the power from the off hand, helping to stop the blow if attempting to block. The explanation made sense, and he nodded once before attempting an overhead slash. Sword up, and-- The blade cut through the air, and he tightened his muscles to keep the tip from slamming into the ground.

"Maybe you should be a teacher." He muttered, nodding quietly with approval. This already felt much better than his clumsy attempts before.

Raising his free hand, C'ryn rubbed the back of his head some, shaking it left and right a little as well. "I don't know about that. All I'm doing is trying to explain it the way it was explained to me." It just seemed normal enough to him for things to go the way it did. He was glad that G'ran was able to get this so easily, the larger man had power enough in his frame. C'ryn was sure he could probably cut through a tree with the right blade in his hand.

After a moment of this, with C'ryn going over a couple of guards, he turned to look at G'ran. "I think you've gotten the hang of the basics." The sword in his right hand was lightly bobbing as he jostled it some, a habit that just kept his hand busy. "How about a quick and friendly spar? The best way to know if you really have anything down is to put it into practice against some one else, of course." It was why they had to eventually go through a blooding, and other Threadfalls before they were put into wings and graduated. Breathing flame down here was one thing, but being up in the sky and against the enemy during a fall was another thing.

Waiting for G'ran's answer, C'ryn was going over a couple of other things in his head. The fact that G'ran had needed his help didn't diminish the respect he felt for the other man. He didn't know much about him, wasn't close to him or really speak to him much outside of lessons, but C'ryn respected him. He was a strong man, and with hindsight the only one that could have been perfect for Elzebuth. There was no way C'ryn or any other could have handled that headstrong dragon, and that was one of the reasons the respect had grown so much. He couldn't help but wish some that, he was better friends with G'ran, but the rivalry between Aresoth and Elzebuth made that difficult. Oh well, having respect for the other man was well enough for him.
