Darkness reigned over the land. Clouds, blacker than black, hung low across the sky. Howling winds blew them to and fro, causing them to swirl into foreboding shapes. Thunder and lightning cracked and boomed in every direction. The angry chorus of the heavens filled the air for miles. Rain pelted harsh and strong upon the earth. Waters of streams and rivers raged. Their white-capped waves crashed and wailed against sand and stone. So intense was the storm that the nary an animal could be found amidst it, having long since taken cover in their sheltered homes. Indeed, only one being could be found struggling against the high winds and roaring rain. A small pink Usdia with dark cream stripes strode laboriously through the storm. Booberry Puff had been out gathering some saplings for her garden when the inclement weather chose to unleash its fury. In hindsight, she should’ve known better than to push her luck as she had. It had been that troublesome vine. If she hadn’t taken the time to free the young tree from the vine’s clutches, then she might’ve well been home by now. But she couldn’t leave the poor thing to fend against the ever-encroaching presence. That endeavor took her nearly an hour’s time to cut back the tendrils and make certain the tree could gather its proper nutrients without further hindrance. She was halfway to her and her mate’s abode when the storm broke loose.

Boo huffed into the wind, coming to a stop beside a large boulder. “I won’t be able to make it at this rate,” she sighed heavily. Her turquoise eyes glanced worriedly at the satchel strapped to her side. The saplings were likely to be waterlogged by the time she reached home. If they weren’t already. At which point, they wouldn’t survive the transplant into the garden. I need to find some place to take shelter until this storm passes, the mare heaved another sigh. If she remembered correctly, there was a cave just a short distance away. She could make it there within the next few minutes and, hopefully, save the saplings from a watery fate. Boo felt lucky that the satchel in which they resided was of sturdier material or else she would’ve lost them at the outset. Drawing in a readying breath, she gave a curt nod, “Okay, just a little further till we can wait this thing out.” She started out once again. Her neck bent low, hooves digging into the softened earth, she pressed into the gale. Seconds felt like minutes and minutes hours. Finally, through the haze of rain and wet-slicked bangs, she spotted the cave ahead of her, slightly off to the left. With a neigh of delight, she picked up the pace as best she could, feeling a surge of relief.

As she drew within a few yards, however, something strange drew her focus. Setting beside the cave were two objects. They were indistinct at first, appearing no larger than the satchel she carried. Their colors blended with the earthy tones of the rock and soil. Shaking her head, Boo tried to blink away the water dribbling into her eyes. Eyes which grew wide in shock as she realized what it was she was actually seeing. Two baskets, one gray and one brown, sat nestled next to the rock wall mere feet away from the cave entrance. The mare looked all around, searching for some sign of their parents’ presence. She saw none. “Who would be so foolish to leave baskets out like this?” It made no sense. Not with the entrance to a shelter so close by. Had they-- Boo didn’t want to think it, but the thought had already been conjured. Had they been abandoned here? A surge of anger and panic arose in her. If that were true… Now’s not the time to think about it. I need to get these little ones to safety. She jumped into action without hesitation. Charging forward, the little Usdia stuck her nose to the ground and carefully pushed the wicker basket to the drier confines of the cave. She counted her blessings there were no obstructions to cause detour. Once the first was secured inside, she repeated the process for the second, making sure both were huddled together towards the back of the cave, well away from the dour weather.

Well this only took me forever to get up and running. I'm so sorry for the extreme delay, Lyda!

There was . . . movement. And a the two together were apart for a moment, agitating them. Then the wet stopped. The grey basket started shaking, making brazen, loud noises. The tan basket was still, the single sound it emitted was calm but deep. The grey basket seemed relaxed by the reassuring noise and it stopped moving, only a small calling sound resonating from it. The tan answers with the same noise as before. Then both baskets fall silent, resting.

Booberry paced the front of the cave anxiously. The two baskets were still wet from the downpour. Yet there was nothing in the vicinity she could use to make them warm. She herself was still very damp from being caught in the same tumultuous weather. The most she could offer was body heat, and that would not be saying much considering her size. Her width and length was not much greater than those of the two baskets combined. Honestly, she huffed, glancing at the little ones. To be so irresponsible as to leave two baskets alone like that. Never had she seen something so foolish done before. Whoever the parents were, they required some serious help in learning how to be good at the title. “No proper parent would leave baskets unattended, especially out in the open…” Their resting place had not only left them exposed to the elements, but any manner of creature could have found them. As it stood, they had been fortunate it had been Boo and not a Skinwalker or someone prone to evil ways.

The pink and tan Usdia sighed wearily, halting her pacing at last. Her turquoise gaze fell once more upon the twin baskets which now rested peacefully near the rear of the cave. They had been agitated at first. It was clear they were not used to being apart, even for a moment. The grey basket appeared to be more anxious than the tan one. The latter of which emanated a calming presence to its sibling. Boo imagined it would be the elder when they emerged from the wicker confines. It was not guaranteed, of course, but it did give such a sense. “Well then,” she shook her matted bangs from her face. “Pacing angrily will not to help us.” Although, Boo did quite enjoy how well it burnt off her suddenly excessive energy. Energy that, in the end she knew, she would need to save. “The storm doesn’t seem as if it’ll abate anytime soon. In the meantime, all I can do is provide what little comfort I can.” The mare heaved another sigh, shaking her head, before striding over to her charges. “I am here little ones,” Boo cooed as she nestled close. “Do not be frightened. You are safe with me in this cave. We’ll wait here until the storm abates and we can find your parents, okay?” Taking her muzzle, she gently nudged twigs and leaves from the baskets’ surfaces. A faint tune of a lullaby thrummed in her throat, filling the cave as she curled around the two.

LydaLynn

There was . . . noise. And an outside warmth that wasn't the other basket. It was soothing, inviting. Strange.

The grey basket starts shaking a little, moving. A small, curious noise bubbling from it. The tan basket sounds an almost cautious note. The grey basket becomes a little more bold in its movements. The foal in the tan basket seems to almost sigh and also starts to move.

Both baskets start wiggling, the young lives inside moving, stretching. Clearly they are curious and intent on exploring this newness outside of themselves.

The smaller mare had just settled down amidst the baskets when they began to stir. She lifted her heads, staring intently at the baskets. Their movements had been subtle at first. The grey basket moved cautiously though with purpose. The tan one took a moment longer; ultimately, with a sense of trepidation, it too began to shift and jitter. Their actions grew more bold at each turn. Boo jumped to her hooves once more. Panic started to bubble in her chest. Oh no! It’s not time for them to pop yet, is it?! She did not know what to do. If the foals were to exit the safety of their baskets before their parents returned…the situation would become more complicated. She was not their mother. Would they assume her to be so? Of course, if they did, it was a simple matter of explaining the circumstances to the young ones, as best as she could to such young ones that is. “Shhh…no, no, little ones,” Boo tried to quell the inhabitants of the wicker baskets. “It isn’t time for you to come out yet. You must wait for your parents to come back. You wouldn’t want to deny them the pleasure of seeing your birth, right?” Her voice was low, hushed, as if speaking in that way would cause them to quieten. Where are those delinquent parents, anyway? She could not help but huff in annoyance. There had yet to be hide or hair of the Soquili responsible for the two. Boo thought they might return shortly, might desire to check on their young ones; alas, however, the weather continued to rage without a sign. It worried Boo. If only Lys were here… Her mate would be able to search for the irresponsible parents while she stayed with her newfound charges. As it stood, she was forced to wait, and to hope the foals would bide their time a little while longer.

It was a worry that was not allayed. The baskets continued to shudder and quake. The tiny inhabitants inside seemed all the more eager to seek the outside world, to experience life outside of their secured confines. Booberry feared it to be the case. How long was it possible for them to shift and rock as they were without breaking free? Surely, it would be just a matter of minutes before the lives within greeted her. The very thought sent shivers pulsing through the Usdia. A mixture of fear and…elation?...welled in her spirit. It would be proper for the true parents of the baskets to be the first to lay eyes on their little ones. However, with no indication of their return, there was nothing for it but to bare witness in their stead should the foals choose to make their grand entrance. It was a moment she did so yearn for but had thus far been denied. Would it be wrong of her to enjoy the occasion? She had to wonder if it might be. Not that there was anything she could do to prevent their arrival. The foals would emerge whenever they decided and by no other's timeline.

Sorry for double quotes. I wanted to add a bit more.
