Ionan knew that it had been Kinye’s nameday recently, and his coming up. Was the proximity in their namedays the reason for their closeness? He’d never cared enough to ask. He loved Kinye, she was his favorite of his sisters. He wanted to make this celebration special. She was sixteen! That was supposed to be an important age, wasn’t he? He wasn’t sure. He was never sure about that sort of thing.

But there was one thing he was sure of; Kinye loved bubblypies. They’d made them together, he recalled,their fingers had been covered in berry juice. He didn’t think anyone was as fond of them as they were. Not even T’rel. Speaking of T’rel, he’d been careful to invite his siblings and parents.

He had convinced Demanthra’s friend—boyfriend? To help him carry the tray of bubblypies to a table in the dining hall. He hoped Kinye would enjoy this!

Despite getting a little bit older, Kinyegele didn't actually feel any closer to being a grown up. Maybe that was because of Candidate lessons where there were people her age that actually seemed like grown ups - like that Bronzerider's kids. Oh, they seemed very grown up (even if one of them seemed entirely unpleasant) compared to her at least. Did that say more about them than I did about her?

Or did she simply have unreasonable expectations of what being 'grown up' meant?

There were a lot of thoughts to mull about as she sat in the dining hall with one of her pieces of paper, drawing some of the other people in the hall with the keen eye that at least showed she had some talent if she put her nose to the grindstone a bit more. Though Kinye sometimes wondered if it would really come to that. Her confidence in her future had remained somewhat shaken by the questionaire that Gr'del had them fill out so long ago - and that she couldn't answer the question of why she wanted a dragon.

Maybe she'd fill a bit more grown up when she had the answer to that.
