Enyo had been in the shallows with her sister for a while now. They had adjusted to their life near the water's surface. It was vastly different from their life in the depths, from the horrors that had been hidden in the inky black water. Ker had been with her through every step of the way, even when hope had seem to be lost, a true rock in her tumultuous life.
Eventually she had met Erebus, the only other seathi she had met that shared her and her sister's link to the Deep One. He was plagued with nightmares in which the monster spoke to him and she was there to support and anchor him back in reality. They were safe from the horrible creature, they couldn't be hurt by its rumbling calls any longer. For someone who had never believed herself worth of love, she couldn't help but feel a flutter in her heart when she was near him.
Today she was out gathering food with Ker, tending to the thriving coral reef that wasn't too far off from where she, her sister, and her lifemate resided. "The reef seems to be bustling more so than usual today. Perhaps we will bring in a greater haul than usual, Ker."

Erebus had a hard time adjusting to life outside of the depths. He was still plagued with nightmares fueled by the Deep One's call and had a hard time trusting anyone and anything that moved. It was best to remain distant and aloof, rather than forge lasting bonds... at least that's what he had told himself in the beginning. In the end, he had crossed paths with the two sisters that came from a long line of Speakers of the Abyss, touched by the Deep One just as he was. Enyo and Deino, with their familiars, had been unexpected companions. Although he had continued to remain distant from the four of them, the two seathi and their koi followers, Erebus had found himself drawn to them and decided to stick around if just to appease the Deep One's nagging at the back of his mind.
Erebus was cold and often unwilling to associate with others, but he had found something between himself and Enyo. The two seathi formed a bond that was unlike any other the stallion had ever experienced. Though they weren't the traditional couple, falling head-over-hoof in their romance for one another, Erebus swore to protect the mare in any and every way he could, and she kept him grounded and sane against the calls of the Deep One.
Often times, he avoided activity during the daytime, hating the intensity of the sun at such shallow depths, but he had been coaxed out from the shadowy shelter that he, Enyo, Deino, and the two mares' familiars spent their nights in. Enyo was off gathering food in the reef and while he could join her, he was more interested in spending time by himself for the day. Erebus contented himself to spending his day looking out over the reef's shelf into the darkening waters beneath them, keeping both a watchful eye on the deeper waters and leaving himself to meditate and gather his thoughts. Even if it was just a temporary measure, Meditation seemed to be the only way to quiet the Deep One's growls in his mind.

Enyo was content with what she had gathered, finding a satisfying amount of kelp for them to eat and even weave in to crafted products. She wasn't much of a hunter, having a difficult time creeping up on the fish that called the reef their home. While Enyo had chosen sacrificial lambs with her sister Deino, there had been no fight involved. They were simply there to evaluate their neighbors and find the perfect specimen to send to the Deep One's ever hungering maw. The sisters had never had to collect the sacrifice themselves and they had been quite pampered before their family and the elders had turned against them.
The mare seemed to lose herself in her thoughts, her movements coming to a still as she reflected on the life they had lived, the choices they had made, and how terrible she had been. Even though it had been nearly a year since the terror of the Deep One and her and her sister's escape from their village in the depths, Enyo was still plagued by the terrible guilt that would no doubt follow her for the rest of her life. She would never be able to wash herself of the sins that she had committed.
"Enyo, we are not alone."
Ker's clear voice brought the seathi from her haze and she carefully turned her head to scan the reef for the disturbance the koi had detected. "Then we must be careful," Enyo hummed. "These waters are not usually graced by dangerous creatures, but we shall be vigilant, Ker."
Quickly, the dark patterned mare did her best to conceal herself behind a rather tall and thick growth of coral, keeping a careful eye out for the presence that Ker had sensed. "Ker, can you scout ahead?"
"Of course. I will return swiftly." The koi fish circled her bonded, gently caressing the seathi in a sign of assurance to ease Enyo's worried mind, and swam a head towards the source of the movement she had seen. Ker kept herself protected behind kelp and coral, silver eyes searching for their visitor.
Eventually she spotted him. It was a seathi male, his bright red coloration popping out among the yellows, pinks, greens, and blues that composed the reef. She didn't dare approach the seathi, simply wanting to observe him from a safe distance for the time being.
