Once, The Dark Knight and the Forgemaster were great friends. However, as the Forgemaster grew in skill and popularity, the Dark Knight grew jealous. The details of his betrayal are lost now, only known to the Forgemaster who dares not even speak his name. Still, the Dark Knight wanders the woods to the South of the Forge, hoping to run the Forgemaster out of business by removing his clientele. He is undefeated, but maybe you have what it takes.

Hearth Umber had heard about the Dark Knight, an old adversary of the Forgemaster, once friends. At first he had thought to try the Dark Knight all by himself, but he'd met another going on the same quest--Remiel.


He had never met the stallion or his bonded before but they seemed nice enough. Naturally, he didn't know how well the other stallion fought or what his style was, but two heads and two swords were better than one. Plus there was the two small creatures.

They had been told where the Dark Knight hung about and had been in the area no time at all, when he appeared. He was large, thick bodied and heavy but quick. There was something wicked about him besides for his dark attire.

But the Dark Knight did not wait for an invitation, he just attacked. Hearth slung up his shield and thrust out his spear at the same time. Fending off the attack just barely. He looked over at his companion to see if he'd been missed too.

"Alright there?"

High above the trees a crow circled. He had been sent on a task from his master, Grauen Kerze. Winter was coming on fast and there would soon be a multitude of fires that could be pushed beyond control. Grauen did so love to burn a place to the ground.

There were already hearths burning with fires as the cold plunged deeper and deeper. While they slept, Grauen would make the fires uncontainable. There was nothing like the fear of waking up in a trapped place with fire. Grauen often watched from a barely safe distance as he, Nevermore, and Decay swooped down to attack anyone fleeing the fire. They would use their beaks and claws to peck and shred.


They delighted in blood. It was the smell of it now that caused him to dip low to investigate. There seemed to be a fight going on. Two against the one and a small bird to help.

His master must only be an hour by foot away from here. Canicus could report back to her about these potential victims not to mention the soquili smell that drifted back to him on the wind.Yes, there were a good many in or near these woods.


Hearth repositioned his shield while watching after their foe. He moved with the deadly grace of an experienced warrior. Each of his blows was enough to make metal ring out loudly.

Before long they all fell into a deadly dance. It was not smooth as with a practiced partner of years, but it worked. They ebbed and flowed with the attacks and defense until Hearth saw his opening.

He had let them become lulled in battle into a pattern so that he could now disrupt it. He slammed hard with his shield using it as a battering ram rather than attacking with his sword. The jolt jarred him to his bones, but he pushed again while he still had the advantage.

The other stallion made an impressive attack, sending the Dark Knight reeling. He struck at the foe, a blow that if it had landed would have cleaved open flesh and split him to the bone. However, the Dark Knight danced out of the way and the blow became barely a scratch.

Hearth Umber roared in rage, throwing back his head to the heavens. This battle was taking longer than he'd hoped and he felt his irritation growing more and more as his blows became glancing strikes.

Canicus peered down at them from the trees. They were distracted by the battle below. If he winged it back to his master as fast as he could, they could have the fire raging this way in no time. Yes. And the gathering farther inward would make be made into devastation. The fire would become an inferno that would leave nothing but charred bones behind. The place would smell divine with burning flesh and Grauen would be well pleased. And those that survived would before damaged in the best possible way. They'd feel guilt at surviving all their life and if they were lucky they'd have scars to remind them even more so.

Hearth threw himself into the fury of the battle. His blows were not landing well and luck did not seem to be on his side. But the other stallion was most fortunate about his luck. So he used himself as a distraction. He moved to the side and drew the dark knight's eye. He was huffing in anger as he followed Hearth. He clanged his shield and slashed with his spear in a menacing fashion. He roared to the heavens and shouted for glory. Everything, he could do to keep the stallion distracted so that his companion could land the killing blow.

Canicus took to the skies, flapping his wings hard to race back to his master. The sooner that he got news to her of the inhabitants in the clearing the more victims there would be. A whole precious gathering like kindle for a fire and Grauen Kerze would be the flame.

He could already see the firelight dancing in her eyes when he'd tell her the news. She'd have the whole forest engulfed in no time, and her mate would be right behind her ready to eat the fried livers or cracked marrow of all who were left behind.

He flew with all his might to make it there. He was pushing himself to the limit, straining to fly faster than he had ever before. It was not long before he saw the plume of smoke that marked the camp. His companions Nevermore and Decay were just returning from their scouting missions. All three of them landed on a branch slightly below eye level of their master. Decay spoke of nothing important in the east. Nevermore said there was a small, very small party in the south.

Good. Eager, he told his master about the gathering not but an hour away where there lay their unwitting victims
