Character Development Questions for: Drizyrr

✻ What is your OCs go to comfort food and drink?
-Is their comfort food based off their cultural background, or was it something often made for them by someone else- do they make it themselves or will it never be the same if they dont order it from Ann in that small shack of a restaurant downtown. Was the recipe thrown together and simply works, or was it created from a very specific recipe. Have they added variants to the dish or drink, do they prefer it hot or cold. What about the dish or drink comforts them- they temperature against their hands, the steam rising to their nostrils, the cool color that reminds them of a midsummer's day.

Actually...nothing that fancy. The food that he most covets, that makes him melt into bliss, is oranges. The very day he met Ceres, the love of his life, she brought him back to her home and made him try various different fruits and sweets (as he hadn't really come in to contact with such delicacies in the Underdark). The sweets were much too sweet for him, but the fruit was absolutely perfect. Of those fruits, he favored oranges the most because of their balance of tang and sweet. Moreover, they remind him of Ceres (in more ways than just the obvious arboreal similarity) : she is strong and independent, yet gentle and playful, someone who can put on fierce face, but peel it back and you find someone who's feelings are significantly more delicate.

As for comfort drink, does alcohol count? That would be the closest thing for him.

✻ Describe your OCs smile. Be as detailed as possible.
-Do their smiles begin on the left or right on their lips, does their smile emphasize their crows feet, a dimple, a wrinkle. Does their smile light up a room. Is it obscured by facial hair or oral jewelry. Are their teeth crooked, yellow, chipped- do they show their teeth at all when they smile. Do they hide their smile by biting their lip or covering their lips with their hands.

Drizyrr doesn't smile so much as smirk. Or at least, the lips look more like a smirk: right side quipped up just a little while the lips stay firmly together. Evidence of excessive emotion was frowned upon by his first wife, so he quickly learned to hide as many signs as possible. A smirk was acceptable, a genuine smile was not. However, unbeknownst to him, he could never train his eyes to hide this emotion. The normally cold blood red orbs sparkle like garnet when he is happy or pleasantly surprised. These days they have been doing a lot of sparkling, and who knows? The way things are going, he might crack a real smile soon!

✻ What are your OCs comfort gestures or self-touch gestures? (Common comfort gestures include rubbing the back of the neck or gripping their own arms.) Can they suppress these gestures , what would cause them to, and what events most provoke the use of these gestures?
-Even the most confident of characters have their achilleas heel. When someone has encroached on their insecurities, is their comfort gesture representative of falling into themselves, making themselves smaller. Is it aggressive from an outside perspective. Is the gesture obsessive, sporadic, repetitive- or slow, calm, methodical. Is it noticeable or supple, cause mild pain or soothe the pain caused from whatever provoked discomfort.

Whenever he is particularly stressed, Drizyrr tends to rub his thumb across his two partial fingers (missing just past the first joint.) He isn't particularly cognizant of this action, so suppressing it would be difficult. Perhaps if someone he cared about felt uncomfortable with the gesture, he would train himself out of it. He mostly does it when he is in an awkward/dangerous social situation and he is looking for an escape route. Fortunately for him, it is a rather subtle motion, so people have to be extra observant to notice that he isn't calm. It is sort of a painful action, but not in a physical sense. He lost the pinky due to infection after breaking it, but the ring finger was severed most painfully by his second ex-wife. Feeling the remaining nub reminds him that there can be serious consequences for idle words.

✻ Does your OC work so that they can support their hobbies or use their hobbies as a way of filling up the time they aren’t working?
Drizyrr works in order to support Ceres and make sure she has a comfortable life for as long as possible. He doesn't enjoy his work at all, but so long as she is happy, he would do any job. As for hobbies, he doesn't really think he has any. Melee combat is a part of him, part of his House's heritage. Continuing to practice is as natural to him as breathing, and if he occasionally earns a little coin from it, then so be it. The herbalism comes from his training as well: it was expected of him to know how to make salves and such to tend to his own injuries, but more importantly to know how to make poisons to apply to weapons so that just in case the attack didn't kill, the poison would. He just kept it up because it is a useful skill and apparently people these days are interested in herbal remedies.

✻ How does your OC handle eye contact and why?
It depends on who the person is. If he locks eyes with a child, his gaze will soften and he might nod towards them or something. If it is an adult man, he will maintain his focus and refuse to back down, sometimes turning it into a competition of pride. If it is a woman, he will quickly subvert his gaze as if the floor was perfectly holding his attention. (Extra: spiders are glared at with distrust.) In the society he was born and lived most of his life in, women were considered the superior sex, so he of course had to show he knew his place. It was warfare among the men to see who would marry into the best families, and any sign of weakness was exploited. As for why he is nice to kids, well, he just really likes kids.

✻ Describe your OC in three words. Now let them describe themselves in three words. What experiences would have caused the difference in these answers?
"stranger, reborn, loyal."
"useless, burdensome, unworthy."
Drizyrr bases his self-worth on his martial prowess and his ability to protect those he has sworn to protect. Recently, he was involved in a battle against his fifth ex-wife. In this battle, he was critically injured, and Ceres's sister was killed. Drizyrr blames himself for all of this: he tried to keep Ceres in the dark about him going into battle, but she found out and the results were disastrous. He feels like all he does is cause trouble for her, and his dark past makes him wonder what she could possibly see in him. Now that he has lost an arm, he is no longer able to be the epic dual-wielding battle scourge he once was, and feels he has lost a huge chunk of his identity.

✻ Do they get out of bed on the right or left side?
That's not really much of a thing for Drizyrr. The only beds he is ever in are the one at his house (which is against the wall) , the fold-out couch in Ceres's living room (gets out on whatever side is nearest where he is going), or Ceres's bed (in which case she gets dibs on side picking). If he had to determine a preference, it would be right, but he is ambivalent on the matter.

✻ How does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?
He would need to know how others see him, now wouldn't he? Welp, the image he is going for is someone who is very self-confident and capable, someone who will wreck you if you mess with his fiancée or he. What he actually projects varies from self-conscious outsider when he is trying to figure out how this world works, to homicidal maniac when someone starts messing with Ceres and next thing you know they are missing appendages. That's not to say he begrudges the maniac image, it is good for deterring trouble.

✻ How does your OC cry?
(loud, unapologetic sobs, silent whimpers- or anything in between. Include their body language, whether their tears drip from the left or right tear ducts of their eyes, and whether they are comfortable crying in front of others.)

That's a rare occurrence indeed! He only ever cries when he is asleep, and the nightmares of his past come for him. It is a silent affair which he has little control over, though if the nightmare wakes him up and he is aware of the tears, his body language is very closed off as he races to remove all signs of such a gentle emotion. His time with Ceres is softening him up though, so he may become less reticent about showing his softer side.

“A tongue has no bones but it can break a heart.”
✻ Take the quote above and narrate, from your OCs pov, the first and most notable experience that comes to mind pertaining to this quote. If the characters agrees with the statement, have them defend it's validity or if not, have them refute with an argument.

That is illogical. There are plenty of things with no bones that can cause significant damage. A mindflayer's tentacles do not have bones, but they can cause terrible harm...Ceres whispers something to him Oh. It is supposed to imply that words can hurt by their nature. That...was an overly poetic way of saying something so simple. I should think that was a well-known phenomena. As for a time when it applied to me...probably soon after __ (my first wife) informed me that with the elimination of the other woman who was interested in me, I was now undeniably her property to do with and dispose of as she pleased. Not that I was expecting better, but it still hurt to lose that last bit of independence and humanity. And for the next five and a half centuries, I remained a puppet of evil, too afraid (and eventually too downtrodden) to hope or even dream of a better life.

✻ Make a list of 5 things your protagonist does not want to do.

1) Go back home
2) Leave Ceres
3) Live forever
4) Have to kill anymore innocents
5) Go to the doctor's office

✻ Which of these does your character prefer and why? Stability or novelty? Honesty or charity? Safety or possibility? Talent or effort? Forgiveness or vengeance?

Stability vs. novelty: while he does appreciate the new situation he finds himself in, he is at a point in his life where he wants to start taking things easy. He's not looking for excitement, he's looking to settle into old age.
Honesty vs. charity: these two do not seem mutually exclusive to him, but he does highly value honesty. Most of his life was spent in a corrupt society in which rank was everything, and the best way to get it was via subterfuge and backstabbing. He's tired of that.
Safety vs. possibility: once more, he's trying to settle down, not stir stuff up. Besides, he's been nearly killed countless times, and now he has someone to protect: he'd rather they both remain safe over some grand possibility.
Talent vs. effort: talent is something you either have or don't, and while it may give you an edge, it does not make you an expert. Further, one usually has few skills which are covered by talents. However, there are few skilled which cannot be mastered via effort, with effort one may be good at a great many things, and if one applies much effort into something one usually masters that skill.
Forgiveness vs. vengeance: forgiveness is a virtue which he admires in Ceres, and he knows there are situations in which forgiveness is the best solution. However, he practices vengeance, and he knows that it has prevented a good deal of reoccurring problems, so for himself, he prefers that method.

✻ When your OC puts their hands together, which thumb is on top?

That's sort of a moot point these days, what with having only one arm. But back when he had two, the right was on top.

✻ How much do they rely on their minds and intellect, versus other approaches like relying on instinct, intuition, faith and spirituality, or emotions? What is their opinion on this?

He mostly relies upon his intellect, but knows that instinct is also essential. Instinct makes the split-second decisions when those are needed, and supplies knowledge to help one survive. However, instinct is not always correct, so it must be refined by knowledge and logic. Intuition can help of the others are failing. He is trying to wean himself from spirituality and faith as it has only been a shackle to him all of these centuries, and even now prolonged discussion about the faith of his people terrifies him. He refuses to let emotions have sway in decisions: they are unruly and prone to passion. Neither of these are beneficial qualities in tense situations.

* At what phase in their life did your OC have the healthiest, most positive view of themselves and why?

Healthiest and most positive? Well that is still to come. Back in the Underdark some men would praise him for his battle acumen, and he truly did believe he was an incredible agent of destruction but that was all he was: concentrated murder and evil. Well, concentrated murder and also impressive fecundity, but neither were exactly points of pride. He hated what he was but had resigned himself to the idea he would never be able to change or escape. He found little ways to atone, like helping others out of the Underdark and trying to show kindness and mercy whenever it wouldn't get him killed, but that wasn't enough. Since he met Ceres, he has learned to see that he is not a lost cause, or rather, with her help and guidance and support he can be a worthwhile person. He’s still learning not to beat himself up over everything, that he is allowed to have his own desires, and that he is valuable for more than just his martial abilities.

* What is something that would make your character fly into a rage?

If anyone were to harm Ceres, he would be filled with rage. That said, depending upon the circumstances it would either be a frantic rage or a frost bitten fury. The principal difference is that rage is quick and extremely gory whilst fury is calculating and hauntingly sadistic.

* If your character was going to get arrested, what would be the most likely reason for it?

It's a wonder he hasn't been arrested yet. Likely charges would be assault and homicide.

* When people look at your character, is there some assumption they might make about them just by appearance? Is that assumption correct?

Some have the assumption that drow are inherently evil, and so since he is a drow he must be evil and dangerous. Drizyrr is dangerous to be sure, but he is not evil. As he gets more accustomed to this world he may grow docile, but old habits die hard and so he remains a bit more...stabby than others. He's just trying to protect the few people he cares for and himself.

* Does your character’s family affect your character in any way?

They heavily affect him. He landed in this world because his wife was trying to kill him, but she eventually found him here and nearly killed him. His eldest daughter has some interest in him, hence why she aids him from time to time, but as of yet she has not made her intentions known. The youngest of his elder sisters raised him and made him the fighting machine he was when he first arrived in Soleil. He is continuing to change for the happier thanks to his fiancée and the child they will soon have.

* What is some random affectionate thing that your character always does to their lover?

I don't know that I have a specific gesture, but I do try to maintain physical contact with Ceres as much as I can. It is more difficult since I lost my arm, but even if I cannot hold her hand or put an arm around her I still do my best to remain close by that she might feel my presence.

✻ Does your OC work so that they can support their hobbies or use their hobbies as a way of filling up the time they aren’t working?

I work so that I can afford the things Emi wants and needs. My hobbies are either a carryover from when I was alive that I just haven't cared enough to stop, or things that the girls like so I keep doing them.

✻ How does your OC handle eye contact and why?

I don't shy away from eye contact. Don't really see a reason to. But usually it is other people who break it first. I probably creep them out or something. Maybe because I don't blink?

✻ Describe your OC in three words. Now let them describe themselves in three words. What experiences would have caused the difference in these answers?

✻ Do they get out of bed on the right or left side?

✻ How does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?

✻ How does your OC cry?
(loud, unapologetic sobs, silent whimpers- or anything in between. Include their body language, whether their tears drip from the left or right tear ducts of their eyes, and whether they are comfortable crying in front of others.)

“A tongue has no bones but it can break a heart.”
✻ Take the quote above and narrate, from your OCs pov, the first and most notable experience that comes to mind pertaining to this quote. If the characters agrees with the statement, have them defend it's validity or if not, have them refute with an argument.

✻ Make a list of 5 things your protagonist does not want to do.

✻ Which of these does your character prefer and why? Stability or novelty? Honesty or charity? Safety or possibility? Talent or effort? Forgiveness or vengeance?

✻ When your OC puts their hands together, which thumb is on top?

✻ How much do they rely on their minds and intellect, versus other approaches like relying on instinct, intuition, faith and spirituality, or emotions? What is their opinion on this?

Character Development Questions for: Emelius

✻ What is your OCs go to comfort food and drink?
-Is their comfort food based off their cultural background, or was it something often made for them by someone else- do they make it themselves or will it never be the same if they dont order it from Ann in that small shack of a restaurant downtown. Was the recipe thrown together and simply works, or was it created from a very specific recipe. Have they added variants to the dish or drink, do they prefer it hot or cold. What about the dish or drink comforts them- they temperature against their hands, the steam rising to their nostrils, the cool color that reminds them of a midsummer's day.

MISO SOUP!!!! I don't even know why I like it so much but I do. I haven't picked a favorite yet, but there was one Dad brought me while I was in the hospital that was absolutely divine! It came direct from Japan, so that might have something to do with it... Anyways, an Emi with a belly full of miso is a happy Emi biggrin
