It was a few weeks after their first adventure going Between alone and ever since that task Yulaniath had seemed...off. Shar was having a difficult time holding her attention and she always seemed to go a bit too hard during training to the point where the young rider had to force her down during a drill because the small green was so focused on doing it right that she didn't notice Shar's saddle was dangerously loose. It wasn't until Shar emerged from breakfast to see Yulaniath staring up at the sky that she finally got an idea of what might be wrong.

"Yulan," she called out, but her dragon didn't spare her a glance. Narrowing her bright eyes, Shar marched over to Yulaniath's side, calling out to her in her mind rather than verbally. That drew the green's attention and she turned her gaze towards Shar who had reached her side by that point.

Sorry, Sharmine. My mind was elsewhere-

Again. You know what you need to do so do it before you get one or both of us hurt during training,
Shar said, the scowl on her face enough to make Yulan flinch slightly in embarrassment. But the order was taken to heart and Yulan glanced skyward once more, a bit more confident in what she wanted now. This was all very new for her but instinct took over and, with the urging of her rider, the small green spread her wings and took to the skies over the bowl. Her ascent was quick and her circling was fast, impatient, powerful. She was small, but she was strong.

A rather loud trumpet of challenge came from Yulaniath's mouth as she called to all those who wished to chase, surprising even Shar who stared up at her from below. She could feel the flightlust that finally had pushed its way through Yulan start to boil her blood as well but she didn't want to leave until she saw the dragons leave the immediate area.

Come, all who wish to prove themselves. I want to see who has the discipline and strength to chase me.

Let's get down to business! It's Yulaniath's maiden flight and she's looking for a few good soldiers to humor her. This should be pretty quick since I've been stupidly busy the past month and a half (and I meant to get this up before the weekend, whoops). This will be open until 8/14 8 PM EST and will run for 4 days once the flight begins.

About Yulaniath - Yulan is a hard working girl who takes her role as a green very seriously. She knows she'll never be a high-ranking dragon here and she's all right with that and is ready to be the best green the Weyr has ever seen. She's strong, she's determined, and she is respectful. During this flight she'll be a bit more hot-blooded than normal and her favor for high-ranking dragons will show, but beyond that she'll welcome any color to chase.

About Shar - Equally serious in her role as a greenrider as her dragon, Shar is a no-nonsense gal who values hard work, honesty, and strength of character. She's seeking out a specific person to spend the flight with but if your character is nearby since it's breakfast time you're welcome to have them bump into her on her way to find her flight buddy.

NPC N'sar of blue Doranth

Yulaniath's cry did not go unanswered.

Though it was early, a large, rugged blue dragon had taken note of the young green. His eyes went from a sleepy blue-green to purple as he watched the green circle the Weyr and cry out her challange. How could he be expected to resist the call of such a lovely green? Doranth certainly could not. For all that he was rough and aloof, for all that he lacked the oozing charm of some of the dragons in High Reaches, he was strong, fit, and had such a soft-spot for the beautiful ladies of the Weyr. They were his temptation, his greatest pleasure; he fought Thread in hopes of capturing their praise, but alas, he had lost far too many to the larger browns and bronzes to the Weyr. Oh, just seeing the larger dragons tended to irritate him--bronzes, especially, had the Queen's of the Weyr--did they have to come and take the greens, too? Wasn't it enough they took the lions share of everything in the Weyr?

His his eyes landed on perceived competitors and red immediately brightened his whirling regard. Oh ho! He mantled his wings and hissed, preparing himself to launch from his perch on the heights. He would compete for the lovely green. He would show her how good a blue could be--how under-estimated they often were.

Giving a loud trumpet himself, Doranth spread wide his wings, and made sure she knew of his commitment. Beautiful Yulaniath, if it's strength you wish, I will give my all; if it's discipline you demand, I am at your every command. Where you fly, I will follow--and if I must throw my competition from the sky, than so be it! He wasn't the most poetic creature, but he tried. For Yulaniath, he would tear down every star from the sky if she wished it.

His rider, N'sar, had been just about to get up and get breakfast. Stifling a groan, he instead, flopped back on his cot. No, maybe he'd stay in instead... At least until this was all said and done.

Balizarth was not inclined to pay much mind to any of the up and coming dragonets... especially not those of chromatic hide. If they caught his eye, it usually was for a bad reason—poor attitude, shirking duties, disrespect to their betters—never a good thing, and it never ended well for the younger dragon, at least not in Balizarth's opinion. If they were born of his sister he might give them a bit more of a look over, ill-mannered or not, or a young gold or bronze who happened to show promise. But beyond that there genuinely had never been a cause for the large bronze to give more than a passing, unseeing glance at any chromatic, and least of all the young ones. Until, apparently, one green had had the good sense and bearing to look at herself, see what she was, and accept that she would benefit the Weyr the most by looking to her betters to guide and mentor her. Yulaniath was a paragon of her color—as much as that amounted to, with her being a green—as far as he was concerned, and while from day to day he paid her so little mind as to nearly forget her, in the broad scheme of things he thought of the young weyrling as a potential role model for her sisters in color. Would that they all were half as focused and driven. If they got their heads on straight like her, then maybe they'd actually be worth half the consideration and respect as they claimed to be worth in such backwards places as Western Weyr.

Of course, one natural failing (as far as he was concerned at least) that she still shared with her ilk was the need to rise, and waste precious time about it. It was a distraction to other dragons as well, even bronzes, who had better things to do than flit about after some pretty tail. Perhaps in the days before thread's return it was different, but the big male couldn't help but find it an inane practice compared to the practical rate of golds about their rising. And greens didn't even clutch, for all their sporting! Still, such a failing was expected, and when he heard her call out—perhaps the only green's voice he could actually recognize without a moment's thought within the Weyr—he felt an unusual lack of disdain. Oh, it was still there... just not as deeply-rooted as it usually was. He craned his neck to watch her arcing ascent, a placid lack of purple in his eyes at the sight. How could she compare to the golds he'd chased before?

A glance across the weyr found U'zan at his work, writing quietly as oft he'd done of late. It was... unusual, that his rider still had not found new company to waste his time with, and usually the man would take any flight, green or gold, as a chance to find pleasure in another's arms. At first the bronze had been quite happy about the change—how long had he hoped for U'zan to buckle down and fly straight!—but as time wore on he'd begun to think that perhaps something was wrong. It was just so... unlike the man not to show any interest in these things. For all that he'd wanted this behavior, he no longer thought it quite right for his rider.

An idea came to mind then, though the bronze immediately pushed it away. Him? Chase a green? Even when it was one such as Yulan, why?

Still, it might work. Might spark something in his rider. With that the sole focus of the bronze's intent, he rose from his couch to nudge the man, thundering and insistent before U'zan could ask why. I need you focused and that means you must be content and confident, as always. I will chase, so that you can settle yourself back into your ways, and no more of this wasteful moping. You are better than to waste your time and mine, so do not make me regret this choice. Then, with a trumpet loud enough to drown out the weak squawking of any other chasing suitors, the huge bronze threw himself skyward, twisting slowly but with unstoppable intent towards the rising green. Green Yulaniath—you have shown the correct devotion to your duties in these months, and are becoming a green that even High Reaches will take pride in having in the Weyr's service. Now come, come to me once again as you have done before, and I will reward you for that same devotion.

To the blue who lurked, hissing and spitting like an impotent firelizard, he did not give even a passing glance. Unimportant, not even an obstacle to be overcome. He would fly straight through any opposition without even slowing if they were stupid enough to bar his way. He would win, and U'zan would find some company, and everything would return to how it had been before that little hatchling-goldrider had come flouncing into their lives...!

About Balizarth: Balizarth isn't here for your s**t. Whatever it is, you need to get over it yourself and stop being a burden to their glorious Weyr. No, he is here to do exactly three things. He is here to protect and advance his rider's position. He is here to fight thread. And he is here to ensure that his sister is treated with all the respect and deference she deserves. The bronze has no interest in love, no interest in friendships, no interest in anything beyond the scope of his three duties. He will not begrudge those of weaker wills for being drawn to him, seeking him out, wanting to be near him, as long as they do not get in his way.
Pros: Driven, loyal, resilient, capable.
Cons: Aggressive, cold, impatient, colorist.

About U'zan: He's got all the confidence of a gate-keeping white man who knows even a little bit about whatever topic you've brought up and is ready to 'mansplain' it to you. But sharditall, the trouble is that he actually knows things, and is good at them, so if you can get past his shitty attitude, you probably will actually learn something. Recently lost his girlfriend companion to a dragonet at Western, weirdly not quite back on his game yet.
Pros: Capable, confident, charismatic.
Cons: Arrogant, indulgent, sexist.

Another of those beautiful little greens was taking to the sky and Litanuth was not quick to stir to surge up after her. Not like some other eager dragons would be. He watched trying to sample that flavor in his mouth. Youth was always a pungent one, but that rich - almost overseasoned - taste of duty was one he found pleasant enough.

H'aal ignored the blue's musings, mentally pushing him off. Just go already, he hissed impatiently. Litanuth would talk himself out of it, then back into it, then out of it again - then back in - if he didn't just send him off after her. It wasn't a hard question as to if Yulianiath was wanted or not. Litanuth did without question. He simply needed to stop savoring things he didn't have yet.

With that push, the blue spread out his wings and quietly dropped from his ledge to begin his circling, no attention headed to the others who had already come to her call. He had no sweet, seductive words. I am ready to be put through your paces, Litanuth said, unafraid of what Yulianiath would make him go through to deserve her.

Yulan circled the bowl, waiting for anyone to chase. She knew it was just after breakfast and that other greens had risen recently so she didn't expect many - if any - to rise to follow her. She was a young green who had yet to prove herself and if she were in the metaphorical shoes of the dragons below, she'd want to see some proof that she was worth their time.

But a few suitors did join her in the air, the first of whom being a speckled blue. His words stirred something within her that she hadn't felt before, finding it odd but surprisingly nice to be called beautiful by someone other than her siblings and Shar. Doranth didn't know her personally and yet he was ready to listen to her, follow her, toss dragons from the sky for her! Oh, how wonderful!

I'm eager to see your performance, Doranth, she called, her eyes whirling purple with just a tinge of red, her tone more like that of a commander rallying their troops than that of an eager green.

A great shiny presence was added to the sky and Yulan's brimming confidence was shattered by sheer surprise. She turned quickly, the red replaced by grey, the new color swirling with the suddenly incredibly vivid purples in her eyes. Balizarth?! Chasing her? Oh no. Oh noooo no no no-

His words nearly sent her from the skies, wanting nothing more than to let the massive bronze catch her without a flight to show for it. But wouldn't that make her like all the other greens, she reminded herself. She didn't want him to think she was some weak-willed, easily tempted youth! The ever so slight tinge of red pushed the grey out of her eyes again as she gave a few powerful beats of her wings, sizing up her idol.

You honor me with your presence, Balizarth. But it would be a bit silly of me to go through all this without any competition. Her gaze lingered on the bronze far longer than needed and if she added a gentle mental brush against his mind along with her words, well. That was just for them.

A third dragon rose - another blue - and Yulaniath turned to give him due recognition as well. Litanuth wasn't poetic or forceful in his words but she could appreciate blunt honesty as much as everything else. He was there just as much as the other two were and, should he out-fly them, would be rewarded justly.

Wonderful, Litanuth. If you succeed you'll be rewarded handsomely.

Unable to wait any longer, Yulan turned a tight circle in the center of the bowl before addressing the dragons that had risen for her.

Follow me, try to keep up! And she was off like a shot, flying straight up with quick, precise wing beats. Height was important to gain while she still had her strength and speed with her. She could show off a little once they were up to height.

Shar watched from the ground as Yulan waited for her suitors and when a certain awful bronze showed his face Shar had to groan. Ugh...she knew Yulaniath was pining something awful for Balizarth and she had hoped he wouldn't show his colorist face, but what could you do? Hopefully one of the blues would impress her more. Once Yulan began her flight Shar turned her attention to the massive Bowl she had to get across to find R'iz. He hadn't been at breakfast so he was probably still in his Weyr. Good.

She set off, her mind on one thing and one thing only.

While he'd paid little attention - almost none - to Yulianiath's other suitors, that she had paid some extra special attention to the older bronze in their midst did not go unmissed. He was attentive, not oblivious. It made something in him coil jealously, but it was not the time to hiss and spit about it. No, the morning was just beginning.

It will be a spectacular fall from this high up, how close of a game of wherry (chicken) would her victor play?

The instruction had been to keep up - not to outfly her - and while Litanuth would not press himself hard to keep too close, he still let her lead by more than he would have liked.

Purple swirled through his usual orange as the large brown watched Yulaniath call out across the Bowl, challenging quite a few males into the sky after her. Though she was young she had a strong spirit and Hoath himself often found those to be the most intriguing ones to chase, but it took quite a lot to get him off his ledge. In fact it was usually.... a trumpet that drowned out the young green's own ripped through the air as Balizarth hopped skyward after her. Red appeared and his entire body shifted on his ledge, the firestorm of his wings mantling.

"Wait, you're actually gonna chase this time because you're jealous of a bronze?" Ri'ven chuckled loudly, still in the process of pulling on a shirt to walk down for breakfast, their morning sweeps looking suddenly like they'd be postponed if Hoath actually did get lucky. You say that as if it hasn't happened before. "One time doesn't quite count for all that pride you're oozing." the man said with a wink, ignoring the rumbling in response as he made to walk down towards breakfast.

Find something more interesting yourself maybe? Hoath stated ominously as he hopped off his ledge and pushed his wings to surge forward, late as usual given how long it took him to debate the effort, he followed after the blues and bronzes chasing after the young green. Up they went, straight into the air after Yulaniath's fleet form, his silence drug out as he worked to make up the distance between himself and the others, only trilling quietly once he figured he wasn't as far behind. Your intensity will put us all through our paces, what a statement for a bright future. Hoath spoke quietly for just her, Shall we see how far you can lead us on your first flight?

---------------------

About Hoath: Intensely vain but loyal and hardworking to a fault, he has a tendency to get goaded by metallics. While he generally shows a disinterest in anyone other than his rider, Hoath deeply dislikes the color hierarchy at High Reaches and treats all dragons other than his wing's leader and second the same.

Yulaniath is rising. The words cracked through the focus that the short redhead had been giving to each link in the piece that he was making. Instantly R'iz turned to glance at his bronze who was laying on his ledge, head tilted to watch his clutch sister rise as all the males took to the sky after her. Still he had no desire to, wouldn't for quite some time from the feeling of it and that was just fine by the redhead who dropped what he was doing and walked out to watch as well. Yulan was quite high up already though, there'd be no keeping an eye on her, but that just made him worry about Shar.

A chuckle rose from Bossuth, his nose wuffling down into R'iz's hair. If any were going to be fine on their first greenflight it would be Shar. I'd be more worried for any that came across her path than for her. Still, he hoped that all the times he'd spoken with her, Shar would be okay in whatever decision it was that she made, but he held that bit back from his rider. Would you like to go find her? That caused R'iz to swallow a lump that he hadn't known was in his throat. "I seriously doubt..."

Though Yulan had her eyes trained on the bright blue sky above them, she could feel the presence of the males chasing her, the lot of them managing to stay fairly close to her. It was only her first flight and she did have a bit more growing to do, but she was a little disappointed in herself that she hadn't set the bar high to start with especially with Balizarth among the chasers. No matter. They were up among the clouds now and as she leveled out, Yulaniath glanced over her shoulder to the blues and bronze- and brown?!

Hoath's voice reached her mind and she took a moment to train her full attention on him, purple and red eyes tracking his movements. He was a bit late to the game but she didn't mind. That a brown that had no affiliation to her had decided to chase was flattering in and of itself.

Hopefully far, Hoath. Thank you for joining us! She directed her gaze forward again, reaching out to the blues, the brown, and the bronze that flew along with her, her touch respectful but insistent. Follow me, it seemed to say as she darted among the clouds, no longer flying straight. Up, down, around, over, under- Could they keep an eye on her and follow her or would the simply barrel through the obstacles?

Shar wove through the crowds of people, paying no one mind as they either completely ignored her or reached out to try to stop her, clearly aware of the fact that her dragon was the one rising. But she shrugged off the hands, even snarling at one rider who held on to her tunic. He jerked away in surprise and Shar changed her gait, jogging lightly through the Bowl.

A glimmer from the mouth of the weyr she was heading towards let her know that Bossuth was home, which meant R'iz should be as well. Good. Hopefully the bronze would bugger off and find something else to do. She had let Bossuth in on her troubles with dealing with and understanding emotions and they'd tentatively figured some things out, but most of that was pushed to the back of her mind as she drew closer to her friend's weyr. Instinct was driving her now and it was leading her right to R'iz.

"Morning, Bossuth," she said as she got close enough for the dragon to hear. "R'iz, you in?"

A chuckle rumbled from the brown as he surged forward just a bit more, flying just a bit closer despite the evidence that he'd startled her with his late arrival. Even if only just a little. The red edges of his otherwise purple eyes danced as he twisted to follow her darting form through the clouds, weaving and twisting as he'd always done in training. As he'd always done fighting Thread since it's arrival.

It was much better to not have to be flaming at all sides while doing so though.

Oh certainly skill trumps hope, you may be young but you can show us all exactly who we're dealing with. Surely. Hoath responded, a soft challenge in his otherwise warm voice. Snapping his wings closer to himself, extending them when needed, the brown did his best not to strip straight past her, preferring to be closer for the chase than to backtrack constantly. Instead, during those times where he restrained himself, his eyes watched both her and those following behind as well. He wasn't a violent dragon by any means, really he would only get involved in any sort of violence if it was turned at someone he felt protective of, namely his rider. It seemed he was lucky with this group, they didn't seem intensely violent towards one another.

Voice lost when he heard Shar's speak to Bossuth, R'iz just turned curious eyes towards her for the brief second it took for the little bronze to chuckle and shift. A good morning it is, let's see what it holds. Though the redhead's hand reached out to touch him, the bronze was gone in the same instant, leaving a hum of love behind him as his wide wings took him up and over the Bowl towards the fire heights where he could sun himself and be out of the way.

Still somewhat at a loss, R'iz blinked after his dragon before turning to Shar, "I dunno exactly what he's up to, but I was waiting on you for breakfast. Shouldn't you be focusing on Yulan right now though?" He couldn't see them anymore, but that didn't mean that... wait... Where he'd turned to look back skyward after his best friend's green again now his gold eyes focused on Shar and the look on her usually stern face.

He was far too smart a dragon to go forth without his head about himself, even though he tried to hold on to that brush of presence - follow, come, we go - that she gave. Molten colors bubbled beneath the purples of his eyes. She could lead nowhere he would not - could not - follow.

Latching to that brief touch, Litanuth pressed back his own insistant need to Yulianiath - go, fly, lead the way, I will follow. Purple laced the entire thought. His wings would not give out no matter how hard she pushed him and even the clouds so high above would not keep her from his sight.

Of course a bronze had to show up.

Of course, of all the bronzes, Balizarth had to be the one to chase.

Oh, how his blood really began to boil as he turned his gaze on the bronze. Once again, a beautiful green was finally taking to the skies, and they had to contend with that one on top of it. Had he no better golds to sit by? Had he no golden ladies to seduce? Why was he chasing a green when he could have anyone else in the Weyr?

Unfortunately, between his righteous anger at his metallic competition, and Yulaniath's words of encouragement, Doranth had a very slow start. By the time he realized that she had spirited away, along with the competition, Doranth found himself well behind.

...he meant to do that. Really.
I am clearly a fool for you, lovely Yulaniath. You've made me forget myself by such words of encouragement. And that was the truth. Even if part of it was his frustration with his metallic competition. Hmph.

Giving a loud, bellowing roar, little caring that some might well be trying to sleep, the dragon threw himself from his ledge and took after the group. He might be trailing, but his hearts were ready for the chase. None of us are worthy of your charm, lovely Yulaniath. You should have the pick of the Weyr, and five times as many chasers. As much as it pained him, for the more who chased, the less likely his chances of success--but it was only right. Such a beauty deserved to have only the best--and Doranth would do his best to make up for his delayed start.

Yulan's hearts were beating quickly with her exertion as well as the thrill of being chased by such a variety of dragons. She had hoped for some blues to rise to follow her, maybe a brown, but she had almost the full gambit of colors trailing behind her. It was just missing a green or two, though she supposed her own hide filled in that requirement. Who would have thought she'd garner so much varied attention?

To Hoath she sent a surge of determination, to prove that he was right. She hoped she'd be worthy of the attention of the males chasing her but to do so she needed to prove that she had the skills to back herself up. No one wanted a useless green. Balizarth was sent an encouraging press to his mind, urging him to continue to chase, her desire to fall to his claws apparent. She'd give them all a fighting chance, though, even with the massive bronze on her tail. Litanuth's bold want was startling as Yulan felt it wash over her mind but it was also extremely flattering and she gave the blue due attention, a silent promise of giving him everything he wanted if he continued to perform well. And for Doranth who had been left slightly behind she sent only encouragement and perhaps just a bit of her flustered thoughts got through as well at his kind words. The pick of the Weyr? Her? No no, she was just a green, the boys that were behind her were much more than enough. Come along then, you can still catch up!

Her mind was so focused on each of her suitors that she didn't speak aloud, giving them each only emotions to tide them over for now. Yulan flew straight into one of the clouds she had previously been circling, disappearing from sight for a few moments, before climbing hard out of the damp air. It would take a keen mind to predict where she might come out, but the end was drawing near and she needed more height, more space to fall.

Shar could feel the love from Bossuth as he took his leave, the sensation warming her rather than suffocating her as it had done the first time he'd met her. They'd been working on that as well and while it was stiff difficult in large doses, Shar was coming to appreciate the feeling of the unconditional love the bronze had for her. But she wasn't here for that, as nice as it was, and she turned to her friend and his bewildered stare.

The oblivious words that came out of R'iz's mouth made Shar want to laugh and groan all at the same time. Was he really that dense? He'd said everything out loud and yet he still hadn't put the pieces together? An exasperated look overtook Shar's features as she strode forward, completely sure about what she wanted. Physical things weren't scary or intimidating to her - she'd lived her whole life in a Weyr, after all, and as standoffish as she could be she had enjoyed a few flights with fellow Candidates. Now, though, she had purpose and drive and knew exactly who she wanted to spend her beloved Yulaniath's first flight with.

And hopefully all of the ones to follow.

"No, she's fine," she said as she drew closer. "Right now my focus is right. Here." As she spoke she reached out, grabbing two handfuls of R'iz's tunic. Rather than draw him close she pushed him back until they were pressed against the Weyr wall, amber eyes flashing in the slight darkness of the cave with the flightlust rolling through her. She did hesitate just a moment, surveying R'iz's face to make sure there wasn't flat-out terror or rejection before she leaned forward, pressing an urgent but surprisingly passionate kiss to his lips. Oh... yes, this was much more rewarding when doing it to someone who actually meant something.

Rather than tiding him over, Yulianiath was whetting Litanuth's appetite - he wanted her more and his poor rider was slapped face-first with all of that want. It hadn't been as strong for Samodith. No, Litanuth wanted this one more and he wouldn't keep his eyes off of her, even as she dove into cover.

The clouds wish they could hide you for themselves, it was almost flirtatious, assisted by that still palpable desire. He may have joined the flight frank and without flowery words, but now he oozed it - want, want, want, want - and Litanuth had not been fooled for a moment. Too sharply attentive, too smart for his own good.

NPC BLUE LITANUTH: Intelligent, but dark minded. Prone to enormous bouts of envy once he's decided he wants something and doesn't get it. Can be hard to read at times.
NPC H'AAL: Sharp minded, but has a tendency to be spiteful. Used to be a Sailor and definitely acts it. Only came to the Weyr when Threadfall took out his ship.
