Name: Kwenthanas 'Kwen'
Age: 107
Nameday: 3467.10.07
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Weyr: Western Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: JM Healer (Herbalist)

Physical Description:
Dark skinned, silver-haired, and in possession of brilliant emeralds for eyes, there is something striking about Kwen even in her advanced age. Standing at 5'2, she's lean, if a little physically weaker and slower than she used to be. Fortunately for her, her body still retains its tone from Turns of dragonriding. If asked, she would describe herself as 'once athletic, now an enthusiast', for she has transitioned well from graceful young woman to spry midnight fox.

Her heart-shaped face bears wrinkles and crow's feet, as well as dimples. Her hair, once long and thick, is thinner now, though she still keeps it braided and decorated with fanciful flowers and beads. She looks entirely too unserious for the role of 'traditional weyrwoman'- which is why she fits right in at Westen Weyr. Even during the worst of times, a smile graces her features, her laughter lines obvious. There is a sweet, darling old grandma look about her for sure.

She likes draping fabrics, and is especially fond of long skirts, sashes and jewellery made of flowers- both fresh and dried. Her favourite colours are white, and shades of gold that match Yhith's hide.

Personality:
Widely considered 'eccentric and mostly harmless', Kwen is somewhat of an oddball. Her humour borders on salacious and inappropriate (oh who am I kidding- she's as dirty-minded as they come, with a quick wit and silver-tongue to conceal it during initial conversations). She has no sense of propriety or understanding of comfort zones or boundaries, but nevertheless maintains rather refined manners instilled in her during childhood. So yes- she'll definitely joke about where she would love to eat her next bubbly pie, but it will be /tasteful/ (badum-tss). She appreciates a good figure as much as the next person.

She is, deep down, a genuine and empathic woman with a love for helping others- even if they don’t always do the things she thinks are right. She’ll be there to dispense wisdom when asked, and tut-tut when they mess up. She’s well accustomed to cleaning up people’s physical or emotional messes, and has a rather kindly, nurturing air about her, despite her inner perversity.

Independent, free-spirited and strong-willed, Kwen takes time adjusting to new rules and customs, and much prefers to follow her own set of moral rules and principles. Mostly, her habits and beliefs fit in well with dragonriding traditions- but with the return of Thread and the need for fighters she’s found herself a little… displaced- too silly and old to be of much use, too restless and inattentive to provide help with the ‘young’uns’. Still, she’s not the type to argue or make a fuss if someone needs to put her back in line (though she might complain a little under her breath).

A little scatter-brained at time, Kwenthanas has a difficult time taking things seriously. Old age has made her rather flippant about the whole ‘life’ business, and as a consequence she has lost all sense of risk and consequence. She’ll be the one charging into the skies to rescue some haphazard dragon blown off course just because. She’d rather take the punishment (oh yes) than watch much younger lives suffer.

She is flighty and restless, and has a difficult time settling her attention on any one thing in particular. She’s the type of person to take a great interest in a subject for a few days, only to get bored and move onto something else very quickly. She is a fountain of random trivia, but it is quickly discovered that there is not much depth to her knowledge, and she is, in fact, rather shallow in more ways than one.

Well-meaning, her chipper approach to life is endearing; and the combination of her particular, irascible charm and quick wit can make her fun to be around. Flighty, she longs for the days of old when she felt more needed and useful, but will never pass up an opportunity to lend a hand when needed.

Positive Trait List Charming, Unconventional, Sensitive
Negative Trait List Restless, Uninhibited, Foolish

History:
Born in Monaco Weyrhold to a queenrider mother and a healer father, Kwenthanas was a beloved daughter, first of seven. She endeavoured to make her parents proud, finding it difficult at first to share her parents' attention with her sisters. As she grew, she discovered she didn't mind so much if she wasn't in the spotlight: there was a big wide world out there, begging to be explored. She developed an interest in plants, fostered by her father's healercraft, and framed by romantic dragonwings.

She was a bright and eager student, though her mind wandered during Harper classes. To this day, Kwen still has a love for the great outdoors- especially sunny, warm days. She'd skip class to go exploring, often getting into trouble with figures of authority. Her mother was told, and took a path of discipline, drilling into her the importance of having a purpose and place in the world, encouraging her to look further than her own needs and childish ambitions. Kwen did her best not to disappoint her mother, but began to chafe under her more titanic rule. Here was a woman who commanded with the tone of her voice and the power of her words, who was as charming as she was disarming. Kwen wanted to be like her, but not /her/.

She pursued herbalism as her healer specialty, as the southern continent was home to fascinating and sometimes undocumented plantlife. Helping others filled her with pride, but there was a deeper longing that not even hard work could help her ignore: seeing her mother, and witnessing the bond between her and her dear Saphraseth, tugged at her heart. When she was sixteen, her sister Kerethia Impressed green Valsieth, of Saphraseth's get. Impressed before her, for she too was a candidate on those sands.

It was hard not to feel disappointed and bitter; enduring her mother's transparent favouritism for her sister was a test of her patience and goodwill. Still, she tried her luck on the sands when the opportunity presented itself between her studies. When Saphraseth rose four Turns later, Kwen's life changed forever.

It was a small clutch, and even the dragons seemed a little smaller than usual. The last egg hatched a tiny gold- the first queen daughter Saphraseth had produced. All eyes were on the dainty creature, but she seemed more interested in gathering the pieces of her shell. The minutes ticked by as she swept them into a disorganised pile, cheeping and chirping with such a profuse joy that even her mother's worry ebbed away.

Kwen, Kwen look! Our first treasure! Will you come and take a piece for your Yhith to cherish? The shimmery, sunshine voice rippled across the young woman's mind. It was filled with such love and affection that Kwen staggered a moment, gasping in surprise.

"Yhi-yhith?" Tremulous words left her lips, and she found herself rushing forwards, wrapping her arms around the young darling baby. Tears splashed down her face, and Yhith squealed a little, amused.

Kwen, it's okay! There are lots of pieces to choose from!

The young woman laughed too.

There wasn't much training to be had at the Weyrhold. Kesyrras took the weyrlings through basic training, paying special attention to her new rider-daughter. Kwen was never free- her mother lurking in the shadows, revealing a more manipulative side the young woman had not imagined in her childhood. Kesyrras was jealous to her core, prone to setting one child against the other to amuse herself. The way Kwen saw it, having a shiny dragon had given the woman an inflated sense of entitlement- and that was not who she wanted to be.

She had to get away. She knew Yhith was more than happy to explore the world around her- they both shared that same passion for adventure. A Turn after Impression, Kwen packed her belongings, said goodbye to her father, of whom she had grown especially fond, and left.

Free at last. It was good for the first few months, but it wasn’t long until the young woman was plagued by a sense of purposelessness. She had an itch to do something, to contribute in some way to. She explored parts of the southern continent, but even her fascination for plant life didn’t keep her enthused for long. The Pernese were moving westwards, so she decided to do so as well.

Yhith yearned for dragon-company, being naturally social. Kwen went knocking on Western Weyr’s doors, offering her services as a healer in exchange for living arrangements. It worked for a while- Kwen even met a lovely healer fellow named Astirial, who held her attention more than any man had in the past. They had a few children together before she once more longed to return to a bigger world.

She compromised with the Western council: she and Yhith would return for six months a Turn, every Turn, and clutch on Western sands when she was due, in exchange for being permitted to provide remote western cotholds with medical assistance. Astirial agreed to come along- the pair forging a deeper bond as they launched their aerial healer services.

Over the course of the Turns, Kwen and Astirial had more children; Yhith returned to Western to rise and clutch. Tragedy struck them when the woman was 62, for Astirial contracted a bad fever they had been trying to cure. No amount of tending or healing care seemed to give him relief, and Kwen’s desperate efforts proved futile. Astirial does within two sevendays.

She returned to Western Weyr broken-hearted, but mustering some of her mother’s special brand cold dignity. It took her a few Turns to overcome the melancholy that swallowed her, and longer still before she could go back to healing. The presence of children and grand-children was a salve and a boon, and she found herself involving herself in family matters even when she wasn’t wanted. Nurturing others was a way of healing her own heart and soul.

Sixteen Turns ago was the end of her remote-healing career, when she was unable to halt a terrible fever from wiping out an entire cothold. Kwen struggled to shake the lingering sense of failure and disappointment, and returned to Western Weyr with the intention of never leaving again. Yhith was glad to settle at last, the western sun warm on her hide, the sand and sea a pleasure to behold from her wallow. She wrapped up her rider in her sunny warmth and endless love, and together, the two of them healed from the hurts of the past.

And yet, but three Turns ago, disaster struck once again- this time on a Pern-wide scale. The Red Star swung close enough to drop Thread. Riders scrambled to fight back, and Kwen counted herself amongst their number. Flamethrower training had been many, /many/ Turns ago, and very basic, but she did her best- as did Yhith. The two saved more than one injured comrade their first Fall. It reignited Kwen’s passion and inner fire, giving her purpose once more. Though their reactions might have slowed, they still fly with the Queen’s Wing, and have no intention of stopping anytime soon (leadership might have different ideas, however).

DRAGON
Name: Yhith
Age: 87
Color: Gold
Size: 42'

Physical Description:
A petite and delicate gold, Yhith seems to spread sunshine and warmth wherever she goes. There is a subtle, serpentine quality to her frame and movement. She has a long, tapering muzzle, and rather long headknobs.

Personality:
Delightful, pure and sweet, Yhith doesn’t have a bad or selfish bone in her body. She is bubbly and full of joy, easily able to sympathise with another’s pain. This creates an unfortunate tendency of being easily manipulated. Yhith also struggles to draw up appropriate boundaries with others. She becomes an emotional sponge, soaking up their woes until her bright, shiny little world turns all grey. She has to be told to take time to care for herself: there is not a bad or selfish bone in this dragon’s body.

Yhith is extraordinarily forgetful, even by dragon standards. She is also, much to everybody else’s chagrin, scatterbrained and easily distracted. She needs a firm hand in order to stay focused on a given task. She means well, and is very sweet- but please Yhith, for the love of Faranth, don’t just leave your meal half-finished because a rock was more interesting (or something)!

Sunny and precious, Yhith seems to have retained much of her youthful curiosity. She likes to explore and investigate her surroundings on a daily basis. Because of her poor memory, she often forgets what’s out there most days- as a consequence she likes to rediscover her weyr every so often, marvelling at nature’s beauty. Some of her favourite games involve hide and seek and ‘return that item to its rightful owner please, before we get in trouble’ (that one is more of Kwen’s devising, but it’s fun, really); she just has a really difficult time remembering where she’s put things, or if they belonged to her in the first place…

She is a calm and soothing presence, much like the waves of the ocean she adores. She has a strong maternal instinct and is especially fond of little children. Firelizards are also a great source of joy for her, but she doesn’t understand why they haven’t grown up to be much bigger. The fact that they are not dragons like herself seems to escape her notice unless it is brought up- again and again… she’s a bit simple. Her world is a bubble of bliss and ignorance equally.

Pleasant and polite, Yhith’s mindvoice is like a ray of sunshine on a beautiful spring day: filled with gentleness and hope, and radiating a certain shy innocence. She is a very social creature, and will never hesitate to strike up a conversation with even the surliest of dragons. When it comes to love, Yhith has a hard time settling down because she doesn’t want to disappoint anybody- why should love be so jealously coveted? It’s a big world out there, and everyone could use a little more love in their life!

Positive Trait List Sweet-tempered, Sunny, Serene
Negative Trait List Forgetful, Easily Manipulated, Scatterbrained

Okay, she looks great, but I do have a few questions/comments.

Her rank would most decidedly be wingrider.

Also, I'm not completely sure why, prior to Threadfall, it was necessary for her to strike a bargain in order to bring aid to Western cotholds and such. The cotholds are still under the protection of the Lord Holders, and as a healer she would have been acting under the supervision of the Healer Hall. Why couldn't she just answer emergency calls on her dragon or something? She can go between, after all... and there are firelizards to carry messages. Is it just that she didn't want to stay at the Weyr?

She also wouldn't have had to exchange anything in order to be a Western rider. She could've just applied with the leadership to transfer there. Even if she'd been living on her own, they would've accepted.
