The weyrlings were not, in Z'von's opinion, prepared to face Threadfall on the regular. Although they had drilled many times before, once more could hardly hurt. If he had anything to say about it, they would be practicing quite a lot more. Arms crossed, the assistant Weyrlingmaster surveyed his handiwork. Yes, it would certainly do.

"All right, kids. We're going to do Threadfall practice. Padmia has very kindly provided us with paint soaked yarn. I will be tossing it down from above to simulate Thread. The object of the game is to get hit with the least yarn possible. It's a windy day, so be on the lookout. This will be a dodging lesson, so it's for Goldriders, too."

He had gotten some volunteers to assist him, so that the sky would be sufficiently saturated. "No bonus points will be assigned. I'll be judging your performance based on how many different colors I find on you and your dragons." If they thought this was a silly drill, well... they'd better take it seriously. Dhremorath rumbled his support for that notion. Indeed, they had hardly impressed with their Threadfall fighting.

Please roll a d10 on this grid! You will be able to roll 10 times per dragon/rider pair. At the end of the game, I will be handing out prizes based on who gets the lowest scores!

Borrowed from my beloved Uta.
Quote:

1. Shardit all! You were doing so good too! Another gust of wind sends thread to hit you on your right leg and stain your new riding straps. (+1)

2. So focused on avoiding a rogue patch of green dyed rope to you right, and your thoughts focused on where you need to jump ahead when it comes to *between* to avoid it should the wind not work in your favor, both of you are blindsided and hit on the left! Thick messes slide down your dragon's arms and hit the wing-sail near his/her back. (+3)

3. Seriously? SERIOUSLY!? You are pushed down in to a clump of dyed rope you had JUST seconds before avoided. So not fair. (+2)

4. Your dragon takes a sharp turn to the left, roaring in anger as the base of his/her tail and right calf gets stained by a few loose strands falling from above. (+1)

5. You were thinking about your crush. You know you have to stay focused, you know you have to be on your game but it isn't as if this drill is REAL thread. You can't help it. It just happened. But during that moments distraction, that second daydream, you missed the thread falling too far back for your dragon to see. Both of you get hit on the back and your dragon's tail. Oops. (+3)

6. The dyed rope hits your dragon's chest and left forearm. How uncreative. (+1)

7. You are frustrated, your dragon seems to running out of steam. You try to encourage your dragon but this drill seems never ending and the dye seems to be a little itchy on your dragon's hide. Not cool. With a sharp updraft, your dragon gets hit on the main wingsail and leaves a thick red stain in its place. (+2)

8. The 8 is a lie. D: But for real, you get scored. Seriously. You get scored so bad your dragon gets grumpy and you are less than pleased since Cheri is a jerk and has stained both of you. (+3)

9. You were going to do great at this competition. Your dragon was prepared, you were prepared, and you know your dragon is the best. Unfortunately, your dragon couldn't outmaneuver this clump of badass dyed rope. S/he gets it tangled on his/her neck and headknobs and now looks a little silly. (+2)

10. DID YOU LEAVE THE STOVE ON!? NO! DYED ROPE! FAKE THREAD! YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A STOVE SO WTF! BUT SERIOUSLY . . . DID YOU LEAVE IT ON!? (+1)

Veltanna shaded her eyes as she listened to the instructions. Ohh. That looks pretty! We aren’t supposed to let it hit us. But it is pretty! I want to be pretty! No. Veltanna considered. If you avoid it more than any other dragon I will get you a hat. She wasn’t above bribing her dragon. Even better!

Splat! What?! No! Bad not thread yarn things! Well, that good mood didn’t last long.

Pellereth's distaste at the dyed yarn strands at the beginning of the drill hadn't lessened as they readied for the drill, eyeing the volunteer riders who dropped the strands. I'lin's hand patted his neck, and the reassurance flooded through them. But Pellereth was a lighter bronze, his hide the color of milked klah. Any color would stick out fashionably.

And it did.

The groan from Pellereth made I'lin chuckle some, turning back to eye the stain across his dragon's tail. They'd have to be more careful.

Twack. Another hit by the dyed yarn. It was not as bad the first hit. Just a small hit across the chest and arm. Moirath giggled. That tickles!

A dodging drill? Shar gave a little huff but swung up into the saddle, clipping herself in as Yulaniath shook out her wings. This would be easy. It was a green's job to be agile and avoid thread without a care! Just as they lifted off, however, a gooey clump of 'thread' caught them both right on their back.

"Ugh...I think I'd rather be scored for real," Shar muttered as she shook the painted yarn off of her. Yulan gave a little snort of distaste at the feeling as well but also the confidence that had been cut short from her rider. Not so easy, was it?

Shaking off the rest of the yarn, Yulan began to dodge and weave through the falling clumps. They were a little faster the Thread they'd seen before but that didn't mean the next round of real Thread wouldn't fall like this.

Ah! Cold! A clump of 'thread' had landed right on Yulan's head and neck and looked quite silly dangling there, a bit like blue hair.

"It's a good look for you, Yulan," Shar said with a little cackle.

After finally shaking the yarn from her head, Yulan seemed a little winded for her efforts. And itchy. Shar leaned forward to try to scratch some of the quick-drying dye off and nearly fell forward as a thermal lifted them sharply, right into another falling clump of yarn.

"All right," Shar muttered as she settled back into her saddle. "Time to get serious."

Yulan focused and together the duo began to do better dodging the falling clumps. A few threads did scrape over Yulan's hind leg, earning a frustrated snort from the small green, but Shar gave her neck a quick pat to reassure her. They were definitely doing better than before.

Now that they seemed to have the patterns down, Yulan settled into a routine of dodging and weaving under the dragons flying higher above. There was no real danger involved here other than the disapproval of Z'von and while Shar knew she really shouldn't let herself get distracted, she couldn't help but let her mind wander just a bit. She glanced around, trying to see if she could spot R'iz and Bossuth. The larger dragons were probably having a harder time with this-

"Shards and shells," she muttered as another wet clump caught them from behind. This one seemed extra goopy and Yulan did a slow barrel roll to let the gloppy yarn slide off them. Gross.

Was this exercise over yet? How hadn't they run out of yarn? Shar glanced up in time to see a clump of 'thread' heading their way, but before they could dodge it another thermal sent them up, up, up to meet it head-on.

"This is disgusting," Shar muttered as Yulan shook off the yarn, shivering under her rider. She could only agree - it wasn't the most pleasant sensation.

It seemed the thermal wasn't quite giving up.

"Get out of it, Yulan, come on," Shar growled, leaning down to try to get rid of some of the wind resistance. Before they could dive out of the rising air, however, they were greeted with one more slap of wet yarn against Yulan's wing. Hopefully if it was in the same space they wouldn't look like they got hit as much.

Their escape wasn't the best idea as it put them in the direct line of fire of a massive clump of soggy yarn. It caught Yulan on her shoulders and Shar directly on top of her head, blinding her a bit. Thankfully she had goggles on and taking them off fixed the problem. Hopefully they wouldn't get hit there again, otherwise she really would be flying blind.

Well this was just great. Shar was pretty sure they hadn't done this poorly during their actual flight - they'd not even really gotten any bad scars - but they seemed to be struggling. Maybe the dye was weighing down Yulan's wingsails? Either way, the more they tried to dodge the more they got hit.

"Maybe we shouldn't be trying so hard," Shar muttered as she wiped her face with the back of her hand, smearing the green there onto the blue on her face.
