Days upon days had passed since the night Abyss had finally fully accepted Shade in Total Darkness' presence. The little fox-wolf would never forget that night, or the days following, where, to the little male's surprise - Abyss had stayed in pace with him. Perhaps only a few steps ahead, but definitely within eyesight. In fact, Shade couldn't help feeling like Abyss was always aware of what he was up to. Several times Shade had lost his footing and his companion had been there momentarily, almost as if he had known that a misstep was imminent. Perhaps at one point this would have been disconcerting. Shade found it endearing. And you better believe that more than one incident since had nothing to do with paw placement and more to do with attention seeking.
While the pair journeyed, Shade had felt more and more comfortable in their arrangement...and so he began to talk. Sometimes he talked about his life before Abyss, sometimes he told stories, sometimes he even sang. Sometimes the journeyed in companionable silence. Abyss never shushed the fox-wolf, but neither did he comment, though Shade knew he was listening. Then, at the end of the day after hunting, the pair would curl up and do it all again the next day.
Shade never asked where they were headed.
They had traveled far from where they'd met. Leaving the large trees of the forest and moving into the mountains. Summer had slowly drifted towards fall and not only were the days starting to get shorter, but also colder. Both Shade and Abyss' fur had started to lengthen, their winter coats coming in as the vibrant leaves of fall colored the timberline.
Today, Shade was feeling adventurous. Perhaps the crispness in the air emboldened the small wolf, or perhaps he could sense his companion's good mood.
"Abyss....where are we headed?"
