Days upon days had passed since the night Abyss had finally fully accepted Shade in Total Darkness' presence. The little fox-wolf would never forget that night, or the days following, where, to the little male's surprise - Abyss had stayed in pace with him. Perhaps only a few steps ahead, but definitely within eyesight. In fact, Shade couldn't help feeling like Abyss was always aware of what he was up to. Several times Shade had lost his footing and his companion had been there momentarily, almost as if he had known that a misstep was imminent. Perhaps at one point this would have been disconcerting. Shade found it endearing. And you better believe that more than one incident since had nothing to do with paw placement and more to do with attention seeking.

While the pair journeyed, Shade had felt more and more comfortable in their arrangement...and so he began to talk. Sometimes he talked about his life before Abyss, sometimes he told stories, sometimes he even sang. Sometimes the journeyed in companionable silence. Abyss never shushed the fox-wolf, but neither did he comment, though Shade knew he was listening. Then, at the end of the day after hunting, the pair would curl up and do it all again the next day.

Shade never asked where they were headed.

They had traveled far from where they'd met. Leaving the large trees of the forest and moving into the mountains. Summer had slowly drifted towards fall and not only were the days starting to get shorter, but also colder. Both Shade and Abyss' fur had started to lengthen, their winter coats coming in as the vibrant leaves of fall colored the timberline.

Today, Shade was feeling adventurous. Perhaps the crispness in the air emboldened the small wolf, or perhaps he could sense his companion's good mood.

"Abyss....where are we headed?"

Abyss glanced quickly over at the fox-wolf. Where were they headed? It was a fair question, but the male was reluctant to answer. Cause he'd kinda been playing it by ear for a while now. He wasn't sure how Shade would feel, knowing that they'd been travelling to no specific location. So far, he'd found the little wolf surprisingly easy-going. His everyday ramblings had no real direction and the randomness helped break up the tedium of travel. Abyss had learned bits of pieces of the other wolf's life and now knew the whole picture. He'd also learned that when the little fox-wolf wasn't exhausted he actually had a really quirky personality. Who would've thought a wolf like to be in high places? That revelation had almost stopped Abyss in his tracks.

"Ummmm- " Abyss was cut short from answering when a scent caught his attention. Was that a pack marker? Yes, yes it was. So far he'd navigated around any they'd come across. Packs, Abyss had learned, were terrifying situations. Best to be avoided.

"Shade do you smell that? Pack Territory. Let's head this way, we can go round it..."

Crystal Flurry loved checking the pack boundaries. Stretching her legs to their fullest extent and just loping over the mountainous terrain. It was a joy and she adored it. She adored it more when her cousin Fell Field was with her...but lately it seemed he was going out more and more often with Evie. Which made Flurry a little lonely, to be honest. But she wouldn't tell him that though, cause even if he couldn't see it (he was always complaining about her), Flurry could tell that there was something there. Something she had no place disrupting.

But.

Frost Shatter had "decreed" that she wasn't allowed to run alone after her "incident" in the summer. So she needed a chaperone. Sometimes this was a welcome accompaniment, other times not so much. Luckily today Flurry had been paired with Permafrost, who happened to be pregnant. Which meant that the other female was too slow to stop Flurry from doing as she pleased today. Of course the beige wolf would circle back to check on her companion, but the large, round she-wolf was content to slow pace her way through the woods and leave Flurry to do as she pleased. The arrangement suited both of them just fine.

So Flurry was far ahead of her "chaperone" when she reached the border of the Hornfel's territory. Bursting through the trees at full sprint, she only had time for a quick gasp before running full sprint into a small black shape.
